A core choice at the start of your journey in the Shadowlands will have you decide where your allegiance lies; would you rather support the Kyrian of Bastion, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, the Night Fae of Ardenweald, or the Venthyr of Revendreth?
Choosing a covenant is the most important decision your character will make in Shadowlands, as the covenant abilities and soulbinds will significantly impact your spec's gameplay and performance. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story in different paths.
In this Shadowlands guide, we will help you choose the right covenant for your playstyle, based on how much they impact your performance as a Marksmanship Hunter, updated for .

Best Covenants for Marksmanship Hunters
Night Fae is currently our best Covenant choice. It is currently the best option for both single target and AoE.
野性之魂
s gives us insane burst every 2 minutes. Niya is our best soulbind and offers traits such as
林地复兴
that complement our toolkit. She also gives us some solid defensive bonuses to aid our survival.
Kyrian isn't too far behind Night Fae (~3% in single target) and stands as our second-best covenant option. Kyrian offers a bit more consistent damage when compared to Night Fae due to
共鸣箭
's lower cooldown and flexibility. While Kyrian falls behind a bit in single target, it can keep up with Night Fae in Aoe, depending on cadences. Generally, Night Fae is superior in more organized groups that can play around its 2-minute cooldown, but Kyrian remains competitive regardless.
While Night Fae is the clear winner, luckily for us, Kyrian isn't too far behind, giving us another option if desired (Kyrian is actually our best PvP covenant). The bad news is that if you were hoping to go Venthyr or Necrolord, they're significantly further behind in terms of DPS (Venthyr more so than Necrolord). While both Covenants offer some solid options in terms of Soulbinds,
死亡飞轮
and
劫掠射击
are pretty underwhelming.
Below is a quick breakdown of all the Covenant options we have as Marksmanship Hunters, along with their relative strength.

Marksmanship Hunter Covenant Popularity
Below you can see the data on what are the most picked Covenants for Marksmanship Hunters. This data updates automatically and comes directly from Blizzard's API.
Marksmanship Hunter Raiding Covenant Analysis
In the following section, I'll go through each of the four Covenants and dissect what makes each one good or bad in Castle Nathria.
Kyrian
Kyrian is a bit worse than Night Fae in single target and comparable to it in AoE (typically a tad worse depending on the situation). The nature of
共鸣箭
pairs well with Marksmanship's burst damage via abilities such as
二连发
,
乱射
, and
爆炸射击
. Our best stat is Critical Strike, so 30% additional Critical Strike on a 1-minute cooldown is very welcome and synergizes well with our toolkit. Additionally, the fact that Resonating Arrow is on a minute cooldown makes it highly flexible, usable for different key points throughout fights. For fights such as Sludgefist, Huntsman Altimor, Sun King's Salvation, Lady Inerva, and Stone Legion Generals, having frequent, on-demand damage via Resonating Arrow is amazing.
As far as Soulbinds go, the Pelagos Soulbind, along with Conduits such as
衰竭印记
, only exacerbates how good Kyrian is for Marksmanship.
战斗冥想
gives us a solid amount of passive damage during cooldowns while Enfeebled Mark gives a straight damage boost during Resonating Arrow, further increasing our burst damage window every minute. Pelagos is also one of the few Soulbinds which offer two potency slots without having to sacrifice the DPS traits in the tree. This allows us to equip another potency conduit once it's unlocked at Renown 21. At the moment, we'll be able to choose between
神射手的专注
and
强效精准
to fill that second slot.
Finally, Kyrian gives us access to
召唤执事者
. When summoned, this handy Swolekin gives us access to
静谧之瓶
. Phial of Serenity is essentially a better Health Potion that restores health as well as cures diseases, poisons, curses, and most bleeds. Unfortunately, this no longer works for certain mechanics in Castle Nathria (such as
锯齿撕裂
on Stone Legion Generals) but it does work for others. It's a highly useful defensive ability and with Soulbind traits such as
友谊契约
, it can have a fairly low cooldown.
