Welcome to Wowhead's Classic Ore farming guide, covering everything about the best places to farm ore in Classic WoW including Thorium Ore and Mithril Ore. The guide will also detail notable byproducts of all mineral veins such as Arcane Crystals from Thorium Veins.
What is Mining?
采矿
is a Profession that allows you to extract metal deposits and veins for ore. You can choose this as one of two primary professions. It's commonly paired with
锻造
and
工程学
, but it's also a popular gathering profession to choose for making gold. For more information on how to acquire Mining skill, see Ragorism's excellent guide,
Classic WoW Mining 1-300 Profession Guide
.
One downside of mining is that it's very hard on bag space, which can be an issue early in your character's career. There are two reasons why this happens.
First, it requires you to purchase a
矿工锄
for and carry it in your bags at all times, taking up a valuable bag slot. Basic mining picks are available from many Trade Goods, Blacksmithing, and Engineering vendors. (Important: there are several items you will see that also "function as a mining pick", but this item property change did not occur until Burning Crusade).
Second, ore isn't the only thing you get from mining nodes, so you'll find bag space filling up fast. Make sure to invest early income on bags. Although you can purchase a basic 6-slot
棕色小袋
for from several vendors, it's worth finding a tailor who might be willing to make you some bags in exchange for the materials to make them or checking the Auction House for
亚麻包
. These usually sell for well under .
Unlike Herbalism, Mining is not improved by any Classic racial abilities. There are three things (one item and two enchants) to enhance skill:
地精采矿头盔

