Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Marksmanship Hunter. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Marksmanship Hunter.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Marksmanship Hunter during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working
up to level 115
, creating some interesting situations, as some effects from legendaries
became baseline effects or talents in BFA

hold true for Battle for Azeroth. Due to the stat squish and the other changes, some things in 8.0 such as stats, are super wonky and are not indicative of how they are in Battle for Azeroth. Marksmanship Hunters in Legion
In Legion, Marksman
猎人
revolved around optimizing Vulnerable windows in single target. Multi-target centered around alternating between

and Marked Shot, relying on Marking Targets procs outside of
- our primary cooldown. Talents such as

improved the Vulnerable debuff, making this mechanic essential to the rotation. Vulnerable was applied to targets using Marked Shot, along with

- an ability provided by our Artifact weapon.

were the primary focus spenders while

made up the primary focus generators. By itself,
was a lackluster cooldown, however traits such as

survivability, on the other hand, was one of the worst in the game. Our base toolkit gave use

’s artifact weapon also gave us

and Healing Shell which aided a tiny bit. Unfortunately, while

was on cooldown,

s were one of, if not the, squishiest class in the game.
What’s changed in Battle for Azeroth?
While some of the abilities from Legion remain, their usage and interactions with one another have changed. Both Vulnerable and
耐心的射手
have been removed, which many players will appreciate. We return to a playstyle that effortlessly swaps targets and should perform well both in single target and moderate mob-pack sized cleave scenarios. The rotation overall is very slow paced and much more simple than it’s Legion counterpart.

is still considered our primary heavy hitter.

are now focus spenders as opposed to focus generators and deal a sizable amount of damage. New spells have been added to the Marksman toolkit -

have not changed. Marksman

War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Marksman Hunters
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Marksman Hunters the abilities affected by this change are:

Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event

Out with Artifact, in with Azerite!
With the conclusion of Legion, artifact weapons have become obsolete. In its place, Battle for Azeroth has created a new system called Azerite gear. Upon Pre-patch release, Thas'dorah will no longer be active. You will still retain the weapon and it will still be usable, however, the artifacts traits will be disabled as shown in the picture below.

As you progress through Battle for Azeroth, new Helmets, Shoulders and Chest pieces will be obtained that will each have the new Azerite tier system. Below is an example of how the Azerite system will look.

Class Specific Azerite Traits
There are many general traits that all classes can use. Below is a list of traits that are only attainable as a Marksman

Losing the Artifact
Artifact traits largely filled in some much-needed gaps during Legion. Traits such as

filled in some much-needed gaps to Legion Marksman rotation and added some new dynamics. Similar to Legion, the same situation is apparent in Battle for Azeroth’s new Azerite Traits. Traits such as

give added Focus regeneration which makes the rotation more smooth. Unfortunately, during Pre-Patch we will not have access to these traits.
The biggest loss that most players will notice is Marksman’s lack of execute. Most people will agree that
正中靶心
’s added execute mechanic was a much needed dynamic to the Marksmanship rotation. In Battle for Azeroth, the

talent has been reworked to provide an execute, however, it does not do not provide an engaging execute mechanic to the rotation and adds more RNG to the mix.
Another big change that most players will feel is
s viability. Due to the loss of

and

,
has been reverted to its baseline cooldown of 3 minutes with no added critical strike damage modifier or reduced cooldown. The loss of these traits makes
a very mediocre cooldown, despite the additional
瞄准射击
charge. In addition, Haste does not benefit Marksman
猎人
in Battle for Azeroth the way it did in Legion. With the new
瞄准射击
charge system and our limited focus supply, our rotation is constrained by our total Focus and Haste helps very little with the overall execution of it.
The artifact weapon also gave Marksman
猎人
s an added form of survival through

and

. Since these have been removed, Marksman
猎人
s have become a bit more squishy for the time being. Luckily, in Battle for Azeroth, Azerite traits have similar effects to these traits which will help our survivability.
Legendaries
Since Marksman has been completely overhauled, some Legendaries have changed. Below is a complete description of all possible legendaries obtainable by Marksmanship Hunters, as well as my recommendations on what to use.
General Hunter Legendaries
暗影猎手的巫毒面具
- Heals for 20% of your maximum health whenever
假死
is used, as well as 5% of your health every second for 10 seconds while you remain feigned. Nothing has changed about this legendary, however, due to the restructure of stats, Agility is worth more so this gains some value.

