At some point or another, each World of Warcraft player will have received an email from Blizzard. Whether it's to thank them for a purchase, or tell them about upcoming content or special offers, we'll have had an email land in our inbox. However, not every email is genuine; I've read a lot of stories from new players who followed a link in what they thought was a legitimate Blizzard email, only to have their accounts stolen.
The purpose of this guide is to explain how to prevent that happening to you, and it can be done very easily through the power... of email headers.
Let's take a look at a scam email; I received this one back in 2010, but it is still relevant for what I am trying to teach you.
As you can see, my email client (Mozilla Thunderbird) has marked this email as a potential scam, which by itself should raise your suspicions... but not everyone uses that. You may use Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, or another email provider, but they all have one thing in common: they should have an option to let you view the headers.
To enable email headers in Thunderbird, go to View > Headers, and then click on 'All.' Other email clients will differ on how to do this, but - speaking from experience - this option can usually be found under the 'View' menu, or within your client's Settings/Preferences menu.
Now that you've got the headers enabled, you should now see a lot more things underneath 'From,' 'Subject' and 'To.' Many of these are usually technical details about the email, but the one that we are most interested in is called 'Return-Path.'
Going back to the screenshot I linked above, we can see that the Return Path looks like this:
If this was a proper Blizzard email, then this would end with 'battle.net' or 'blizzard.com,' and not 'hotmail.com.' Based on this, we can safely assume that this email is a scam, and that it can be safely deleted.
It should also be worth noting that Blizzard will
NEVER
send you an email asking you to verify your account username and password, nor will they ever send emails asking for other personal details such as your address and phone number. By making use of headers, you can immediately see what is a real email and what is not, meaning that the scammers will not be able to deceive you as easily as they would have hoped.
That is pretty much all there is to it, and I did say it was going to be easy; by taking a few moments to enable email headers, you can save yourself from having your account stolen. However, it goes without saying that having a strong password and an authenticator are also useful tools to have in your arsenal.
I hope you found this guide useful, and that it helps keep your account safe.
Onwards now, for adventure and glory await!