General Info about Ore
Ore nodes are found in nearly every zone, except one: Teldrassil. Although there are some rock-like formations, Teldrassil is a giant tree, so it makes sense if you think about it.
Each mining node has a level range when you can start mining, when you get skill points, and when you have mastered this ore and no longer get skill.
Mines are found primarily in mountainous areas, so zone edges are the most common places for mines to appear. They can appear in the open, but nearly always close to rocks or crevices. Some nodes are underwater and inside cave systems -- sometimes inside dungeons.
Mining a node yields three basic classes of items:
Ore - always
Stone - sometimes
Gems - sometimes; more rarely than stone
General Info on Smelting
Smelting is the process of turning ore into useful bars. This is done at a stationary forge. You can also get skill points in Mining from Smelting.
If you are mining for the purposes of gold making, follow these two rules:
Do NOT smelt only for the purpose of raising skill.
Smelt
only
if bars are selling for more than raw ore.
Logic might tell you that players would be more interested in buying finished bars than raw ore, as this makes them readily useful for Blacksmithing and Engineering. However, there are two facts that you need to understand to know why turning your ore into bars is a money-losing proposition in most cases:
Since you can skill Mining from Smelting, wealthier characters, especially those running up alts, will purchase raw ore to advance their Mining skill.
Logic plays little role in the WoW economy where professions are concerned. Combined items often sell for less than the opportunity cost of selling the component parts.
Certain ores, particularly Silver, Gold, and Truesilver, often sell for considerably more money than the finished bars. But with any ore, check at the auction house before you smelt. Most auction houses are located near forges, so you can easily smelt if you determine the prices are better.
One possible exception may be Bronze Bars (1 Copper Ore=1 Copper Bar; 1 Tin Ore=1 Tin Bar; 1 Copper Bar + 1 Tin Bar = 2 Bronze Bars). This is a far more complex combination and many people find this combination tedious to make, so you will sometimes find that selling Bronze Bars is more profitable than selling the Copper Ore and Tin Ore needed to make them, particularly since the yield is 2. Your server will vary over time, so make sure you're aware of which is the most profitable route to take.
Differences in Mining between Classic and Retail
Mines are pass/fail.
In Retail:
In Shadowlands, mining a node that's high for you gives low yield, but you get ore. In many other expansions, if you attempt to mine an ore type that's too high level for you, you'll get nuggets. Combine 10 nuggets to get 1 ore.
In Classic:
If you try to mine a node that's too high level, you won't get anything but an error message.
Mines take multiple strikes to mine out completely.
In Retail:
When you successfully mine a node, you get all that node has to offer in one pass.
In Classic:
Mines have 2-4 iterations. When you successfully mine it the first time, it doesn't go away, and you will need to continue to mine it out until it disappears. You will only get skill mining out the first strike.
Ren's Take: Don't feel bad if you've hit it just once and run away. I've done it more often than I care to admit. It's not easy switching between games!
Mines "should be" one to a customer, unless sharing is agreed upon
in advance
.
In Retail:
Multiple people can mine the same node with no problems. Once the first person has tapped the node, it will remain for 35 seconds until it fades away. Before that happens, anyone else can mine the node for both skill and loot.
In Classic:
Mines can have 2-4 iterations until it's mined out, and then it disappears for everyone. Technically speaking, more than one person
can
mine a node. However, it's extremely rude to "force share" a node by hitting it while someone else is doing so; this is considered stealing. Only share nodes if this has been agreed to in advance, such as when you are in a party with another miner.
Mining ore doesn't yield experience.
In Retail:
Mining gives you experience, some ore, and maybe some rocks and gems.
In Classic:
Mining gives you some ore, and maybe some rocks and gems -- no experience.
You can only track one thing at a time.
In Retail:
You can track everything simultaneously, including Mines, Herbs, Fishing Nodes, and all hunter tracking types.
In Classic:
You can only have one type of tracking active at once. If you are tracking Mines, you can't be tracking anything else. This makes the desirable double gatherer Miner/Herbalist more challenging, since you can only track Mines or Herbs but not both at once. It also makes it harder for hunters, whose hunter tracking types also conflict with tracking gathering nodes.
Gathering Addons
Anyone serious about ore gathering should use a node-gathering mod. These will save information about what nodes you've gathered and where and display them on your map/minimap, and you can use this to help create your own rotations.
The best gathering mod for Classic is
Gathermate 2 Classic
, which shows gathering nodes for mining, herbalism, and treasures. You can pre-install many known nodes with the
Gathermate 2 data files.
How to Use This Guide
Each ore will list Best Zones and Other Zones. Best Zones have the highest number of possible nodes for this ore, so you'll have more chance of finding it. Other Zones still have a good number of nodes, but not as many as the Best Zones.
Suggested route maps have been added for the best-populated zones, but feel free to create your own routes. Individual farming goals don't always coincide with preplanned routes, so it's better to learn what zones have the best density, how to locate your target ore in the given terrain and create your own best routes. Plus, if everyone is running the same routes, nobody will get the best mining experience!
Ren Recommends are handy tips and personal favorite spots for ore farming.
Ore Levels
IMPORTANT: Levels in this guide refer to your Mining level, not the level of your character.
Each ore type has five level ranges to consider.
Start Level:
Lowest mining level where you can mine the node, and 100% chance of skilling on success. Failure is possible the closer you are to this start level.
Yellow:
Failures end, still a good chance at skilling, but not 100%.
Green:
Becoming trivial; lower chance of skilling. The closer you get to End Level, the less chance of getting skill points. Best to move on to a higher level ore if you wish to gain skill.
End Level:
Mastered. No more skill or experience from mining this node.
Mob Level Preferences:
There is correlation between the mob levels and frequency of specific mine types. A mixed zone like The Barrens will have more copper mines near the lower-level mobs live, and more tin mines near the higher-level mobs. The Mob Level Preference will give you an idea of which areas of a zone to target.
The header will also call out:
Best Zones:
Not only are these rich with ore nodes, but they follow a logical route with good density. Listed in order of node density. Best Zones will have route maps.
Other Zones:
These are high-density zones but may have scattered nodes without a great route to follow. Other Zones may be decent choices if you have other reasons to be there but won't include route maps.

is found in every 1-10 zone except one: Teldrassil. Giant trees don't make ore deposits. People creating night elf characters may wish to consider professions other than mining -- or realize that you aren't going to make any progress until reaching Darkshore. You could also choose to take the long and dangerous trip to Dun Morogh or Elwynn Forest to level up if you want to start mining right away.
Copper mines are never located within the 1-5 starter areas.
Copper Ore will have the most route maps because Classic tends to limit characters more closely to their starter zones at the beginning of the game.
Ren Recommends: Whatever side I'm playing, I go for the "Big Ds" for early mining: Dun Morogh and Durotar. Mulgore is actually a great mining zone, but I'm not partial to playing Tauren (I hate getting stuck going through doors). Elwynn and Tirisfal both feel scattered to me and not as route-intuitive. The Barrens, Westfall, and Loch Modan are all excellent transitional zones between Copper and Tin and it's hard to pick a favorite. The few times I've played Night Elves, I've found Darkshore frustrating because of the feeling I'm playing catch-up (no mines in Teldrassil) and because of the amount of up-and-down climbing involved along the eastern mountain zone.

