A core choice at the start of your journey in the Shadowlands will have you decide where your allegiance lies; would you rather support the Kyrian of Bastion, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, the Night Fae of Ardenweald, or the Venthyr of Revendreth?
While the decision of your Covenant is impactful, it is a choice that can be changed quickly once you reach Shadowlands' endgame. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story in different paths.
In this Shadowlands guide, we will help you choose the right covenant for your playstyle, based on how much they impact your performance as a Brewmaster Monk, updated for .

Covenant Changes with Patch 9.2 for Brewmaster Monks
Once you have hit 80 Renown on at least one character, you are free to swap Covenants on any character. You can freely swap Conduits at all times, as well. These quality-of-life improvements were added in Patch 9.1.5, but they are still very nice to have in Patch 9.2.
Necrolord received a small damage nerf to
骨尘酒
(it deals 40% of damage, up from 35%, but can no longer Crit), but several substantial buffs to the previously-very-very-very-very-bad Covenant Legendary
万古酒
.
Here's the quick list of fixes to
万古酒
:
万古酒
can proc while
骨尘酒
is active (it couldn't before).
万古酒
procs that occur while
骨尘酒
is active will extend the duration of
骨尘酒
(hard-casting
骨尘酒
over an existing
骨尘酒
will still reset the duration to 10 seconds).
Once you have double Legendaries equipped, this is a pretty large buff to Necrolord Monk.
万古酒
increases
骨尘酒
uptime from ~30% to ~60%. In raids, the unreliable nature of
万古酒
procs and frequent taunt-swapping may waste a lot of this value. If you're not tanking, getting your Brews back off of cooldown doesn't matter much, does it? In Mythic+, this is a pretty substantial offensive and defensive boost to Necrolord Brewmaster Monks.
That being said, Kyrian Brewmaster Monk is still the standard setup. The all-around strength is terrific.
精序兵戈
is the most consistent offensive cooldown available to Brewmaster Monks, the defensive value is still good, and it synergizes really nicely with the new Brewmaster 4-piece, which tacks damage, healing, and effective health onto dealing
醉酿投
damage. It may not be the best in every single situation, but it's still the best all-around choice.
Best Brewmaster Monk Covenants for Raiding
Signature Skills
Having an extra potion (
静谧之瓶
) puts Kyrian at a minor defensive advantage over Night Fae and Venthyr under normal circumstances. Necrolord's
血肉铸造
has good defensive potential and can be used as a decent defensive cooldown. It is a channeled defensive skill, so that can also be pretty unwieldy. There is a fair amount of movement in many of the encounters, and the extra movement from Signature Skills like
灵魂变形
is nice, but not mandatory. It's more situationally-useful than
静谧之瓶
, which is always good and easy to use.
To put it this way:
灵魂变形
and
暗影之门
are great when you need to teleport through something, or to move around a lot. That makes them great on encounters like Painsmith, Desaugne, and Artificer Xy'mox, but not all that useful on a lot of other encounters, either.
静谧之瓶
and
血肉铸造
are great any time you take damage. That should happen every fight.
Covenant Monk Abilities
Kyrian is arguably the simplest, all-around best Covenant available to Brewmaster Monks thanks to
精序兵戈
. Mikanikos' end-tree trait
溢流心能加速器
supercharges the power of
精序兵戈
, increasing its damage value and reducing its cooldown. It's tremendous at dealing burst damage, it's a reasonably simple and easy skill to use, and it's always very good. Kyrian remains the go-to Covenant choice for Brewmaster Monks in raids, and for good reason -- it's really good in every situation.
Necrolord is a more defensive alternative. The Necrolord Covenant ability
骨尘酒
is generally the second-strongest Covenant ability available to Brewmaster Monks, and its only real downside is that it has a short duration. In Mythic+, its short cooldown makes up for that weakness pretty effectively, but it is a weaker bonus in raids, and it is worse for threat generation than Kyrian, as well. Its 10-second duration makes it a mediocre option as a burst damage cooldown for lining up with other effects like potions, Bloodlust, and trinkets. It is a more consistent defensive bonus than
精序兵戈
, which makes it excellent for an encounter like Rygelon, which heavily emphasizes the value of consistent absorb shields. On most other encounters, the margin between Kyrian, Necrolord, and Night Fae in terms of defense is very small, so that's not really a huge deal. Basically, Necrolord is a safer, slightly weaker alternative to Kyrian. It's the minivan of Monk Covenant options. Very safe, a little boring.
