This Torghast, Tower of the Damned guide will provide an overview of all the new features and changes introduced in Patch 9.1, Chains of Domination. The changes include fewer floors but more layers, increases to Soul Ash rewards, the removal of the Death Counter system, and new daily Torments to make your experience that much more challenging. New features include big changes to the scoring system, a new Legendary crafting currency, a new talent progression system called the Box of Many Things, new challenge layers, new rewards, achievements, and more.
Please note that as of now, the changes listed below are ONLY in effect for the regular wings of Torghast.
Twisting Corridors has not received any changes at this time in 9.1.
About the Author
The guide you’re reading was put together by

I have various achievements under my belt including several Cutting Edges, Keystone Masters, Gold Dungeon Challenge Modes and as a personal goal, completed Twisting Corridors solo on the first week it was available as well as the
achievement on the 9.1 PTR,
on the 9.2 PTR, and for the fun of it-
Layer 12 flawless runs using a Racing Wheel.

Torghast Changes in Shadowlands Patch 9.1
This section will highlight the various systems in Torghast that have seen a rework or change in some way. Some of these topics are also related to
New Features
that have been added to Torghast, so I will do my best to refer you to the appropriate section of this guide as necessary.
More Layers in Torghast 9.1
Torghast 9.1 features an additional four layers that will need to be unlocked, giving a total of 12 possible layers. Layers 9 through 12 will give both
and the new
currencies, which are both used to craft Legendary-quality gear.
The following chart shows the recommended item levels for each layer of Torghast in 9.1/9.1.5:

Fewer Floors in Torghast 9.1
A Torghast run in 9.1 only includes five floors instead of six. The third floor is still a broker vendor floor, and the fifth floor is now the boss encounter for your run. This cuts down run time quite a bit.
Despite the loss of one floor, anima powers appear to be more plentiful, not less.
Bosses Don't Regenerate in Torghast 9.1
Bosses in Torghast will no longer regenerate health if you wipe on them. This means that it should be far more likely to complete a run for your and , even if it requires a few extra attempts to do it!
Death Counter Removed in Torghast 9.1
The Death Counter, the previous 'lose condition' of Torghast, has been removed. This in turn means
will no longer be paying you any visits. Be sure to stop by the Sanctum of Domination raid and say hi to it sometime!
Since deaths are no longer tracked, a new scoring system has been added that will determine if you may unlock a higher layer in Torghast. Please check out the Scoring System section in
New Features
to learn more.
Improvements to Soul Ash and Soul Cinders in 9.1.5
As a small revision to this guide Post-9.1, I have included an updated chart of the amounts of
and
you receive when completing layers in Torghast. This system previously was overly complicated and stalled progression by weekly lockouts of certain materials, but with 9.1.5 you can freely farm as much
and
as you need.
The following table will show you the amount of each currency you receive per layer:

Torment System Changes in Torghast 9.1
Torments in 9.0 and 9.0.5 were negative effects themed around each individual wing, such as
in
or
in
. These static Torments be removed in Patch 9.1, and replaced with a revised Torment System. which will instead apply different Torments to wings that change daily.
Torments in 9.1 are a variety of buffs for enemy forces and debuffs for player characters. They will become enabled on Torghast Layer 6 and higher, and are not present in Twisting Corridors. For each layer of Torghast, the number of Torments will vary:

The Torments applied to the wings of Torghast will change daily. The available wings for the week can potentially have some variations in available Torments each day. However, they often have most of them in common.
There are various types of Torments you will encounter in Torghast. Below is a list of all known Torments:
: Enemies grant nearby allies increased haste on death.
: Torghast Bosses are granted a powerful ally to assist them in battle.
: When 5 or more enemies are with 10 yards of you, they deal 10% increased damage.
: Non-elite enemies have 25% increased health.
: While in combat your location is periodically bombarded, dealing Physical damage and slowing you.
: When non-boss enemies are brought below 30% health, they gain 50% increased damage.
: Elite enemies grant nearby non-elite enemies increased health and reduced damage taken.
: Elite enemies periodically summon Doom Conduits while in combat.
: Elite enemies can cast Lesser Subjugations.
: Elite enemies periodically gain a Reflective Shield while in combat: inflicting Physical damage to all attackers 3 sec.
: Elite enemies begin with a shield that cancels 1 incoming stun or interrupt effect.
: Unnatural Power is significantly stronger.
: When brought below 40% health, become horrified for 3 seconds. This effect can only occur once every 2 minutes.
: Traps deal massively increased damage and are more commonly found.
: Magic damage done increased by 15% for ALL players and enemies.
: Physical damage done increased by 15% for ALL players and enemies.
: Phantasma will periodically coalesce and attempt to escape with your Phantasma.
: Enemies have a chance to leave a Doomed Soul Remnant on death. After a brief delay, it explodes, dealing Shadow damage immediately and over 10 seconds to nearby players.
For a mechanical breakdown of every Torment and potential ways to counter them, I recommend looking over my specific guide:

Torghast New Features in Shadowlands Patch 9.1
This section will highlight all of the new additions and features Torghast has received in Patch 9.1. Some of these topics are extensive enough that they have been pulled out into separate guides. These features will be summarized with a guide link for more indepth information.
New Scoring System in Torghast 9.1
One of the biggest changes to how Torghast functions is the Scoring System introduced in Patch 9.1.
The Scoring System is what will determine your progression in Torghast, as you will need to reach a minimum score to unlock the next higher layer. Upon defeating the Floor 5 boss in your Torghast run, the Score UI will appear to show how well you performed:
Many factors play into your success under the new scoring system. For a full explanation of the scoring system with the new categories, please see the separate guide:
New Scoring System for Torghast in Shadowlands 9.1
Tower Knowledge
is a new currency earned from running Torghast. This currency is used to unlocked perks in The Box of Many Things, the new talent system for Torghast. Higher layers of Torghast will reward more
than lower ones; however, the amount you receive is also based on how well you perform in your run. Your performance is determined by the new Scoring System, which has various criteria such as Completion %, Speed, Empowerment Bonuses, and Extra Bonuses.
will have a Season Cap that increases weekly.
For more information on how the Scoring System works, please see the guide linked above.
Farmable Renown
A new change from a hotfix part-way through Patch 9.1 now allows
to be earned from completing layers in Torghast, with higher layers offering a greater chance to earn
! This change should allow for new players to Shadowlands, alt characters, or freshly covenant swapped characters another method of getting caught up.
Soul Cinders: New Legendary Crafting Currency
is a new currency you will earn from running layers 8 through 12 of Torghast, as well as various other sources in
and
.
Below is a chart showing how many
you can earn from Torghast runs based on the layer you complete.

Farmable Soul Ash and Soul Cinders
There have been several big quality of life improvements to Torghast in regards to earning enough
and
for crafting Legendaries.
As mentioned previously, all layers of Torghast give substantially more
in 9.1 than in patches 9.0/9.0.5. See
this chart
if you want to know exactly how much more
you will earn.
With Patch 9.1.5,
were made farmable as well, and repeatedly clearing a layer of Torghast will always give you the full amount of
and
upon defeating the floor 5 boss.
Tips for Farming Soul Ash and Soul Cinders
From my testing of
and farming, I found that it was much more efficient to just find the layer of Torghast that I was most comfortable with speedrunning. Layer 8 is substantially easier than layer 12, and although it only awards roughly half the
compared to Layer 12, it should be easily farmable by most characters in short amounts of time. Depending on how well geared your character is, it is feasible to just run/sneak through a lot of enemies and still be more than powerful enough to defeat the boss on floor 5 with minimal anima powers even on Layer 12, so you'll have to experiment a little to see which works best for you. Having your
The Box of Many Things
fully completed also will greatly improve the level and speed at which you can farm Torghast.
New Torghast Talent System: The Box of Many Things
The Box of Many Things is a new talent progression tree, similar to the Titanic Research Archive from Patch 8.3, Visions of N'zoth.
This talent tree will give you access to a variety of beneficial effects that will aid you in Torghast. Currently, The Box of Many Things will only affect the regular wings of Torghast. It does not apply to Twisting Corridors.
For a full description of this new talent progression system for Torghast, including how to unlock it and the various talents you can choose from it, please see my separate guide:
Torghast Talent Progression: The Box of Many Things
New Shoulder and Cloak Transmog Rewards
Torghast will now offer a large selection of transmog items as potential rewards. Currently, this includes a massive variety of different styled/colored shoulder armor pieces and some cloak replacements. These can be used by any armor class in the game for transmog purposes only, as they have no stat values.
As an added bonus, these appearances are accountwide, all usable by any level 50 or higher characters on your account!
There are various ways you can earn these transmog appearance items:
Broker Vendors on Floors 3, 5 and 7 (Adamant Vaults, described below) will often sell Shoulders/Cloak replacement transmogs. Shoulders cost 300
, and cloak replacements cost 1000
.
Floor 5 bosses can drop shoulder transmogs.
Floor 7 bosses (Adamant Vaults) can drop shoulder and cloak replacement transmogs.
Random enemies in the Adamant Vaults can drop shoulder and cloak replacement transmogs.
Note: The Broker vendors will only have these items on Layers 9 and Higher.
Adamant Vaults
The Adamant Vaults are a special series of extra floors in the most challenging Layers of Torghast. Accessing the most hidden chambers of Torghast is a task for the greatest of Maw Walkers, with many unique rewards waiting for you!
Below we will outline the basics of the Adamant Vaults, but if you would like specific details on the types of traps, enemies, and bosses found within, please refer to our dedicated guide:
Adamant Vaults Guide
To unlock the Adamant Vaults:
You or someone in your party must have
The Adamant Vaults
perk unlocked in their Box of Many Things.
You must complete a Layer 9 or higher Torghast run with a Flawless score. This means earning a total of 200 or more points by the time you defeat the boss on Floor 5.
Once you have achieved a Flawless clear of a Layer 9 or higher Torghast Run, you'll be able to ascend to Floors 6 and 7, the Adamant Vaults. There are a variety of new enemies, tricks, and traps waiting for you, as well as a couple unique Floor 7 bosses.
Defeating the Floor 7 boss will award you with some bonus
.
The Adamant Vaults offers many more perks, as you'll often find that the Broker on floor 7 will sell one of the unique cloak replacement transmog pieces for 1000
. A couple examples of these items include
and
.
Another unique reward from the Adamant Vaults is the battlepet,
. From my testing, this appears to be a reward from the Floor 7 boss if you completed a Flawless clear of any wing of Torghast, regardless of Layer cleared.
There is also a new toy, the
. This drops from the Floor 7 boss and is a toy based on the iron maidens you find in the Adamant Vaults, but instead it will trap you within. Other players may click on your cell and free you from its confines.
Meta-Achievement Mount
A new series of achievements has been added to Torghast as well, all of which are associated with completing Flawless runs. One of these achievements,
, will award a unique mount, the
!
will require you to complete a Flawless clear of all 6 wings of Torghast on Layer 12, the highest difficulty available in 9.1. This achievement will award you the
, one of the new mount models introduced in 9.1.
This mount is slightly timegated, since you need to complete all 6 layers and only two are available per week, so you will want to keep track of your progress on the
so you don't forget or miss a particular wing!
Sadly, the Mawsworn Charger does NOT fly, but is definitely impressive looking.
Author's Note
This guide will be updated as needed and to the best of my ability, but I hope this look into the many new features and changes coming to Torghast proves helpful to you in 9.1 and beyond! More information and sections will be added as I perform additional research and testing, but if you have any suggestions or input then feel free to leave a comment below. I hope you're all doing well, and have a great day!