- Gives you an absorb shield for 25% of your maximum health for 30 seconds, every 30 seconds. This is a very good stat stick because of the raw amount of secondary stats it gives.

- Cause you to gain 3% health every second as long as you stand still. Nothing has changed about this legendary, however, due to the restructure of stats, Agility is worth more so this gains some value.

- Gives you 70% increased movement speed and 15% Haste for 10 seconds after applying a crowd control effect to mobs (stun, root or silence). It passively increases your movement speed by 10% and Haste by 2%. Due to the lack of Agility this piece loses some value, however it has an immense amount of secondary stats to make up for it, including adding 2% haste which currently is our best secondary.

- Gives a large amount of agility and some secondary stats. It has an on-use proc with a 1m15 cooldown that deals a heavy amount of AoE damage around the target hit. It is a very good burst AoE trinket.
Marksmanship Legendaries

by 800% and increases its range by 30 yards. Previously, while wearing this legendary it was worth using

during downtime. Now, however, due to the limited amounts of Focus we have, we cannot afford to use this Legendary (unless using for crowd control purposes in M+ for example).

talent without having to choose it. This allows you to select another trait in the tier. With the talent changes in Battle for Azeroth, the other abilities you have to choose from have changed. You now may choose between

should be taken for most situations unless burst damage is needed (Varimathras for example). Both of these talents are weak as of now, pending tuning in future builds. In addition, the lack of both secondaries and Agility lessen the usefulness of this Legendary.

has been removed, this effect has been modified for 8.0. It now gives a flat 3% Haste. While Haste is one of our best stats, this legendary does not offer any primary stat so it is not as good as some others.

- Since Marked Shot has been removed, this effect has been modified for 8.0. It now gives a flat 3% overall damage. This is now a very good passive effect considering most of our other legendaries are mediocre with the changes.

You may be wondering why
隐秘掠食者的斗篷
is on this list. Now that the passive bonus has been modified to just give a flat % buff, this legendary works across all specs now, as does
瑟雷姆的饥渴
and
风行者之速
. Due to the stat squish, Agility is now our most desired stat, followed by Mastery and Haste. In general, we now want high budget stat items, preferably with Haste on them. Items that lack Agility on them, such as rings aren’t nearly as valuable. However, now that
瑟雷姆的饥渴
,
隐秘掠食者的斗篷
and
风行者之速
provide a huge amount of raw stats/damage, they counteract the lack of agility. But, this means that Items such as

lose a ton of value. In addition, the new Talent’s we have to choose from for

aren’t very good in comparison to the Legion iteration. Legendaries such as

have very high stat values and are high budget pieces. Some other items that were good in Legion such as
乌尔的羽绒雪地靴

simply lost value due to how our spells were reworked in Battle for Azeroth.
Tier Set Bonuses
Again, due to Marksmanship's complete overhaul, some of our Tier sets that we have commonly been using in Legion will change. Below is a full description on relevant Tier sets and how we will use them in 8.0.
Tier 20
Item - Hunter T20 Marksmanship 4P Bonus
- Casting two
瞄准射击
s in a row increases your critical strike damage by 10% for 6 sec. Unfortunately, we can no longer cast two
瞄准射击
s back to back in the new Marksman rotation. Doing so would waste casts of
弹无虚发
. Aside from that, primary stats have been tuned so high that we cannot afford the loss of Agility to equip these pieces.
Item - Hunter T20 Marksmanship 4P Bonus

reduces the cast time of your next

by 8% and reduces its Focus cost by 8%. This effect is amazing for the newly designed Marksmanship

. Unfortunately, primary stats have been tuned so high that we cannot afford the loss of Agility to equip these pieces. Unless you have very high titanforged 4 set (950+), it is not worth equipping.
Tier 21
Item - Hunter T21 Marksmanship 2P Bonus
- They have modified this set bonus for 8.0. It now gives 5% increased Physical damage. This is not a flat 5% buff due to our damage breakdown.

