What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Best Marksmanship Hunter Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Marksmanship Hunter
Now that a corruption vendor has been implemented, a corruption "Best in Slot" list can be worked towards. Below is a list of corruptions broken down into a tier list. Any corruption
not
listed below should not be bought by the vendor. It is better to save your Echos of Nyalotha for one of the below corruptions.
"S" Tier
- Expedient is by far Marksmanship's best corruption. Marksmanship Hunters love haste so stacking Expedient is a no-brainer. We have a ton of Haste procs including
,
and
to name a few. Haste falls off a bit in AoE, but it is always good to have regardless.
- Masterful simply increases Marksmanship's base damage. Mastery is very strong for us, and it's solid in both single target and AoE. It's slightly behind Expedient in single target but surpasses it in AoE. It's good to have some Masterful in your setup, especially for AoE fights such as Hivemind or in Mythic+.
- Infinite Stars is one of our best corruptions on sustained single target. Infinite Stars falls off hard in AoE situations or if consistent target swapping is required (Think Drestagath or Mythic+). It excels on fights such as Maut or Shadhar though.
- Whispered Truths can only be found on
that drops from Prophet Skitra. It is by far the best corruption that we can obtain in terms of "DPS per point of corruption." This corruption lowers the cooldown of any Hunter ability, including
,
, etc.
"A" Tier
- Mastery procs are very strong for Marksmanship. The downside to Honed Mind as opposed to Masterful is it's RNG nature. Like Masterful, it's better in AoE than single target. Honed Mind is a very strong corruption relative to most others.
- Versatility is almost just as strong as Mastery for Marksmanship Hunters. In addition to giving a damage benefit, Versatility also provides some defensive benefits. It's a very good option for both single target and AoE.
- Void Ritual can be good in raid if you have other people running it. I generally don't recommend it since it depends on other party/raid members to also have it equipped. Likewise, it's also a proc and has a random nature, meaning it can perform good or bad, depending on when it procs. However, if you have others running it, Void Ritual can perform well in raid.
- Ineffable Truth is a solid corruption for Marksmanship but only at Rank 1. Rank 2 is very bad for us as it's "DPS per corruption" benefit is significantly worse than Ineffable Truth Rank 1. The cooldown reduction provided pairs well with our other cooldown reduction traits such as
and
.
"B" Tier
- Critical Strike isn't quite as valuable for Marksmanship Hunter as the other stats, but it does still have
value compared to other corruptions. Crit gains a bit of value in AoE situations.
- Racing Pulse is a solid Haste proc. Marksmanship loves Haste so naturally this isn't a bad corruption for us. Unlike Expedient though, Racing Pulse is RNG and can be unreliable.
- Critical Strike Damage is a solid option for Marksmanship Hunters, especially with multiple traits of
. Since Marksmanship Hunters prefer Haste and Mastery, Crit damage loses a bit of value compared to classes that stack Critical Strike. While not a bad option for us, there are better options.
- Up until recently, Gushing Wound was one of our best corruptions. With the introduction of the corruption vendor also came a nerf to Gushing Wound (-35% damage) which made it significantly worse. It's still better than a lot of other corruptions and it's a decent low-budget choice. Gushing Wounds scales with the pieces item level so be sure to only use Gushing Wounds on higher item level pieces.
Best in Slot Setups
Below is a list of a few corruption setups for different situations including a general build, a patchwork setup and in PvP. These are my personal recommendations to strive for. Like always, it is best to simulate your own character to find your personal best setup as the results may vary slightly. The below setups assume you have Rank 15 cloak and are up-to-date with your corruption resistance.
This setup is for general usage. It is a hybrid build that is good in most situations. I recommend using this build for single target situations with multiple target swapping (fights such as Drestagath, Illgynoth or Nzoth) or for AoE situations (fights such as Mythic+ or Hivemind).
(Rank 3) x3
(Rank 3) x3
x1
This is more of a niche setup for raid, but it's the best setup for most sustained single target fights such as Wrathion, Shadhar or Maut. It can also be good for prolonged and important single target phases such as Carapace or Nzoth's final phases.
(Rank 3) x3
(Rank 3) x1
x1
In PvP, you generally want harder hitting abilities for a short period of time, along with survivability. Versatility give syou the best of both so stacking it makes sense. Since you're reliably being targeted in PvP, Surging Vitality comes to the forfront along with Versatile and Whispered Truths.

