What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Major Essences
Minor Essences
Raiding
(Great on all encounters when you have 2-3x
)
(Alternative for single target, weak on high movement)
(AoE)
(if not using as a major)
(fill in if you're missing any of the above)
Mythic+
(good for organized groups where pulls are meticulously planned out)
(better for PUGs or groups just winging it, but can also be a top choice for Fortified weeks)
(if you don't have the above, there's always the meme-beam)
(loses value on trash due to target swaps, but very good for Tyrannical bosses)
(fill in for Fortified weeks or if missing any of the above)
Horrific Visions
(great for bursting down the deadly mini bosses and elites)
(very nice for the AoE stun and the chance to instantly kill enemies)
(alternative that may work better if doing them in a group)
(extra damage on all the aberrations)
Reference the Raid Tips and Mythic+ pages of the guide for more information on essences for each activity.
Beast Mastery Hunter Essence Simulations
We have comparative simulations for each of the different Major and Minor essence powers, courtesy of SimulationCraft, Bloodmallet, and other class tools. Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
.
Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Beast Mastery Hunter Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of notable Top Tier, Mid Tier, and Bottom or strictly Situational Tier Major Essences you should consider using when playing a Beast Mastery Hunter.

Use on:
Raids, Mythic+
This is the only Major Power essence that is entirely passive. It has a chance to proc your
for 7 seconds. If you have the
Azerite trait, the Mastery portion will also activate for those 7 seconds, and this is what adds most of the value. When you are missing this trait, you will get very little benefit from this essence. The proc is pretty random but it was buffed in patch 8.3, making it a much more desirable essence.
Note: If you have 3x
traits, this is likely to be your best choice in nearly every situation.
The Minor Power is just a flat cooldown reduction to Aspect of the Wild.
Effect on gameplay
You should be careful to not manually activate
during a random proc as doing so will NOT add the full 20 seconds to the current buff, it will simply reset it to 20 seconds -- it's best to wait for the proc to finish, then manually activate. Other than that, pray for procs.

Single target bosses
This Major essence has received a significant buff in patch 8.3, and is now one of the best overall essences for Beast Mastery. It scales well with multiple people in your raid or group using it, but even if you're the only one rocking it, it's still decent.
Effect on gameplay
Using this essence is very simple. For the majority of situations, you simply use it on cooldown. The only other consideration is movement. You want to be able to stay near your dropped shards for the full 18 seconds to get the most out of it. For high movement fights, there are better options. Vision of Perfection tends to give you about the same benefit for less effort.

Use on:
Burst damage, general use
This essence has burst potential, but the window is very short. The biggestburst window is only 5 seconds, which only gives you a few GCDs to work with. Additionally, it only has a 12-yard range which means you'll have to go out of your way to run in close and use it properly. That being said, this is one of the better all-around essences in dungeons or AoE raid fights.
The Minor Power provides a ramping crit buff that culminates in a big haste buff. Pet attacks and auto attacks do not contribute, so it can sometimes take a while to build up 40 stacks. This is not necessarily a bad thing since Beast Mastery values that crit so much.
Effect on gameplay
In most situations, you want this stacked with your two major cooldowns, Bestial Wrath and Aspect of the Wild (cast both of them before Blood of the Enemy).

Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Use on:
Single target, raiding
This essence used to be top for single target, but it received several nerfs in patch 8.3. It's still pretty good, just no longer the best.
Summons a temporary elemental pet that deals damage and buffs you once you unlock rank 3. While the pet is active, all your damage on the primary target is increased by 3% and you also gain up to 10% haste (at rank 3). Best suited for single target raid boss fights or when burst damage is required. This pet's damage is NOT buffed by your Mastery stat.
The Minor Power causes you to randomly fire azerite shards, which also buff your damage to the target by 3% for 6 seconds (at rank 3). Total uptime on the 3% damage buff (Major + Minor combined) is around 33%.
Effect on gameplay
In most cases, you'll want to hold onto it to stack it with both Bestial Wrath and Aspect of the Wild to give maximum benefit to the 3% damage and 10% haste buffs. With its 3-minute cooldown, you should have a pretty good idea of how many possible uses you will have on any given fight to see if it's worth delaying or not. For example, on a 5-minute fight you will only get 2 uses of it regardless, so there is a lot of freedom for when to use it.