s make up a very big chunk of our damage and

is magic damage, so this bonus does not effect it.
Item - Hunter T21 Marksmanship 4P Bonus
- They have modified this set bonus for 8.0. It now increases

damage dealt by 12%. This is a huge bonus for us in both single target and AoE so equipping this is a necessity.
Best MM Hunter Stats for 8.0
Disclaimer:
Due to how the stat squish and change in stats played out, stat scaling for 8.0 is a bit skewed. Sims have been modified for Battle for Azeroth but have not been specifically modified for pre-patch. Below is an approximate stat priority. These are
NOT
the same as they will be in Battle for Azeroth.

If you've saved any relics that had bad relic traits but were higher item level, use them! Weapon DPS is huge for us so any gain, even 5 item levels is a big upgrade. No more traits mean we want the highest item level relics in our weapons.
My Recommendation:
Always aim for the highest item level pieces. Try to get pieces with Mastery on them as much as possible since Its is good in both single target and AoE. For the rest of the stats (Critical Strike, Haste and Mastery), try to get an equal balance of them. The stat weights shown were gathered from using normalized stat simulations. This means that all stats are assumed equal and were then analyzed. In short, these weights say that for 1 point of Mastery, you will gain more DPS than you would for 1 point of Versatility. Basically, Mastery scales higher per point compared to the other stats. I've included Pawn strings because some people prefer to use them for ease of use. For the most accurate results, you should always SIM yourself, as these general stats will change based off of your personal gear.
Raidbots
makes this easy and very user friendly.
Racials in 8.0
Since the stat priorities are different for 8.0, racials are also different. Pre-Patch is only about a month long so it’s largely not worth it to race change for DPS purposes in my opinion. However, I am including this for completion purposes. Disclaimer: These sims are with the most updated APL we have, but could very well change in the near future. I will try to keep these as updated as possible but check back often!
Some assumptions in this sim:
This simulation was done using baseline Mythic Antorus raid gear and is just to give you an idea of how things look in 8.0.
The racial sim was done without a pet active since

is the highest simming for 8.0. This means that Orc is simming less since it does not benefit from

Why are some of the worst races in Legion all of a sudden good in 8.0 and BFA?
Most of the races such as Lightforged Draenei, scaled of off Weapon DPS or AP. Since the stats model has been reworked and primary stats are now, in general, the highest for most classes, this means racials such as

are much more significant now.

With the removal of artifact weapons come pre patch, relic traits are disabled. The highest ilvl relic should be used, regardless of trait.
With the change to primary stats, Agility is substantially worth more than secondary stats in Battle for Azeroth. In 8.0 however, secondary stats still have a decent weighting compared to primary stats. In general, it is still recommended that you sim your gear as this general setup might differ from your gear.
Raidbots
now has an up-to-date simming profile for Battle for Azeroth Pre-Patch.
Trinket Usage

remain the top trinkets simply due to their immense amount of Agility provided.

has not been scaled down quite as much as some of the other trinkets, and provides a good chunk of Haste, so this trinket is performing better than average currently.
Since
lost its Critical Damage aspect, trinkets such as

no longer benefit from aligning with it. On-use trinkets should be used on cooldown. If it is an AoE trinket, it should be used on cooldown, while as many adds are active as possible. Do not delay the cast too long or you will risk losing out on a use of the trinket.
Gems, Enchants and Consumables in 8.0
Gems, Enchants and Consumables have changed slightly due to the re balance of stats. Below is my recommendation for each.

has some caveats which worsen its effect. It’s RNG is two-fold. First, you cannot control whether

gets buffed. Ideally, every proc would align with

since it does significantly more damage. To a certain degree you can control it, however, prolonging using the proc causes you to ignore the rest of your rotation or miss another potential proc of

. Secondly,

falls short in AoE situations. Most AoE encounters have a short window when you need to AoE, whether its dungeon content or waves of adds in a raid encounter, due to the nature of

you cannot control when you will have this proc and therefore, in most cases, it's useless unless the stars align for you. It is generally recommended to take

in any situation with AoE. For pure single target, you can pick your poison between the RNG nature of

