A core choice at the start of your journey in the Shadowlands will have you decide where your allegiance lies; would you rather support the Kyrian of Bastion, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, the Night Fae of Ardenweald, or the Venthyr of Revendreth?
While the decision of your Covenant is impactful, it is a choice that can be changed quickly once you reach Shadowlands' endgame. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story in different paths.
In this Shadowlands guide, we will help you choose the right covenant for your playstyle, based on how much they impact your performance as a Blood Death Knight, updated for .

About the Authors
This guide has been written by Panthea, who raids in

Acherus Death Knight community
, where they answer questions regarding death knights and discuss class and encounter strategies.
Best Covenants for Blood Death Knights
As a quick recap, we've created the table below to highlight the notable differences between Covenants. Don't hesitate to click the headers to go to their respective guides!
Even though some covenants may not be displayed in these tables,
all of them are within player error margin of each other
. Typically, for instance, even though Night Fae is better on simulations, it is not by enough to justify defaulting to it and the assumptions of massively superior knowledge of Blood Death Knight and encounter constraints make it a choice that may not be for everyone.

Necrolord is
overall
stronger than the other covenants for everything
except
Rygelon, where using
憎恶附肢
effectively wipes you, but is also
invaluable
for the
安度因·乌瑞恩
encounter. Aiding Anduin in a gauntlet with grippable mobs that need to be kept away from the center of the room grants the raid
意志之力
, which, if done well, is a
200%
damage increase for the entire raid and
90%
damage reduction. It is literally
the
covenant you have to level for this raid, purely because of this fight.
As a result, we strongly recommend you to have Necrolord ready, and either Night Fae or Kyrian for fights where those might pull ahead. Night Fae excels on Skolex and Xy'mox (as long as you have DPS DKs to grip adds in), while Kyrian is within player skill of the other options everywhere and pulls ahead on Prototype Pantheon once double legendaries are available.
For Mythic+ specifically,
all four covenants are once again viable
and you can expect them all in top key leaderboards. If you are doing a certain dungeon,
unlocking its dungeon covenant bonus trumps personal preference or simulations
! (Particularly the Necrolord Plaguefall and Theater of Pain bonuses. There is nothing quite like 3 30% haste buffs stacking multiplicatively with one another)
In light of the hotfixes that happened on March 11th, we've revised our advice and would strongly recommend either Necrolord, Kyrian or Night Fae. On paper, Night Fae is the highest performing covenant, but is also the hardest to play optimally in keys. Necrolord is a lot more plug-and-play, perhaps even more so than Venthyr once you have our 4-piece set bonus. Kyrian really shines once double legendaries are available.

Strengths & Weaknesses in More Detail
Each and every covenant for blood death knight works differently, and in a lot of cases, the toolkit they provide will be what makes or breaks your choice. We decided to highlight, in detail, the things you should be aware of about each covenant below:

Covenant Choice Changes for Patch 9.2 for Blood Death Knights
9.2 brings a small number of chances reshuffling the covenant meta slightly, although the main outcome is still the same: all of them are within range of each other, and this will likely be trumped by personal player skill and encounter mechanics.
The addition of the new tier set, unfortunately, had very little impact on covenant balance. Similarily, the buffs to 3 of the four covenant legendaries and the possibility to equip them alongside regular legendaries has pushed Night Fae further, but only in ideal circumstances and with a significant player skill requirement.
The addition of Memory of Unity and the ability to equip a covenant legendary permanently did not change this much, either. Night Fae were the real winners, and Venthyr the decisive weakest addition, but not by enough to declare a covenant to be worth avoiding or even considering as inferior to the rest. As weird as it sounds, the Night Fae legendary
蔓延转移
rewards proper play but also shores up an existing weakness compared to the other covenant choices.
Best Blood Death Knight Covenants for Raiding
The covenant situation for raiding has not really seen a change. If you're interested in throughput and some niche utility on fights where there is some movement, Kyrian should be your choice. Its versatility and strength makes it a very good default choice. Night Fae is technically superior on stationary fights, or fights where permanent Damage Reduction matters (something we actually have this raid!).
This, however, isn't the be-all, end-all, and some fights may specifically showcase or highlight certain abilities and make you consider swapping. As a rule of thumb, since Necrolord has the most impactful utility choice (a second pseudo mass grip), we recommend making sure you can flex into that choice as well. We've collected a list of covenant preferences in Sepublcher of the First Ones here:
Encounter
Covenant
Vigilant Guardian
Any
Skolex
Night Fae
Artificer Xy'mox
Any (Slight Necrolord advantage if only DK)
Dausegne
Any
Prototype Pantheon
Any
Lihuvim
Any
Halondrus
Any
Anduin Wrynn
Necrolord
Lords of Dread
Any (slight Necrolord advantage)
Rygelon
Not Necrolord!
The Jailer
Any
These are just cases where a certain covenant has a
noticeable
potential advantage. Taking this potential and turning it into a definite advantage remains in the hand of the player (i.e. you), and displaying a covenant you do not know, even if it is potentially better, will likely lead to a loss.
For more information on each fight and how to leverage the tactical advantages mentioned above, don't hesitate to check out our raid page!
Blood Death Knight Sepulcher of the First Ones Guide
Best Blood Death Knight Covenants for Mythic+
Thanks to the changes coming that came in 9.1.5, and that are exacerbated further by the addition of double legendaries, the choice of covenant in mythic+ is no longer a static affair, but something you may want to pay closer attention to due to the presence of the dungeon bonuses you were previously bringing dedicated players for.
Blood death knights happen to have four
extremely
competitive options for Mythic+, with world-level keys being completed last season as all four of them. As a result, it will be relatively uncommon for you to have to play it (unless you want to, of course! It is still more than viable for any key level). As such, you have two options:
If you are in a
dedicated pushing group
, ask your team members which covenant you are missing, and play this in dungeons where you need it. The table at the start of this page has reminders for all the dungeons. In every other dungeon, your choice is free!
If you are pugging, the rules are the same - except that in this case it is preferable for you to be ready to play either Necrolord or Venthyr, as those tend to be the two least prevalent covenants in 9.2 and their bonuses are very impactful
For these reasons, we recommend that you bring at the very least Necrolord and Venthyr to Renown 80, and Kyrian or Night Fae if you can spare the additional time. None of this has to be done immediately, but we have plenty of guides for efficient renown farming should you wish to go faster!
In an optimally coordinated group, at the highest level of keys and with both the covenant legendary and regular legendary equipped, Night Fae is arguably the most effective option, but it does require some support and synergy in more than one way. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a challenge, the option - and the rewards - are there!
Blood Death Knight Covenant Popularity
Below you can see the data on what are the most picked Covenants for Blood Death Knights. This data updates automatically and comes directly from Blizzard's API.
Blood Death Knight Raiding Covenant Analysis
Kyrian
Just like Sanctum of Domination, Sepulcher of the First Ones has most of its cleansable abilities whitelisted to not work with
召唤执事者
, in a move that surprised absolutely nobody. That does not mean the phial is useless, since it's effectively an additional health potion (something that can save pulls), but its value is lower than previous tier.
That said,
失格者之梏
provides a tremendous amount of damage on low target counts, with the ability to spread it by hitting the target affected by it with
心脏打击
or
骨髓分裂
, which you will be doing naturally, as they are part of your basic rotation.
What more should I add? It's a super solid value proposition with very few drawbacks. Does big dam, brings good tools, and situationally shines in terms of utility.
Venthyr