Venthyr
Venthyr seems like it could be really strong in single target situations, however, it simply doesn't do enough damage to compete with Kyrian or Night Fae at the moment. By the nature of the ability,
劫掠射击
is decent in single target, but is fairly useless in AoE scenarios. You typically get about one
夺命射击
proc per cast of Flayed Shot. Unfortunately, the DPS of both Flayed Shot and the additional Kill Shots don't really deal enough damage to compete with other Covenant abilities. The fact that it does mediocre single target damage with zero AoE application makes it highly undesirable in terms of DPS. Unlike the other Covenant options, Flayed Shot performs better in sustained situations. In any fight that requires burst damage Flayed Shot won't perform well. It should perform fairly well on sustained single target fights such as Hungering Destroyer or Artificer Xy'Mox.
Unlike other Hunter specs, Marksmanship has a talent that synergizes with Flayed Shot.
夺命之眼
gives us two charges of Kill Shot and every time we Kill Shot, we generate
瞄准射击
charges a bit faster. The extra casts of Aimed Shot is where this talent really shines when paired with Flayed Shot. Despite sounding really good together, the few additional Aimed Shots throughout the fight aren't enough to warrant the loss of Double Tap, typically. Additionally, due to Marksmanship's natural Focus constraints we physically don't have enough Focus to utilize the additional Aimed Shots generated from the Dead Eye + Flayed Shot combo. While Dead Eye is a solid option if you do opt to go Venthyr, compared to other Covenants Flayed Shot falls short.
Nadjia is Marksmanship's best Soulbind option for the Venthyr Covenant once we are maxed renown, but initially, we'll be using Theotar. For Nadjia,
无畏决斗者
is what makes her good. Until we unlock it, Theotar will suffice. They offer similar potency and endurance slots, ultimately it comes down to
抚慰阴影
being a bit stronger than
兴奋追猎者
for Marksmanship Hunters. The other benefit that Theotar gives us is another early endurance slot, versus Nadjia who gives a finesse conduit slot. For the potency slot, we'll use either
强效精准
,
神射手的专注
, or
强化弹矢
. Finally, the Covenant specific conduit for Venthyr is
强化弹矢
, which unfortunately isn't very good compared to our other covenant conduits. It simply buffs Kill Shot procs obtained from
劫掠射击
and increases Flayed Shot's proc chance slightly.
强化弹矢
should be used in single target but typically we'll want to use either
强效精准
or
神射手的专注
instead for AoE.
The utility ability Venthyr gives is
暗影之门
. It really doesn't have too many uses in raid. Its main purpose is movement utility and aside from a few niches, I can't think of many times we'd need a teleport. Hunters already have access to
猎豹守护
and
逃脱
, so our movement is already fairly good. Soulbind traits such as
混沌代理人
give Door of Shadows a disorient which may be useful, but compared to some other Covenant utility it doesn't compare.
Necrolord
Necrolord is currently our third-best performing Covenant in both single target and in AoE. I think
死亡飞轮
is a super cool ability but sadly with its current tuning, it doesn't do enough damage to be good. The Focus it generates is really good, however. Death Chakram does a fair amount of damage in AoE, although it doesn't compare to its Kyrian or Night Fae counterparts. The good thing about Death Chakram is that is allows us to deal a solid amount of damage every 45 sec. This means that it's very versatile and can be used for multiple different fights that require priority adds or burst windows.
通灵弹幕
, the Covenant specific Conduit for Necrolord, is a solid option and competes with our other potency Conduits. Necrotic Barrage simply buffs the damage of Death Chakram and increases its Focus regen per bounce.
For Soulbinds, Emeni is the way to go if you opt to go Necrolord. Emeni's strengths lie in her signature ability
身先士卒
. The agility gained from it is massive and lines up well with Marksmanship cooldowns. Emeni's other DPS trait is
啮咬咀嚼者
which gives Haste after defeating enemies. In raid content, "killing targets" is fight dependent so the benefit of this trait differs. Not that it matters very much as Marksmanship generally doesn't like Haste so we typically avoid this trait anyway. Emeni forces us to choose between Gnashing Chompers and a second potency conduit. In the case of Emeni, we want to go for a second potency trait.
