*WARNING! This guide contains A LOT of spoilers!*
Following the defeat of The Burning Legion on Argus, unrest between the Alliance and Horde grows after a mysterious substance called Azerite is discovered. Once again, the machines of war spring to life and the fate of Azeroth hangs in the balance. This guide will serve as an overview of the pre-patch event: "The War of the Thorns", covering the world quests, rewards, and important lore of both factions.
What is The War of the Thorns?
"Conflict emerges in Darkshore as the Horde and Alliance battle for control over Teldrassil in this limited time event!"
The
is the pre-patch event which will start on July 24th and last until August 14th, the launch day of Battle for Azeroth.
Part one
of the Horde and Alliance questlines start on July 24th, and
part two
is speculated to start on July 31st. Up until the launch of Battle for Azeroth, the Horde and alliance will go through a series of quests to try and gain control Teldrassil.
Why are We Fighting?
Sylvanas's goal is to gain control of Darnassus to regulate the flow of Azerite because she fears Anduin will use it to destroy the Horde. By killing Malfurion Stormrage, Sylvanas believes that it will scare the people of Darnassus into submission and to keep them from fighting back.
Sylvanas: "Time is not a luxury we possess, but I respect your desire to know more. THIS has forever altered the balance of power in Azeroth. Deposits of Azerite are being located across the world, <player>. Though we do not yet understand its full potential, it is clear that this substance has vast destructive capability. What will war look like in twenty years? In a hundred? How can the Horde hope to defend its borders if the Alliance controls the flow of Azerite?"
Sylvanas: "What IS certain is that the Alliance will use Darnassus as a safe harbor for funneling Azerite into the Eastern Kingdoms. Anduin Wrynn will build powerful new weapons, and sooner or later he will turn them upon our homelands. First he will strike at the Undercity and Silvermoon, then his gaze will fall upon Kalimdor. For the sake of the Horde's future, we must be the first to act. By occupying Darnassus, we will control the flow of Azerite and ensure it cannot be used against us. The Alliance will dare not attack its own city for fear of harming civilians. With a single stroke, we will guarantee generations of peace."
Sylvanas: "The kaldorei will defy our occupation... unless we break their sprits. We must inflict a blow that will show them what is at stake. They need to lose something... someone... in whom they have absolute trust and faith. A symbol of hope. <The Dark Lady narrows her eyes.> Malfurion Stormrage must die."
Mount Rewards
Completion of the War of the Thorns campaign rewards each faction with their own unique, faction-specific mounts.
ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE QUESTLINE AS ONE FACTION, YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THE OTHER FACTION'S MOUNT AND DO NOT HAVE TO DO THE QUESTLINE AGAIN.
"One of the last of the great armored hippogryphs to escape the burning of Teldrassil, it carried the last few citizens it could to safety before collapsing of exhaustion."

World Quests
These world quests reward gear, azerite, and reputation. In order to unlock the world quests, you must complete either the Horde or the Alliance War of the Thorns questline. After you do the questline on one character, your alts of that faction will receive an option from the faction leader to skip straight to the World Quests so you do not have to do them all over again.
How to skip to world quests on alts if you've done the first week's questline on a character already:
Hand in A Short-Lived Peace, accept The Horde Uprising but DO NOT hand in to Matthias Shaw. Instead, talk to Anduin again and he will give you the option to skip.

In the second part of the event, the Horde break the stalemate by dispersing the wall of wisps, attacking them from many angles and making them flee in confusion. Malfurion tries to kill Saurfang, but is instead ambushed by Sylvanas. While he has the upper hand, Saurfang attacks from behind, grievously wounding Malfurion. Tyrande Whisperwind : "Attempt to stop me from taking him away, and die... or remain there, kneeling in the dirt, and live."

which requires players to report to Sylvanas in the Undercity.
Sylvanas and her forces, using the power of Azerite machines, attack the Night Elves by surprise. It's a bad time as Anduin has sent most of the fleet to Silithus. However, Malfurion attempts to save the day by creating a protective wall of wisps against the Horde, effectively creating a stalemate.

Nathanos Blightcaller: "A wall of wisps? Surely it is nothing our dark rangers and a few demolishers cannot overcome, my lady."

