Build Overview for Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
Lightning Trapsin is one of the most popular builds for an Assassin, using
Lightning Sentry
and
Death Sentry
as primary abilities. The corpse explosion effect on Death Sentry makes clearing large groups of enemies a breeze with this build. Trapsin is also a highly recommended build for new players coming to Diablo II for the first time, as this build doesn't require expensive gear to get going (but it does get expensive for end-game Assassins) and is a relatively safe playstyle, dropping Traps from a distance.
This build also uses Traps that deal multiple types of damage, making it relatively straightforward for different enemy types. Assassins are also a popular choice for Player versus Player content, as Assassins have a large toolkit at their disposal. As for playstyle, it is very straightforward. By just throwing traps, this build offers low skill requirements, again making it a great choice for beginners.

Weaknesses of the Lightning Trapsin Assassin
Key Gear Considerations for Lightning Trapsin Assassin
For the Lightning Trapsin, traps can benefit from -% to enemy resistance. Because of this, there is a choice to be made between dual wielding claws for the extra block chance via
Weapon Block
or using
Crescent Moon
and a shield of your choice.
Stat Priority for Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
These are the recommended stat assignments for Lightning Trapsin Assassin. These may vary depending upon your gear requirements and how you choose to play your build. Hardcore and PvP characters in particular will want to invest most of their points into Vitality.
Stat
Points to Invest
Notes
Strength
95, or more for gear
Strength determines what type of gear your Assassin can wear, as well as how much melee damage you do. The melee damage isn't important for this type of build, so really just focus on getting enough Strength to equip the best gear possible.
95 Strength
is required to equip
War Traveler
Boots, while
156 Strength
is required if you decide to wear a
Spirit
Shield.
Dexterity
79, or more for gear
Dexterity determines Block chance and attack rating. For an Assassin, you need Dexterity to equip Claw Weapons, so definitely invest points here. How much you'll need is dependent on what type of Claw you find, but for some of the best Claws, you'll need
79 Dexterity
. If you don't wear Claws, don't invest points here.
Vitality
All Remaining points
Vitality determines Health total, Stamina total, and Stamina recovery. This is where you'll be investing all points after reaching the necessary Strength and Dexterity requirements for items.
Energy
None
Energy determines Mana total and Mana recovery. Assassins do use Mana, but it isn't worth investing Stat Points into Energy, so ignore this stat completely.
Skills for the Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
Assassins have access to three Skill Trees, Martial Arts, Shadow Disciplines, and Traps. As a Lightning Trapsin, you'll be focusing most of your Skill points into the Traps Skill tree, giving you access to your primary abilities
Lightning Sentry
and
Death Sentry
. Something that is unique to the Assassin is how much synergy there is in the Traps Skill tree, basically all the necessary skills for this build will improve other skills by picking them. So, all 5 of the Skills taken in the Traps Skill tree will be maxed out at 20/20.
Lightning Sentry
Death Sentry
Shock Web
Charged Bolt Sentry
Fire Blast
Lightning Sentry
and
Death Sentry
is this builds primary two skills, they do the most damage and it is what this build focuses on. Lightning Sentry to kill enemies and then Death Sentry to explode those corpses for even more damage. Now, Lightning Sentry receives synergy bonuses from
Shock Web
,
Charged Bolt Sentry
, and
Death Sentry
. Death Sentry receives synergy bonuses from
Fire Blast
and
Lightning Sentry
. Naturally, we want to invest Skill points into all of these skills and get Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry at maximum power.

