I'm Bicepspump, a semi-hardcore player currently playing on Kazzak. You can often find me on the
Death Knight discord
discussing rotations and builds, on my stream (

where I've started doing video guides. Big shoutout to everyone on the Acherus discord that have given me valuable insight through numerous discussions. I take part in writing and optimizing the action priority list for SimulationCraft and continuously test different hypotheses using the SimulationCraft program. Furthermore, I work with the WoWAnalyzer website where I develop modules for the Death Knight specs. Please feel free to contact me on

Necrolord Changes with 9.0.5 for Frost Death Knight
now provides 20% damage reduction whilst channeling.
cooldown is reduced by 1 second by walking over enemy corpses.
Effects that previously required channeling
on dead mobs now automatically trigger as you walk over them.
Necrolord Frost Death Knight Covenant Abilities
Necrolord Death Knight Class Ability:
The Necrolord Class Ability for Death Knights of all specializations is
: a 2 minute cooldown that, every second for 12 seconds (including on press), does AoE damage around you, and attempts to pull a target that currently resides 8 yards or further from you into melee range. The ability is target capped at 5 targets.
There are a lot of subtleties regarding the implementation of this spell, and caveats to note:
It attempts to grip when used.
It
can
grip the same target repeatedly, but no more than once every 4s.
It triggers a proc of
three times in its duration.
It cannot grip targets immune to movement, or targets less than 8 yards away from you.
It also cannot grip targets out of combat.
The ability is mainly a 2 minute AoE Cooldown. The grip portion is rarely useful in PvE, mainly because it's so unreliable. Gripping a random target to you is pretty much never useful. Furthermore, if you do want lots of grips, there are much better options, such as bringing a Blood DK. The
s are nice, especially in AoE.
Necrolord Death Knight Signature Ability:
is a channeled shield ability that provides 20% damage reduction when channeled. The shield itself is nice but the 20% damage reduction is the important part. An ability that has been quite useless up until patch 9.0.5 will now see much more play in raids. It's essentially another big defensive cooldown for us!
Legendary Interactions for Necrolord Frost Death Knights
There are currently no interactions with Legendaries and the Necrolord Covenant.
Necrolord Frost Death Knight Soulbinds
Plague deviser Marileth grants you one impactful trait:
empowers your
by granting an additional buff based on the type of corpse you used it near. 120 mastery for humanoids, 2% primary stats for beasts, 5% stamina for demons, and a 5% heal for undead.
specifically works well for channeling
after you've killed an add wave or a mythic + pack. The buffs are nice and can provide damage boosts if you've killed humanoids or beasts. The consistency of this DPS boost is a worry though since you won't be able to utilize it in most scenarios.
All other Soulbind spells are purely defensive, making Marileth generally unattractive to us.
An example tree to follow on this Soulbind is as follows:
Emeni provides a couple of interesting nodes:
, the initial trait in the tree, functions as group utility as well as a good DPS boost. Your party members are granted 2% primary stat, and you gain up to 13% primary stat yourself. You will be able to use this ability to its full effectiveness in pretty much all mythic + and raid scenarios. You only need 4 allies close to you to do this! This spell also lines up nicely with our cooldown. You can use it for every second
which will be great value. It also pairs especially well with
provides stacking haste when defeating mobs. Useful in mythic + but not so much in raids. Does block us from using 2 Potency Conduits, drastically decreasing the potential of actually picking this up.
gives a nice amount of movement speed when close to enemies. A nice utility option which is also quite attractive since it lies on the path of a Potency Conduit.
I would say that Emeni is the overall best Soulbind.
is simply much stronger than any other Soulbind Trait available for Necrolord.
You can find an example of a Soulbind tree below. We don't pick up
since it blocks us from picking a second Potency Conduit. The DPS gain isn't large enough to warrant this exchange, so we instead opt for the path that ends up with
. For Mythic+, I would pick up
!
Picking Bonesmith Heirmir grants access to the following notable traits:
is a very interesting ability that might remind you of the Shadow of Death talent from Wrath of the Lich King. In the best case, you won't make use of this ability since you'll keep yourself alive. However, if you do die, it's a nice damage boost. It also provides a significant boost to your stats as long as you have a sufficient amount of enchants.
grants you additional crit percentage every minute. It's a good offensive trait but it does prevent you from picking 2 Potency Conduits, making it slightly less powerful than it could be.
is really powerful and is worth aiming for. We therefore simply aim for this straight away!
Best Necrolord Frost Death Knight Early Soulbind
The choice for early Soulbind is an easy one. Emeni provides the absolute most amount of power through
and provides the most amount of DPS by far.
Best Necrolord Frost Death Knight Late Soulbind
At higher ranks of renown we switch to Heirmir. The secondary stats gained from him is generally better for our damage output!
Necrolord Frost Death Knight Covenant Rotation Changes
As usual, this page only highlights the specific use case of the Class and Signature Abilities. To see how they fit within the context of the entire spec, we encourage you to check the other pages in the guide related to the context you are looking for:
Frost Death Knight Rotation Guide
This ability should generally be used on Cooldown. It can be worth it to hold on to it for a couple of seconds if an add pack is incoming. Do be mindful of how it grips targets so that you don't use it in a situation where this would be detrimental! Make sure to always use
together with
if you are using the Emeni Soulbind!
Use this ability pre-pull for both raids and mythic +. Also time it with big raid hits to mitigate the damage you take.
Necrolord Frost Death Knight Talent Builds
Emeni with the
Soulbind spell specifically synergises with
. It works well with
as well but the synergy isn't as strong.

Necrolord Frost Death Knight Gearing Differences
Necrolord won't change our stat priority in any way.