(which has the potential to do more damage than

Rotation Adaptations for Marksman Pre-Patch (8.0)

Single Target Rotation
There are no special single target rotation changes between the normal Marksman rotation for BFA and the Pre-Patch rotation. For a detailed description of rotation in Battle for Azeroth, check out the

Multiple Target Rotation
The only major change that affects our AoE occurs when using

Due to the Focus changes, Marksman AoE rotation is constrained by its total Focus and must often cast

to generate Focus mid-AoE. Talents such as
狙击高手

help our Focus situation a little, but it can still feel clunky at times. In Battle for Azeroth, a new Azerite trait called
集中火力
will be basically required to perform a smooth AoE rotation. Unfortunately, we will not have this trait come Pre-patch so our Focus will be very tight. Because of this, Marksman AoE for Pre-Patch is less fluid and might have to generate Focus earlier than normally necessary.

Lone Wolf in 8.0
Due to how the scaling works in 8.0,

vs pet scaling is different as compared to how it will be in Battle for Azeroth. Below is a breakdown of Marksmanship damage distribution for Pre-patch.
As you can see, our pet only contributes about 9% of our overall damage on a pure single target. Pets are only valuable in 1-2 target situations since, as Marksman, they do not contribute to AoE damage.

gives us a flat 10% damage increase, so in a single target situation,

is less than 1% better but, it gains value with more targets. Below is an approximate sim comparing

to with a pet in a single target situation. Disclaimer: These sims are with the most updated APL we have, but could very well change in the near future. I will try to keep these as updated as possible but check back often!
It is recommended to use
独来独往
in every situation, including single target and AoE as far as Pre-patch is concerned.
Pet Changes
Pterrordaxes are finally tameable pets!
All pet families have a set specialization that cannot be changed. Each pet family will be either Ferocity, Tenacity or Cunning.
All 3 specializations will deal the same damage and have the same amount of health and armor.
All specs have
低吼
and
急奔
, plus their appropriate basic attack (
爪击
,
撕咬
, or
拍击
).
When you enter a dungeon,
低吼
’s auto-cast is automatically turned off to avoid pulling aggro from the tank (you can turn it back on if you want). When you leave the dungeon, it gets flipped back on automatically.
躲闪
has been changed to also reduce the range at which enemies will aggro your pet by 6 yards. This should help with your pet accidentally pulling mobs when you try to sneak by them.
Each family will have at least one special ability. There are 6 major ability categories distributed among the pet families so that each specialization has at least one pet option for each of these abilities. For example, Bats have
and Spirit Beasts have
. Both do the same thing. All Exotic families have at least 2 special abilities/passives.
Battle resurrection is removed from Hunter pets completely. Heart of the Phoenix, Last Stand, Roar of Sacrifice and other old passives have also been removed. Worth noting that Quilen retains the Heart of the Phoenix but are the only pet to do so.
All Hunters get 10 new stable slots.
Ferocity Abilities
原始暴怒
: Increases haste by 30% for 40 sec for the group (Blood Lust). This is off the GCD.

: Passively gives you and your pet 10% leech.
Tenacity Abilities

: You and your pet take 20% reduced damage for 6 seconds (3 min cooldown). This will be valuable in dungeons and raids for extra survivability.

s deal most of their damage through their pets. Their pets are very tanky in comparison to Marksman and Survival

s and are able to survive assaults against multiple mobs and can solo elite mobs with ease. Beast Mastery

to gather multiple mobs while their pet does the majority of the work through Beast Cleave while the

s must rely on kiting more frequently, especially if a pet is not being used. While leveling is very possible as Marksman, it is typically slower compared to the other specs and is not recommended. Leveling is generally much easier when leveling with other people as a Marksman

. Their Warmode ability

allow for easy mob gathering.
Survival
Survival is in a very similar situation to Marksman in terms of pet survivability. Unlike Marksman though, Survival has many more burst abilities and is able to stack movement speed to quickly move through quests and do not utilize their pet as much for leveling. Rather than gathering multiple mobs, Survival will level using

