What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Affliction Warlock Essence Simulations
We have comparative simulations for each of the different Major and Minor essence powers, courtesy of SimulationCraft, Bloodmallet, and other class tools. Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
.
Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Best Affliction Warlock Major Essences
Important notes about essences - You can only have Major Essence selected, however that Major Essence, when socketed in the middle socket, will also give you access to its minor power as well. Overall, with everything unlocked, you'll have access to one Major power, and three minor powers.
Condensed Life Force
Source: Azshara's Eternal Palace (click for details!)
Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18
.
Rank 3: Combine 27
.
Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
This is our strongest essence. This is a 3 minute cooldown Guardian who does a decent amount of damage. However, at rank 3, his attacks give 2% haste, stacking 5 times for a total of 10% haste. Pop this guy before you go into your Darkglare rotation, and it just makes your already formidable cooldown better.
The Crucible of Flame

Rank 1:
.
Rank 2: Neck level 54 and
.
Rank 3: Neck level 60 and
.
Rank 4: Neck level 70 and
.
This may seem like a weird choice, but as far as major traits go, affliction doesn't really have any gamebreaking essences outside of rank 3 Condensed Life Force that help its mechanics out at all. This Essence becomes quite good at rank 3, once you hit 60 neck level. By that time, the base damage of the essence from leveling your neck on top of the extra added damage from each consecutive use turns this into a solid damage choice. Think of it like Deathbolt; its a button you hit every 30 seconds that's just a significantly stronger Shadow Bolt.
Blood of the Enemy

Rank 1:

Rank 2:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 3:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 4:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
What an essence. For almost all of PTR testing, this essence was by far the best choice for almost every DPS class in the game. However, after many nerfs to both the minor and major traits, it's become almost unusable in its current state for Affliction. Nerfs to the passive stacking mechanic (from 25 stacks to 40 stacks to proc the buff) and the critical damage (35% for 15 seconds to 25% for 5 seconds) have made this an essence you can almost ignore the thought of having to farm the honor required.
All of that aside, 25% crit during your major damage event is still nothing to scoff at. You should consider using this essence in conjunction with your Summon Darkglare if you don't have access to rank 3 of either of the above essences.
Worldvein Resonance

Rank 1: Complete the weekly quest
/
.
Rank 2: Combine
from island expeditions.
Rank 3: Complete the mission chain starting with "A Disturbing Rumor".
Rank 4: Complete a specific
mission.
Buffed in 8.3, Worldvein Resonance now gives quadruple the main stat when the major active is used. At neck levels of 75 and upwards, this is around 4,000 main stat for 18 seconds every minute. This has the potential to be incredibly good. You'd still use this very similarly to before; mostly on cooldown, but definitely save a use for your darkglare.
Essence of the Focusing Iris

Rank 1: Complete a +4 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 2: Complete a +7 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 3: Combine 15
from the weekly cache.
Rank 4: Complete
.
Another not so exciting essence for affliction, this is essentially a laser beam on a 1.5 minute cooldown. It does a pretty decent amount of damage, and the minor trait for this essence is passive haste, which is great for affliction in general. Just use it on cooldown at the start of the fight after applying dots, then go into your first darkglare rotation. Imporant to note - this is a very good aoe essence, however, it general falls behind Condensed life force, especially once you hit rank 3 of that essence.
Vision of Perfection
Source: Operation Mechagon (click for details!)
Rank 1: Defeat King Mechagon.
Rank 2:
from King Mechagon and craft
.
Rank 3: Combine 4
, dropped by King Mechagon.
Rank 4: Obtain
.
This is the cooldown reduction/ free cooldown generator that everyone went crazy for when we first saw the essence system on PTR a couple months ago. Since then, it's been hit with several nerfs to the procrate, baseline cooldown reduction, and on-proc effects based around azerite power. The only world I see this essence being used is one of two situations - an RNG gated fight that needs an insane amount of procs to beat a ridiculous DPS check, or a world in which we can generate enough haste to use one
and spam out enough
s to get Darkglare down to a 2 minute cooldown, so that we can pair it with
. If this is possible, I would rank as by far the best minor trait for Affliction. Otherwise, probably not worth using.
Purification Protocol
Source: Rustbolt Resistance Reputation (click for details!)
Rank 1: Honored, purchase for 4
and 2
.
Rank 2: Revered, purchase for 20
and 10
.
Rank 3: Exalted, purchase for 40
and 10
.
Rank 4: Rustbolt Resistance Paragon cache.
This is a weird essence - as a major it's really not all that powerful, except for situations where you're only fighting abberations and you need that extra stun. Outside of this situation, I would probably never consider using the major essence.
Breath of the Dying
Source: Uldum Accord reputation (click for details!)
Rank 1: Intro quests for 8.3 Received after competiting your first Assault.
Rank 2: Combining 3
, a time gated item from weekly Horrific Visions.
Rank 3: Exalted with Uldum Accord.
Rank 4: Emissary boxes from Uldum Accord?
Not really sure where to throw this essence, since it should just about always be socketed into a minor slot, but this does have a use case for fights where you can constantly use it in execute. Similar to Crucible of Flame, this is an instant use damage ability, that gets its cooldown reduced when you use it on low hp targets, or high hp targets at higher ranks. However, for high end progression raiders, you're likely never going to see higher than rank 1 of this essence.

