What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Enhancement Shaman
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER for an Enhancement Shaman. Your decisions are sometimes dictated by the specific content you are doing, so ideally you should make your choice based on what your goals are.
Most flexible (and ideal) choices:
- Haste is generally the
ideal
pick because of the number of external Haste sources (such as
) that we stack. Stacking this will rarely do you wrong.
- Crit amps are an alternative that works well in situations with a lot of AoE with you using
, but will in general fall slightly behind Expedient in single target.
- Even following the nerf this will likely still be a reasonably reliable and strong choice in single target (but worse than Expedient), with some solid cleave potential. Note though this scales with item level, so it's important to pair it with strong pieces.
Niche but strong one-of alternatives:
- While Stars has been nerfed a lot and is a purely single target choice, this is something that can work in specific situations and will beat out others if you're willing to gamble.
- For situations where you are interested in upping your burst AoE potential this is still strong.
With the stat amp corruptions mentioned above you can buy them at any rank, but you will get more bang for your buck per Echoes spent by going for Rank 3. Note that the flexible choices will usually be strong at all times, while the niche are for very specific situations so should only be taken if you are only engaging in that content/encounter type.
Best Enhancement Shaman Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

Passive Effects:
Enhancement Shaman will almost always prioritise Haste rating % gains via
, though your mileage may vary. When it comes to all 4 secondary stat gains (including
,
and
), it will depend on what gear you have available and how much Corruption you have to invest in it. Your stat weights may be shifted if you equip enough of different boosting effects, so it is
HIGHLY recommended
that you use Raidbots to simulate your characters top gear to judge how well these pieces will fit.
is also a valid catch all option that provides a solid boost, but is very unlikely to outdo
with a good gearset.
Proc Effects:
These often come with a higher Corruption cost, but have unique procs that are tailored to different situations.
Best Effects:
- Considering the most recent 35% nerf this has dropped in value, but is still a strong DPS per corruption effect assuming a good item level, dealing good damage with strong Haste scaling, and due to the proc rate can also trigger on extra targets in AoE getting extra value on the DoT.
- Very strong damage per corruption in pure single target situations, but does have some issues with extra targets soaking up stars and preventing the debuff stacking.
- Only available from the raid weapon
, this provides an extremely good boost that only gets better in AoE, so is a great choice to have available.
Average Effects:
- Currently the best secondary proc available overall, and only gets better if combined with Haste % increase passives.
- If you're taking damage often enough to trigger this, then is a reasonable option, and roughly on par with Haste.
- Not as good as Haste, but a solid option if it shows up.
- Deals good purely single target damage, and has good DPS per corruption ratios too.
- Does reasonable DPS per corruption and isn't item level dependant alongside being versatile in different situations, but recent nerfs have pushed this much further down.
- Recent buffs have brought this up to a reasonable level, and is useful - slightly aided by the very small bump in value with up to 3 other members using it.
- Does decent damage, but a high investment for lower returns than alternatives for purely single target situations.
- This is definitely the weakest of the 4 stat procs, but you may find uses for this if you are either lacking in Critical Strike or have amps on your gear.
Bad Effects:
- Our cooldowns have a habit of desyncing and due to our main damage source having a reset mechanic, this is very weak.
- Much like Ineffable Truth, this has little to no value due to us having resets or zero cooldown abilities in our kit, avoid.
Data from Bloodmallet. Click here to learn more about it.
Passive Effects:
Much like in single target Enhancement Shaman heavily prioritise Haste rating % gains via
, though Critical Strike with
and Mastery with
are closer in AoE than in single target. It will still heavily depend on what gear you have available and equipped, and how much Corruption you are willing to invest to amplify the currently equipped stats. Stat weights will be shifted even heavier in AoE depending on what gearset you choose to use, so it is
HIGHLY recommended
that you use Raidbots to simulate your characters top gear to judge how well these pieces will fit.
also still provides a valid catch all option that gives a solid boost, will not outdo
with a good gearset.