Below is a suggested Talent setup for leveling purposes from levels 110-120 in Battle for Azeroth.
This is a hybrid build gives you increased movement speed for questing through

Talent/Ability Tuning Issues
- For a major 3 minute cooldown, this ability is very very underwhelming. We essentially gain 2 additional
瞄准射击
s from it. During Legion, it was a massive cooldown due to its interaction with applying Marking Targets, increased Critical Strike Damage from
快速击杀
and both
快速射击
and
乌尔的羽绒雪地靴
made it a very short cooldown, diversifying its usage. Currently, It's hardly a dps increase at all which feels awful for our only major cooldown, and a 3 minute one at that. In its current state, we are forced to use it during times of Focus regen.

- Currently after dismissing your pet, you gain the

buff, but on a ramping timer (Approx 1% every 6 sec for a total of 1 minute). The issue here is the ramp timer, not necessarily the ability itself. Having to wait a full minute to gain the full benefit of
独来独往
feels very cumbersome.

- At the moment, this ability competes in single target but falls off hard as soon as you add in another target. The issue here is not the damage, it is the immense focus cost. While 10 Focus doesn't seem very much, our rotation, especially in AoE is very Focus consuming. At the moment we must take Master Marksman due to the high Focus requirement. Due to the high Focus cost, keeping up

properly you actually must cast less

s because we physically do not have enough Focus to perform our rotation and keep up

- This talent is way too RNG to ever be usable except on an AoE sustained fight which never happens. In most AoE scenarios, waves of adds spawn or in M+ for intance, groups of adds occur in 30-40 sec intervals. With Volley only being 10%, it might not even deal damage to certain mobs or during AoE. Due to its RNG nature, we would never take this over Explosive Shot. It's damage is also a fair bit behind ES in its current iteration, RNG aside.

- While this talent seems fine at first glance, there are a couple of glaring issues with it. First off, we rarely actually cast multiple

s back to back. To perform optimal DPS, we must cast certain abilities on cooldown -

- and we must dump our

. Because of the timings here along with the charge system of

to give us enough Focus to cast the following ability, and sometimes we cast 2 in a row when we have a slight bit of down time. We rarely cast 2 let alone 3 or 4 in a row like this talent encourages. Secondly, this ability becomes virtually useless during times of high haste i.e

(and
狂暴
). The baseline cast of
稳固射击
is 1.75 seconds (typically it will be around 1.6 with most peoples haste levels, but these calculations are done without any haste considered). If you have 2 stacks of 20% reduced cast time this becomes baseline 1.12 seconds. Then taking into account
嗜血
the cast time becomes .78 seconds. Since the minimum GCD is .75 seconds, the haste from
or
狂暴
is basically useless in terms of
稳固集中
. Much of this talent goes to waste throughout the fight.

- The talent itself is fine and is basically a carry over from

. The problem here goes back to
itself in that this cooldown is not very useful for us. So reducing it’s cooldown doesn't really do much for us. This talent would almost have to be doubled for it to be worth taking with
in its current state.

is on a 30 sec cooldown and it does less damage then

I love mm Hunter, i agree with some things in the post like, serpent sting, it's an aewsome skill but the Focus cost of It not makes so usuable. And please blizzard bring back Kill shot, will fit properly in the mm hunter rotation.
But really good work in the changes on the mm hunter, loving It so bad!

when a person tries to tell you that BM has more durable pets and that you should kite while leveling. Made my day.
We are approaching an xpac whereby every pet's survivability is literally identical aside from family skills
head to fat panda land and grab a slacehide
it will be the default open world pet for MM and SV as it is the only ferocity pet with an active shield wall ability (1 min cd 50 % dmg reduction)
grab a stag/unicorn
they are the only (non bm only) tenacity pets with magic & enrage dispel. Those will be your default 5 man pets. Don't even think about LW 5 mans. Dispell is way too powerful to pass on it.
once you've covered that. Hope for 8.1 The 8.0 MM is a mess.

So i couldnt find anything regarding the lone wolf extra ability, in my case i see that i have an additional "Survival of the fittest" ability that is similar to the tenacity pet, do you know if theres a way to change it or is set up like that always?