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: "We cannot destroy the wisps... not in numbers enough to matter. But we may be able to disperse them."
Zarvik Blastwix: "You want explosions? Buddy, you got it. Hop into one of these beauties and take it for a spin."

The Battle of the Thorns Aftermath
Upon completion of both parts of the War of the Thorns questline, Stormwind Harbor becomes occupied with Darnassian and Gilnean survivors who became homeless as a result of Horde's assault on Darkshore and Teldrassil. Additionally, the boat that took players to Darnassus prior to the burning of Tedrassil, will instead, take players to Boralus when BFA is released and players complete the Kul'tiras intro questline. However, if players still wants to go to Darkshore, there is a portal on the Stormwind Docks that allows players to do so.
If the player wishes to visit Teldrassil before the destruction of the tree, they can speak with
who restores the land to its previous state who can be found on the map below.
Teldrassil Set Ablaze
The War of the Thorns has also left a permanent mark on Darkshore which the Darnassian people might never recover from. From the town of Darkshore covered in ash and despair, you can see the once full of life tree Teldrassil engulfed in flames.
View of Teldrassil from Darkshore after the War of the Thorns.
Why Does the Tree Burn?
Sylvanas' motives of capturing the city do not line up with.. the city in flames. However, Sylvanas is ultimately responsible for burning the tree.
At the start of Warbringers, Sylvanas gives orders to invade Darnassus. Delaryn Summermoon, one of the major Night Elf questgivers, argues with her, imploring her to spare the innocent civilians and remember what she once fought for.
Sylvanas then experiences a flashback, showing Delaryn memories of her fall and the moment she was transformed by Arthas. But Delaryn is still not convinced why Sylvanas must be an enemy to life.
You've made life your enemy, That is a war you'll never win. You can kill us, but you cannot kill hope.
With those words, Sylvanas flies into a fit of rage, screaming at Nathanos to set Teldrassil alight, making sure to tilt Delaryn's face so she's forced to watch the tree burn.
Additional Details from CE Novellas
The novellas
Elegy
and
A Good War
explain her reasoning, as well as more plot points in the story, in much more detail. Below you can find some of the interesting plot points:
More details on Sylvanas' motivations for war. Worried about past actions of the Alliance, including Genn in Stormheim, she believes any peace will be short-lived. She plans to strike Darnassus first while the Alliance are diverted and their naval fleet is weakened after Legion. Then she hopes the Alliance will be hesitant to attack Undercity, as the Horde could threaten Darnassus. The Alliance hopefully would then fall into further bickering as they determine where to strike next, losing to the Horde.
We learn more details on the Night Elf resistance--they know they can't win the war at the start due to the sheer number imbalance, and focus on buying time to evacuate the citizens. We also get to know Delaryn a lot better in the novella, including her sudden rise to leadership, and how in spite of her inexperience, she enacts several successful defenses.
We also get more information on why Tyrande is mostly-absent from the questline. She's originally in Stormwind to plan the counter-attack on Silithus, then stays in Stormwind to provide leadership to the refugees coming from Darnassus.
It is implied that Elune, or Tyrande's prayer to Elune, was involved in Saurfang's decision to spare Malfurion.
It's still fairly-spontaneous why Sylvanas decides to burn the tree. However, she was incredibly vexed that Saurfang did not kill Malfurion, and was thinking of a new way to destroy morale among the Night Elves.
Saurfang undergoes a character transformation of sorts, questioning his honor and feeling guilt for his actions in past wars. This sets things up nicely for his resignation in the Battle for Lordaeron. We also learn Sylvanas is worried that Saurfang could become a great enemy of hers if he ever lost his sense of honor or left the Horde.
Most worryingly, Sylvanas has yet
another
motive for her actions, one bigger than the Alliance or the Horde.