Night Fae is an interesting option thanks to
妖魂踏
, which grants a moderate amount of sustained damage and healing. Night Fae is quite a good bit behind Kyrian and Necrolord in single target damage and any burst damage situations, but it's not that bad in sustained AoE (e.g., Prototype Pantheon Phase 3). The biggest weakness of Night Fae Monk, other than the single target DPS, is being forced to fight on top of the Faeline for resets. This means that having to move due to enemy mechanics can be a significant DPS and defensive loss. The benefits it offers are extremely nice. You get good AoE damage, a terrific defensive buff, and tons of stacks of
林地复兴
from Niya. It's worth upwards of 10% Mastery and Maximum Health (15-20% with good RNG). Unfortunately, it's still not enough to make Night Fae genuinely competitive with Kyrian in single-target raid situations, but it has some redeeming qualities. Finally,
灵魂变形
is very helpful for dealing with some of the mobility requirements on encounters like Painsmith, Artificer Xy'mox, or Desaugne.
Venthyr saw a rise in popularity over Patch 9.1 due to its rise in popularity among Mistweaver Monks. Sometimes those Mistweaver Monks go Brewmaster to tank a run, and don't want to switch to a Covenant they don't have leveled up. That's understandable, and Venthyr Monk, at its most basic level, is fine. It's not great, but not bad, either. Its greatest strength is that it's extremely simple to use. Press
陨落僧众
, they'll deal damage, shield you, and do a tiny bit of raid healing. That's it! On its own, as a 3-minute cooldown that just offers a modest burst of damage, Venthyr Monk isn't great. The reason it's good for Mistweaver is that the Adepts deal a ton of healing, and
罪邪古训
interacts with all kinds of Crits, including Crit heals, so the cooldown as a Mistweaver is always very low. As a Brewmaster, the Venthyr Legendary offers roughly 60-90 seconds of cooldown reduction on each
陨落僧众
in pure single target, and closer to 2 minutes in AoE. Venthyr Brewmaster Monk is generally the weakest choice overall. It's not good, but not terrible, either.
Raid Covenant Recap
Kyrian is the best, simplest, most reliable choice for Brewmaster Monks in all content, and in raids it reigns above the other Covenant options.
Necrolord is a consistent defensive setup that can function well in raids. It's very good against Rygelon due to the unusually-high value of absorb shields on that encounter.
Night Fae is offensively weak in most situations, but offers powerful, slightly inconsistent defensive value and excellent mobility.
Venthyr is generally a weaker option than Kyrian or Necrolord, but it's not horrible. It's decent and very easy to use.
Best Brewmaster Monk Covenants for Mythic+
Covenant power is slightly -- but only slightly -- different in Mythic+ than it is in raids for Brewmaster Monks. Fortunately for Brewmaster Monks, they still have a couple of good options!
精序兵戈
is still an excellent DPS cooldown in Mythic+, and it can really help with bursting down big pulls. It's pretty simple, but it's very strong. There's not much more to say: It's great!
骨尘酒
adds a lot of defensive value in Mythic+ that can make it reasonably competitive with
精序兵戈
. The DPS increase it offers is weaker, but it's still decent. Although it is not as effective a burst cooldown, it is available significantly more often -- around every 30 seconds. This makes it a more reliable defensive option throughout the course of a Mythic+ run. Basically, you can expect
骨尘酒
to be available for nearly every pull in a Mythic+ run, potentially up more than once per pull. That's great! Because Necrolord deals less damage, the threat generation on pulls is generally weaker than Kyrian. While
血肉铸造
is not as convenient as an extra health potion, it's a decent extra defensive layer for starting out Mythic+ pulls, and it can be a really good defensive cooldown if you can quickly time it to line up with a dangerous attack.
