In this guide, we will explain the
Covenant Callings system
, which takes the place of Emissaries in the Shadowlands expansion.
What are Covenant Callings in Shadowlands?
Covenant Callings are a new type of daily quest with goals and rewards specific to your character's Covenant alignment. They are similar to World Quests, but there are key differences as well. Covenant Callings are offered in addition to the two Weekly quests you pick up at your Covenant Sanctum that offer Renown.
You may notice that you are offered fewer World Quests in Shadowlands than you would find in either Legion or Battle for Azeroth. Both of the prior expansions generally offered 7-9 World Quests per zone, more if the zone was hosting a local invasion. In Shadowlands, zones typically offer only 4-5 World Quests. Covenant Callings pick up a little of this difference.
Since all players in Shadowlands will be divided among the four Covenants, there were two choices Blizzard needed to make for handling World Quests in Shadowlands regarding rewards. The first option was to make World Quest rewards change dynamically based on the player's Covenant, much like how they already change based on the character's class. The second and simpler option was to offer a set of World Quests that were Covenant-specific and offered Covenant-specific rewards -- which is how Covenant Callings were born.
Similarities between Covenant Callings and World Quests
Both have time limits and reset on the daily quest cycle.
Both offer valuable rewards that you will want to track regularly.
Both types offer the same quests to everyone at the same time, regardless of Covenant.
There is a list of known Covenant Callings later in this guide. Some of them will vary in quest name, but the goal is the same. For example, a Kyrian may receive the Covenant Calling
家园的麻烦
and the other Covenants will see
晋升堡垒的召唤
, but they are otherwise the same quest: defend Bastion by completing Daily Quests and World Quests, looting treasures, and slaying rare creatures.
Differences between Covenant Callings and World Quests
Covenant Callings last 3 days. A new Calling is presented each day on the daily server reset.
World Quests are picked up by going into the quest area and picking up the quest automatically. Callings are picked up by visiting quest givers in your Covenant Sanctum.
World Quest rewards, goals, and expiration times are tracked on the world map. Callings' rewards, goals, and expiration times are tracked in your Covenant Sanctum tracker on your minimap.
When you complete a World Quest, it automatically turns in and gives the reward. Callings must be returned to the quest giver in your Sanctum to receive your reward.
World Quests give rewards any player can use, regardless of Covenant. Callings can offer covenant-specific rewards.
World Quests show up in the category "World Quests" in your Quest log. Callings show up in the regular "Quests" section.
Acquiring Covenant Callings in Shadowlands
Once you have joined your Covenant and have completed the quests necessary to open it, you will begin receiving notifications about available Callings.
New Covenant Callings are acquired from quest NPCs inside your Covenant Sanctum. You can see what Covenant Callings are available, which you have in your quest log, and if you are still waiting for new Covenant Callings to appear. Select your Covenant Sanctum report in the lower left corner of your minimap to see what choices are available without having to return to your Sanctum. The Sanctum report can be found by clicking your Sanctum's symbol on your minimap.
Inside your Sanctum, Covenant Callings appear as daily quests with a , as you can see in the Sinfall minimap above.
If you have a new Covenant Calling available, the Covenant Sanctum report icon will glow and you'll briefly receive a notification that a new Calling is available. The notification will go away, but the icon will continue to pulse to remind you to check your Sanctum.
Opening your Sanctum Report, you will see three icons representing the three quest givers of your Covenant that hand out Covenant Callings.
An icon surrounded by a blue circle with a indicates that there is a Covenant Calling active, but you have not yet picked it up from the quest giver.
An icon with no highlight represents a Covenant Calling you have picked up and is in your quest log.
An empty circle shows when you have completed a Calling, but no new Calling is available to pick up yet.
The nice part about this display is that you can check what quests are available from anywhere. You don't have to return to your Sanctum to see what is available. When you mouse over a quest giver, whether you have the quest or not, you will see a full description of the quest that is available, including its duration and reward.
Like World Quests, Covenant Callings have a set duration. After they have expired, the quest giver will offer a new Covenant Calling.
Once you pick up a Covenant Calling, you can't abandon it. The only way to remove it from your quest log is to complete the Calling or let it expire. This only becomes an issue if your quest log is already nearly full and you're concerned about space.
Each Covenant has specific NPCs that give Covenant Callings. You will see them as a blue on your minimap. This may require a little running around to see them on a spread-out Sanctum such as Elysian Hold.
Covenant Calling Quests in Shadowlands
All characters, no matter which Covenant they belong to, have access to the same Covenant Callings from day to day. This is another way in which they are similar to World Quests. For the quests such as
炽蓝仙野的召唤
, the
家园的麻烦
quest will replace it for the native Covenant.
The following quests correspond to the pool of possible Callings. Each Covenant has its own version (only one is shown here for brevity, as the goals and reward chest types are the same.
Trainee Quests:
Quests with your Trainee can yield special rewards as you work on those quests! See below to the section about the

Covenant Calling Rewards in Shadowlands
Callings reward one of two types of Tribute Chests. The Covenant flavor of chest depends first by the Covenant you're helping, and second by the Covenant to which you belong. For example, a Covenant Calling helping Maldraxxus will always reward
野心礼物
or
义缚礼物
, but a Calling that doesn't specify a covenant such as
心能回收
will reward a chest corresponding to your member Covenant.
Kyrian -
晋升者的礼物
,
圣杰的礼物
Necrolords -
野心礼物
,
义缚礼物
Night Fae -
林地守卫者的奖赏
,