Unfortunately, the active trait for this essence doesn't really work well for Affliction in the slightest. Extra shard generation at any point in the rotation isn't worth losing the damage from some of the better major traits.
The Unbound Force

Rank 4: Nazjatar reputation Paragon cache.
This is a sad relic of PTR balancing gone wrong. Unfortunately, the major essence never saw any real use because it's kind of a joke to use. The only real thing to write home about was the minor trait, which gave you a stack of the unbound force debuff whenever you failed to crit. Once you reached 20 stacks, you gain 100% crit chance for 6 seconds. This occured on every single damage event for classes, and worked with abilities that couldn't ever crit, such as Demonology's Implosion or Shadow Priests' Shadowy Apparitions. Clearly this was a broken interaction, so instead of actually fixing the way the essence worked with abilities that can't crit, they just nerfed the essence and made it an RPPM proc and reduced the benefits. As it stands right now, there is no reason whatsoever to ever use this essence.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you want to use the on-use ability of this essence, slap yourself in the face and figure out where you need to put your personal portal to rectify the situation. Shame.
Conflict and Strife

Rank 4: Reach Elite rank and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
Demon Armor is not a damage increase whatsoever, but if there's ever an encounter where you'll benefit from having massive physical damage reduction on top of warlocks' already high passive damage reduction, this could be a viable trait. Otherwise, flee.

Rank 4: Emissary boxes from Uldum Accord?
New for 8.3, this minor essence currently does more damage at Rank 1 than crucible of flame. Must use. At rank 3, it has quadruple the chance to proc below 20% on a boss. On top of this, it also provides a nice -10 to your character's corruption stat. You will never take off this essence.

First and foremost, this is your absolute best option for single target damage as any minor trait. However, early on in progression this is also our best major trait, so you're pretty unlikely to be slotting this into one of your minor slots. This changes once we obtain rank 3 Condensed Life Force.
Worldvein Resonance

Rank 2: Combine

Rank 3: Complete the mission chain starting with "A Disturbing Rumor".
Rank 4: Complete a specific

The second highest dps minor trait for affliction warlocks, this is only really a good choice once you reach rank 3, which forunately will be obtainable relatively early on. The radius of the passive azerite crystals is relatively small, so hitting rank 3 for the extra radius is quite a big deal. If working properly, this is basically the equivalent of always having half of a stat potion, which is pretty nice for a trait.
Condensed Life Force

Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18

Rank 3: Combine 27

Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Similar to Crucible of Flame in this section, it very much seems at the current point in tuning that once you reach rank 3 of this essence, you're more than likely to be using this essence as your major, however before that point this serves as a reasonable choice for a minor essence, dealing a significant enough amount of damage to the point where you should prefer taking it over the basic stat increase options listed in later tiers.
Most of the essences in this tier are just solid choices for stat increases.

Passive stacking versatility. Might be a solid option for a fight where you just want a little extra passive survivability, but honestly that's quite a stretch.

Again, a passive stacking crit buff, with the caveat that once you reach 40 stacks, it procs a haste buff for a certain amount of time. In its pre-nerf state, this could be a very good minor trait, but after the nerfs it's not as good as either of the other two middle tier options, let alone the top tier options.

The fact that this essence is still the best of the bottom tier essences is pretty indicative of how strong it was before it got completely gutted. Once upon a time, this used to give a stack of its unique stacking buff every time you failed to crit, and gave 100% crit one that buff fully stacked. Now its an RPPM proc, and it gives less crit. Not good anymore.

Another damage minor, but significantly worse than other options. Maybe worth taking against abberations? That's about it.

Question about The Minor for Ripple in Space. Is it still no good even with the changes? It shows "gain 668 int in for 15 seconds. This can only occur once every 30 seconds." Still not worth getting? Thanks for a great guide!

There's an error regarding the
Conflict and Strife
essence. For affliction, it provides the PvP talent
Endless Affliction
, not Demon Armor.

How does the Vision of Perfection work with Summon Darkglare? I have not unlocked the essence yet so I can't test for myself.
Does it grant the 8 second boost to all DoTs when it procs? Or does it grant 2.8 seconds (35% of 8 seconds)? I hadn't considered that possibility, but I was just looking at the Demonology essences guide and it mentioned that when Demonic Tyrant procs it grants 35% of the intellect from Supreme Commander traits, so I figured Affliction might do something similar.