For 5 Skill Points,
Burst of Speed
has insane value and becomes a key part of this build's ability to clear quickly. Keep up Burst of Speed at all times to move faster.
Weapon Block
1 point
12
Because we'll be wearing Claws (as they have +Traps Skill) this becomes a valuable skill point to give us an additional block chance without having to wear a Shield. With 5 skill points, you'll receive 42% Block chance. If you are wearing a Weapon and Shield combination, don't invest a point here.
Cloak of Shadows
1 point
12
Cloak of Shadows
allows the Assassin to boost their defense and reduce defense of enemies nearby. A really useful skill for only 1 Skill point.
Fade
1 point
18
If you are not using dual claws, one point can be allocated to
Fade
instead of
Weapon Block
to assist with shoring up our resistances, especially if you happen to have a Sunder Charm. You can swap between
Fade
and
Burst of Speed
as needed.
Mind Blast

Mind Blast
stuns enemies near the skill location and has a small chance to convert those enemies for a short period of time. This can be a life-saver in some situations.

Skill Rotation for Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
What skills you use on your Lightning Trapsin typically comes down to the number of enemies on the screen.
Lightning Sentry stacked on top of one another is the most efficient way to kill large groups of enemies.
If there are more enemies than your Lightning Sentry can handle, begin to also throw Death Sentry down, which will explode previously killed enmies for even more damage.
Use Fire Blast against Lightning immune enemies in combination with the corpse explosion effect of your Death Sentry.
Mind Blast can stun a group of enemies to give you more time to lay additional traps, or stun enemies on top of corpses for Death Sentry.
Keep up Burst of Speed at all times.
Leveling as a Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
Leveling as a Lightning Trapsin isn't bad, because
Fire Blast
and
Wake of Fire
are really powerful skills early on and can carry an Assassin through the first difficulty easily. Once you reach about level 40, you can easily Reset your skill points and change over to the Lightning Trapsin Build you'll finish the game off with. Each difficulty of the game, you get one free Skill Reset, by completing the "Den of Evil" quest in Act I.
Assassin Leveling Guide for Diablo II: Resurrected
Best Mercenary for Lightning Trapsin Assassin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
As a Lightning Trapsin, because you want to stay back to throw traps down, your Mercenary is actually really important for this build to succeed. It also helps if you put the right equipment on your Mercenary, your Merc can help you kill Lightning immune enemies. It is recommended to pick up an Act 2 Mercenary with the Aura
Holy Freeze
, as this can give your traps more time to deal damage to enemies.
Weapon
- The
Infinity
Runeword is extremely valuable. Infinity offers the
Conviction Aura
, which reduces the defenses and resistances of nearby enemies. With Ininfity, the Trapsin's Merc will offer both
Holy Freeze
and Conviction, a powerful Aura combo. Use
Insight
as a starter item to help with your Mana regeneration.
Helmet
-
Andariel's Visage
,
Vampire Gaze
, or
Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest
are all good options. Each of these offer some form of Leech, which is really important for keeping the Mercenary alive (and keeping the Auras up for the Assassin).
Body Armor
- The
Fortitude
Runeword is recommended, offering Resistances, Enhanced Damage, Defense, and Life. You need your Mercenary to stay alive, so they can keep up the valuable Auras. Alternatives to the Fortitude Runeword are
Treachery
,
Duriel's Shell
, or
Shaftstop
which aren't quite as good but give the Mercenary everything we're looking for.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin Best in Slot (BiS) Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 6
This section covers recommended BiS gear for endgame (upper-level Hell). These are not the only viable alternatives, and there may be decent budget options available. Depending on whether you trade, you may also be limited to "what you get is what you use."
Lightning Trapsin Assassin BiS Weapon
A Lightning Trapsin will want +Skills, -% Enemy Lightning Resistance, and +Resistances, meaning the actual Best piece of Equipment for a Trapsin is going to be
Magic Claws
socketed with Lightning
Rainbow Facet
. Magic Claws can offer +3 All Skills, +3 Death Sentry, and +3 Lightning Sentry, which is essentially +6 to Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry. A rather superb choice is to use
Crescent Moon
due to the -35% Enemy Lightning Resistance, the small chance to apply level 13
Static Field
on strike, and 20% attack speed which will affect your trap placement speed. the Other than that, a decent option is
Heart of the Oak
if you plan to use a Flail and Shield combo to be more defensive. Another great Claw choice is
Bartuc's Cut-Throat
.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin BiS Shield
Ideally, the Lightning Trapsin isn't going to use a Shield and instead would prefer +6 to Lightning Sentry on both Claw weapons, but since getting two of those claws with two sockets each might be time consuming, it can be a good idea to use a
Spirit
Shield.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin BiS Body Armor
Like most end-game builds,
Enigma
Runeword is your best option for a Body Armor.
Teleport
actually pairs very well with the playstyle of a Trapsin, allowing for the Assassin to quickly move around the battlefield, surrounding a group of enemies, and placing traps down while doing so. While working toward obtaining an Enigma,
Treachery
is a fantastic second choice for Body Armor, offering +2 Assassin Skills.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin BiS Helm
For best Helmets, a Lightning Trapsin wants a
Griffon's Eye Diadem
since not only does it provide much needed -% Enemy Lightning Resistance, but it also gives +1 to all skills, and helps us achieve our
Teleport
breakpoints easier for
Enigma
thanks to the Faster Caste Rate it provides. A good
Magic
or
Rare
Circlet that offers +All Skills, +Traps Skills, or +Assassin Skills, and +Resistances with sockets would also be a suitable choice.
Harlequin Crest
is likely your second best option for a Helmet slot on a Lightning Trapsin, which offers +2 All Skills, 50% Magic Find, and physical damage reduction. Regardless of which you choose, you will want to socket it with a Lightning
Rainbow Facet
.

