A core choice at the start of your journey in the Shadowlands will have you decide where your allegiance lies; would you rather support the Kyrian of Bastion, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, the Night Fae of Ardenweald, or the Venthyr of Revendreth?
Choosing a covenant is the most important decision your character will make in Shadowlands, as the covenant abilities and soulbinds will significantly impact your spec's gameplay and performance. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story in different paths.

Best Blood Death Knight Covenants for Raiding
Castle Nathria has an abundance of stationary, non-single target fights with plenty of debuffs you can purge with

. In fact, there is only
one
boss where this is not true. As a result,
Kyrian
is an extremely appealing value proposition, especially due to
Pelagos
' Soulbind tree buffing it even further. Early Soulbinds guarantee a large mastery proc through

, easy access to a finesse conduit for interrupt fights, along with very early access to a potency conduit, and a tree with no real choice with any drawback.

was changes from 3% versatility to 3% magic damage reduction, which in itself isn't
really bad
, but a bit of a nerf. There may also be situations where
Kleia
shows up due to her immunity potential through

and party healing through

, but we'll have to wait and see whether anything else gets whitelisted in Nathria.
This, however, isn't the be-all, end-all, and some fights may specifically showcase or highlight certain abilities. For instance, there is some play potential as Venthyr on Denathrius due to
暗影之门
and an
abundance
of adds in melee range, and the grip aspect of
憎恶附肢
can be situationally amazing on Kael'thas. As such, no choice is entirely wasted, although some are dramatically better than others.
Best Blood Death Knight Covenants for Mythic+
Mythic+ throws the choice of Covenants on its head with a split in key level. In higher keys (typically, the highest doable at the moment), the value of Runic Power skyrockets - naturally - since you are both taking more damage (thus increasing the value a
灵界打击
has in terms of healing throughput), and have a lower time face-tanking, with longer periods of kiting in between. This is the
ideal
situation for
云集之雾
: get in, drop your damage and get a
real
boost in RP during it, get out. The Soulbinds are also appealing, with
Draven
's
岩石效命
and
持续阴霾
providing a noticeable amount of EHP for those that require it, and
Nadjia
providing a more offensive choice through
兴奋追猎者
and
精心准备
.
However, it is worth noting that every Covenant has its opportunity to shine in Shadowlands dungeons. There is a plethora of debuffs you can negate by being Kyrian, a dizzying array of skips possible with two of the four Covenants, and bonuses in each dungeon based on a given Covenant, to be shared with your group.

Blood Death Knight Raiding Covenant Analysis
Kyrian
Due to the raid design, and the fact that some abilities naturally play towards the strength of the cleansing effect provided by

(at least on beta), there already is a value proposition in being able to negate mechanics from it. Even though a large amount of them were whitelisted and can now only be dropped with proper immunities, there are still a handful left that may turn the tide. In particular,

(Denathrius' tank swap mechanic) may prove to be worth watching out for.
In addition to this,

provides a tremendous amount of damage on low target counts, with the ability to spread it by hitting the target affected by it with

or
骨髓分裂
, which you will be doing naturally, as they are part of your basic rotation.
As if this value proposition wasn't strong enough, early in the tier, you will find both a temporary debuff immunity in Kleia's
晋升之瓶
, or a
lot
of stats and healing in Pelagos'
耐心之瓶
and
战斗冥想
. Due to nerfs,

was changed to magic resist, but... well, frankly, it's still valuable (there happens to be a lot of that in various encounters in Castle Nathria), and the other soulbinds are still so far behind the trait could've been removed entirely and not change the decision.
What more should I add? It's a super solid value proposition with very few drawbacks, and more importantly, it is solid from day one, unlike some of the competition.
Venthyr
Your Covenant Ability as a Venthyr is a feast-or-famine Covenant Ability:

Dramatically
better the more targets there are (linear scaling up to 5 targets including RP generation, with diminishing returns beyond that up to 20 targets), whilst somewhat lackluster on single-target - and since you cannot switch out of it, you're forced to live with both the good times, and the bad times.
Fortunately for us, there are only three single-target fights (Shriekwing, Sludgefist, and Xy'mox), which means we can at least get more value out of it than we would otherwise. Similarly, the signature ability allows you to relatively quickly move to other places on a short cooldown, something a few encounters test.
The Soulbinds the Venthyr Covenant offers are a mixed bag of a pure defense-oriented Draven, with traits such as
持续阴霾
and
岩石效命
(functioning very similar - and multiplicatively with -
浮空城意志
), or Nadjia with generic throughput amplifying the effect of your runeforges and granting you a small bloodlust on a ~90s cooldown through
兴奋追猎者
.
It's... difficult to fully gauge the value. On one hand, it's not a
total
loss. On the other, it is weaker unless you are specifically after EHP.
Night Fae
With the rework,
消亡之债
tests your ability to perform your rotation optimally while reserving the last GCD of it for Heart Strike. You'll find most bosses to be relatively stationary, with very predictable movement patterns, during which you will likely drop the buff. Even with that, it is a good consistent option, and the signature ability (
灵魂变形
) functions as a small travel form with a self-heal through
不休不疲
if needed.
The Soulbinds are also a mixed bag. We find ourselves with an early choice between what is a near-pure EHP Soulbind in the form of Niya, with
林地复兴
(note: 2 stacks per cast) providing some mastery and max HP on near-100% uptime, Korayn with
荒猎团战术
providing some extra damage, and Dreamweaver providing a very clunky self-rez that also happens to drop your threat during it in the form of
灵茧守护者
.
Later on in progression, Niya starts to properly shine offensively on targets that can be slowed (through
尼娅的工具:锉刀
, providing a
ridiculous
amount of damage) or interrupted (through
尼娅的工具:毒药
, again, providing a ridiculous amount of damage), while Korayn picks up a constant 3% damage reduction through
勇面敌人
.
As a result, it is also not a total loss, but it is objectively worse than Kyrian, and a significantly more intensive Covenant Ability to manage.
Necrolord
The Necrolord ability,
憎恶附肢
, allows you to do some damage to five nearby enemies every second for 12 seconds, and will pull an enemy further than 8 yards away from you if there is one. On use, 6 seconds in, and when it fades, you gain 3
白骨之盾
charges. The grip in particular needs some explanations as to its behavior, as it is not obvious:
The grip can only occur on a target further than 8 yards away and in combat with you.
憎恶附肢
, while strong, is only marginally stronger in damage than
云集之雾
, has double the cooldown, and does not provide the additional RP or dodge chance
Finally, the grip has been changed to only grip the same target once every four seconds for PvP reasons. This drastically hampers its usability without a slow on top in order to use it to negate fixated mobs. Fortunately, we have
枯萎凋零
, but that amounts to layering two spells to achieve something.
The eleventh-hour rework to this ability in the form of periodic
白骨之盾
charges is nice, but complicates things massively. Due to its cooldown being exactly the same as
符文刃舞
, you will always have contention issues on the opener and every 2 minutes. In addition to this, it is very likely that at least part of the last 3 charges will be wasted.
Offensively, it provides a lot of damage, though, albeit not much more than Venthyr even with the conduit, and
云集之雾
is not hardcapped to 5 targets, whereas this is.
The Soulbinds the Covenant offers are also relatively lackluster, with the most notable trait being an occasional absorb (
乌兹的和谐覆层
), and a trait that provides mastery when using
血肉铸造
near certain corpses, defensively. Offensively,
锯齿护肩
on Heirmir provides quite a large amount of damage, but is not enough to offset the base loss in picking
憎恶附肢
over
云集之雾
, whilst Emeni's
身先士卒
is a victim of cross-class tuning: most Necrolord abilities for other classes have a much shorter cooldown (with an extreme
死亡飞轮
and
激变蜂群
being 45s cooldown), and as such, since this trait is not scaled on that, we get the short end of the stick due to having a nearly 3x longer cooldown but the same bonus.
Speaking of, the signature ability,
血肉铸造
, whilst
very
interesting on paper, is hampered by one key issue: it requires you to channel for four seconds (and be stationary during it unless you have picked Emeni as your Soulbind). This means that you are effectively rooted in place and unable to do anything due to having to channel an
extremely
long spell, to get a relatively measly absorb. It's great between pulls, but it is strictly that: you use it during periods of downtime.
Blood Death Knight Mythic+ Covenant Analysis
The choices do not change; check the Raiding paragraph for a description.
All dungeons have multi-target pull opportunities (even on bosses!), plenty of debuffs to immune, plenty of places where you can use and abuse both Kleia and Pelagos.
In high Mythic+ key levels (typically near page one of raider.io), you will find that the value each point of Runic Power has dramatically increases due to the damage taken increasing exponentially. This makes Venthyr (particularly when you consider
岩石效命
on top!) massively better, but this is a niche pick.
Whatever you decide to pick, godspeed, and don't forget to start your swap quest, just in case, to save yourself a week.
