In the Shadowlands, each zone is dominated by one of four Covenants: the Kyrian, Venthyr, Necrolord or Night Fae. You'll be introduced to them through the Shadowlands storyline and at max level, you'll get to join one of them and get access to their rewards, including a class-specific Covenant ability, a Covenant Signature ability, unique transmogs and more!
In the Dragonflight Pre-Patch, many Covenant effects have been converted into talents. If a Legendary and Covenant ability are both picked and have a similar effect, the Talent Tree effect will normally overwrite the Covenant ability. Head to your class guide for more details.
In this Shadowlands guide, we provide an overview of all four Covenants, including rewards, as well as a run-down of Covenant specific features like Soulbinds, Transportation Networks, Campaigns, and Renown.
What Are Covenants?
In the expanded worlds of Azeroth, the Afterlife exists as a series of countless interconnected realms, controlled by one of four powerful groups:
Kyrian, Necrolords, Night Fae,
and
Venthyr
. These groups, called Covenants, each hold their own purpose, responsibilities, and focus, fulfilling crucial roles in the smooth operation of the Afterlife.
Souls cross into the Shadowlands to be judged by the Arbiter, who assigns most souls to the care of a Covenant. In that Covenant's realms, these souls work out their burdens, hone their Anima, and take their places among their ranks in eternity. A few souls are deemed so vile, so incapable of atonement for their past deeds, that they are imprisoned in The Maw, a prison for those who have fallen so low that they are incapable of redemption.
As a powerful hero, you will step into this Afterlife as one who has a foot in the worlds of both the living and the dead. Unlike the dead of the Shadowlands, you will have the choice of aligning with a Covenant that appeals to you and your nature.
Here we present an overview of all four Covenants, including the personality and characteristics of each Covenant, and examples of powerful heroes from Azeroth's past who have taken up residence there.
Kyrian Covenant
Primary Realm:
Bastion
Eternal Role:
Angelic Soul Guides, tasked with shuttling souls between the lands of the living and the dead
Character:
Ordered and purposeful, the Kyrian are called to lives of eternal service. The Kyrian value humility, righteousness, service, and virtue. Those who seek out the Kyrian who aren't yet ready to assume roles to eternal service unburden their souls through meditation and reflection to gain renewed understanding.
Heroic Souls known to exist in Bastion:
Uther Lightbringer, murdered by crown prince Arthas Menethil while defending the ashes of his father, King Terenas Menethil II.
Kyrian Covenant Overview
Necrolord Covenant
Primary Realm:
Maldraxxus
Eternal Role:
Military guardians of the Shadowlands, protecting it from external forces that wage war on the enemies of Death
Character:
Unrelenting and unyielding, the Necrolords are the military arm of the Shadowlands. They can be ruthless, and value all flavors of strength and power -- mental, emotional, and physical. Expect to be sorely tested to join their ranks, as the Necrolords believe in the survival of the fittest, meaning those who can't excel deserve failure and rejection. This can lead to some interpreting Maldraxxus as a realm of evil, but this is not necessarily true. Power, not philosophy, rules here.
Heroic Souls known to exist in Maldraxxus:
Draka, mother of Thrall, murdered by Gul'dan's Shadow Council forces shortly after giving birth.
Necrolords Covenant Overview
Night Fae Covenant
Primary Realm:
Ardenweald
Eternal Role:
Guardians of Nature, Shepherds of the Cycle of Life and Death
Character:
The Night Fae represents the autumn and winter cycles of the Wheel of Life -- the cycle of death and rebirth that comes to all parts of nature. They serve in a similar capacity to the Kyrian to powerful nature souls, guiding them from life to their realms for eventual rest and rebirth. The realms of the Night Fae are the mirror to the Emerald Dream, and parts of their realms are linked strongly to the Drust. Souls with strong ties to the natural world can earn rebirth through this re-connection to all aspects of nature.
Heroic Souls known to exist in Ardenweald:
Cenarius, who was corrupted by the Nightmare and purified in the Emerald Nightmare.
Night Fae Covenant Overview
Venthyr Covenant
Primary Realm:
Revendreth
Eternal Role:
Punishers of the Unworthy
Character:
The vampiric Venthyr serve Shadowlands as those who seek out those souls weighed down by the burdens of their flaws -- pride, rapaciousness, greed, apathy. Without the Venthyr to purge them of these burdens and allow them to atone, these souls might have been sentenced to an eternity in The Maw as irredeemable, but for the spark of possible redemption found within them. The Venthyr prepare these souls for one of two fates -- learning to harness their strengths to become a Punisher for the Covenant or lighten their souls to move on to another Covenant to further their eternal journey.
Souls known to exist in Venthyr:
Kael'thas Sunstrider, former Lord of the Blood Elves, who died in Magister's Terrace after falling from grace following the Legion.
Venthyr Covenant Overview
Discovering Covenants
When you enter the Shadowlands for the first time with your first character at level 50, your character will begin by escaping The Maw. You will then quest through the four major zones, each controlled by a different Covenant. These zones and their respective Covenant are:
Bastion
(Kyrian)
Maldraxxus
(Necrolords)
Ardenweald
(Night Fae)
Revendreth
(Venthyr)
When you enter the Shadowlands on your first character for the first time, you will be required to follow the entire storyline. You'll start in Bastion and progress through Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and finally Revendreth. When you have completed this story arc and have reached level 60 (the new max level in Shadowlands), you will be given the choice to align yourself with one of the four Covenants. You must align with one of them for the expansion's storylines to progress further.
Covenants and Alts - Threads of Fate
Once you have completed this journey of taking one character from 50-60, progressing through the story and choosing a Covenant, all subsequent characters you take into the Shadowlands will have the option of choosing a Covenant right from level 50 and will be offered the Threads of Fate, a choice whether to level on the main storyline again, or whether to level through alternative means. You aren't required to go through the entire storyline for every character. You may choose to do so, but you can just jump right into a Covenant from the beginning, start working on world quests, events, and Covenant end-game content. If you do decide to go back and do quests, you will not be required to follow the zone order you had to follow the first time though.
You'll have opportunities to serve your Covenant by returning Anima to them, as well as bringing back souls from the Maw and Torghast. You will also have a Covenant Sanctum to upgrade and level.
Threads of Fate Alt Leveling Guide
Selecting Your Covenant
Choosing your Covenant is based on many factors, including your class, desired class Covenant ability, playstyle, aesthetics, and roleplay sensibilities. There may be many people telling you what is "best" for your class, but what is best for one purpose (mythic+, raiding) may not be best for another (solo questing, PvP, or roleplay). It needs to be an individual decision based on many factors, and one you need to make carefully. Switching Covenants is easy; switching
back
to one you'd previously joined and left is another matter.
You may have a good idea of what Covenant you want based on the personality and backstory you've built for your character. Avoid falling into the trap that a clearly "good" Covenant is only for Alliance and a clearly "evil" Covenant is only for the Horde.
First, neither Alliance nor Horde nor the four Covenants, are either "good" or "evil". The righteousness of the Kyrian can also be inflexible, and the punishment of the Venthyr can be seen as the necessary redemption of a sullied soul that might otherwise have been condemned to The Maw. An undead warrior who protected her charges with honor might be a perfect candidate for the Kyrian, while a dwarf paladin who committed atrocities in his zeal for his personal idea of righteousness might find himself in Revendreth to atone for his pride. Avid roleplayers will have a great deal of fun deciding on the ultimate fates for their characters!
What is the Best Covenant for Shadowlands PvE?
Choosing a Covenant is the most important decision your character will make in Shadowlands, as the Covenant abilities and soulbinds will significantly impact your spec's gameplay and performance. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story along different paths.
Our Shadowlands Covenant guides help you choose the right Covenant for your playstyle, based on how much they impact your performance. We have guide pages for recommending the best Covenants, best Soulbind paths, as well as best Conduits. We also highlight how to best use your Signature and Class Covenant abilities.
Keep in mind that Shadowlands tuning is ongoing and that these may change without notice. Also keep in mind that "Best" can be both pretty subjective and, in many cases, a very close call. This list should be viewed in that light.