Yes, it's only a game. And, yes, it simply mirrors the kind of madness we have seen in Rwanda, Bosnia and elsewhere but I still cannot get past the fact that, regardless of motives, the burning of Teldrassil is a great crime. My main is an Undead Mage who has been loyal to the Banshee Queen throughout my game play but this level of genocidal attack horrifies me. I will play through the scenario. I will get my mount yet I will be forever embarrassed to be part of a Horde that could do such things and follower of a leader who could order such destruction. I hear rumors that one day Thrall will return from Deepholm to ally with Khadgar in a peace faction that will work to reconcile the races of Azeroth and focus them on their true enemies, the Old Gods. I for one long to see that and will happily pledge my services to such a faction. I cannot join the Alliance and am now ashamed to be part of the Horde. I hope for a better world once we deal with the insanity of this one. Years ago I thought that one day this old mage would retire to a little house perhaps on some floating island above Nagrand, one with a tree for shade and a spring that drains down onto that fertile land. This horrid act makes me wish that day would come soon.

I just thought i would mention that i spotted a typo in this that you may wanna fix .
The War of the Thorns is the pre-patch event which will start on August 24th last until August 14th, the launch day of Battle for Azeroth.
I'm guessing that was supposed to say July 24th instead of August 24th lol

Is the World Quest "Wicked Kegger" correct, as listed in the article? Because something about it seems wrong to me. It is stated to be an Alliance side WQ, but why would an Alliance player be trying to slay ten Alliance defenders? It reads more like a Horde side WQ, that got mis-categorized. In fact, it sounds like a Horde side counterpart the "Detonate!" WQ.

Thank you for the detailed guide. Lots of great info in there.
One thing - The notes above speak of the War of Thorns questline beginning the 17th of July. It does not appear to be in play as of the 18th. Any info on when it will?

I am very mad at Blizzard for burning the Teldrassil and Darnassus... I know some players may like drastic stories like killing two faction champions or destroying two capital cities, but I don't like it.
I loved the Teldrassil zone, it was my first experience with World of Warcraft in 2008 and the best zone to level a new char. After 10 years I still remember most of the quests, monsters and places in Teldrassil. I am emotionally connected with that beautiful place and beautiful Darnassus city. I used to go there many times to have a nice, calm time in this lovely city.
If they decide to rebuild them in the future I may forgive them.
At the moment I am pissed off and... sad. :(

If you want my opinion, that Teldrassil's burning seems fishy to me. Mark my words: Sylvannas might not be the cause of it, she was all about conquering and stuff, but in my opinion, she would TAKE Teldrassil from the Night-elves, maybe burn some things, but remember, there are Druids on horde side too, that place might still be sacred to them too, since Druids of both faction tend to be neutral on each other.
My best guess is that 'Queen' Azshara (not Queen Sylvannas) is to blame for that massive burnout. She serves an Old Gold, probably the same that commanded Xavius since forever, then Neltharion. Xavius who hated Malfurion and his druids, Malfurion who defeated him at the Rift of Aln in Legion, freeing his Shan'do Cenarius. It seems to me that Sylvannas attack came in a proper time for Azshara and her minions, Teldrassil is surrounded by sea at all sides, she could have discovered, who knows, an underwater cave that could lead to the top of Teldrassil, and waited for when Sylvannas attack came...
And no one else would know the real reason for Teldrassil burning, but blame it all on Sylvannas. Then came Lordaeron attack... Yeah, the expansion could be all about old faction wounds, but we already know Azshara, and even N'zoth, could play a major role later, making this faction struggle pale in comparison. Besides, N'zoth is well known for corrupting very strong characters: Neltharion, Xavius, Azshara... What if he managed to corrupt Sylvannas? N'zoth too could be another force wanting Azeroth's blood, Azerite, he is an Old God.
Another strong motive for Azshara to be the culprit is that she hated Tyrande and all her Night-elves, for what they did during the War of the Ancients. One could blame Thalyssra and her Nightborne too but, during the War if the Ancients they simply hid away below their inpregnable shield, while Tyrande chose to fight Azshara, her highborne and Sargeras' demons.

So are the world quests available after part one? Or not till next week? I have alts still in all greens that need some catchup.

In order to unlock the world quests, you must complete either the Horde or the Alliance War of the Thorns questline.
After you do the questline on one character, your alts of that faction will receive an option from the faction leader to skip straight to the World Quests.

I would assume that the the War of the Thorns questline that leads to the mounts needs only to be done by one alt? I would hate to have to do it with all 14 of my alliance 110s... Is it a prerequisite for launching into BFA for a character for instance?

