The Cypher of the First Ones is a progression system in Patch 9.2, Eternity's End. In this guide, we explain everything that there is to know about this new system, including reasons to research Cypher of the First Ones, perks, rewards and research traits.
Recommended Cypher Research Priority
As of the latest iteration on the PTR and 3 days before Patch 9.2 hits the live servers, only the "Understanding" Cyphers have a long research time. Once each "Understanding" Cypher is fully researched at least once, an account-wide flag will trigger, making that Understanding research have shortened times for alts as well.
It is also important to know you can research more than one research at a time - You are able to research one trait of each column at a time, for a total of four traits researched at a time (but you do need to research the first trait of each column to be able to research the other traits of that column, as well as advance to the next one).
Because of this, there isn't much of a recommended research priority - As long as you research the main Understanding Cyphers, you are free to unlock the rest of the system, blocked only by quantity of
. We recommend the following order:
>
>
>
If you're interested in more Enlightened Reputation, unlock
after Metrial Understanding for the third World Quest and
after Aealic Understanding for the third Daily Quest;
If you're interested in mount farming, unlock
after Dealic Understanding.
Below, we have a very handy image with all research times and costs. Thanks
Lazey
for making this!
What is the Cypher of the First Ones?
The Cypher of the First Ones is a new progression system being added in Patch 9.2, Eternity's End. The Cypher of the First Ones serves as background lore for the Zereth Mortis zones. In this new system, you will invest
, a new currency in Patch 9.2, on research that will grant you several enhancements for your outdoor experience in Zereth Mortis and Shadowlands.
Why Should I Engage with the Cypher of the First Ones Systems?
The Cypher of the First Ones system is built to improve on player experience within Zereth Mortis (and with some researches, other outdoor Shadowlands zones as well).
This system grants ALMOST NO player power
for instanced content like raids, dungeons or battlegrounds, so if you have no interest in doing many outdoor activities in Zereth Mortis or in the Shadowlands in general, you will be able to almost entirely skip this system.
The exception to this rule is Cypher Equipment item level, which is increased as you progress through the system.
Here is a resumed list of benefits you will receive for engaging with the Cypher of the First Ones system:
More Daily and World Quests in Zereth Mortis, slightly increasing the speed you farm Enlightened reputation with;
Improvements to your Pocopoc unit like faster energy regeneration and higher maximum Energy limits, a dedicated DPS/Healer setup for Pocopoc, or even using Pocopoc to control wildlife to help you in combat;
Temporary Enhancements that work in both Zereth Mortis and Shadowlands outdoor zones, with eventually getting an option to socket them on special gear permanently;
A crafting system to craft Zereth Mortis-themed Battle Pets and Mounts by using Zereth Mortis reagents;
Equipment item level increases in Zereth Mortis also come from interacting with the Cypher of the First Ones system - The higher is your Cypher equipment, the higher the ilvl of pieces from Zereth Mortis.
Unlocking the Cyphers of the First Ones System
The Cypher of the First Ones system is unlocked during the Patch 9.2 Campaign questline, specifically at the end of Chapter 3,
. The quest
introduces you to the Cypher system by teaching you the very first research,
, as well as granting you 120
to kickstart your research into the system.
Characters that skip the introduction quests to Zereth Mortis will have the Cypher system unlocked by default, but they will miss out on the 120 Cyphers used to kickstart the system.
Cypher Console Panel
Once you unlock the Cypher of the First Ones system, the cypher console can be located at the cavern in Exile's Hollow. You will need to go there every time you want to start another research. The macro below can be used to see your Cypher Console anywhere,
but be mindful that this script command can change other UIs with the Cypher Console.
/run C_Garrison.GetCurrentGarrTalentTreeID=(function() return 474 end)
/run OrderHall_LoadUI() OrderHallTalentFrame:SetGarrisonType(111, 474);
/run ToggleOrderHallTalentUI();
You will need to research the main research in each column (Metrial, Aealic, Dealic and Trebalim Understanding) to be able to start researching the bottom rows, as well as unlocking the main research in the next row.
Farming Cyphers of the First Ones
is the currency used to fuel the Cypher of the First Ones Console and start researches. You can obtain
by doing several activities in Zereth Mortis:
10-15
for completing Daily Quests in Zereth Mortis;
62-70
from
, reward from the
bi-weekly quest;
80
from the Zereth Mortis world boss world quest
;
2-4
from rares and treasure chests.
2-4
from Caches of Creation and interacting with Echoed Jiro, explained further in the guide.
Get 50% More Cyphers With
Once you delve a bit deep into the Cypher system, you can significantly increase your Cypher gains with
. This item will increase Cypher gains by 50%.
Purchasing this item requires 150
and can be purchased from
in Exile's Hollow. Unlocking this vendor NPC requires unlocking the
Cypher research and completing the questline
, which starts with the quest
. Once the questline is complete, the Olea Jiro will move to the outskirts of Exile's Hollow, and you'll be able to purchase the item from them.
Caches of Creation Puzzles
Caches of Creation are puzzles scattered across Zereth Mortis. Once you unlock the
research, these puzzles will become scattered across Zereth Mortis. One puzzle will always be marked on the map with a daily quest attached to it, while other puzzles need to be manually found. Pocopoc can help track Caches of Creation, pointing them on the minimap as you approach one.
Completing a Cache of Creation puzzle will award you with between 2-4
. Once you approach a Cache of Creation, Pocopoc grants you two options:
You can either use 2 Pocopoc Energy to attempt to solve the puzzle yourself (the Energy will be spent once the puzzle is completed);
Or you can use 9 Pocopoc Energy to have Pocopoc solve the puzzle for you, granting the rewards instantly.
Below we have some locations for the Caches of Creation scattered in Zereth Mortis. Be mindful that not all these locations will contain a puzzle every day.