How to Select A Covenant
When you complete the zone campaigns on your first character and get to level 60, you will receive a quest in Oribos
天命之选
from
塔尔-伊纳拉
<Honored Voice> at 39.9, 70.0 in Oribos. This will direct you to speak with the four leaders of the Covenants nearby:
Kyrian - Polemarch Adestres: 36.2, 64.2
Necrolords - Baroness Draka: 43, 74
Night Fae - Lady Moonberry: 39.6, 60.9
Venthyr - General Draven: 44.7, 68.8
Go to the Shadowlands Covenant Map near Tal-Inara and click. This will give you the chance to pick one of the four Covenants. Turn in
天命之选
.
After this, the leader of the Covenant you chose will have a quest for you.
Be sure to pick this up before you go to your new home zone.
Without it, you won't get any of the entry quests to begin opening your Sanctum. If you just go straight to the zone, you'll just have to return to Oribos and pick the quest up.
Kyrian:

Necrolords:

Night Fae:

Venthyr:

Further information about these quests and where they lead is continued in the individual Covenant Sanctum guides.

How to Change your Covenant
It will be possible to change Covenants if you find you dislike the one that you've chosen. Leaving one Covenant to join another will not be a difficult process, as long as the new Covenant is one that you have never joined before. The process becomes more difficult if you wish to rejoin a Covenant you had previously belonged to.
WARNING: Covenant Choice is not a forgiving system.
You are immediately penalized for trying to rejoin a Covenant you joined before, even if you just do a simple back-and forth. For example, if you initially choose Necrolord and don't even speak to Draka, then go to the Kyrian and join them, and then change your mind and talk to Draka to rejoin the Necrolords, you'll be faced with having to do

immediately. Think and make your decisions carefully!
How to Join and Change Covenants
Renown
Renown is a Covenant specific progression system that will measure and build your standing with your chosen Covenent. Renown builds your Trust within your Covenant, influences your connection to your Soulbinds, and allows your progression in repairing (upgrading) your Sanctum. Unlike the two APs (Artifact Power and Azerite Power) in the previous expansions, Renown is not an open-ended grind, it is a metered progression system that you will work through as you play the game. There is a weekly cap on how much Renown you can earn.
How to Earn Renown in Shadowlands
In addition, Renown is needed to unlock rewards at different levels, to progress on the Covenant Campaigns, and will play an important role in unlocking Shadowlands flying.

Dungeon Bonuses
In Shadowlands, each of the 8 dungeons has a bonus that can be activated by a specific Covenant. Only one person in the group needs to be of that Covenant in order to activate the bonus for the entire party. These buffs range from damage and stat increases, to Crowd Controlling effects and even enlisting Trash mobs to fight for you!

Covenant Soulbinds and Conduits
Soulbinding is a new system of progression in the Shadowlands expansion in which players will be able to bind themselves to a member of their chosen Covenant, sharing some of their power through an artifact-like talent tree. Each of the different Covenants has three options to choose from, with each Soulbind offering different bonuses, for a total of twelve different trees of progression across the four Covenants. Conduits add further customization to those Soulbind trees, allowing players to fill empty sockets in the trees with bonuses of their choosing.
Wowhead's Soulbind Calculator
Wowhead has created a Soulbind Calculator allowing players to create a fully-customizable Soulbind path, including ability nodes and Conduits for all ranks, in addition to guides highlighting the best Soulbinds for every specialization.

Covenant Item Rewards
Covenant Transmog
Under the Covenant system in the WoW Shadowlands expansion, players can earn special armor, cloaks, and weapons with transmog appearances appropriate to their Covenant of choice. There are armor sets for all four armor types (cloth, leather, mail, and plate), as well as cloak transmogs. There are also weapon sets, available in four tints, which compliment the Covenant armor sets. In our guides below, we detail how to acquire every armor and weapon tint, as well as provide Dressing Room links and model viewer images.

Covenant Mounts and Pets
Additional Covenant rewards like mounts, pets, and Hearthstone animations are found throughout many Covenant-specific systems, such as Renown, Campaigns, minigames, and Anima Vendors. Our reward guides list every single Covenant reward and how to obtain them.