While I happy for all this information on the quest line, it is a bit confusing. I'm sitting here thinking there is more for me to do in the quest line with all this information.
Why can't you just post Chapter One information, and so on as the weeks count down? Then after the last chapter you can combine into one post.

I wonder what Y'Sera and Alexstraza think of this since they both blessed Teldrasil back during the novel "Stormrage" Also, they cannot truly kill Malfurion. He is in tune with the Emerald Dream that when killed, his spirit would return to the Emerald Dream and eventually regen into a living being. Cenarius returned in Cataclysm after he was slain by Grom Hellscream in Warcraft 3. About how many years was that?

The cinematic that we haven't yet seen from part 2 will be what reveals if this is actual destruction by Silvanas or a tragic accident while trying to take territory. I personally suspect its an accident involving Azzerite and its volatility based on nothing more than this was supposed to be an occupation to prevent aggression by the alliance, like they did in stormheim or should i say Greymane did . But we shall see.

i don't like it i mean normaly night elf don't have a city anymore its so ridiculous how they change time just with a single npc i mean if a new player create a night elf and he will spawn him in teldrasil but he saw that tree was burned aleardy ,i mean new night elf should be spawn in new zone like in stormwind where is darnassus ambasade or at the tree in mount of hyjal that should be to corect timeline or storyline etc..not when u create a night elf just spawn still there in teldrasil (where that suposed to be burned i mean when u create a night elf ,you create in present time of battle of azeroth where is no tree ,blizzard will never respect chronological time ,that why from my opinion they are so bad from this point of view). But actually when a new player create a new night elf he can stay there make leveling visit the Darnassus City.Hope they will make something like in foward patch for night elf to take teldrasil back.(same with ruins of lordaeron ,for my opinion its a bad story for them its like destroyed but its not..this moment when u talk with a npc to change time don't feel like a real storyline its like a improvisation from them ).

As a Horde Druid, it makes no sense whatsoever that I'd be asked to kill Malfurion,
or that I'd accept the task!
Sylvannas isn't the trusting kind, there's no way she'd send someone potentially conflicted to do such a thing, and there's no way a Druid would agree to assassinate Malfurion, it just doesn't make sense lore wise.
This feels a lot like a Red/Blue/Green ending kind of choice, where no consideration of the character performing the action has been plotted out. It would have been nice to have a slightly different quest for Horde Druids, at the
very least.
The next time I return to my Order Hall, I fully expect to have my butt whooped by a pack of very angry Cenarions.

Maybe I missed something, but the Alliance quest Long Away doesn't seem to be in the event on live. I wasn't offered it, just went straight from finding Malfurion in Darkshore to killing furbolgs and talking to hidden druids.
EDIT: My bad, Long Away is there but it comes after "Rock" The World. It's Dragon Attack that is completely missing.

Is anyone having any problems with these WQ NOT showing up after you've completed the quest line? I did them fine the first day but the 2nd day NONE showed up on my hunter but I can see them on my other alts and they still aren't showing up yet today.
UPDATED: Ok I never found any other info regarding this problem on wowhead but I decided to take my hunter out to Darkshore and see if by some miracle. lol the WQ might actually just pop up when I entered the spots where they should be and low and behold they did. So even if you don't see them on your map, head on out there and they might just pop up when you enter each area. I just looked on the map of one of my alts to see where they were located and when I flew into that area they all popped up but never did show up on my map. I hope this info was helpful to someone else.
UPDATED 8/1/2018: Received this from GM: I went ahead and hopped onto your character here, and after a few attempts it looks like I was able to get the world quests to show up for me! The main thing that finally worked was this console command in specific:
/console cvar_default
I hope this infor helps!

Speaking as someone who has lived through a fire raging across where they live, I plan to never do the Alliance side quests again. Not because it's too difficult or annoying but because it brings out very difficult memories. I write this so that I can let others know who have lived through fires that the quest where you try to save as many civilians as you can is not just heartbreaking. When I was doing it I could feel those same emotions and same panic as when the fires were going on in California October of 2017. I know I did not handle it well, and I hope anyone else can deal with it better, but I just know that I cannot do that quest again. I simply wanted to make this comment so that others could be sufficiently ready for what this quest might feel like. Thankfully when finishing up on either side it gives you both mounts so if you wanna get both and don't want to go through that just do Horde side. Or vice versa if you cannot stand standing with anything Horde atm. Whatever your choice best of luck.