There are five types of puzzles in Zereth Mortis. Below, we have a quick explanation on each puzzle:
In the Cantaric Protolock, you have a total of 100 squares and 20 runes, 10 in each row and 10 in each column. Clicking one of the side runes will turn on or off all squares adjacent to the rune's line or column. The objective of this Protolock is to turn off all the squares. This is the only Protolock with a limited number of moves available - You need to finish the puzzle within 7 moves.
In the Mezzonic Protolock, you have a total of 25 squares. Clicking one square will turn on or off that square, as well as all squares around it (up, down and side squares). The objective of this Protolock is to turn off all the squares in the puzzle.
The Fugueal Protolock looks like the hardest of the Zereth Mortis puzzles on a first glance, but it is quite easy to solve once you know what to do. There are nine runes on the panel, each rune with four different characteristics:
Core shape;
Number of core shapes;
Border shape;
Number of border shapes.
You need to pair the runes on this puzzle in groups of three - Each group needs to either have a characteristic that matches between all 3 of them, or have no matches at all between their four characteristics.
The Glissandian Protolock is a return of the Bejeweled puzzle from Nazjatar! Currently on the PTR UI there is no display of what runes you need to match, but considering the similarity to the Nazjatar puzzle, you will need to match a number of glyphs of the same color.
The Toccatian Protolock is another Nazjatar puzzle return, this time the untangle puzzle - To solve this puzzle, you need to click the circles around to move the lines connecting them, and the puzzle is completed when no lines are touching.
Echoed Jiros
You're able to gain additional
on your first interaction of the day with Echoed Jiros. You can interact with 3 kinds of Echoed Jiros, and the first interaction with one Jiro of each kind will grant you 2-4
.
These Jiros can be found scattered around Zereth Mortis, and requires researching at least one rank of the
research to interact with them. You will gain access to Echoed Jiro in different areas of Zereth Mortis depending on which rank of Creatian you have researched. You can find all 3 Jiro types with Creatian Rank 1:
Rank 1: Southwestern Zereth Mortis
Rank 2: Southeastern Zereth Mortis
Rank 3: Northwestern Zereth Mortis
Rank 4: Northeastern Zereth Mortis
You can also research the

Pocopoc: A Friend in Zereth Mortis
One of the main features of Zereth Mortis is Pocopoc, an automa that will accompany you through your journey in the zone.
Pocopoc is unlocked at the end of Chapter 3 of the 9.2 Campaign, with the quest
. Once this quest is completed and you've started researching the Cypher of the First Ones system, you will receive the spell
, which allows you to summon Pocopoc to your side in Zereth Mortis.
Pocopoc has a resource called
Pocopoc Energy
, which is visible any time by targetting your unit. Pocopoc starts at 10 maximum Energy and regenerates 1 Energy every 6 minutes, but several Cypher researches make Pocopoc regenerate Energy faster or increase its maximum Energy. Pocopoc uses Energy for several tasks:
Once
is researched, Pocopoc uses Energy to interact with Caches of Creation - 2 Energy to allow you to solve the puzzle, or 9 Energy to overload the cache, solving the puzzle for you.
Once
is researched, Pocopoc can use 6 Energy to generate a random temporary enhancement at Enhancement Consoles in Haven, Exile's Hollow and Pilgrim's Grace.
Once
is researched, Pocopoc can use 1 Energy to control Coreless creatures in Zereth Mortis. While it controls a Coreless creature, it can use 2 Energy to cast a special ability.
Once
is researched, Pocopoc can use 2 Energy on different abilities, depending on whether he's on Aggressive or Supportive mode.
Once
is researched, Pocopoc can use 5 Energy to controll Coreless Guardians. These automa allows you and two party members to wreak havoc around the zone.
While out, you can talk to Pocopoc for several options:
<Encourage Pocopoc to look out for noteworthy objects>.
- This option activates the
buff. Pocopoc starts looking for objects of interest, and will point them out to you once you approach one. Pocopoc can look for the following interesting things, depending on how far you're into the Cypher research:
Lore Concordances;
Caches of Creation, once
is researched;
Echoed Jiros, once
is researched;
Coreless Automa, Elusive Mining/Herb nodes and Forgotten Treasure Vaults once
is researched.
View more advanced options.
- Once
is research, Pocopoc will gain this option, allowing you to change between his Aggressive or Supportive coroutine;
View costume options.
- After you unlock a costume for Pocopoc, this option appears, allowing you to equip Pocopoc with that costume. Costumes last for 1 hour or until he's dismissed, and can be changed at any time.
In addition to this, Pocopoc can help you in combat - On his normal and supportive coroutines, Pocopoc attacks enemies from a distance with
, while he will engage in melee combat while on his aggressive coroutine. Pocopoc is even able to take threat out of you, given it deals enough damage. If Pocopoc takes enough damage, it will retreat to you and go into
mode, "resting" for one minute while regaining health.
Cypher Equipment Level - Zereth Mortis Item Level Increases
In Zereth Mortis, gear pieces obtained from Daily and World Quests can receive item level increases with the Cypher of the First Ones system. On the top left window UI of the Cypher Console, you can see what level is your equipment at, and a mouseover the option will show how many Cyphers you need to invest into researches to earn the next level of Cypher Equipment.
Having a higher Cypher Equipment level also increases the effectiveness of pieces with specific Zereth Mortis effects, like having a higher level will make pieces with the
effect have a longer range on the teleport, effect, etc.

Cypher of the First Ones Researches
There are a grand total of 22 research talents you can complete with the Cypher of the First Ones system, with a grand total of 43 ranks.
There are four columns of research, each type serving a different purpose. Only limitation to researching is that you need to research the first talent of each column to advance into the next research column, and to research other talents down that column.
All research is done within the Cypher Console located in Exile's Hollow.
Metrial Tree
The Metrial Tree upgrades the most basic systems for Pocopoc - Allowing you to solve Caches of Creation, find and interact with Echoed Jiros, and customize the appearance of your Pocopoc unit.