Best Farming Routes for Copper Ore
East Kingdoms - Alliance:
Elwynn Forest (1-10)
Elwynn is decent mining, but as one of the most popular zones for leveling, competition is high. If you're a serious miner, you might consider leveling up in Dun Morogh instead. Still, Elwynn isn't a bad mining zone and there's plenty for most miners to do here. Run north from Goldshire, hit the mountains and start following them east, around Stonecairn Lake, and the logging camp to just south of the road to Redridge. Then you'll have to start making an overland route; there's often mines around Ridgepoint Tower, and then overland to the river, catching the road to the ridgeline below Tower of Azora. Then it's back to overland, checking ridges all the way to Westbrook Garrison. Follow the mountains back. There are decent opportunities for cloth farming from the bandits and gnolls you'll encounter on this route.
Ren Recommends: Many people recommend farming inside the two kobold mines, but I've always found them a hassle. They're crowded with fast mob respawn, and while there are a few mines in there, I found it much faster just to stay outside. Not true in all cases that inside = slower, but in my opinion, these aren't worth the trouble.

Kalimdor - Alliance:
Darkshore (10-20)
Darkshore has been added because, although it's only a moderately good copper zone, it's the only choice for those starting out as Night Elves who want to remain in their ancestral lands. Start out in Auberdine, swing northeast through Bashal'Aran, and then up to the shoreline. Stay near the shoreline on top of the ridge, heading east to the mountains just over the river. Follow the mountains south (the caves in the northeast are a good side trip, although crowded with NPCs) until the entrance to Ashenvale, then head north, along the top of the shoreline ridge, Peek into Ameth'Aran, and then head back up to Auberdine.
Click here for full-sized Darkshore route map
East Kingdoms - Horde:
Tirisfal Glades (1-10)
Tirisfal Glades isn't the best starting zone for miners, but there's plenty to keep them busy. There are a couple of dead crossing zones (no pun intended) with no mining across Undercity and across the top of Brightwater Lake, but for the most part, it's a steady farm. You can choose to loop into Night's Web Hollow, but generally, I've found the spawn rate there is not high enough to deal with the irritation of the many spiders in the area. The advantage of this route as it does run through several undead and humanoid camps, which makes side-farming cloth a viable alternative.
Click here for full-sized Tirisfal Glades route map
Kalimdor - Alliance
Dun Morogh (1-10)
A route map for Dun Morogh is almost redundant -- it's teeming with ore in every corner. There are a couple of side trips worth taking, one into the Yeti caves just southwest of Kharanos and into the caves in Gol'bolar Quarry, as these are often full of tasty ore. Yet, even if you're not into spelunking, just running around outside is enough to keep any copper miner happy. In the eastern part of the zone, consider some zigzagging in the rocky areas southwest of Brewnall Village.
Click here for full-sized Dun Morogh route map
Kalimdor - Horde
Durotar (1-10)
Like Dun Morogh, it's almost unnecessary to draw a route map for Durotar, since ore is everywhere. Starting in Razor Hill, cross to the eastern side of the road past Tiragarde Keep, hitting the mountain range south to Sen'jin Village. Cross overland to the mountains along the western edge, running past the many rock formations where ore can hide. After this, it's another follow-the-mountains route until reaching the Southfury River, then follow the rocks north. When heading across the top, zigzag slightly north and south until you reach the turn at the eastern edge, as you'll find ore on both sides but your Track Mines isn't strong enough to reach both running straight down the middle. Run south back to Razor Hill along the outer edge.
Ren Recommends: When you're new, poor, and every copper counts, hunt any Scorpids you may find along the way. These drop
蝎眼
, which may not look exciting, but sell at vendors for . That's a lot when you're starting out.
Click here for full-sized Durotar route map
Mulgore (1-10)
Mulgore is the definition of a loop route -- it's a giant circle all around the outer edge. It's a no-brainer route. If you're a little lower level and want to avoid the harpies in the north, you can take the dotted route across the top of Thunder Bluff. Just make it to a wall, any wall, and start running around. Personally, I don't bother going into the caves, because it's largely unnecessary. Feel free to do so if you see a lot of mines area available.