Covenant Sanctums
Similar to Garrisons of Draenor and Class Halls of Legion, the Covenant Sanctums are meant to be a base of operations for your max-level characters. You will need to develop and reactivate areas of your Sanctum whose powers and abilities have been lost due to the upheavals of Shadowlands and loss of Anima to your Covenant. By restoring these areas to full functionality, you will earn rewards and increase access to your opportunities within your zone.
These will also be the base of operations for your Covenant Campaign, as well as being the place you pick up your two weekly quests to raise Renown and build your power within the Covenant.
You cannot enter the Sanctum of a Covenant where you do not belong. Interlopers will be ejected.
Each Sanctum has three structures in common, and one unique to the Covenant:
Anima Conductor
Transportation Network
Adventures - Scouting Map/Mission Table ()
Covenant-Specific Feature - Minigame
For more information about Covenant Sanctums, please see the separate guides for each covenant.
Kyrian: Elysian Hold Necrolords: Seat of the Primus Night Fae: Heart of the Forest Venthyr: Sinfall
Transportation Network
Every Covenant Sanctum has a Transport Network, which facilitates travel around your Covenant's home zone. There is an entrance to the network inside each Sanctum, and only members of the Covenant who have built up the Transport Network can use it. Like all Sanctum features, it is not operating when you first open you Sanctum, and you will need to invest resources to get it up and working.

Covenant Features
Each of the four Covenants in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands has a unique feature, an aspect of the Covenant featuring unique gameplay that is only accessible to members of that Covenant. Progressing through this minigame unlocks special rewards including mounts and transmog weapons.
Note
: Rewards from the Covenant Features are cosmetic or crafting materials; none impacts character or class performance.
Path of Ascension (Kyrian)Abominable Stitching (Necrolord)Queen's Conservatory (Night Fae)Ember Court (Venthyr)
Anima Conductor
Anima Conductors control and direct the Anima streams to key areas in your Covenant's zone. Anima streams are like leylines, ancient pathways of the mysterious Anima power that flows through Shadowlands. During the Anima drought, these Anima flows were sealed off and no longer work correctly. By improving these Anima Conductors located in your Covenant Sanctum, you can open the flow of Anima, revealing new daily and world quests, treasures, enemy champions, and enhancements just for members of your Covenant.
The
失落记忆编年史
is an item that can be purchased via your Covenant's Renown vendor. This legendary book will grant you a memory for a Legendary Effect you have not yet learned. To obtain this item, you need to collect 35
感激之礼
s, a special currency earned by doing activities associated with your Covenant.
Guide to the Anima Conductor
Adventures
For Shadowlands, Covenant Adventures are the next iteration of Missions. They are an abstracted, turn based combat system that relies more on tactical ability management and less on pure RNG. As with previous Missions, Adventures is a system for offline progression, meaning that you set up what you want to do and the majority of advancement is done in real time without your direct interaction. You can be working towards your goal while you are playing other content, and even while you are off-line. The system is also available on the
Mobile Companion App
so you can collect and launch Adventures on the go.

Covenant Callings
Once you have joined your Covenant and started your Sanctum, you will begin to receive Covenant Callings. These are specific world-level quests that call upon you to perform great deeds for your Covenant, with high rewards for success. You will receive three Covenant Callings at a time, and like World Quests, these have specific durations and rewards. These can only be picked up inside your Sanctum, not out in the world.
Covenant callings replace the Emissary system in Shadowlands, and are scaled to begin at level 50, so alts who join Covenants from the start can also begin Covenant Callings.
Guide to Covenant Callings
Covenant Campaigns
Each of the four Covenants has a separate Covenant Campaign that dives deeper into the story of the Covenant and reveals more of their motivations, issues, and objectives. Later chapters of the campaign will require higher Renown levels to unlock and reward transmog and mounts.

My only concern is that I will be forced into a specific covenant for raiding. I know that isn't Blizz' intention, but that could happen anyway. I heard that's why we went from talent trees to talent bars; to do away with cookie cutter specs, but this, ironically, made them only more cookie cutter.

It seems as though we'll need to play through the expac with four different characters in order to see all of the story content, does that seem accurate? (Putting aside the ability to change covenants for now as it seems that'll be rather costly.)

@Renata, thank you for this guide of insight. I couldn't attend BlizzCon this year and was wanting to know more about these "Covenants" mentioned on a social media channel.
Your guide is very comprehensive, considering the information is currently only what was presented at BlizzCon two weeks ago (barely).

In my opinion, one of the biggest problems with current WoW mechanics is the huge gap between
meta builds
and other random builds, which always forces one to play the meta if they want to achieve something worthy. I think if
builds
were actually
play-styles
, rather than being useless options just for the sake of being there, it would take the game's flexibility to a whole new level.

