A core choice at the start of your journey in the Shadowlands will have you decide where your allegiance lies; would you rather support the Kyrian of Bastion, the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, the Night Fae of Ardenweald, or the Venthyr of Revendreth?
Choosing a covenant is the most important decision your character will make in Shadowlands, as the covenant abilities and soulbinds will significantly impact your spec's gameplay and performance. Through this choice, your rotation changes, certain bonuses appear in dungeons for your entire group, and you are able to follow the story in different paths.
In this Shadowlands guide, we will help you choose the right covenant for your playstyle, based on how much they impact your performance as a Affliction Warlock, updated for .

Best Affliction Warlock Covenants for Raiding
Affliction Warlock is definitely in a unique position when it comes to choosing your Covenant in Shadowlands. After various tuning changes to the Covenant abilties, we're in a situation where most of our choice is going to come down to the utility of the Covenants' various abilties, rather than just the raw damage output of each unique ability you gain. In the current iteration of the game, it's looking to be like either
Kyrian
or
Night Fae
will be the best option, for a number of different reasons.
For
Kyrian
, not only is
碎魂奉纳
a strong DoT in its own right, it also applies as a damage modifier towards
灾难狂欢
on single target 100% of the time. However, in Castle Nathria, most fights with a couple of exceptions seem to be mostly single target fights, with many adds that spawn in during the duration of the fight. This opens up the secondary benefit of
碎魂奉纳
, gaining a full bar of soul shards whenever a target dies with the DoT on it, allowing for timed burst damage during or after adds. In addition to this, Pelagos seems strong for both early progression, where you get early access to a large mastery buff in
战斗冥想
, and in later tiers of progression you'll also have a nice versatility buff in
放下过去
.
For
Night Fae
, you'll gain most of the same DPS benefits as Kyrian with Pelagos, with an increase in mobility. In addition to
灵魂腐化
being an ability that holds its own against the other Covenant abilities, players who choose Night Fae also gain access to
灵魂变形
, a ridiculous movement cooldown that can help to fill one of warlock's biggest weaknesses in raiding in general.
Generally speaking, it seems that whichever Covenant you choose, you shouldn't be missing out on too much damage - it seems that, surprisingly, most of the Covenants are relatively well balanced in terms of damage output, with any outliers being well within a reasonable margin.
Best Affliction Warlock Covenants for Mythic+
Affliction Warlock in Mythic+ is an entirely different matter. Because of the nature of Affliction Warlock in multi-target situations, it's hard to fit in GCDs before you need to start reapplying DoTs, so it's very finnicky to fit another set of abilities into a rotation.

both seem to fit the same bill - small nukes on a medium cooldown that place a DoT on the targets they hit, which both increase the damage of
灾难狂欢
. However,
灵魂腐化
is capped at hitting 4 targets, and
灾祸降临
has been underwhelming in almost every iteration on beta to this day.
Once again,
碎魂奉纳
and
Kyrian
seem to be the big winner here. On boss fights,
碎魂奉纳
is, once again, a sizeable single target increase in the form of being a 100% uptime DoT and engine for
灾难狂欢
to do more damage. In addition to this, you can set up scenarios in large trash pulls where, once all of your DoTs are ready to go, you throw
碎魂奉纳
on a target that's about to die and get to spamming out those
灾难狂欢
s.

Affliction Warlock Covenant Analysis
Kyrian
What can we say about Kyrian that hasn't already been said? Across the board, tons of classes are flocking to Kyrian in early progression settings for a number of different reasons.
First and foremost, Pelagos seems to be one of the strongest soulbinds in the game for any class that likes mastery -