Rank 4: Complete
.
Use on:
Mythic+, general use
Deals a huge amount of AoE burst damage, nice option for Mythic+ or multi-target boss fights. Has fallen out of favor a little bit in 8.3 because there are simply better options. This essence has more value when you are starting out and don't yet have optimal gear.
Effect on gameplay
In a AoE situation, be sure to trigger your Beast Cleave (and refresh Frenzy) just before casting this to minimize downtime. In single target, it would also be best that Kill Command is on cooldown before using.
This ability only has a 30-yard range
. Don't use it when you're too far away from the enemies, and don't use it so close that you may accidentally pull another pack behind the one you are engaged with.

Use on:
Single target, general use
This is very similar to Crucible of Flames, but instead of having 2 charges it has cooldown reductions when you use it above 80% and below 20% target health, as well as a cooldown reset if it deals a killing blow.
The Major power isn't that special, but the Minor power will be essential.
Effect on gameplay
Use it on cooldown.

Use on:
Single target, general use
A consistent single target DPS increase and very easy to get since the only requirement is Heart of Azerorth levels.
The Minor Power provides additional single target damage.
Effect on gameplay
At rank 1 or 2, you want to use this as close to cooldown as possible, but it is low priority: you only want to use it when Kill Command and Chimaera Shot are on cooldown. At rank 3+, the second charge gives you more freedom when to use it, but make sure you wait at least 6 seconds between casts since the secondary DoT effect does not fully stack. You generally want to use it outside of Bestial Wrath windows.

Rank 3: Exalted, purchase for 40

Rank 4: Rustbolt Resistance Paragon cache.
Use on:
Sustained Multi-target, Mythic+
Another AoE essence, this one is not nearly as bursty as the Focusing Iris, but it has a shorter cooldown and is instant cast which makes it significantly easier to use. It can also give you a damage buff if an enemy dies inside of it. It also has an interesting effect where any non-boss enemy hit by it has a low chance to be instantly killed. This includes mobs in Mythic+!
As a bonus, the Minor Power also deals some extra AoE damage. When you put Major + Minor together you get a solid option for any kind of multi-target scenario. The Minor power by itself is a great option for Mythic+ dungeons.
Effect on gameplay
This is not buffed by your major cooldowns, so essentially use it as often as possible. In a dungeon setting, it should be available for every major pull. You should aim to use it when one of the mobs will die within 6 seconds so that you get the 10% damage buff. When facing a single target boss, this would be a low priority cast, behind both Kill Command and Chimaera Shot.
Note:
These are not likely to be competitive for Beast Mastery in a PVE setting, except for the noted situational possibilities.
NEW 8.3

Rank 4:

Use on:
Buffing your allies Essence damage
This is about as situational as an essence can get. There are many possible strategies that could be developed to take advantage of this. Imagine half a dozen raid members with Focusing Iris all getting buffed by this essence to burst down a group of adds. I'm sure strategies such as this will develop.
The Minor power is also centered around buffing your party members.
Effect on gameplay
Strategies will need to be developed by your raid leader to fully take advantage of this.

Use on:
Gain the ability to use essences from other roles
Another highly situational essence. It allows you to copy the Major essence from anyone, even if its a healing or tanking essence. I'm sure some interesting strategies will be developed for this, but it's really going to come down to your raid's particular strategy.
Effect on gameplay
Strategies will need to be developed by your raid leader to fully take advantage of this.