EDIT:
TheRedRogue commented with important considerations that I failed to see below, please read!
The new soul ash rates had me thinking, "How easy will it be to get 5150 soul ash in a week in 9.1?" I did some quick math to answer that below:
tl;dr In week 4 and beyond it will be possible earn all of the soul ash for a legendary by clearing torghast on 3 characters and completing reclears for 90 further soul ash. In weeks 1, 2, and 3, you will have to instead scrounge up 150, 230, and 320 spare soul ash, respectively.
To elaborate on this, soul ash can only be sent in packages of 250, which cost 300 soul ash. So, if you do two clears of layer 9 for 1830 soul ash, you will only be able to spend 1800 of it immediately to send to an alt. Note that clearing two layer 12's will yield 2060 soul ash, so the amount you can send from a week of torghast clears will stay at 1500 throughout the patch.
On that note, it's important to address the "Infinite soul ash from reclearing" business. You can reclear torghast for more soul ash, but at an 80% loss. By contrast, sending soul ash from an alt comes at a 17% loss.
However, clear speed of a high layer on an alt versus a reclear on a character you're comfortable with needs to be considered. Please read TheRedRogue's great comment on that below!

Hey Red Rogue, do you know if twisting corridors is any different? Has the difficulty been amped up for season 2? Can you get the box of many things buff inside it?
Thanks! ^^

Is there a pre-requisite or minimum layer level to get the score screen at the end of a run?
I ask because I just did Twisting Corridors for the first time, and did not get a "score." (First time running Torghast since 9.1 dropped, so I also picked up the quest for the Box of Many Things.)

Currently doing layer 5 twisting corridors, so far have not seen a single shoulder mog. Have only seen them on layers 9 and above (NOT FLOORS) and only in normal torghast not twisting corridors.

Anyone else feel like the "par" time is too harsh? I can easily complete layer 8, but in more than double that timespan (ca. 40 mins vs 18 mins). I really enjoy going through one little bit at a time and making sure I've done everything, and this new timer really hurts the experience for me; I get really anxious and mildly panicked at having to do something so quickly.

I can't see this anywhere in the guide or the comments but I just ran a Layer 9 and died on the boss (floor 5).
When I ran back the bosses health had not reset and I was able to continue the fight from where I left off!
If this is intentional this is a fantastic change as it now means you don't have to worry about not being able to finish your run and wasting your time :)

Hey Red,
I was just on PTR and did the Sigil quest line to unlock Bonesmith on my main to buy the soul ash bag.
When I logged onto my alts and did the Korthia "skip" to get to Korthia, Bonesmith is not there even though the characters are on the same ptr account. I even attempted to look for the "Vision" of Bonesmith in Korthia.
Have you checked recently by any chance as I do know you had a line advising players that it is BOA once completed on ONE character.
This was checked on July 6, 2021 on the latest PTR RC build.
Thanks for the guide!
Cheers.
