Early in my Azerothian life, when my Tauren was allowed to ride only wolves, kodos, and
one
horse (which Rivendare never did hand over, after well over 100 Strath runs), I developed a fascination with mounts. With the release of burning Crusade, the talbuks became my new goal and I spent a
lot
of time in Nagrand. One day, as things started to heat up in Halaa, I looked up at a mighty level 70 flying in to help – and saw the mount of my dreams. That day, it became my mission in Azerothian life to obtain what was then the only dragon mount around – which I later learned was called a nether drake.
Over 100 mounts later,
Zoya
is still my favorite mount. He took me 8 days to obtain. My second toon managed it in 5. With this guide, I hope you will be able to befriend your very own netherwing companion too.
If you’re looking to track your collections, Wowhead now has the
Battle Pet Collection Tracker
and
Mount Collection Tracker
! To use the tracker, simply import your character to view your collections.
You can read more about how to use this feature here!
To acquire and complete the intro quest chain, you will need to be level 70, and have basic flight. You must have a flying mount to reach some quest locations. When you have met the prerequisites, travel to Shadowmoon Valley. If you are a Scryer, your journey is made simpler by the fact that your quest-starting NPC wanders an area very near to your flight path at Sanctum of the Stars.
Just east of the Sanctum, there is an open field bounded by the Sanctum on the west, Dragonmaw Fortress on the east, and the pass south to the Altar of Shadows.
Mordenai
patrols just west of the entrance to the pass. His quest starts the Ally of the Netherwing quest chain.
Kindness
In the area where Mordenai patrols, kill
Rocknail Flayers
to collect 8
carcasses
. Place a carcass on the ground, and wait for the nether drakes to come to the ground and feed. Stand still nearby until you see your quest credit. Then, move to a new location (a fed drake won’t come back down for a second meal, so you need to move within range of a new drake) and place the next carcass.
Seek Out Neltharaku
Neltharaku flies a patrol from about the middle of the fields, over and around Dragonmaw Fortress. Possibly the easiest way to find him is to fly high above the fortress gates and “/tar Nelthar” – then put a raid icon on him. Don’t forget to look up – he flies higher than any other mob in the area. He has a funny target box – it can be difficult to get into position to talk to him. Try flying under him, near his heart.
Neltharaku’s tale
Listen to the nice dragon…
Infiltrating Dragonmaw Fortress
Go to Dragonmaw Fortress. Kill 15 Dragonmaw orcs.
To Netherwing ledge!
Fly out to the Ledge and collect a dozen
Nethervine Crystals
The ledge is the large floating ‘island’ off the southeast edge of Shadowmoon Valley. You’ll be spending a lot of time here. The crystals can be found in
briars
that grow at the base of crystals all over the island. The nodes will show on a miner’s minimap tracking interface
The Force of Netharaku
Use the
Enchanted Nethervine Crystal
to free enslaved Netherwing drakes at the fortress, then help them defeat their erstwhile masters.
For best success, stand back, preferably behind your drake’s orcish captor. Target the drake and use the crystal (does not work if the drake is in combat with you – so stand back. The crystal has a long range). Then help the drake fight the orc – when the drake wins the fight, he is free.
Karynaku
Karynaku is chained to the platform in the top courtyard of the fortress. This quest is listed as a group quest- but that’s because the immediate, same-location follow-on is a 5-man group at level 70. You can safely talk to karynaku on your own – there’s just no point, until you are ready for the next quest.
Zuluhed the whacked
Basically, accepting the quest starts the fight. Things will change fast, so be prepared. This can be soloed at 80, and soloed easily at 85. The following information is provided for individuals who are doing the quest at 70. Kill Zuluhed and use the key he drops to free Karynaku from her chains.
Key elements of the fight:
- Archers on the ramparts make the courtyard unsafe
- Every 30 seconds, Zuluhed summons a big demon
Key tactics to win:
- Prior to starting the fight, clear the two side rooms off the courtyard
- Send your entire group into one of the two rooms, leaving one person out to talk to Karynaku and start the fight
- Run immediately to join your group
- Stay in the room, out of sight, drawing Zuluhed into the room to fight
- When he
begins
to cast his summon – run to the other room – out of line of sight of the door. Zuluhed will come to you. When his demon summons in to the first room, he will see no targets, and stay there.
- When Zuluhed begins his second summon – run out to the courtyard. Remember that your damage will increase due to the archers.
- When Zuluhed begins his third summon – be sure he is dead.
Ally of the Netherwing
Return to Mordenai.
The last quest in chain grants you sufficient reputation to become neutral with the Netherwing Faction (42,000). To continue, you must have the fast flight skill – you will not be offered any further quests if you do not have this skill.
Each new reputation level brings one or more one-time quests, and opens new dailies. Some reputation buffs, such as
Spirit of Sharing
do add to the reputation gains indicated.
Guild perks
and other variables may apply. The base reputation gain (without any perks) is given for quests – “mileage may vary.”
You must have completed the Ally of the Netherwing quest chain, and have fast flying in order to obtain the follow on quest from
Mordenai
.
One-Time Quests
Blood Oath of the Netherwing
Swear loyalty to the Netherwing. In return, Mordenai gives you the
Dragonmaw Illusion
, which disguises you as a Dragonmaw Fel Orc any time you are in the Dragonmaw Fortress or on the Netherwing Ledge. This makes the Dragonmaw mobs friendly.
-
Dragonmaw Ascendants
,
Dragonmaw Skybreakers
, and
Dragonmaw Transporters
on the Ledge will see through this disguise.
- To attack (skinners farming drakes, people going back to help others with Zuluhed), you can mark yourself at war with the faction. Killing Netherwing faction members does not cost you reputation!
The Dragonmaw illusion is notoriously buggy, sometimes not clearing correctly when you leave the area, interfering with priests Shadowform, and causing issues with hunter/lock pets, for example. Most of these are harmless, and simply flying in and out of the zone will reassert the disguise correctly.

Reputation: 350 the first time/250 thereafter
Daily Quests
Each daily rewards 250 reputation. The gathering dailies are listed as a single entity because you can only complete one of them per day. Doing all available dailies grants 1000 reputation.
A Slow Death
Use
Yarzil’s Mutton
to poison 12 peons.
In order to use the mutton, you must poison it using
fel glands
. These drop from several types of Shadowmoon Valley wildlife, including nether rays, dimetradons, felboard, and chimaerae. They only stack to 12, and they no longer drop after the quest has been completed (not “turned in” – once you have poisoned your peons, the glands stop dropping). So – no short-cutting – you must go kill 12 mobs and come back to the ledge to poison peons.
Be careful where you drop your poison. If the peons can’t get to it (too far under a tilted crystal, for example) they won’t eat it. Some peons occasionally bug and won’t eat – it’s handy to drop this near a small group of peons so that if one is bugged, you don’t miss out and waste the item. Peons who are standing still doing nothing may be bugged. Peons who have been Booteranged (see “Friendly to Honored” quests) will not eat.
The Not-So-Friendly Skies...
Bring yarzil 10
Netherwing Relics
Relics drop (100%) from
Dragonmaw Transporters
. Traditionally, Transporters are pulled and killed from the floating islands on the northeast side of the ledge. They take off and land on a wooden ramp on the mainland opposite one of these floating islands, and higher level players may want to post near the ramp as they are easier to target here. In addition, Transporter pat paths take them past one island or the other- but all transporters come to the ramp, so it’s a bit faster. The Dragonmaw Ascendants near the ramp make this a dicey choice at 70. Some players have had better luck farming near the Transporters spawn point southeast of Dragonmaw fortress @72,64.
Netherwing Crystals
Netherwing Crystals
drop from mobs on the ledge.
Gathering Dailies
If you have multiple gathering skills, you may be able to gather the objects – but you can still only turn in one of the gathering quests each day. It’s advisable to gather as you go regardless – you can stockpile for future turn-ins or sell on the AH – but each gathering node also has a chance to produce a
netherwing egg
for a quick 250 rep. Mining and herbalism nodes appear on the ledge and in Dragonmaw Fortress on the mainland. Skinning will require mobs in the mines on the Ledge. Gathering the needed items will require 350 gathering skill (mining/herbalism/skinning).

The Netherwing Mines
Report to the Mistress of the Mines for 75 reputation.
There are two mine entrances – one on the west side of the ledge, and one slightly counter-clockwise of the first. The Mistress of the Mines stands at each entrance. I recommend using the second entrance, as there are sometimes eggs in the corridor that leads from there to the part of the mines accessed directly from the first entrance. Completing this quest opens most of the remaining “friendly” quests.
Overseeing and you: making the Right Choices
You will need 10
knothide leather
and the
Hardened Hide of Tyrantus
.
Tyrantus
can be found in Eco-Dome Farfield in Netherstorm .
Completing this quest is required in order to open up the Booterang daily, and rewards 250 reputation.
Crazed and Confused
Ronag the Slave Driver
wants you to kill 5
Crazed Murkblood Miners
and the
Crazed Murkblood foreman
for 350 reputation.
There is a Foreman hiding in most of the back corners of the upper mines. Look for him cowering behind an ore cart that looks like it is almost against the back wall, in any of the corners.
To find Ronag in the lower mines:
Enter the mines, and follow either set of raised tracks until they meet and slope down to the lower mines. Where the tracks meet the ground, turn back to your left and follow the cave ‘forward’ (the same direction that the raised tracks were leading you). Turn left into the large cave with the imprisoned dragon. You’ll find Ronag at the entrance to that room. (The dragon is a leftover from an earlier concept. In the earlier design, this dragon sent you to an NPC that still patrols on one of the floating islands south of the ledge.)
To find Crazed Murkbloods in the upper mines:
Enter the mines, and follow either set of raised tracks until they meet and slope down to the lower mines.
- Where the tracks meet, walk forward to the short tunnel, and climb up to the next section of raised tracks. Turn left to cross over the area you were just standing in and enter the upper mines.
- Alternately, follow the raised tracks forward and around (right, then to the left), leading directly to the ‘bridge’ of tracks into the upper mines.
When you reach the upper mines, turn right - that half of the mines is full of them.
For those who quested in Blasted Lands, the layout of the mines appears to be the same map used for the Nethergarde Mines at the entrance to that zone from Swamp of Sorrows.
The Great Murkblood Revolt
The
Murkblood Escape Plans
that start this quest drop from
Crazed Murkblood Miners
and
Black Blood of Draenor
. Turning the plans in to the Mistress of the Mines rewards 350 reputation.

Gather 2
Felsteel Bars
, 1
Adamantite Frame
, 1
Khorium Power Core
and 1
Flawless Arcane Essence
to make your Soul Cannon and gain 500 reputation.
Felsteel can be smelted by any miner.
Adamantite Frames and Khorium Power Cores are crafted by engineers.
Qiff
in Area 52 sells both of these items. They are limited supply and rarely available.
The Flawless Arcane Essence requires a quested interaction with the NPCs at Lake Jorune, above stonebreaker Hold in Terokkar. Find
Sar’this
in his hut to start the sequence, then follow him as he summons elementals. You’ll need to defeat elementals at each stop (all are soloable at 70) – the last one drops the Arcane Essence.
You must complete this quest in order to obtain Subdue the Subduer.
Subdue the Subduer
For 500 reputation, take your freshly-crafted
Soul Cannon
to the Twilight Ridge in Nagrand and subdue
Reth’hedron
.
You must be on your flying mount in order to use the soul cannon. Reth’hedron is a mighty mob at 70 and you can’t successfully fight him. So, mount up, and find a good place to subdue him while avoiding his fiery projectile attacks. Common tactics include:
- Those who are agile on their flying mounts can simply follow him around, strafing side to side to avoid his attacks.
- Those who are less comfortable flying around and keeping their soul cannon going may want ot use the archway for LoS. Some folks report that using the pillars for LoS helps them. My favorite: mount up, and park on the front edge of the top of the arch. When he walks by, target him and slowly step backwards. When you get near the back edge of the archway, you will be out of LoS for him, but the soul cannon will still be working on him. (You must be mounted on a flying mount – nothing says you have to be in the air….)
The Dragonmaw Races
The skybreaker races are either the coolest or the most annoying quests in all of Netherwing (depends on who you ask). “Back in the day,” they rewarded the then-awesome (and now-useless-except-as-a-trophy)
Skybreaker Whip
. Today – they are still worth over 3,000 rep – so if you are one of those who finds them cool and easy, they are a great way to earn rep. In addition, for Achievement Hounds, completing all of the races will also grant you and the
Skyshattered
achievement.
Each of the races works the same way. You speak to the indicated racer, and have to follow him on a track around the Ledge, while dodging meteor-like rocks thrown back at you. It’s a 3-D race with some tight turns, and one wrong move can easily cause you to fail it out. Few people ever succeed the races on their first try.
Several places have posted race maps showing you the path you will be flying – use that info! Fly the path once in advance so you are familiar with the terrain – then expect the possibility that you may have to fail the race once or twice to figure out
exactly
where this or that turn is, etc. The racing quests are:

/
The Deadliest Trap Ever Laid (Aldor)
For 500 rep, defend the Aldor/Scyer outpost from the Dragonmaw.
This is a group quest, but can be easily soloed at higher levels. A fortunate lower level may also succeed – healers have an edge here. You must help the Aldor/Scryer forces fight off waves of dragonmaw. When the attack is done, you and your commander must be alive. Healers – you can heal the Aldor/Scryer commander. Though possible to solo at level, it requires some luck – bringing a long a friend or two is still a better plan. Also, watch for the zone-wide emotes – if someone else is doing the quest, go help – if you are both present, and both participate, and both have the quest, you should be able to both get credit, even if you are from opposing factions.
On Wings Of Nether
Bow to the Highlord
You have reached a new rep level – one last chat with the nice Overlord.
Lord Illidan Stormrage
He’s very impressed with you. A zone-wide emote will instruct all to hail the Highlord of the Dragonmaw, <your name here>.
***spoiler alert*** If you’d prefer to maintain the surprise of the story line, stop here…***
Lord Illidan, on the other hand, is not nearly as impressed with you – or with the Overlord, for falling for your flimsy disguise. When the Overlord introduces you as the newest hero of the hour, Illidan will turn you into spooge and stomp off in a huff, leaving the Overlord with orders to destroy you properly
Never leave important tasks to an underling who has failed you once already …
It seems that Yarzil is only
sort of
a goblin. That, as it turns out, is his humanoid form. After all those eggs, and all the help you have given him in saving his cousins, Yarzil blows his cover, transforms into his dragon form, and whisks you off to safety! (If you look this up, you’ll find some posts noting that this is a painfully slow ride. They sped it up – now it’s quite bearable).
Your toils end in Shattrath. I have read that you will be ‘given’ a nether drake, but if you are reading carefully you’ll note that this is only partially true. Every other mount you have is something you owned – but not your first nether drake. When you reach Shattrath, Barthamus will express to you the gratitude of all of his people for your service, telling you that you have saved them all. “It is not much but there is something that we can offer... My kin have each offered to join you on your mission in Outland. Simply ask and they will bond with you.”
That’s right – you’re not being ‘given’ a mount. Rather, the netherwing are so indebted to you, they have volunteered to be your companion in your heroic travels. You may choose one to be your bonded companion. (OK, OK – and after that, you can go back out to the ledge, where you can buy mounts in each of the five remaining colors from
Drake Dealer Hurlunk
out on the Ledge.) Your new friend even has a name:
Jorus the Cobalt Netherwing Drake
Malfas the Purple Netherwing Drake
Onyxien the Onyx Netherwing Drake
Suraku the Azure Netherwing Drake
Voranaku the Violet Netherwing Drake
Zoya the Veridian Netherwing Drake
Let’s face it, doing just the dailies, this could take a while. Actually – doing just the dailies, with no rep boost, it will take two weeks:
Day 1: Neutral
Day 2: Friendly
Day 4:Honored
Day 7: Revered
Day 14: Exalted
There are a couple of things you can do to speed things up:
Come prepared
Here are some items you can pick up in advance, and have ready when quests call for them:
Gathering quest items (
Nethercite Ore
,
Netherdust Pollen
, and
Nethermine Flayer Hide
) can be farmed/purchased on the AH ahead of time.
10
knothide leather
2
Felsteel Bars
1
Adamantite Frame
1
Khorium Power Core
Pick your quests
You may find that the time it takes to fly out to Nagrand to
disrupt the twilight portal
each day is better spent in farming gathered items while egg-hunting. The same goes for the time you spend collecting fel glands to
poison peons
(though this has a much better return these days, with the drop rate raised to 100%). Some people also choose to turn in netherwing crystals only ‘when they get enough for a turn-in’ without specifically farming for them.
The real money – er, rep – is in eggs.
There is no limit to the number of eggs you can turn in each day. Eggs reward 250 rep each. Four eggs nets you 1,000 rep. And unlike the early days, egg hunting is not that competitive – unless you and someone else happen to be running this gamut at the same time, you could hunt eggs for days without seeing another toon. So here are the things you need to know about eggs:
Eggs grow everywhere.
They have open spawn points on the ground, drop from gathering nodes, and sometimes drop from mobs. The drop rates are low, so visible spawn points are your best bet.
Eggs emit nether smoke.
It can be hard to see in the glowy nether environment – but sharp eyes and high video settings are your friends. Eggs emit a stream of smoke straight up into the air.
Eggs come in threes.
Or rather, their spawn points do. For example, in the entry to the mines (the train tracks between the two doors), there are three spots that can spawn an egg. At any given time, one of these spots will spawn an egg. When that egg is harvested another egg will spawn in
one
of the three spots 2-4 hours later.
Eggs spawn on the ledge.
As you fly around the ledge for your other quests, you’ll learn the spots where they spawn. There are maps and cords galore, but the fact is there are just too darned many places to list or memorize them all. Fly it and look for the spot. Some easy places to see them include:
- Set of three spawn points all in the same small area where Barash the Den Mother patrols
- Set of three spawn points mostly hidden among the crystals at the start of the dragonmaw runway right in the camp!
- Set of three spawn points near the Dragonmaw transporter’s wooden ‘dock’ on the north end of the Ledge (two near the wharf, one right in the mouth of the skull of the skeleton on the ground south of the dock)
Eggs spawn off the Ledge.
Fly the islands on the Ledge’s outer rim – there are several egg spawn points on these!
Eggs spawn in the mines!
There are two sets of three-spawn points in the mine entry, 4-5 sets of spawn in the upper mines, a set in the lower mines in the room with the dragon, another set in the area just outside his room, thee more sets in the big room and side rooms of the lower mines, and a couple of sets on the raised train tracks (be sure to look
inside
ore carts sitting on the tracks!).
Eggs spawn on the mainland.
There is a set of spawn points in the courtyard of Dragonmaw Fortress – one in the wagon to the right of the gate, one in the stable, and one over near the wall across from the stable (to the left of the stable as you stand at the main gate). There is also a set of spawn points that spans each of the towers, including the big tower on the right side of the fortress, and one spot in a tiny corral area of nether whelps in the back left as you enter the fortress. In the side rooms where you may have fought Zuluhed, the center of the room has a sort of brazier which sometimes contains an egg. Look for the smoke coming from the towers, and search the towers every time you go past. Even when egg hunting was very competitive, many people missed these spots.
Finally – even if you don’t normally use addons, this could be the time. The
Gatherer Addon
is your friend. Once installed, look for an addition to this addon called “GathererDBWowhead.” When last I looked, this was not being maintained – but it doesn’t matter. It’s an older set of info from the wowhead database – which contains spawn points for netherwing eggs. It won’t help you find eggs – at any given time, one spawn point of three is valid, and it could be anywhere in its 2-4 hours spawn cycle. However, it
will
help show you where to search as you are setting your egg patrol.
As I said in my intro – having done this sequence once, the second time around I did the convenient dailies (I did not fly out to Nagrand each day, for example), and spent the rest of my time hunting eggs. For four straight days, I did nothing but dailies and hunt eggs. And on day five I had my drake. This was before the Cataclysm – things were not as competitive as Burning Crusade – but the introduction of mount achievements made them more competitive than they currently are as 80s rushed back to do these quests. With determination, rep bonuses, and less competition, 3-4 days is not impossible.
Yes, it’s easier than it used to be. If you need it to be difficult to be worthwhile – challenge yourself to see how fast you can finish. Still – it’s one of the more unique mounts in the game, and if you enjoy WoW lore, being the hero of an entire race of dragons is no small thing either…
Now that you know what goes into this, keep an eye out for the zone-wide shout that says a new dragonrider is about to enter our ranks. When you hear the Overlord exhorting you to Hail the new hero of the Dragonmaw, send them a congratulatory whisper – they’ll appreciate knowing someone noticed. And if a friend is about to get exalted – consider making a big deal of it. Although it may not be as great an achievement today as it once was, our guild started the tradition “back in the day” – and keeps it up to this day – that when a new dragonrider is about to join our ranks, available guildies with nether drakes ride out to the Ledge to accompany him or her on the “rescue ride” to Shattrath, and remain as (s)he selects a companion, so that we may cheer our dragonrider and dragon on their First Flight together. It’s a terrific moment for everyone present, and an expression of solidarity from “those who have been there.”
And in case there isn’t anyone nearby to say it to you – now that you have made your way through the maze of quests and gained your new companion….
Hail, Dragonrider!!

I was hanging out in the canals in Stormwind, when suddenly above me appeared this gorgeous PURPLE drake. I had never seen one this color (my favorite color) and was absolutely entranced. I whispered the rider and asked where he got it, and he answered "Shadowmoon. Netherwing." I looked it up and thus began my obsessive quest for a purple drake.
Since then I've known a number of folks who started the grind for the Netherwings but never finished. It is a long, tedious grind. It may be easier nowadays, but still, 4-5 days of continuous dailies and turning in eggs can be exceedingly boring and difficult, especially for a "casual" player. I got mine in 4 days, but I tend to have more time for these things than most (and I also tend to be a bit more obsessive about these things than most!) Having all these drakes is one of the best treats in the game. I was very proud when I completed it and was so excited on that final flight that I almost dismounted in mid-air and killed myself.
If you have the time to grind, staying in the caves and killing/searching for eggs is a real boost. If not, doing the dailies isn't so hard; the story is fun and none of the quests is really difficult. The most difficult part for me was having to fly across the void to get to the ledge (that "nothingness" sort of freaks me out. :-\ ) You can also pick up quite a bit of gold this way (pennies add up quickly!) from the mobs and the drops.
The rewards are definitely worth it. Shortly after I got my drakes, I started seeing a lot of them around. Lately, I've not seen very many. I love being able to choose a color, depending on my mood, but my favorite is still the purple one (actually there are two purples, slightly different shades.) They're very striking and the wing effect is wonderful.
There are many many good tips and tricks offered in the comments here (on WoWhead.) My advice - READ them. Use the tips and tricks, be patient, and get your drakes! You won't regret it. Not only will you have six wonderful mounts to add to your collection, you'll also have the satisfaction of accomplishing a goal that many simply don't have the patience to finish. Do it!