妖魂踏
adds sustained AoE damage and healing. It's really good in Mythic+, but it can be vulnerable to mechanics and affixes (such as Sanguine or Storming) that force you to move, which can be annoying. It's not as defensively consistent as Necrolord, but the defensive benefit it provides is extremely powerful, especially when combined with Tier Set bonuses. The on-pull threat generation of
妖魂踏
is nice, as is the group healing and defensive component it provides, but the inconsistency in
妖魂踏
resets and positioning requirements can take a lot more effort to get comfortable with than Necrolord or Kyrian, and the lack of value as a burst DPS cooldown also makes this less valuable for pulling big packs and burning them down quickly. It's a powerful defensive choice, and can feel great when played well, but it is tougher to play than the alternatives.
Venthyr functions in Mythic+ than it does in raids. When combined with
罪邪古训
,
陨落僧众
has a roughly 45-60 second cooldown in AoE. Is that better than Kyrian or Necrolord? No, but it is more consistent than Night Fae, and it's pretty easy to play.
罪邪古训
is a decent bonus in AoE, and the offensive and defensive benefit of having
陨落僧众
available very frequently is actually really nice. Your overall damage will benefit from the excellent cooldown reduction -- although it won't help with your threat generation, and you still won't deal as much damage as you could by simply playing Kyrian. There's not really any great reason to play Venthyr Brewmaster Monk, but if your group needs a Venthyr and no one else can fill, it's a reasonable option.
Mythic+ Covenant Recap
Kyrian is the best all-around option for Mythic+. It's not the strongest defensively, but the offensive output is exceptional, it's consistent, and the interaction with the tier set 4-piece bonus is a very good defensive benefit. It's the best.
Necrolord is extremely consistent defensively. It performs really well in Mythic+ from a defensive standpoint, but it is weaker offensively -- and that means threat generation is weaker than Kyrian or Night Fae.
Night Fae works pretty well in Mythic+, but it can be inconsistent. It's a weaker offensive option than Kyrian, and a less-consistent defensive option than Necrolord. It's a decent choice, but the consistency issues keep it from being popular at a high level.
Venthyr is generally only a Covenant you should play in Mythic+ if you need to fill a Venthyr slot in a Halls of Atonement or Sanguine Depths run, or you just feeling like doing something silly.
Brewmaster Monk Covenant Popularity
Below you can see the data on what are the most picked Covenants for Brewmaster Monks. This data updates automatically and comes directly from Blizzard's API.
Brewmaster Monk Raiding Covenant Analysis
Kyrian
精序兵戈
is great. It's a large, powerful all-purpose cooldown. It grants a major DPS increase, stacking up to 32% more damage, and it grants a decent Mastery buff.
洞察一击
is a pretty minor boost to its power. It's not great, to be honest.
精序兵戈
is simple, but strong and versatile. It's not always the best choice, but it's
always
competitive.
On top of that,
召唤执事者
's healing potion is undeniable. It's a third instant heal, along with regular health potions and healthstones. It rules.
Necrolord
骨尘酒
provides a decent DPS increase while active (24.5% with Rank 1
骨髓酒花
), and it increases your Brew recharge rate. Its cooldown is reduced by Brew recharge effects, which means the average cooldown is significantly less than the base of 60 seconds. Without the cooldown reduction of the conduit, the average cooldown is around 33 seconds. Because
骨髓酒花
was capped at only 2.5 seconds of cooldown reduction per
骨尘酒
cast, this means the average cooldown is right around 30 seconds, and that holds up in both AoE and single target. As a result, it's reasonably competitive with
精序兵戈
in terms of the DPS increase, however, it doesn't have the same value as a pure burst damage cooldown to line up with other effects like Time Warp, trinkets, and potions, so while it may be a lot more reliable in Mythic+, the upside isn't quite as high in raids. It does provide a small degree more defensive value, but the difference is relatively minor.
血肉铸造
is pretty good now. It's a shield based on your health pool, which is good, and it provides damage reduction while channeling, which is also good. You can dodge and parry while channeling, which makes it a small, but useful defensive cooldown for mitigating predictable sources of damage. It's still not a great idea to spend combat time channeling a shield when you could be performing your standard ability priority, but there are spots where it can be a useful move.
Night Fae
妖魂踏
has been redesigned and retuned several times, and while it's very pretty to look at, it just doesn't deal enough damage to be competitive with the other Covenants, or to compensate for its inconsistent resets in single target. From a design perspective, it fixes a lot of problems Brewmaster Monk has. It adds AoE damage, it adds periodic healing, and it introduces a fun resetting offensive skill into Brewmaster's otherwise-static, boring rotation. The added Stagger value the buff grants is also very nice, essentially providing a second
坚定不屈
. The healing isn't a huge deal, but it can add up over the course of a fight or a Mythic+ run.