Rank 4: Nazjatar reputation Paragon cache.
Use on:
Single target, general use
Similar to Crucible of Flame in that it deals direct single target damage, but it's more restrictive. Its usage will depend entirely on the Minor Power because of its interaction with critical strike chance. Even though the cooldown is 45 seconds, you'll rarely get to use it that often because it's only worth using when the Minor Power is fully charged (which can sometimes take over a minute).
Crucible of Flames is generally preferable to this.
Effect on gameplay
You only want to use this when the Minor Power is fully charged and granting you 70% increased crit chance. You can use it on the pull if you want since it will be available by the time the Minor Power can fully charge up to 20 stacks again, although without the crit buff it's barely worth the GCD. The charge up mechanic has a RPPM component, so it can sometimes take over a minute to fully charge.

Use on:
After you've fully drained all Focus
There is no real world use for this essence (at least the Major portion) since you will never be able to spend all the extra Focus it generates without Focus capping. Beast Mastery already has a very high Focus regeneration rate. Avoid this one.
The Minor Power is also not that impressive since extra Focus just gives you a few extra Cobra Shots or Multi-Shots, which isn't super impactful.
Effect on gameplay
Gives you more Focus than you can realistically use. Not good.

Use on:

Activates
for use in all content, including PvE instances and out in the world with War Mode is turned off. The main benefit will be giving you a 4th PvP talent in PvP situations, but there could always be niche situations where the knockback is needed in PvE. You also gain some extra versatility when CCing or interrupting an enemy.
The Minor Power grants stacking Versatility, and it gives quite a lot at season 3 which gives it potential to be used in a Minor power slot.
Effect on gameplay
It's an extra crowd control option. There's no serious DPS benefit here.