is found primarily in zones in the 10-30 range, with the greatest concentration in 10-20 zones. This will overlap strongly with
铜矿石
. A few 30+ areas may have a stray Tin Mine or two, but
it's best to stay in areas with mobs ranging from levels 15-25.
The Alliance has more alternatives when it comes to good places to hunt Tin, but The Barrens and Hillsbrad are both good choices for Horde.
Ren Recommends: Westfall is a great example of a zone that both has a high density of nodes (the most of any of the zones) and a shortage of viable routes. Jangolode Mine has very high mine density, but it's a high-traffic quest area and not easy to move around in. There are some tin nodes along the western coastline, but they're scattered and require some up and down as some are near the shore and the others on top of a cliff with separated passages to the top. There are also a lot of mines in the caverns leading to Deadmines, but again, not the easiest or most convenient place to farm.

Best Farming Routes for Tin Ore
Barrens (10-25)
The Barrens is one of the best copper and tin mines in the game, and well worth visiting. The major downside of the Barrens is that it's very crowded -- it's the feeder zone for Orcs, Tauren, and Trolls (and some enterprising Undead) that it's one of the most popular questing zones in-game. Still, it's full of both Copper and Tin. The map shows two routes that can easily be combined when you're farming both. Although the metals in quest tend to be more common on the designated routes (Copper is more common in the lower-level areas, Tin in the higher-level areas), you will find both along each of these routes.
The dotted area across the middle of the zone represents the crossing point for both Copper and Tin routes, and this can easily become a figure-8 on a unified route. This takes a path near mountains around the Stagnant Oasis and Wailing Caverns, which are rich in mines.
Click here for full-sized Barrens route map
Wetlands (20-30)
Wetlands has the advantage of not being a traditional choice, yet the tin node density here is high enough that you can do reasonably well farming it. Starting at Dun Algaz, move north along the western mountain ridge, though the Angerfang orc camps and around Whelgar's dig site.
You'll need to cross the fens here through an ore-free zone, going straight north to the mountains (swing by the vendors at 25,25 to see if they have any interesting rare patterns for sale), then start following the mountains east and then south back toward Grim Batol. Be careful in the whelp area not to follow the road going east into the mountains; there are elite Red Dragons down there and you probably don't want to mess with them.

银矿

锡矿
. Stories that certain tin mines spawn silver mines more frequently are just that: stories (the plural of "anecdote" is not "data"). The evidence is that any Tin Mine can turn into a Silver Mine, but it's very rare and totally RNG-dependent. Luck plays a huge factor.
If you're after silver, go to Wetlands if you're Alliance and Barrens if you're Horde, and scour the tin mines.
Ren Recommends: Silver is one of the most valuable ores in ore form. The bridge from Tin to Iron has a difficult road between 115 and 125, when Tin is green to mine (and skill-ups few) and Iron becomes available. Smelting Silver Ore is a fast path over this bridge, so in a mature economy, many people will buy Silver Ore to get them over this difficult 10 levels. You can use it yourself, but unless you have a burning need for Silver Bars, keep it in ore form and keep mining over the 115-125 hump.

mostly prefers the 30-40 zones, but there is one exception to this: Thousand Needles, which is considered a 25-35 zone. Iron is plentiful all over Thousand Needles, and not just in the higher-level areas of the wyverns and racetrack. Iron has some overlap with tin, but given the level spread between Tin and Iron, you won't find a great deal of Tin in Iron-rich zones.
Ren Recommends: Graduating to iron always feels like I'm up to "big kid" status. Both Arathi and Thousand Needles offer great loop routes and remain my favorite zones for iron farming. Alterac is compact and has some interesting possibilities as well. It requires more up-and-down climbing and some of the nodes are inside an elite area, which is what kept it out of the top list. Desolace and Badlands have many nodes but they're more scattered.