On paper and in Simulationcraft, Night Fae is a competitive damage option in AoE, but that assumes no movement and diminishes the value of burst windows. It's simply not a competitive single-target damage option. It's not bad in sustained AoE, but it requires effort and RNG to be competitive, thanks to the restrictive shape and size of the Faeline. The length and pattern of the Faeline is inconsistent, and as a result, if you are forced to move after casting Faeline Stomp, you may not realistically be able to move to another location within the Faeline. This can interfere with your ability to trigger resets.
妖魂踏
is a cool-looking Monk Covenant skill, but it wasn't expanded beyond 5 (6, technically) targets when the Patch 9.1.5 AoE uncapping occurred, which means it's really not good at huge AoE, either. It does provide a really strong defensive benefit along with solid 4-6-target cleave, and that can be really good under ideal conditions. The bad news is that being a Night Fae Brewmaster Monk requires more mental effort to remain competitive than being Kyrian or Necrolord. If a fight requires frequent movement, Night Fae Monk suffers horribly. Even if a fight requires literally no movement at all, Night Fae Monk still isn't great offensively.
It's good defensively, though, and that's worth something.
灵魂变形
is the simpler of the two mobility Covenant skills. It doesn't have the same degree of control as the Venthyr teleport, but the ease of use is a real strength. It's extremely helpful for skipping over dangerous raid mechanics, such as on Artificer Xy'mox and Desaugne. As a result, Night Fae is a decent, usable raid Covenant that offers a lot of utility and defensive value, but that comes at the expense of losing some single-target damage.
Venthyr
Venthyr is incredibly simple. You use
陨落僧众
, it summons adds that do damage and heal. No interaction whatsoever. But is it good? Yeah, it's not bad.
陨落僧众
deals competitive burst damage at the start of a fight, but its longer cooldown means that as fights drag on, it tends to fall further and further behind the competition. When using
罪邪古训
, you can consistently have shorter cooldowns than Kyrian, but the burst windows won't be as large. In order to be competitive, you'll need to squeeze out extra casts of
陨落僧众
(as compared to
精序兵戈
).
暗影之门
is the other mobility Covenant skill, and while it offers more control, it takes more time to use effectively. As a result, it's generally an inferior alternative to
灵魂变形
, but it's reasonably comparable.
Brewmaster Monk Mythic+ Covenant Analysis
Brewmaster Covenant priorities shift a little bit when comparing Mythic+ and raid.
精序兵戈
is extremely consistent, effectively performing the same in both environments. It's a great offensive cooldown that provides massive burst damage. It's the best.
骨尘酒
is very competitive with
精序兵戈
in terms of damage added, and it is, arguably,
slightly
superior from a defensive perspective. The value and cooldown of Bonedust Brew doesn't technically change from raid to Mythic+, but the duration and severity of pulls does. Bonedust Brew is definitely not as good as
精序兵戈
in terms of providing a big burst damage cooldown, but it is available much more often (~30s cooldown as opposed to ~80-120 seconds). Consistency is more important than raw power in Mythic+, and the cooldown of Bonedust Brew is consistently around 30 seconds, so it's a reliable choice. It doesn't have the same offensive potential, but it does offer defensive consistency, and that makes it a safe option for Mythic+. It's a good choice.
妖魂踏
gains a lot of value in Mythic+ thanks to the increased value of tank damage in a 5-man setting, and not being punished by movement as often. The defensive bonuses and healing have more impact in smaller group settings, and Night Fae Monk feels extremely tanky in Mythic+. Losing the consistent burst damage cooldown of Kyrian is unfortunate, but Night Fae Monk is a really, really tanky choice that handles itself pretty well in Mythic+!
陨落僧众
is pretty underwhelming on its own. You press it, some red Monk ghosts deal damage, whatever. When you factor in the massive cooldown reduction from
罪邪古训
, the value goes up substantially in Mythic+. Being able to have
陨落僧众
available for nearly every pull is really nice. It won't help you generate threat, but it will provide lots of consistent bursts of damage throughout a run. That's good!
No matter which Covenant you choose, enjoy it!