Best Marksmanship Hunter Ny'alotha Weapons
Aside from random corruption effects, weapons from the Ny'alotha raid have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a sub-par effect, you can always cleanse it. As a Hunter, you can obtain a bow with the following effect:
always comes with
- This is one of the best "DPS per corruption" effects we can obtain. It has some caveats though (see below).
The Whispered Truths effect is very valuable both offensively and defensively. The effect not only reduces offensive Hunter abilities, but it also reduces defensive Hunter abilities. This means that if you
, use
or even use
to interrupt something, the bow has a chance to reduce the cooldown on those abilities. The downside of this effect of course discourages Hunters from using their defensive abilities to optimize damage. However, even with the bow at 50% effectiveness (assuming it reduces non-offensive abilities 50% of the time) it still out performs most corruptions.
Hunters also have
available to them, which has a base 10 item levels higher than the corrupted bow since it drops off of N'zoth. Due to the item level difference and the recent addition of the corruption vendor - assuming equal corruption - Marksmanship Hunters prefer to run the gun over the bow. The bow isn't bad for Marksmanship by any means, but it is generally always worth using
if you have the option.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- In most scenarios during Raid, we will be taking
. Posthaste allows us to remove any snare on us via
. It also propels us a good distance in case we need to avoid a mechanic. As a Hunter you should barely notice this effect.
For
, Hunters can use
and
to avoid these void zones, though the most important part is making sure to position yourself in such a way that placing the zone does not force you into a corner. The legendary cloak dispel can be used in cases where strategy restricts you from moving.
- Since the Thing from Beyond disappears when stunned or CC'd, make use of
and
to successfully avoid their pursuit.
- Highly recommended to have
,
and even
ready in order to get out of the effect, though you should be wary of letting your corruption get this high in the first place.
How Much Corruption Should a Marksmanship Hunter Take?
Since Hunters are extremely mobile, we have a pretty high lenience in the corruption we can take. As a general rule of thumb, I suggest staying
below 80
. Hunters have many tools to deal with the slow and the
, including
,
,
(with Posthaste),
,
and even
if necessary. Using Feign Death on the Thing from Beyond will instantly make it disappear! We never want to go above 80 corruption due to the decreased healing and increased damage taken effects. This may be a viable option for farm down the road, but I highly advise against it while progressing through Ny'alotha.

Question. If Verse/Mastery are stat priority, then why is the Haste Boost Corruption the best available? Wouldn't it make more sense to get Mastery or Verse % boost corruption? Please explain this. Makes no sense.

This seems a bit off? Why isn't stacking Gushing Wounds good anymore? The DPS per corruption point is still really good, second to Infinite Stars... why isn't it worth stacking? I understand it was nerfed by 35% but according to your own meters and my own sims it's still the preferred corruption to stack. I'm currently planning on IS3 x1, Expedient x1-3, Gushing x3, Whispered Truths x1 (if I can get the damn thing to drop from M Skitra). I'm not seeing the massive value you see from Masterful and struggling to see the poor value placed on Gushing.

It looks like the table for BiS corruptions is aimed at staying under 40 corruption w/max cloak, is this correct? (Personally I don't feel like the rather small DPS boost I get from over 40 is worth dealing with the Thing...which my crap RNG tends to spawn multiples of back to back) I assume as corrupt resist goes up, we'd just stack more of the same?
Also, from comments in the hunter (MM) discord, it seems Ineffable Truth is regarded as not worth taking at all.....has anyone played around with it? Does it only look good on paper?