Proc Effects:
Best Effects:
- Only available from the raid weapon
, this provides an extremely good single target damage boost. This effect also hits all targets in a small cone AoE in front of you, making it scale up linearly with extra targets, making it one of our strongest AoE picks.
- This is incredibly Corruption efficient for burst AoE when it triggers, and while it cannot be predicted when it triggers the impact is huge, so is often worth it on AoE encounters.
Average Effects:
- The 35% nerf has hit this due to the trigger rate being less reliable, and damage is no longer propping it up. It's still a reasonable choice especially at lower target numbers, but has a value limit now.
- The best AoE secondary proc due to it providing bursts of extra
scaling damage.
- If you're taking damage often enough to trigger this, then is a reasonable option, but worse than Mastery in most cases.
- Not as good as Mastery in AoE, but still respectable.
- Falls off in AoE due to the stars being wasted in some cases, but still provides decent damage-to-Corruption ratios if this is your only option.
- Recent nerfs have pushed this down, but due to the meteor effect it is still relevant as a cleave/AoE option. Not nearly as Corruption efficient as it once was however.
- Recent buffs have brought this up to a reasonable level, and is useful - slightly aided by the very small bump in value with up to 3 other members using it.
- Deals good purely single target damage, but in AoE doesn't really gain anything, dropping its value down with extra targets available.
- This is definitely the weakest of the 4 stat procs, but you may find uses for this if you are either lacking in Critical Strike or have amps on your gear.
Bad Effects:
- Our cooldowns have a habit of desyncing and while AoE makes this slightly less useless, is still not recommended.
- Similar to Ineffable Truth, this does gain some slight value in AoE largely due to extra Crash Lightning casts, but is still not recommended.
Enhancement Shaman Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As an Enhancement Shaman, there is only one obtainable item that comes with a unique effect within the raid:
- always comes with
, currently extremely powerful in all scenarios solely due to the flat damage it provides over the course of a fight while also being very efficient, only costing 25 Corruption. This effect deals full AoE damage in a small cone in front of you, so scales linearly with extra targets.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption

At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- Enhancement can use
to either instantly remove the effect after it triggers, or use
to suppress the slow until you are safe if it triggers at a bad time, making this a relatively easy effect to deal with.
- More of a hindrance due to having to commit movement tools to get out of them, though
can be useful to heal through the damage if it catches us at a bad time. Ideally you should be positioning yourself so this doesn't spawn in a place that locks off the entire melee range of the boss, meaning using a triangular position at left foot, right foot, and front if needed to always be able to avoid the circle. If you find the circle is too big for your Corruption level to do that, then remove some pieces to reduce the size, or avoid the effect entirely.
- The add spawned by this will disappear if stunned, therefore using
quickly when you notice it spawning can remove it from being an issue before it even starts moving. This can, in very edge cases, also be used to trigger
on single target fights but is very dangerous due to how much damage the add will do if you mis-time it, so is not advised early on in the patch.
- Letting your Corruption get this high means that it is mandatory to stun the add with
immediately, and also have
to keep it at a distance failing that. This is pushing your Corruption level to the limit and shouldn't be done if you aren't 100% comfortable with an encounter and this mechanic.
- This is the point where you should definitely consider removing Corruption, as the negative effects of this debuff are far too dangerous to consider wearing in any realistic scenario currently.
How Much Corruption Should an Enhancement Shaman Take?
Currently the upper limit is expected to be 59, as while we have tools to deal with the Thing from Beyond, it's too much of a risk to have all of the effects trigger if a mistake is made. Generally, advice especially early on in the patch would be to play it safe and look toward the 39 mark to avoid having to deal with the add entirely. Also keep in mind that while Corruption is valuable for DPS, if it ever gets to the point where it is causing issues for your survival or ability to deal with certain mechanics, removing it entirely until you are more comfortable with an encounter is almost always the best play.