Activates Pocopoc, and grants access to Lore Concordances in Zereth Mortis. Pocopoc generates 1 Energy every 6 minutes, up to a maximum of 10. Activating a Lore Concordance will grant a beneficial combat effect to all players within 50 yds for 10 min if you have full understanding of the Concordance.
This is the first research you will learn on the Cyphers of the First Ones system. This research grants access to
, which can be used to Summon Pocopoc in Zereth Mortis. Pocopoc, after learning certain traits, can be used to interact with several things in Zereth Mortis, at the cost of Pocopoc Energy. Pocopoc initially starts with 10 Pocopoc Energy, gaining 1 Energy every 6 minutes. Later traits allow you to gain Pocopoc Energy faster, as well as increasing Pocopoc's maximum Energy.
This trait also grants Pocopoc access to Concordances in Zereth Mortis. Concordances are interactable objects scattered through all of Zereth Mortis, coded in the Cypher of the First Ones alphabet. As you progress through the Cypher system, you will be able to fully decode Concordances, gaining buffs to yourself and nearby players when interacting with one.

Additional ranks of Bassalim increase the time your Resonant Automa stays active, and reduces the shared ability cooldown:
: Rushes forward 25 yards and deals damage to 3 targets on impact.

thank you for this guide Neryssa! it couldnt have come at a better time, considering that we'll all be in ZM soon, just under 72 hrs at this point, give or take depending on how long maintenance is up and how quick we can log in.
it would seem that the sooner we can unlock that 50% research buff, the better off we'll be.

The Fugueal Protolock looks like the hardest of the Zereth Mortis puzzles on a first glance, but it is quite easy to solve once you know what to do. There are nine runes on the panel, each rune with four different characteristics:
Core shape;
Number of core shapes;
Border shape;
Number of border shapes.
You need to pair the runes on this puzzle in groups of three - Each group needs to either have a characteristic that matches between all 3 of them, or have no matches at all between their four characteristics.
This information is incorrect - the one I found does not follow the rules you laid out here.

So at the end of Chapter 3 - Cyphers of the First Ones quest we get to choose from 3 pieces of gear with Pocopoc abilities (cloth shoulders for me). When I look up the quest on wowhead it doesn't show the armor and when I look up the armor it doesn't show the abilities (emphatic oracular mantle, broker's oracular mantle, synchronous oracular mantle.)
They have abilities that sound like they may grant Pocopoc abilities before they are even researched? Or maybe they are useless UNTIL you research them? For instance, the Emphatic one "Grants Pocopoc the ability to take over creatures without consuming energy."
Anyway, surprised there is no guidance on this choice with all the other info floating about. Any thoughts on which to pick?

Is there any clarification on Alt progress?
Because I started the Aealic main upgrade on my Main char and now can't start it on my Alt while it is upgrading...
I get the Message "This Cypher talent is already being researched by another Character on your Account."
So is it account wide unlocks or will Alts have it easier once the main has researched everything?
评论来自
Certified
are the cypher talents account wide? if not, why do i have to wait for my main to finish the research before my alt can start researching the talent? if this is intended and the cypher isn't account wide, terrible game design.

- I just finished "Aealic understanding" research with my main. It took like 1 day .
- My cypher got an account-wide flag.
- Logged to my alt, I had to start the investigation again but it only took 1 second to complete.

Does cypher equipment include weapons, shields, off-hand, trinkets, rings and necklaces ? or just armor?

Isn't your equipped Cypher equipment supposed to automatically increase in ilvl once you reach the threshold?

UPDATE
- The iLvL increase
only applies to newly looted items
, which you find all over ZM. This has now been tested to a point of absolute certainty.
REMINDER
- Cypher equipment caps at iLvL 252, and the weapons frequently dropped by the desert sinkhole bosses in ZM are iLvL 246.
Crafting can also produce unique-equipped iLvL 262 pieces with ZM optional reagents - like a
glitter-fart stat cloud
which is great... but hard as hell to see on sand or in a cosmic particle effect maelstrom and has a tiny hitbox.
While there's still a lot of valuable stuff to find in the new raid, this serves as an excellent stat floor for engaging with that content.
---------------
I haven't seen my Cypher Equipment level increase despite my rank going up to 3/6.
My guess is that the research paid for with this currency has to complete before it counts toward the behind the scenes mechanics of the system - despite the immediate rank increase stated on the UI. The counters used by the display and the mechanics behind them might not be properly linked.
Or it's a bug, whatever. Should be able to confirm/deny soon enough.

Concordances are part of what confuses me, but I just spotted the part of the tooltip explaining the increase to understanding them. Seems odd Aelic doesn't improve it too, but whatever. Currently I don't understand why I was forced to learn those three new mini-games after Cachial Understanding, because I haven't seen them in the field. Maybe I just haven't found any Caches of Creation?

Can only research one at a time per account. Don't accidently get timegated because your alt just happened to choose a 5 day research Cypher Talent.
"This Cypher talent is already being researched by another character on your account."

I'm sure there's a ton of great info here but it's very hard to read. Please break it up even further with tabs for each category. I came here looking to find out what I need do with this codex I got from the dispenser. If that info is here, it's buried so deep I can't find it.

How do you start the first box? I have 18 Cyphers. The first core System says it needs 5. Clicking the box only makes the tooltip pop up?

This questline eventually unlocks the second forge for the Protoform Synthesis system
what do you mean by "eventually"?

It's not exactly true to say that this system doesn't grant player power. If it allows you to upgrade the ilevel of items you receive in the zone, then it's increasing power and it's a 'borrowed' system similar to feeing azerite or anima to some repository.
Still looking for the section in this guide that outlines which 'understandings' you need to research to improve the ilevel of drops.

So I am down to needing 2 last discoveries to get to 6/6 and I needed to "spend" 190 to get there. I researched Maxlim lvl 2 which cost 120 but now I still need to "spend" 75... wait-a-minute. Is there like a surcharge or something?

I developed a macro that shows the research console from anywhere in the game WITHOUT hurting any other part of the game that uses the same garrison talent UI (Pocopoc Customization, Torghast Box of Many Things, MOTHER Vision upgrades, and BfA mission ship enhancements are the ones I'm aware of). The macro is 253 characters long, which becomes 254 later because Blizzard adds a return to saved and loaded macros.
/run OrderHall_LoadUI()local c,g,f=C_Garrison,"GetCurrentGarrTalentTreeID",OrderHallTalentFrame c.o=c.o or c c=function()return f.garrisonType==111 and f.garrTalentTreeID==474 and 474 or c.o()end f:SetGarrisonType(111,474)ToggleOrderHallTalentUI()
When clicking on the cypher console npc, the event GARRISON_TALENT_NPC_OPENED is fired with 111 and 474 as the two arguments. UIParent then feeds these into the OrderHallTalentFrame keys "garrisonType" and "garrTalentTreeID" respectively in preparation to open it, but instead of the UI checking the frame's garrTalentTreeID key, it queries C_Garrison.GetCurrentGarrTalentTreeID() because why not, causing the frame to break if you tried to show it without the NPC.
In my macro, I force the function to check garrisonType==111 and garrTalentTreeID==474 to show the cypher research, because those keys will be there before the function is queried. By placing a copy of the original C_Garrison.GetCurrentGarrTalentTreeID() function into C_Garrison.o, I can return the old function as the rest of the UI/game expects if those keys aren't 111 and 474.
As a side note, in true Blizzard spaghetti code fashion, the first time you run this macro since the last time your UI loaded, you get a chat warning that says
Unknown macro option: g
for some insane reason. Ignore it.

Any guidance on the Cypher items with sockets? I've only gotten all the gloves and a helmet with only the helmet having a socket. Just wondering if any of the other gear slots have sockets. it is pretty helpful with more powerful mobs to make those 15 minute upgrades permanent.

I didn't see this posted anywhere yet. As of patch 9.2.5, you have the ability to obtain weapons in ZM (ilvl based on your console). To open this up, you have to unlock the Jiro guys doing quests for each of them in the NW corner (if you haven't done this already). Once they appear in the Faith's Repose camp, farm mobs for
Resonating Disc
which will give you the quest
Sounds of Healing
to turn in to Olea Manu at the camp.

Has anyone seen Cypher Equipment with Spheriod slots drop lately? I've gotten MULTIP)LE Cypher Equipment drops but since 9.2.3 or 9.2.4 none of them have had the Slot.