Necrolord gives us access to
血肉铸造
. At first glance, Fleshcraft seems to be an amazing defensive for us, and as many people know, Marksmanship lacks proactive mitigation. While it does provide a fairly large and useful shield, the major downside of this ability is that it requires us to fully channel it for 4 sec. With that in mind, there are a couple of different Soulbind traits that we'll have access to which make Fleshcraft a bit more appealing. Abilities such as
艾米妮的优美之皮
and
艾米妮的可行动躯体
give us a bit more incentive to utilize the ability mid-fight. Of course, content such as Mythic+ gives us ample time to channel it while traveling between packs.
Night Fae
The Night Fae Covenant is Marksmanship's best Covenant.
野性之魂
lines up perfectly with
百发百中
, giving us a solid amount of burst every two minutes. Wild Spirits excels in single target, especially due to its synergy with
巨蛇追猎者的诡计
. In AoE, Wild Spirits offers us the highest burst potential. The major downside of Wild Spirits is that it's stuck on a 2-minute cooldown which makes it fairly inflexible. It will excel on AoE fights such as Sun King's Salvation or Stone Legion Generals and will perform well anytime burst damage is needed, such as on Sludgefist.
For Soulbinds, Niya is the way to go for raiding.
灵魂协调
is a very strong conduit that should be taken as one of our potency conduits. It extends Wild Spirits' duration by 3 seconds and increases the damage that Wild Spirits does. Niya's signature ability is
林地复兴
. Grove Invigoration grants us a small amount of passive Mastery throughout the fight, as well as a large chunk of Mastery every time we use Wild Spirits. Since we always line up Wild Spirits with Trueshot, we will always have a huge Mastery buff during our cooldowns which synergizes very well. Unlike most other Soulbinds, Niya has two DPS traits available at the end of her tree. Players can choose between
尼娅的工具:锉刀
or to go for a second Conduit slot in addition to grabbing
尼娅的工具:毒药
. The latter relies on landing some interrupts, but it's generally the better option assuming you can get a few. In raid, Burrs is typically the way to go as it does massive single target damage. Either route is solid though, so it really depends. If you do choose to grab the second potency Conduit,
神射手的专注
synergizes really well with Spirit Attunement's increased duration.
Finally,
灵魂变形
is Night Fae's utility Covenant ability. It's definitely one of the coolest abilities in the game, allowing you to shift into different animal forms while providing a teleport and a solid movement speed boost. Practically speaking, however, Hunters don't have too many uses for it considering we have
猎豹守护
and
逃脱
. It does serve some purpose but Hunters won't typically use it as often as some other classes might.
Marksmanship Hunter Mythic+ Covenant Analysis
The choices do not change with the exception of Night Fae; check the Raiding paragraph for a description.
Venthyr and Necrolord fall even further behind in Mythic+ while Kyrian and Night Fae remain on top. The major difference in relevant strength can be seen in Night Fae, as it gains some value since it can be used in AoE more reliably. That being said, Kyrian is still quite good. Despite
共鸣箭
performing slightly worse when compared to
野性之魂
, it can be used much more often and is more diverse in how you use it.
In terms of defensives, Kyrian's
静谧之瓶
and Necorlord's
血肉铸造
are amazing for survival. While they can be useful,
灵魂变形
and
暗影之门
don't really serve many purposes in dungeons, aside from the occasional skip here and there (which we can typically do anyways via
假死
or
伪装
).
Night Fae
If you do opt to go Night Fae for Mythic+, it's important to note that Korayn is another solid option that offers a slightly different damage profile compared to Niya. Korayn offers both
荒猎团战术
and
争先打击
, which are absolutely insane in Mythic+. Considering every pack is considered a "new" enemy, both traits apply to every pack we encounter. This means you'll enter every pack dealing an additional 10% damage with an additional 25% Critical Strike chance. Pairing this with our upfront burst of
二连发
,
乱射
, and
爆炸射击
, we gain quite a bit of bonus damage from these traits alone. Comparing Korayn to Niya, Korayn provides a bit more sustained damage throughout the dungeon by having burst damage every pack, while Niya's damage is concentrated into
野性之魂
due to
林地复兴
. As far as Covenant viability, usefulness, and what Conduits to take, nothing else changes. For additional info, refer to the Raiding paragraph.
