Guide to the Garrison Lunarfall Excavation / Frostwall Mines
This guide covers the
Lunarfall Excavation / Frostwall Mines
- a preset Garrison building in Warlords of Draenor that provides ore for all.
What is it good for?
Professions - it allows you to mine nodes in your garrison for professions that need ore regardless of whether you have Mining.
Battle pets - there is a small chance to get a special pet from mining nodes, even if you don't have the profession.

Preset building Level 1 blueprints require a short quest. These buildings can be put on a level 2 Garrison: Mine at 92, Fishing Shack at 94, and Herb Garden at 96.
You can upgrade your Garrison to Level 2 at 92 or earlier on completion of the questlines culminating

The level 2 versions of these blueprints can be purchased for once you have a Talador outpost or level 96.

Level 1: Allows players to mine Draenic Stone from mineral nodes in Draenor. Draenic Stone can be converted to work orders for Draenor minerals. 7 Work Orders
Level 2: Allows followers with the Mining trait to work here, granting a unique bonus (adds mining carts). Also opens a new mineshaft, granting access to additional mining nodes. 14 Work Orders
Level 3: A final mineshaft allows access to rich mining nodes. In addition, garrison guards will patrol your mine, keeping it clear of hostile Goren. 21 Work Orders.
You can mine the following ore from your mine, even without Mining:

with mine it is no longer necessary to spend so much time mining outdoors like MoP
You should always upgrade your Level 1 mine immediately. The plans for the Level 2 mine are unlocked essentially at the same time as you can obtain the Level 1 mine. You should probably clean out the Level 1 mine first though; I believe the Level 2 mine will respawn a whole new set of nodes regardless of whether the Level 1 mine had any in it, when the Level 2 mine opens.
Update (5 Dec)
s are still spawning in mines without followers.
As of 4 Dec Cory Stockton reports this to be a bug:
Carts showing up without a follower parked is a bug on our end. The carts are bonus you get based on having a Mining follower parked at the Mine. We reduced the overall number of carts but increased the amount of loot you get from each one. Thanks for the questions!
Carts no longer seem to spawn continually throughout the day and they seem to be respawned along with ore nodes at the daily reset. There seem to be 3-4 at most.
For those wondering where to buy your blueprints look no further!
If you goto your capital city for Horde you can buy it for a special item that you get from questing
But if you want to spend gold as a Horde goto your garrison and look for
As alliance its similar but different NPC's of course.
For special item currency in the Capital City. And then the gold vendor at
. The gold vendors for both Alliance and Horde are right next to your architect table. A Goblin or Gnome. Cheers and good luck!
Note that the items you get from quests can differ, there are two different types
Outpost Building Assembly Notes
which are used to buy things like
Garrison Blueprint: Salvage Yard, Level 2
Garrison Blueprint: Frostwall Tavern, Level 2
. While the other one
Comprehensive Outpost Construction Guide
can be used to get things like
Garrison Blueprint: Spirit Lodge, Level 2
Garrison Blueprint: Mage Tower, Level 2
. But if you plan on just spending gold it can cost either, 750g, 1,000g, or even up to 1,500g. I hope this helps!
The guide says that there is a quest to get the level 1 mine but doesn't say what that quest is.
EDIT: Did some research and found that the quest (which requires level 92 is "Things are not Goren our way")
by far this is my favorite. it has been really helpful for gathering minerals and lvling mining especially on my crowded server.
I've also gotten arrakoa archaeology fragments from the mining carts. In fact, most of the archaeology drops I've gotten have been arrakoa.
Does it matter whitch level is my follower?
When you have Rangari Kaalya as a follower it says that you will get mining carts, but my other mines get mining carts even without her. Does she give you extra carts? It seems you have to assign her to get the improved production.
When you have the Lvl3 Mine, you are able to fish
; which turns you into a pale orc for 5 minutes.
How often does the mine spawn ore nodes? I logged on to do my dailies this morning, but have no new nodes in my mine, even though my goblin npc's are standing around and my farm had spawned all it's herb nodes.
Why do the miners just stand still half the time, are they "Stoned" ?
Was curious to find out if anyone else that plays both horde and alliance and have level 3 mines on both are having the same issue as me. In my level 3 mine on horde, I see goren every day. The other day I killed about 10 that were just roaming around, they didn't drop any ore and I saw 0 mine carts while I was in the mine that day. I also watched as one walked over my dead guards body. The goren and the guards (actually called Frostwall Grunt) are level 90. The guards have 11.5k health while the goren have 13.1k. The miners have 17k health. Here is what doesn't make sense... in my alliance level 3 mine, the guards are level 100 and have just under 300k health and I almost never seen goren. My horde mine had a follower working while alliance did not. I tried removing the follower in my horde mine to see if anything changed but nothing did.
Is anyone else with level 3 mines on both factions noticing this or is this possibly a bug? It doesn't make sense to me that my guards have less health than the miners and goren and are being killed by the goren.
Does anyone as any idea how you acess the zone behind the waterfall?
I'm not quite sure why but I took my follower off the mine and I still find mine carts around my mine, worth noting, now I have another follower for missions :)
Does the mine yield more ore if I am a miner myself?
from work orders you may receive
Also you appear to receive 3
s in a level 2 mine and 4 in level 3. Still seems to be without a follower assigned
Coffee stacks at 20 btw
As noted, the only purpose for assigning a follower to the Mine is to increase the yield of your work orders, up to the maximum of 7 ore per work order (an increase of 40%). This is due to Blizzard rounding down from 7.5, which is what you should get for 50% increase from a follower. The same applies to the Herb Garden. However, the follower there also allows planting of a single herb. With the Barn, the rounding down of the .5 is not that obvious for the large beasts, as you get 22 fur/leather from 1 order.

Level 2: Allows followers with the Mining trait to work here...which will require the inn level 2....to change the proff trait or wait until level 98...someone at blizz really needs a massive pickaxe through the head with that retarded blunder...much like the missing zones...go blizztards
I have a level 3 mine and I'm not a miner. There are supposedly 36 work slots, and yet, I have tons of Draenic stone in my bank because there are never enough work slots.
By comparison, I have a level 3 herb garden and never use even half the slots.
What's with the mine? Is there a work slowdown going on? Why can't they keep up with orders?
Once you reach Level 96, you really must get
, which gives you
. With this mining pick, just keep it in your inventory (you don't need to equip it, just keep it in your inventory), and you will half the time it takes you to mine the ore. This also stacks with
, to make it a very quick job to mine the ore!
Question.... I didn't mine my mines for two days and now it's closed off. How do I get it opened again? I've ALREADY had it opened before so a quest isn't avail. But I'm not sure how to get it to open up. Thanks
Level 3: A final mineshaft allows access to rich mining nodes. In addition, garrison guards will patrol your mine, keeping it clear of hostile Goren.
Does this mean at Level 3, we will stop getting random Goren spawns? They usually drop 10+ ores at 1 go. So losing that might be counterproductive.