Venthyr -

Blue Tribute chests contain random items which can include high-price vendor greys, scaling blue-quality gear items, Conduits, and varying amounts of Anima to deposit into your Sanctum reserve, such as
血缚之球
.
Purple Tribute chests also contain high-price vendor greys, higher-level scaling gear items, Conduits, and larger Anima items to deposit into your reserve, such as
征收的奉纳
. They may also drop items related to your Sanctum's special area, such as the Path of Ascension, Abomination Factory, Queen's Conservatory, or Court of Embers.
野心礼物
and
义缚礼物
, awarded for completing Callings for Maldraxxus, can contain a
通灵鳐之卵
. In three days, this turns into
渗出粘液的通灵鳐之卵
, which can yield one of three mounts:
浑圆通灵鳐
,
群居通灵鳐
, or
群居通灵鳐
. You don't have to be a member of the Necrolord Covenant to loot or ride these!
Trainee Covenant Callings: Dirty Glinting Object
Some Covenant Callings involve you taking out your "trainee" to accompany you on your mission. These are the "Training in " or "Training Our Forces" callings. Every five minutes when you kill something, once you are out of combat, there will appear a sparkling object under your trainee's feet. This is a
脏兮兮的闪光物
(curiously classified as an NPC instead of an item) that you can loot, and gives you several possible outcomes, including a Battle Pet. It looks like this:
Only one trainee per Covenant is known to give these items, and it will say something special when it produces a
脏兮兮的闪光物
:
迪奥斯
for Kyrian - "I see something on the ground, here. Come, take a look!"
德雷格斯
for Necrolord - "Dug up some parts! Look!
亮翼
for Night Fae - "I think I see something on the ground, over here!"
阿滴
for Venthyr - "Dredged up somethin' interesting over here, boss."
Since your trainee will continue to accompany you on your missions in the designated zone until you turn the Calling in, it pays not to turn in this Calling until it's about to expire to give you the maximum chances to pick up items.

Covenant Callings as Renown Catchup Mechanic
If any character you have is behind on weekly Renown, from behind behind the curve, switching Covenants, or because they're alts, you will be able to use Covenant Callings as a way to catch up on Renown. Renown is currently gated by week (see the guide below), so you can end up quite a bit behind depending on when you start.
If you are behind on Renown, completing Covenant Callings are a great way for your alts to get caught up with your other characters. Normally, Renown is rewarded three ways: completing Covenant Campaign chapters, doing your weekly quest to rescue souls in the Maw, and turning in 1,000 Anima to your sanctum. But if you're behind the curve, Callings will also reward Renown!

they are random and trash, ive done them on a few characters first week and it just gives vendor stuff and green anima items not even blue.
no gear whatsoever

If you get only grey items don’t despair as they are likely worth a lot of gold. This seems to replace the gold from emissary quests from BFA

Would love it if these could give guaranteed Anima. The randomness of these chests has been incredibly annoying. Currently I have not received any Anima at all from doing these each day. The things I have gotten I’m not upset about, I’ve made like 20k gold alone at least from them, but I would love to get some Anima at least, either a little or a lot don’t care just some

Do covenant callings only ever reward you with your covenant specific reputation? If I'm Venthyr will I only ever get Venthyr rep from callings?

Has anyone actually gotten gear drops from these? Or, really, anything but trash?
I saw one piece of gear back in the first week of the xpac; since then it's been nothing but trash. Not even anima.
Seems like a serious downgrade from the Emissary caches of Legion and BfA.

Am I alone in being rather irked that these are quests one has to pick up and not just...active always, like Emissaries were?
At least make them startable from the adventurer's journal, Blizz...

I still don't get it. This guide says quests without the blue ! mark are in my quest log, but they aren't. I have to help Ardenweald but when I do WQ there, nothing seems to change in the covenant calling screen. I thought maybe I have to return to my base to acquire the quest so I did that but there's no more quests available there. I really have no idea if doing WQ is contributing to the covenant quest or not, because I don't want to do them all only to find out it doesn't help and I wasted a day. Would love some help with what is supposed to happen with these.

I am completely missing something here....could someone please explain? I have 5 level 60 toons...at least one with each covenant (two are with Venthyr). I have done the daily callings on each toon every single day this week with the exception of the one just given today (it is now Sunday). Somehow, my quest log on EVERY TOON says that I have only completed 2/3 Callings. How is this possible? I have completed callings on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday...but it has been stuck on 2/3 on all of my toons since Thursday. What do you have to do to actually complete this? Is this bugged? Am I missing something here? Also, I should point out that not all of my toons are maxed on their Renown levels. I have 2 at 18, 1 at 14, and 2 at 13. If this is somehow tied to granting Renown for completion, why wouldn't this at least be completing for my lower level Renown toons? I would really appreciate it if someone could explain how this is supposed to work.
Thank you so much.

My lvl 60 character in the Kyrian Covenant has no daily callings or campaign quests. I just reached level 60 and did an entry quest to complete 3 world quests in Bastion yesterday, now nothing shows up to allow me to increase renown or do anything covenant related. Am I missing a step or something important that must be completed? My other Night Fae characters were immediately sent to the Maw and also provided daily callings that granted renown. I'm stuck and can't seem to get support from WOW. Advice?

Before I loose my ever loving mind, would be nice to know what quests I need to do unlock Callings. This being a guide for Covenant Callings, I hoped this would tell me. But no, just gloss over it with a "Once you have joined your Covenant and have completed the quests necessary to open it, you will begin receiving notifications about available Callings." I think the exact quests are kind of important, I don't want to guess and spend time doing any quest given to unlock them.