has been strong through the beta for Shadowlands, and remains strong even after a large number of nerfs. The ability to line this up with a bunch of shards to dump into
灾难狂欢
makes this invaluable as a pure damage choice for Affliction Warlocks.
Although it should be way more obvious, an often-missed on trait of Kyrian is the benefit that
召唤执事者
provides:
静谧之瓶
. Not only is it purely an extra health potion with its own cooldown that isn't shared with either your Healthstone or normal healing potion, but it also removes a large number of debuffs. This can even be further empowered later in the expansion if you choose to pair it with Kleia, for her
晋升之瓶
trait, making you immune to several types of debuffs after you use your Kyrian potion for 8 seconds.
The only major drawback to Kyrian is that you don't really get a good solution for snap movement like both Night Fae and Venthyr get, but it's not like warlock has had those abilities for years, so if you're a veteran of warlock that shouldn't be an issue for you.
Night Fae
Night Fae is honestly a pretty strong sleeper pick for Affliction Warlock - a lot of people aren't really giving Night Fae the look it deserves, purely because of how underwhelming
灵魂腐化
is as a Covenant ability. However, when you look at the strength in the soulbind trees, along with the ridiculous movement capabilities
灵魂变形
gives, the strengths are clear.
The first neat thing for Night Fae: all 3 soulbinds trees seem to be relatively strong.
Niya, the first available soulbind, is probably the most vanilla of the three. You gain access to
林地复兴
, which can not only randomly proc mastery, but is a guaranteed buff when you cast
灵魂腐化
, which you'll ideally have several Soul Shards stored up to cast
灾难狂欢
during. In addition to this, you gain a nice small hp regen buff during
灵魂变形
, and later on in the progression cycle, access to
尼娅的工具：毒药
, which is a stupid amount of damage when you have access to interrupting a target.
Dreamweaver, the second available soulbind, is the earliest access to your 2 Potency conduits in the game - you'll get them both by Renown 13, which is the first week of Mythic raiding, a huge boost for anyone going for high ranks in Castle Nathria. Not to forgotten, Dreamweaver also has access to a cheap Cheat Death, as well as a large haste buff when you cast
灵魂腐化
later on in progression.
Korayn has one of the strongest-looking base soulbind trees just based off of damage numbers alone. Although you won't be unlocking him for a decent amount of time, when you do unlock him,
荒猎团战术
is pretty much the perfect trait for any raider that focuses on Mythic progression - very often, most fights hinge on either the first or last phases being incredibly difficult, and this trait helps out with both of those.
Outside of the soulbind trees, you gain access to
灵魂变形
. It almost seems like disrespect to mention this after gushing over the soulbind trees, but to be honest,
灵魂变形
is almost enough to choose Night Fae on its own. Warlock has often been the subject of memes about being one of the worst classes in the game to deal with large amounts of movement;
灵魂变形
is a foil to all of that. In addition to being an instant blink, it also provides a 50% movement speed buff. I can think of a large number of scenarios I only would have dreamed of having this available to me on a warlock.
Venthyr
Venthyr is an interesting option - I can guarantee you if
灵魂变形
didn't exist, I'd probably be saying all the same things i said about that ability of
暗影之门
. It provides almost all the same benefits, but unfortunately, it has a cast time, making it only slightly worse than the Night Fae option. That being said, it's still a good answer to the mobility issues that warlocks have dealt with throughout the years, and should be treated as such.
Unfortunately for Venthyr and wannabe vampires alike,
灾祸降临
is just an underwhelming ability. The curse-applying aspect of it is really nothing more than a meme, because in most situations those curses won't really do much. In addition, the overall damage of the ability is poor. One small benefit is that the DoT portion of
灾祸降临
does apply to
灾难狂欢
damage, so it might have some good applications in AoE scenarios, but other than that I don't see much major upside.
The soulbind trees for Venthyr actually do have some nice strengths, providing some benefit for players are have their hearts set on playing Venthyr - for Nadjia, the introductory soulbind, you gain access to
兴奋追猎者
, which is essentially Blood of the Essence minor in a soulbind trait. It is as strong as it sounds. For those looking for a different flavor option, Theortar has access to
抚慰阴影
, which is a large mastery buff similar to
林地复兴
. Unfortunately, unlike
林地复兴
, it's only a random proc, meaning it's harder to set up for good damage scenarios.
Unfortunately, in the current tuning Venthyr just looks like it's not going to be quite as powerful as Night Fae or Venthyr for most content. That being said, there's definitely potential in a lot of the interactions - If a couple tuning passes go Venthyr's way, I wouldn't be surprised to see Affliction warlocks turning into vampires.
Necrolord
Well then - let's talk about Necrolord and their fall from grace.
Early on in the beta,
屠戮箭
was a hilariously strong ability - It buffed your next three
吸取灵魂
casts by between 200 and 400%, depending on the health of the target. This led to Affliction being one of the strongest execute classes in the game, because not only was
吸取灵魂
doing double damage below 20% health of any target, but it also had its damage buffed by more than 360% for 3 casts every 45 seconds.
Unfortunately, this interaction proved too strong, as
屠戮箭
was nerfed to only buff your next one
吸取灵魂
cast, and the percentage damage buff was more than halved. This has left Necrolord in nearly an unplayable state.
血肉铸造
is not strong enough of a secondary benefit on its own to play Necrolord like
灵魂变形
is for Night Fae. Even though some traits in the Necrolord soulbind trees are relatively strong, the lack of any real tangible strength from both the class Covenant ability and the general Covenant ability leaves Affliction warlocks without major reason to play Necrolord.

Not sure when things changed, but the main ability for Necrolord has been seriously modified suggesting a rethink of this guide.

While they nerfed Necrolord I’ve still had a ton of fun with a drain soul build and can’t wait for the raid to open so I can get that amazing lego. It may be worse damage wise but it feels a lot better and I feel like it flows better for my play style.
I always feel like someone who can properly play the class and covenant will always be better than someone who uses the “strongest” one.

I did a lot of reading and decided ( at first ) to go NightFae as it seemed the best for Locks,
Once I got there to speak to Lady MoonBerry, i thought nah this is too soppy, airy fairy for me,
I did some more reading then thought well i dont M+ or GuldRaid anymore, ( im older now since 2004 ) and have kids ) so im not that fussed if i dont have best DPS etc
So i went with something that looks cool and that i would enjoy, I went with NecroLords, as i felt it suited my Warlock,
The other reason going this way, i wanted to do something i would enjoy, not being pressured in to what the best convenant Should
be,
When I flew to Maldraxxus for the Sanctum quests, instantly i thought, ahh thats looks better,

How is it hat the Fae is the #1 choice for warlocks, and the Venthyr is the absolute worst, yet the Venthyr armor set and theme looks very much made for a warlock?
It looks like Blizzard really failed at this one.
I hope there's some way to at least get that transmog eventually. It looks really nice.