Goldwrap
is also a fantastic choice for the Belt slot.

For the Gloves equipment slot, there are a few options for Faster Cast Rate.
Magefist
and
Trang-Oul's Claws
are both great options that have a decent chunk of Faster Cast Rate. For the Trapsin, you want either Faster Cast Rate or Increased Attack Speed. Throwing out Traps requires Increased Attack Speed and everything else is Faster Cast Rate.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin BiS Charms
Small Charms
- Typically for Small Charms, a Lightning Trapsin should look for All Resistance and +Life Charms, to combat the Resistances needed for Hell Difficulty. Picking up extra Resistances from Charms will make gearing much easier to deal with.
Annihilus
is the best Small Charm you can have in your inventory, granting +1 Skills, +Attributes, All Resistances +10-20, and even a Bonus Experience modifier, making it very valuable.
Large Charms
- Similar to Small Charms, the same applies to Large Charms. All Resistance, Bonus Life, and Magic Find are what you are looking for. For unique Large Charms, work your way towards obtaining a
Hellfire Torch
, which grants +Skills, +Attributes, and All Resistances +10-20.
Grand Charms
- For Grand Charms, you want to acquire a
Crack of the Heavens
to break the Lightning immunity that many monsters will have depending on your location and monster affixes, but as a consequence you will need to find more sources of Lightning Resistance via Small Charms and the like. Any Grand Charm with
+Trap Skills
is a potent upgrade for a Lightning Trapsin, giving a boost to your five primary abilities. Another Grand Charm you can look for is
Gheed's Fortune
, giving a massive boost to Gold drops, reducing Vendor Price, and a chunk of Magic Find. This Grand Charm drops from any monster in Hell difficulty.

Lightning Trapsin Assassin Breakpoints
Breakpoints are specific percentage values at which point an animation for Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR), Faster Block Rate (FBR), and Increased Attack Speed (IAS) become a frame slower or faster. Diablo II: Resurrected has preserved the 25 frames per second (fps) animation speed of actions from the original. Hitting a breakpoint not only moves the animation along quicker, it allows the character to do more actions in a shorter period of time. While it may not seem like much to reduce the action by a single frame, breakpoints can add up significantly.
IAS is too complicated to put into a table, so we have provided a link to a calculator. The other breakpoints are listed below:
