Common mistakes and ways to improve gameplay
Shouldn't I Save My Cooldowns for Emergencies?
When learning how to tank, many people hold defensive cooldowns "in case you need it" for an emergency. However, if you do this and lose a cast in the time frame that you held it, you are losing overall survivability. If you have a 1 minute cooldown, and you hold it for 1 minute or longer while actively tanking, you lose a whole cast, meaning less uptime on higher mitigation that you could have otherwise utilized. In long duration encounters or Mythic+, if you delay your cooldowns multiple times, the amount delayed total can add up to multiple missed casts. Unless you know in advance that you will need a cooldown in the next few seconds, you should utilize every available cooldown as soon as they are ready.
What's the Right Time to Use Defensives?
Defensive cooldowns should be used in a way to maximize their effectiveness. In general, this means prior to a particularly dangerous ability or pull. If you use it before the hits occur, you won't lose as much health, leading to a more stable health pool and reduced chance of dying. Using one after a big hit is only good if you missed the timing, to give healers a chance to recover. However, doing so is always worse than using your cooldowns in advance. Specifically, since
烈火烙印
and
恶魔尖刺
are damage reduction, they need to be used before the dangerous hits happen or they won't have any effect.
恶魔变形
is more nuanced, as it also provides you with a 50% instant heal when cast, so if you are able to survive something without it and know you will need the extra survivability afterwards, it may be worth holding until just afterwards.
Should I Combine or Rotate Cooldowns?
When calling for externals, do not layer too many cooldowns. If you burn a bunch at once, you won't have any later, or will have fewer than you may need later. Plan your cooldowns ahead of time, and call out for them, so that your healers don't panic and all use cooldowns on you at once.
Consuming Fury and Souls Inappropriately with
幽魂炸弹
If you are looking to maximize
幽魂炸弹
then you want to avoid over-cap on souls and using any souls on
灵魂裂劈
. Casting
幽魂炸弹
with fewer souls means that your damage is lower per cast, and you are wasting Fury as well. You want to make sure you are dumping all your pain with
灵魂裂劈
after spending all souls on
幽魂炸弹
before using
破裂
again.
How Do I Handle External Cooldowns?
Oftentimes on higher content, you will have to utilize big cooldowns from external sources. Most externals come from healers, but some can be from DPS or even your co tank. Use these often and as needed. Be sure not to waste them and give whoever you are calling to a couple gcds to figure out whats going on. Until they get used to it, most players will be slow to react. Using all externals effectively along with your own cooldowns helps minimize the damage you are taking, making pulls safer to execute.
A good format for calling for externals is
Player with cooldown's name - cooldown you want - Your character name (or "me" if people know your voice)
eg Fina Sac Itamae
Generally you will also want to shorten the names if possible for quicker reactions, so clarity is also essential. The below table covers most externals and some common abbreviations for them, as well as utility spells for Mythic+.

Not Tracking Party cooldowns
Related to the above, in Raid, you always want to track Healer cooldowns so you can call for them when needed.
In Mythic+, making time often involves large, dangerous pulls that need to be burst down quickly so that you do not die to sustained damage while your abilities are on cooldown. An important part of this is tracking your DPS and Healer cooldowns so you know when you can do these large pulls and be able to minimize the damage taken while maximizing group DPS to survive it. When DPS have their cooldowns up, they are able to kill things during your defensive cooldown window, allowing you to survive a pull that would kill you if it lasted just a few seconds longer.
Some
WeakAuras
that may help with this are ZenTracker and its associated front-ends, as well as
addons
such as Exorsus Raid Tools
Focusing too heavily on Survivability
Many new tanks think, "DPS does not matter, my job is to be a meat shield!" While a tank's primary job is to survive, once you get to a to the point of survivability where you are not dying, stacking any more survivability is unnecessary. If you don't die, there is no difference between living with very little hp or living with slightly more. At this point, you should aim to maximize DPS, to make things die faster. We generally do not have enough cooldowns and healers do not have enough mana to sustain periods of heavy damage for a long time, so the faster your group can kill something, the less time you have to tank, reducing the probability of dying.
Not knowing when to Kite
This is generally more applicable to Mythic+, but knowing when you need to kite and when to stay in is important. In general, if playing
喂食恶魔
, it is a survivability loss to run away, but when you don't have mitigation available, it may be the best play. Kiting also does not mean running as far away as you can, as you will outrange your healer and they will not be able to help you. What you should be aiming to do is micro-kiting, which is staying just out of range of most of the enemies while keeping one near you so you can continue to generate souls using
破裂
or
裂魂
, and
献祭光环
with
爆燃
.
Log Analysis
Simulations for Tanks
Most tanks are updated within Simulationcraft so that you can use it for DPS simulations. You will not be able to use it for survivability purposes at all, but if you want to maximize dps, it can help.
Since most defensiveness comes from proper play, if you feel comfortable pushing your DPS you should sim on raidbots.
Note that you cannot sim for defensiveness, but for damage only.
In raid you can use one basic sim for everything, though it will not accurately reflect every raid situation. For Mythic+, you will want to do a few different sims and average them out, as the dungeon slice and hectic add cleave modules do not properly reflect actual dungeon scenarios.
The recommended ways to sim are covered below.
Standard Patchwerk sim for 5 minutes with full raid buffs
40 second, 5 target patchwerk without bloodlust
60 second, 8 target patchwerk with bloodlust
2 minutes, 1 target patchwerk with and without bloodlust
40 second, 5 target patchwerk without bloodlust
60 second, 8 target patchwerk without bloodlust
4 minutes, 1 target patchwerk with bloodlust
Combat Logs
Utilize
Warcraftlogs
for looking at various statistics and timings. You can use their replay feature to look for boss movement or use the various graphs for comparing when a boss did an ability on you and whether or not you had a cooldown active. Use it to compare yourself to better tanks, and see what they are doing differently, in order to improve your own game.
If you want a slightly easier time, utilize
WoW Analyzer
to have it do the math for you. It will tell you all of your uptimes and ability usages, as well as how well you mitigated damage. This can sometimes be inaccurate as it is fight dependent, but it is a good starting point.
In addition, you can use
Wipefest
to help you figure out where and why you are taking unnecessary damage.
The primary items to look at for tanks are:
Ability usage - How did you manage your gcds? Were you able to press every button on cooldown, if not then why?.
Were you having troubles surviving - If you died, how did it happen, if you didn't then how was your smoothness or effectiveness?
Utilizing the replay function and various statistics you can look at how you were mechanically. Were you able to make the most of every mechanic?
There aren't any primary statistics to look at for tanks. There are many, and they will all be different for each tank spec.
As fun as it is to attempt to parse for dps, it does not actually show your true skill with a class. A perfect tank will be able to maximize his effectiveness in both survivability and dps. Most are only able to do one or the other, sometimes a bit of both. Strive to achieve this strong balance.

Best use of first Spark of Ingenuity? Fill gear gaps? How strong are the leather armors? I was going to make the Neck because it's my weakest slot, but I don't want to feel regret if the 2 piece leather set is imba...
Mainly Mythic + gameplay and something useful for Havoc if I DPS raid