Thousand Needles (25-35)
Thousand Needles' loop route is actually a little more back-and-forth than the picture would indicate. There's plenty of iron within the loop as well, so it's worth running straight down the middle every once in a while to cover the area. Don't forget the wyvern area at the top, particularly if you're also a skinner. Shimmering Flats does have a light mix of iron and mithril mines around the periphery, but it's not sufficient density to make the (very long) trip around it worthwhile. Stick to the heart of the zone.
Click here for full-sized Thousand Needles route map
Arathi Highlands (30-40)
Arathi is more an iron zone than a mithril zone, but it's best to show both routes here, as Arathi is also a good mithril zone and will be good for transitional mining. The iron route (gray) is a standard loop route, cutting off Stormgarde Keep and heading through a couple of different ogre mounds. These mines are worth exploring, as they are often rich mining as well as good cloth farming. The southern mithril route (yellow) covers a smaller area in the southern part of the zone and loops around Stromgarde Keep. The dotted line shows the overlap between these two routes.

Ren Recommends: Also like Silver, Gold Ore tends to be more valuable as ore than as a bar, though not as much. It's also used to speed Mining leveling, but it's not as important in this case. Iron becomes Green at 175 -- the same level where Mithril becomes available. There's no ten-level hump of low skilling to get over between Iron and Mithril, so the raw ore isn't in as much demand for this reason. Still, it's rare and needed in more recipes than Silver, so this is definitely one to see whether the bars or ore is fetching a better price.

Arathi provides a nice double-header here: sticking more to the upper zone gives you more Iron, and then once you hit 175, you can start focusing more on the lower part of the zone for Mithril. It's the ideal transitional farm zone.
Ren Recommends: The Badlands doesn't have the highest spawn rate for Mithril nodes, but it's long remained a popular zone for mithril mining because it's got a couple of locally prolific areas for Mithril. I've broken my own rule and added a route map for the Badlands as well.

Badlands (35-45)
These two smallish routes have long been such popular Mithril routes that it's worth recounting them here. The first camp in the west is Camp Cagg, a Dustbelcher Ogre area with some nice side camping for

Tanaris (40-50)
Tanaris is a classic loop route, with a few breaks in the line where you won't find much ore, particularly between Steamwheedle Port and the Caverns of Time, and past Zul'Farrak. Bugs are your friend here because the Noxious Lair and Gaping Chasm areas are full of mining goodness, mostly untouched except by those few who quest there. Be sure to circle all around the edges of these areas and not just along the outer wall. This area floats near a couple of ogre camps, which are nice side farms for
魔纹布
.

Blasted Lands (45-55)
Blasted Lands is another fairly traditional loop route around the outer edge, with a small projection of mountains that gives you two passes at a good area instead of one. The nice part about Blasted Lands, and why it may be a good idea to move there as soon as you're able, is that it also gives you some chance at
瑟银矿石
from small veins -- although perhaps not
too
early, as seeing all those lovely thorium veins and not being able to mine them is very frustrating! But if your mining skill is over 220 or so, and you want to have a smooth transition, by all means, move to Blasted Lands.

And like Silver and Gold, Truesilver may be more valuable in ore form, because of its use in skilling Mining. In this case, however, the value of Mithril may work against making Truesilver Ore a lot more valuable than the bars. There is an even larger skilling gap between Mithril Ore and Thorium Ore; Mithril Ore turns green at 225, and Thorium isn't able to be mined until 250. Yet, Mithril's inherent value makes it worth saving Truesilver Ore is more valuable ore form and getting through those 25 green points mining Mithril.

The zone recommendations above are based on a factor that doesn't apply to the other metal types: zones with more Rich Thorium possibilities were weighted higher than those that have a lot of Small Thorium but not many Rich veins.
Most miners breathe a big sigh of relief once they hit 250 and gain the ability to mine
瑟银矿石
: now all things are possible. No mining vein is too high level. You can farm either Small or Rich veins at level 275 mining, but you'll want to concentrate on Rich veins as soon as possible. Not only do these yield more thorium when mined, but they also give better byproducts, particularly the valuable
奥术水晶
.
Ren Recommends: Winterspring is a bit of a controversial choice because many of the nodes are in the southern part of the zone with a great number of elites that you will need to avoid. However, there are some good general routes and decent pockets of Rich Thorium outside the elite area, so it's still worth considering. Un'goro is the undisputed king of thorium mining due to the easy circular route, but it does have two practical issues. First, it's super popular, so competition will be high. Second, there may be some up and down climbing that poses more of a problem in a world where flying isn't possible.

Best Farming Routes for Thorium Ore
Un'goro Crater (48-55)
Un'goro is the classic favorite for
瑟银矿石
miners, with some good reasons: it's another no-brainer loop route. For double gatherers, it's also a great place for both high-level leathers and herbs. If you're brave, you can go down into the Slithering Scar with the bugs, and mine
软泥覆盖的瑟银矿脉
and
as well. There are also some mines around the central volcano.
However, it has its downsides, besides the fact that it's popular and busy. Many of the best ore spots are up into the hills around the mountains, and finding the paths up into those areas isn't straightforward (someday I plan to have these route entrances marked).

Winterspring (53-60)
Winterspring has some of the largest pockets of Rich Thorium Veins, but some of these are in areas best farmed by hunters, druids, or rogues -- any class with a get- or stay-out-of-aggro cards in their pockets. The dotted-line area in Darkwhisper Gorge is the worst problem area, but there are also some elite Blue Dragons in the areas south of Lake Kere'thil you may wish to avoid.
Still, this is a standard outside-wall loop route. Horde players will need to be careful maneuvering around Starfall Village, but otherwise, this presents only normal levels of danger for a zone in this level range. The western loop can be combined with farming
冬泉灵魂珠串
for
给萨尔法的珠串
, which awards rep with
木喉要塞
.

Silithus (55-60)
Silithus is yet another outer-wall route, with some possible bug adventures for those willing to take on the risks. Hive'Ashi, Hive'Regal and Hive'Zora are worth looping for nodes, although players need to be careful about wandering elites. The burrow entrances sometimes have mines close enough to the entrance that you don't have to make an all-or-nothing commitment.

You need mining 275 for rich thorium veins. Otherwise, excellent guide!

Just did a full circle of 1K Needles
For iron it was not so good.
For "any ore you can get" its perfect
25 copper ore
29 tin ore
13 Iron Ore
4 Mithril ore
23 rough stone
17 coarse stone
10 heavy stone
6 solid stone
1 moss agate
1 citrine

If you're trying to get a lot of copper ore quick at a high level your bags will fill up fast. I ran the
Mulgore
route for 100 copper dont forget that copper ore only
stacks in 10
, so I kept stopping at the
Venture Co. Mines Cave
to
smelt ore into bars (stacks in 20
) to save space and time. Hope this helps anyone else trying to grind out Deadly Blunderbuss for their mount like myself.

Did Tanaris route for mithril with 60% mount, spent 20-25min and got 3 nodes. 1 was small thorium. Not worth it.

For starters, farming for tin ore is annoying as hell any way you slice it. You will get a ton of it while leveling, but if you are trying to specifically farm for it you have to contend with the fact that it is pretty much always mixed in with lots of other nodes. The Barrens route they have posted here, for example, will garner you a lot (a LOT) more copper than tin more likely than not. The route they published also cuts off the Bael Modan mining pit, which is something you should check. There are always three more nodes down there (if they are up, of course) and 1-2 of them are always tin.
I recommend doing this route but incorporating Thousand Needles into it. You will probably get more tin down there than you do on the whole Barrens route but even there there is still a bunch of copper and, of course, iron. At least the iron ore is worth something though.
The Alterac route some that some other sites post is hot garbage for tin, BTW. You are better off just doing Hillsbrad (don't forget the miner cave) and southern Silverpine if you are in that neck of the woods.

I consider Un'Goro Crater the best for Thorium in both Classic and Retail.
In Retail, if you're on a fast flying mount, then you can make it around before the node respawns.
In Classic, you don't have that issue, just others doing the same as you.

umm FYI if u want skill ups and have another toon with you as well u can hold shift while mining and get the skill up then back away to let the other person get the skill up.

The Arathi Basin mithril loop has to be done counter-clockwise, I believe. As far as I can tell, there's no way out of the water on either side of the keep, and no way to get up to the hills southwest of the keep from the valley southeast of it.

Just a note.. you learn to smelt truesilver at mining 230 at which point it is grey, so no skill ups for smelting it.

Tin Ore farming is EASILY accomplished in Silverpine Forest. More specifically, Beren's Peril cave area...inside and outside.