Oh man I -still- remember the first time I saw a netherdrake. I was in Shattrath because I was told it was the best place to set my hearth. I was wandering around lost and suddenly a shadow passes over and I see a beautiful dragon with a rider on it's back. My jaw dropped and from that day on, I wanted one. Finally, so long later in Wrath, I was able to get one for my own. It was worth every second of the grind, and is one of the best reputation grinds in WoW.

Well i just got my netherdrake today. Took 5 days and surprisingly enough i pulled through the constant toiling in wondering why i am setting soo much time torwards this questline. I am very glad i stuck with it. The questline may be one of the few things i have ever spent time on considering i have problems sticking with anything lol. It reminds me entirely of what it is to work hard for something you want and the reward when looking back on the situations where it didnt look good is well worth it. And i will verify the previous post. FARM EGGS. This link will show quite a few of the locations for Netherwing Eggs its pictoral but it helped me bunches.

It took me mths to grind for my drake as i tried so hard to beat that god damn flyer (cant remember his name now hes the last one.) But i stuck in there and have Voranaku to share my journey around Azeroth. Even now when I bring her out I get the odd whisper " omg where did you get that mount!" and proudly I rub her neck and say "She was a gift thru hard work" I luv my drake Hail Dragonriders!

Very cool quests if you get in to the lore.
I managed to get Exalted in 4 days, what with Guild and Human Racial rep boosts.
I started playing WoW in Burning Crusade, and I had no idea how to level efficiently to get to 70. I saw a nether drake one day in Shattrath, when I was level 50 and far too distracted to get leveling done, so I had a mage teleport me there. I knew that one day, I would get it.
Today was that day. I don't think I will ever not use Onyxien as my primary source of transportation.
This guide helped a lot. Thanks.

Started this quest chain back during Burning Crusade on both my rogue and warrior and sadly at the time did not finish. Was looking at various guides on the site when I came across your guide and thought back to the quests. If it wasn't for your guide I think I would of still placed the quests on the back burner as a "someday" quest series grind. My rogue Tylexis started up again on Tuesday and 5 days later she and Onyxien are happily flying through skies getting into all sorts of mischief :D. Favorite quests series would be the races. Was shocked to how amazingly fun it was. Was able to oneshot almost every rider except Corlok the Vet (had to do 3x since 1st 2x I spotted eggs and got distracted) and Mulverick (lost track of him on final turn).
While I could buy the remaining drakes, seems a bit off especially considering they offer to join you due to heroism and not coin. So I decided during the lull to MoP I will also pick it up again on my warrior as well as a couple other toons to get all the colors. I will also have company since I will be joined by my friend who got inspired by how quickly I finished. Thanks so much hun for getting me back on track!
Hail Dragonriders! Ty and Onyxien look forward to seeing you all in our adventures!

I just wanted to say thank you so much for this guide! I finally got my drake today (I chose Vora) after about a week and a half of grinding (I could have spent more time searching for eggs but didn't). I've only had her for about an hour now and already I've had a few people comment on how beautiful she is and ask where I got her!
This is DEFINITELY my favorite mount! She's so awesome looking (and compliments my Draenei skin color nicely). Thanks again!

I'm proud to show onyxien , which i think matches my DK perfectly and even more proud to join the dragonrider's thanks again

Thanks a lot for your guide, Nixie. It inspired me to take on this quest and befriend Onyxien.
I always wanted to fly the skies on that drake's back, never had the courage to do so (until now;)
Took me 4 days to complete this (it's worth every minute) and I'm very helpful for every little piece of advice given here (also in comments).
I'm honored to join the ranks of Dragonriders!

I finally managed to finish this rep grind for the first time. Egg hunting, while tedious sometimes, is definitely the fastest way to go as long as there isn't much competition going on. It's always good to still do the dailies while your at it though, since it's guaranteed rep.
First time I've ever had a drake mount ever. Me and Suraku will be cruising into MoP...and with shared mounts, my Pandaren will be cruising on one of them once they hit 60 as well (not the same as when you earn it on the toon who's riding it, but I'm not doing this rep grind again. I'm not THAT sentimental, lol).

Hikari-san's comment got me thinking. It's just a suggestion but - when you are done with your quests, you may choose to go back to do dailies or just be in the area. Do consider shouting out the locations of eggs when you see them - while you can't benefit from them after exalted, you might help someone else befriend their drake. Doesn't take much to add a simple "/y nether egg at 72,40" while you're on your way - might as well help your drake's brethren find their friends too. :)

I acquired my first drake in 3 days by doing the dailies, and then running through the mine front to back, both looking for Netherwing eggs and killing any hostile creature. I had a 3% drop rate from monsters on the eggs. I also had mining, and had a 2% drop rate in ore. I would recommend if you have gathering, to get as many herbs, skins, or minerals as you can. I sold my extra ore for a pretty good profit on a heavily populated server (Wyrmrest Accord). Happy hunting!

I just started this quest line tonight, making it to the quest "To Netherwing Legde" before my eyes would no longer stay open. I shall continue on the morrow! Thank you for this guide. It's very well written, and helpful, and it's what inspired me to choose a Netherwing Drake as my very first drake mount. I love the idea that the one you choose when you reach exalted isn't just a mount you buy, or pick up from a dungeon or raid (if you're the lucky one who wins the roll, haha), but a companion who is choosing to be with you because you helped. It makes the grinding worth it, I think. When I reach exalted I'll let you know which one I chose. Thank you again :)
Cheers,
Hellie

Currently on 5k rep to exalted, will post an update once I as well got one of the coolest dragons!