"There are some inconsistencies in the plot, which hopefully will be addressed later:
1) At the start of this war, Sylvanas claims she wants to occupy Darnassus. However, Delaryn seems worried that as part of Sylvanas' invasion, she'll want to kill more innocent civilians.
2) None of the faction leaders look shocked or try to stop Sylvanas when she orders the tree to be burned--even Saurfang, who values honor.
3) When Sylvanas gives the orders to burn the tree, there are convenient siege weapons aimed perfectly at the tree, as if they were set up for this purpose.
4) After the Horde plays through the quest and talks to Sylvanas, she expresses regret that this is not the victory they hoped for. This is a puzzling statement as she decided to change course. Is she lying to us? Did she secretly want to burn the tree and lied to the player so we'd help her? Or did she genuinely want to occupy the city, and flew into a fit of rage and pettiness at Delaryn, similar to Arthas' choice to deny Sylvanas a quick death."
I see no inconsitencies here, and these points are easily explained:
1) Occupying Darnassus was probably the plan, but plans need to change on the fly, in battle. of course Delaryn is worried about the innocent civilians, as anyone would be.
2) In the cinematic, you don't see any Horde leaders, except for one in the background, so I'm not sure where you saw their "looks", but, she's the Warchief and she gave a very direct order. There is honor in obeying your Warchief.
3) Of course there were siege weapons present. They were planning to take the city. They wouldn't make a dent in that tree, so I son't see them as being part of some secret agenda.
4) I wouldn't say that what she expressed was regret, more of a "Too bad it's come to this, but this is what we must do" kind of thing. Your last idea on this one was probably the most correct.
Sylvaanas: "Hope fails"
Delaryn: "You can kill us, but you cannot kill hope"
Sylvanas looks at the Tree.. Hmmm..
We're at war, and The Horde has just destroyed a major Alliance city. I'd call that a win for us! Lok'tar Ogar!
**BTW: I've done this questline on both Horde and Alliance. Same conclusions. If anything, seeing that cinematic flashback to HOW Sylvanas became Forsaken makes me feel more empathy for her. But, she's gonna get wrecked. Like all the Horde Warchiefs..

With those words, Sylvanas flies into a fit of rage, screaming at Nathanos to set Teldrassil alight, making sure to tilt Delaryn's face so she's forced to watch the tree burn.
Absolutely wrong.
She yells at Nathanos because he hesitated to follow her orders. She burned the tree to break the night elves' spirits, not out of rage.

Blizzard story telling has lots of issues.
Illidan became a good-guy, while we know he tortured , enslaved people of outland. (remember Akama's people?)
Horde leaders used for pushing the story even though it caused lots of personality dilemma.
(Garrosh quotes Saurfang , kills his commander because he fought dishonorably, then what? embraces Sha? Some one who lived with shame of demon blood tainted father all that time, forgots that ? )
There is resurrection, healing in game but no one can heal one of the greatest troll leaders?
Shadow priests become void priests all of a sudden.
Warlocks does not play major role in a Legion expansion.?
Malfurion can protect an entire map but cannot stop Xavius?
Malygos cannot cast a silence, any interrupt?
Tirion , greatest strategist of LK expansion, somehow rushes ahead alone?
While there are portals teleports and spaceships all around, Horde are attacking because of Logistical reasons? To block trade routes? LOL
They sacrificed story consistency because of this Deus-Ex Machina's
So everyone should think twice before labeling one side evil/good because of this.
They tried to tell a story with shades of gray but failed. They are not ABLE to manage a good story arc so we should think/judge/criticise. WoW lore lost that quality after LK imo. Maybe it's the downside of MMO and can't be done i don't know.
If you want to talk over good/gray/evil go play real RPG'S ... Baldur's Gate Series The Witcher Deus Ex you get the point....

Blizzard don't care about the story or logic, they only care about shareholders and so make some half baked idea that gets everyone hooked and sucker punched in the gut. Stop being fooled by their psychology and getting dragged in and then maybe they will listen. - - Druids can't attack the root of druidism even though I'd like the new mount Blizzard can kindly insert it where the sun doesn't shine.