Rank 3: Collect

Use on:
PvP or when a situational teleport is needed
It's hard to think of scenarios where this would be useful in PvE. A teleport is nice, but it's only up to 25 yards, and the damage component is not significant.
Beast Mastery Hunter Minor Essences
Three additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor alone.
NEW 8.3
Use on:
Single target, general use
This Minor essence deals a lot of damage (especially at rank 3), and has the added benefit of giving you +10 Corruption resistance. This is a must have for pretty much every situation.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
Single target, general use
While the Major Power is focused on AoE damage, the Minor Power here benefits single target as well. At rank 3, this gives you a consistent amount of haste on a single target. When swapping targets, there will be a short delay before it ramps up to full power. This gains most of its strength at rank 2, so it's very easy to acquire by simply completing a M+7 dungeon in season 3.
Effect on gameplay
Limit your target swaps to only when necessary to not drop the Haste buff.
Use on:
General use
At rank 3, this is actually competitive since the Versatility buff is so consistent, but it does require a lot of rated PVP to unlock.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
General use
Nice to have for crit-focused Dance of Death builds. This is one of the better minor essences in Mythic+.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
Mythic+, also useful in raiding with multiple Primal Instincts
Aspect of the Wild isn't a very potent cooldown on its own, so without
traits you don't really want to even consider using this. But if you have 2+ Primal Instincts traits you will get a lot of mileage out of this in Mythic+. With 3x Primal Instincts, it's a no brainer.
(rank 3 and if 5+ people in your group use this essence)
Use on:
General use in all types of content
This Minor power essence is only good on its own if multiple people in your group are using it (and everyone is at rank 3) -- ideally 4+ other people, and they should be ranged/healers so you are close enough to benefit. This is because everyone using this essence shares the buffs from the shards.
If you're in a situation where you aren't using the Major Worldvein essence, there are probably few scenarios where you would be using this in a Minor slot.
Effect on gameplay
You'll want a WeakAura to track the stacks of this buff so you can tell when you've moved too far away from the shards.
NEW 8.3
Use on:
Raid
This essence is quite good as long as you can get a high uptime on it. If you can get 80% uptime or more, it is a good choice, and a nice fill-in if you don't have Conflict and Strife. However, if no one in your group is using a low cooldown Major essence, the uptime won't be great. But if someone in your group is using Crucible of Flames this can have a very high uptime.
Effect on gameplay
The Corruption resistance could be of some value, but you probably already get it from Breath of the Dying.
Use on:
Single target
If you aren't using the Major Power, the Minor Power is still useful to have for pure single target (especially at rank 3). The fire damage DoT has a relatively high proc rate and can stack at rank 3 for a consistent single target increase.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
Single target, raiding
This Minor Power does less raw damage than Crucible of Flame, but it has the added benefit of giving you a 3% damage buff on the target when it procs. On a single target, you can count on roughly 20-25% uptime on this damage buff.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
Mythic+, AoE damage
This is the only Minor Power that deals direct AoE damage so it will be powerful for Mythic+ or encounters with multiple targets. Once you have 2 minor slots unlocked, this could be a go-to Essence for Fortified weeks in Mythic+.
Effect on gameplay
None, it's passive.
Use on:
General use
On average, it takes 60-70 seconds to build this up to 20 stacks to gain the 70% critical strike chance buff for 6 seconds (at rank 3). Since Barbed Shot cannot crit, its ticks will provide a reliable source of stacks, but the stacks are still limited by the 20 RPPM.
If the crit buff happens during your cooldowns, it can be very impactful. The lack of control and the size of the window limits its usefulness. Also, the fact that it has a negative synergy with the crit stat reduces its effectiveness. Stacks will remain briefly when out of combat but they do disappear eventually.
Effect on gameplay
You can use a WeakAura to track the stacks, but you should be cautious about delaying abilities to guarantee crits. You may think it's a good idea to hold off on Kill Command when you're at 18 or 19 stacks so that you can guarantee a crit, but in practice it can take 5+ seconds to get those final stacks due to the RPPM procs, which means your delay could do more harm than good.
NEW 8.3
Use on:
Buffing your allies and getting extra Corruption resistance
This if fairly weak, but if you are in dire need of Corruption resistance because you got a really nice bonus, there is a possibility it could be worth it -- but it would really be an outside case.
Effect on gameplay
The cooldown reduction is very minor (only about 4 seconds off your essence cooldown per minute), but the Corruption resistance could be valuable.
Use on:
General use
The extra Focus is of little benefit to Beast Mastery, and the Versatility buff at rank 3is not very powerful.
Effect on gameplay
You'll have a bit more Focus to play with, which just means a few extra Cobra Shots or Multi-Shots.
Use on:
PvP or high movement
It's not always practical to move in such big increments during a raid or dungeon. You're likely to die to a mechanic trying to keep this buff up.
(if using it solo)
Use on:
General use in all types of content
While this Minor power is listed as top tier if you have multiple people using it, it's not very good if using it solo or with 1 or 2 other people. There's just not enough uptime to compete with other buffs, especially when you factor in having to move away from the shards.
Effect on gameplay
You'll want a WeakAura to track the stacks of this buff so you can tell when you've moved too far away from the shards.

Beast Mastery has enough spare GCDs that using this essence has little to no effect on our regular rotation.
I sense a small, very well hidden sarcasm. Is it just me?
Btw, thank you very much Bendak, this overview is exactly what I've been waiting for. You're doing a good job.

With the
Crucible of Flames
being the recommended Essence for BM Hunter it looks like Versatility is a big stat for dealing damage but i do not see any of the guides suggesting getting more versatility. so is it that even with these procs versatility is still not worth stacking?
Rank 1: Blast your target with a ball of concentrated flame, dealing Fire damage to an enemy or healing an ally for .
Each cast of Concentrated Flame deals 100% increased damage or healing. This bonus resets after every third cast.
Rank 2: Blast your target with a ball of concentrated flame, dealing Fire damage to an enemy or healing an ally for , then burn the target for an additional 75% of the damage or healing done over 6 sec..
Each cast of Concentrated Flame deals 100% increased damage or healing. This bonus resets after every third cast.
Rank 3: Blast your target with a ball of concentrated flame, dealing Fire damage to an enemy or healing an ally for .

Where do you get the essences? I have had an open slot for a minor now for a while. I'm doing all manner of quests and more essence of any sort doesn't appear.