Your Covenant Ability as a Venthyr is a feast-or-famine Covenant Ability:
云集之雾
.
Dramatically
better the more targets there are (linear scaling up to 5 targets including RP generation, with diminishing returns beyond that up to 20 targets), whilst somewhat lackluster on single-target - and since you cannot switch out of it, you're forced to live with both the good times, and the bad times.
Sepulcher of the First Ones, unfortunately, sees very little possibility for this ability to shine, as most bosses have few - if any - adds, and the one fight with them requires you to grip them.
暗影之门
also has fewer opportunities to shine, the strongest being maybe Xy'mox, but it works more as a gimmick than anything else.
The Soulbinds the Venthyr Covenant offers are a mixed bag of a pure defense-oriented Draven, with traits such as
持续阴霾
and
岩石效命
(functioning very similar - and multiplicatively with -
浮空城意志
), or Nadjia with generic throughput amplifying the effect of your runeforges and granting you a small bloodlust on a ~90s cooldown through
兴奋追猎者
.
Night Fae
With the rework,
消亡之债
tests your ability to perform your rotation optimally while reserving the last GCD of it for
心脏打击
. You'll find most bosses to be relatively stationary, with very predictable movement patterns, during which you will likely drop the buff. Even with that, it is a good consistent option, and the signature ability (
灵魂变形
) functions as a small travel form with a self-heal through
不休不疲
if needed. There is a blink associated, which can be extremely good on some mechanics in Sepulcher of the First Ones, at least situationally.
The Soulbinds are also a mixed bag. We find ourselves with an early choice between what is a near-pure EHP Soulbind in the form of Niya, with
林地复兴
(note: 2 stacks per cast) providing some mastery and max HP on near-100% uptime, Korayn with
荒猎团战术
providing some extra damage, and Dreamweaver providing a very clunky self-rez that also happens to drop your threat during it in the form of
灵茧守护者
.
Later on in progression, Niya starts to properly shine offensively on targets (through
尼娅的工具:锉刀
, providing a
ridiculous
amount of damage) or interrupted (through
尼娅的工具:毒药
, again, providing a ridiculous amount of damage), while Korayn picks up a constant 3% damage reduction through
勇面敌人
.
As a result, Night Fae is a significantly more intensive Covenant Ability to manage - but the rewards for doing so are definitely there.
Necrolord
In terms of abilities,
憎恶附肢
and
血肉铸造
both have their time to shine in Sepulcher. The first is
invaluable
for the Anduin Wrynn encounter, and the second shines on a number of bosses with very telegraphed, very predictable tankbusters. It, unfortunately, is the lowest DPS value proposition of the set.
The Soulbinds the Covenant offers are also relatively lackluster, with the most notable trait being an occasional absorb (
乌兹的和谐覆层
), and a trait that provides mastery when using
血肉铸造
near certain corpses, defensively. Offensively,
锯齿护肩
on Heirmir provides quite a large amount of damage, particularly in execute.
Speaking of, the signature ability,
血肉铸造
, whilst
very
interesting on paper, is hampered by one key issue: it requires you to channel for three seconds (and be stationary during it unless you have picked Emeni as your Soulbind). While you do gain 20% damage reduction during this channel, and gain a very large absorb shield doing so, it is still three seconds you could have spent better. Emeni sort of rewards you with damage when you do, reducing this cost slightly.
Blood Death Knight Mythic+ Covenant Analysis
The choices do not change; check the Raiding paragraph for a description.
All dungeons have multi-target pull opportunities (even on bosses!), plenty of debuffs to immune, plenty of places where you can use and abuse both Mikanikos and Pelagos.
In high Mythic+ key levels (typically near page one of raider.io), you will find that the value each point of Runic Power has dramatically increases due to the damage taken increasing exponentially. This makes Venthyr (particularly when you consider
岩石效命
on top!) and Night Fae (once the second legendary is unlocked) massively better, but this is a niche pick, and overall, if a covenant choice brings you an additional dungeon bonus, it is likely worth it. We're one of the few specs not really bothered by an overwhelmingly dominant covenant, so we're free to pick and fill as we see fit.
Whatever you decide to pick, godspeed! My only closing advice is, if you have the time, to go and try the other options out. Now that covenant swapping is mostly free, there has rarely been a better time to go and dip your toes in other covenant sanctums.

Hey,
I plan to do maximum HC raiding and M+ up to 10. I generally find mythic plus to be boring.
What covenant should I go in this case? Thank you!

Necrolord DKs gain Lead by Example for 20 seconds after you activate Abomination Limb
the formula for Lead by Example is 10 sec duration per 1 min of the CD for your class ability, warlocks get it for 5 seconds as ours is a 45 second cooldown

I really like necrolord for blood in M+, it kinda forces you to take Emeni w/the trait that allows you to FC on the move but that combined with Lead by example and the new capstone trait really make up for alot of the "you could have spent this 3 seconds better".
a 3 second moving cast w/a 40% health shield + 20% DMG reduction + a thorns effect that heals AOE when it pops. Thats a HUGE amount of utility stacked into one button.
the only issue i have is if you cast abom-limb and then fleshcraft it will channel for like 0.1 seconds and just be canceled by Abom-limb. Seems like a bug