Thanks for the great guide! These covenants add more diversity to the game and I love it! This seems Blizz's new direction to follow the general need for diversity they need to keep up with in the game as well (same with the player modifications/new skin colors etc). Can't wait to see the new player landscape!

I'm concerned with the current system they have in place for covenants, given that the abilites they give aren't going to be tiny racials, but big CD's. That are going to be the determining factor in terms of overall healing and DPS output that can further the cookie cutter system we have. With forcing players into not being able to use the other abilites at will without serious grinds to both swap to them and back depending on the situation they may want the ability for. I'm hoping that what we get is a system similar to talents, or azertie somewhat where you pay some fee to swap at will, or just use a tome and swap that way. As it would seriously suck if you pretty much were locked into only being able to do good single target for raiding, or AoE for keys, or extra abilities in PvP that can be lifesaving or pump harder into players. We're thankfully seeing blizzard taking steps in the right directions, as the essence system got a massive kick in the right direction. With the new currency being added which allowed alts to be able to gear properly and have acess to proper traits without previous inital 8.2 grinds that made sense at the time. However now in 8.3 didn't make sense to continue to have and gimped a lot of players from endgame content due to essences. I just hope they continue to take steps in the right direction, and see how silly it is from a gameplay perspective it is to lock players in a single covenant. I get it from a roleplay perspective, but roleplay doesn't always mean that its a good idea for gameplay in terms of pushing endgame or other aspects of the game outside of roleplay.

These look so interesting! Normally I dread replaying expansion content on anything more than my Alliance main and my Horde alt (and let's be honest, some skimming is done the second time around on my Hordie), but I'm genuinely looking forward to taking my alts through here. Now I just have to decide which alts are the chosen ones. Very excited to see lore characters again, especially Kael'thas, but I am surprised at Thrall's mum being in Maldraxxus--never heard enough about her character from in-game quests to peg her for that personality.
Thanks for the guide, Shadowlands is looking awesome so far. :)

LORD PLEASE PA-LEASE let the Kyrian be a playable race. I am in love, I want a thicc girl race, and no, not a character with a beer gut , I mean a thicc girl with wings. I am in love with how they look not to mention what she is wearing is the kinda clothes I'm looking for in wow. OMG she is amazing.

Also question, does this mean that if I do all this work to get a mount and do all the special customization like artifact type appearances, its not gonna count for any of my characters and same with the armor? How are you gonna do a mount off when you cant even collect them all lol or am I reading into this incorrectly.

I hate that Blizzard is forcing me to play one spec. The covenant best for DPS and for tanking are both different, that's unfair. I cannot just switch to tank spec when my raid team needs because I am setup for DPS. The limitations that are being forced upon me is a joke, let me play my class the way I want to!

I put this together for my own guidance in terms of resources and soulbinds. These information are just my opinion and you guys can verify it.
Soulbinds
Nadjia - Venthyr - Extra Rubies and dredge currencies, 15% well fed, flasks, and weapon enchant (benefits the Dual handed Alchemist Pandas)
Theotar- venthyr - potion increase, cooking ingredients and drops herbs
General Draven - Venthyr - great for tanking DKs, soulbinds gives either mount speed 10% or durability less 50%
Pelagos - Kyrian - great for healers, tailors and enchanters
Kleia - Kyrian - great for runners and quick death increasing run speed for 20 sec. Mount speed 10%
Mikanikos - Kyrian - great for casters that reduces stun durations and increase haste.
Marileth - Necrolord - great for tanks that heals durability and bonus on opening locked keys.
Emeni - Necrolord - Great for Rogues and escape artists.
Bonesmith - Necrolord - great for aoe arsenals (heals 1-5% per kill or increase critical strikes), drops ores and jewels
Niya - Might Fae - 5% health regeneration per 3 sec non-stop, poisons based on Versatility, drops meats and leatherworking skins or 20% run speed for 2 min after kills. Demon Hunters may best served this.
DreamWeaver - Night Fae - Cute to join you, 5% haste for 15 Sec, great for stunners, rooters, speed killers, and 20% run speed in rest areas.
Korayn - Night Fae - weapons take no durability or mount speed 3% with allies.
Bonus
Kyrian - Has potion that 20% heals and removes negative effects, engineering pet
Night Fae - Fox 30% speed boost, great for non druids.

Druid Bonesmith (Necrolord)
DK Blacksmith Bonesmith (necrolord)
DH Leatherworker Niya (Night Fae)
Warlock Tailor/enchanter Pelagos (Kyrian)

I can’t say that I am overly excited by the background or aesthetics of any of them but choosing one to max dps is probably pointless as well because knowing blizz they are going to change optimal specs with every content patch to “keep it fun”.

Transmogs from Covenant sets will only be available to members of that Covenant. If you have more than one character that belongs to a particular Covenant, any Covenant-specific transmogs should be available accountwide.
I think the last sentence is a bit misleading. It should be "If you have more than one character that belongs to a particular Covenant, any Covenant-specific transmogs should be available accountwide to any character that are member of that covenant.", no?

Very big reason why people must have at least 4 characters no matter what. To be fair, that way I won't get penalized over and over again using the exact same character.

Adding my 2¢ on choosing a covenant after having taken multiple characters through each campaign. I mainly play solo, so people who play with groups may have a much easier time of getting through these; but if I were to have a fresh character choose a covenant again I would most definitely
not
choose the Kyrians. The
is the only one of the four covenants which
requires
completing a dungeon (
晋升高塔
) in order to progress and get your covenant gear (at only the 3rd of 9 chapters). Additionally, a quest in chapter 6 (
主宰者之眼
) requires defeating a powerful foe in Reverdreth which one of my characters has not yet managed to defeat; my other character who had gone through this was only able to do so because there were other players in the area helping out. Finally, one of the later quests in chapter 8 (
受损的意志
) involves a very dangerous trip into the Maw, which I could not have completed without other players in the zone to help keep enemy aggro off of my character.
I would
probably
not choose the Night Fae or Venthyr either. Chapter 8 of the
has a series of quests in another dangerous part of the Maw (
营救洛阿神灵
in The Beast Warrens, though this is not
nearly
as bad as Perdition Hold that Kyrians have to foray.) The
doesn’t have a bad Maw run like either the Kyrians or Night Fae, but it does have a quest in Revendreth (
暗祸叛徒
) which is rather difficult to do solo.
That just leaves the
, which as far as I remember is completely manageable playing solo.
All that said, it’s probably worth going through all of the covenants at least once just for the covenant-specific rewards — transmog sets, mounts, pets, etc. — which may be used account-wide. And I haven’t even touched on the special covenant abilities they grant your character, since those are also class-specific. Those you’ll just have to try out on a per-character basis with each covenant to see what you like. I just strongly recommend grouping up for all but the Necrolords.

What to do with anima objects you collect on character/alts BEFORE they reach Level 60
Note that you can store Anima you happen to gain (from quest rewards, etc.) in the Anima Reservoir in your Covenant Sanctum even before you reach level 60. Right-click on the NPC at the Anima Reservoir and then click on the "Deposit" button and the anima will be stored in the reservoir. I am looking forward to spending some of the anima without having to go out questing in order to do my first upgrade to the transport system.
OFC, the alt I did this on was using the Threads of Fate alternate levelling method where you choose your covenant in Oribos during the early stages of the process.

Pretty god dam annoying in my opinion on a alt i just quested from 50 to 60 but once hitting level 60 i was not given the choice to select a covenant , turns out u have to continue to quest in ravendreth to do the opening quest bullcr*p before choosing . Rolls eyes , as if im going to do this on multiple characters GRRR . Blizzard says once u do this on a main you wont have to do the same again but thats a total lie - rolls eyes and beat head on computer table . NO BODY LIKES TO QUEST BLIZZARD - FAR OUT !

The
changing covenants section
needs to be updated to reflect the changes in Patch 9.1.5 which allow players to change between covenants at will and without the need to do quests to rejoin a previous covenant.

I recently tried to open world quests in Shadowlands, on an alt I have created after the Dragonflight launch.
Since the skip is no longer available, I had to do all chapters in all zones, then join a convenant. They have been unlocked once I went in Elysium Hold and finished the small intro to the covenant.
Its annoying as all hell, but it went rather fast. About 3 hours of questing per zone. However this does not open Korthia. Opens Zereth Mortis, The Maw, but not Korthia.