The newest dragonrider signing in. It was a full 2 week grind for me, but a fun time. I was not getting many eggs and probably averaged only 2 a day. I gave up looking for eggs on the ground after a couple of days and just did the quests. I'll note that the Twilight Portal quest yielded quite a few Aldor rep marks, so much so, that I would usually clear the camp there twice every day. thanks for this guide. it was a big help.

This is an excellent guide! Thanks to you, I'm a day away from hitting revered. I wanted to add, though, that finding eggs has been nearly impossible for me. I'm not sure if it's the time of day I'm doing the dailies, but some days I don't see a single egg, even checking all the spawn points listed here. Maybe I'm having terrible luck because the other people (and I see usually 5-10 other people doing the dailies at the same time) are also farming eggs, but it's a bit frustrating.
Just adding my two cents, since after reading the guide I was expecting egg farming to be far more lucrative but it seems like CRZ sadly nipped that in the bud.

Just finished knocking this out in slightly over a 24 hour period. Did 2 sets of dailies and used cross realm assist to go hard on egg collecting. So glad it's finished! I had 8 rep to go to exalted after my last run of egg turnins, and managed to luck out and find an egg immediately in the fortress on the mainland after I switched realms. There it was, sitting on the table in the middle of the room. The final flight from the ledge to shattrath to turn in the quest and get my drake felt like AGES. Cheers to all you other nether drake owners, and if I have one piece of advice to anyone who is going to attempt this, get cross realm assist add on and use it non stop to get those eggs. I found so many realms with no people and 20+ eggs just sitting around.

Due to the changes in how realm hopping works (or doesn't), that part of the guide should probably be removed or changed. This quest takes a bit of time now if you're on a populated server as this is still a popular quest.

One note that can speed things up a bit. Before you start the initial quest with Mordecai in Shadowmoon Valley, go to the Darkmoon Faire (assuming it's active) and ride the carousel. You'll get a 60 min buff that increases rep by 10% for 1 hour, and that applies to the 42000 rep you get at the end of the chain, so you'll go straight from Hated to Friendly (skipping Neutral) with the 10% extra (4200 rep).
That'll save you a couple of days or more right off the bat, and at level 80+ that whole chain will take you around 10 minutes to complete. As long as the Faire is in town, you can return to get your 1 hour rep buff. I was able to go from Hated to Revered in one evening using the buff.
Note that the buff doesn't last through death.

Thank you for this well written guide!
I managed to get from Neutral to nearly Revered in 2.5 hours with the 13th Anniversary Buff and the Pilgrims Bounty Buff (13+10% increased reputation).
The egg drop rates of the mobs in the mine is pretty high imo. I looted around 10 eggs in 20 minutes farming the mines.

I got my chance after I finally made 70 and looked up how to get it. It is definitley worth mentioning that using any kind of rep gain buff makes the grind just a bit easier to digest. I did this during the week of the Darkmoon Faire, and was able to skyrocket my rep. 275 vs 250 for an egg is not extremely huge, but when doing the Friendly to Honored or Honored to Revered main questline...you definitely see the benefit!
Also, get your Kara run in for the week and kill Netherspite! Pretty much a guaranteed drop for the egg, and if you have nothing better to do... :)

Outstanding guide -- thank you very much for such a thorough, well-organized explanation of everything!
As of Nov 2020 (<1 week prior to Shadowlands launch) this information is still relevant, and the guide works like a charm in order to reach Exalted status with the Netherwing as well as access the uber cool 'companion'-style Netherwing Drake mounts. Fortunately, I was able to take advantage of the 16th Year Anniversary buff, which awarded me 16% additional experience for quest and egg turn-ins during the entirety of my grind.
A few notes from my experience, for what it's worth for the original author and anyone else that might be researching tips & tricks prior to the grind:
- I was able to reach just a smidgen beyond Revered status with Netherwing simply by following the initial quest chain, which begins with Kindness and takes you through a few quests in and around Dragonmaw Fortress. The quests should pretty naturally transition towards the Netherwing Ledge, which is where you can unlock all of the daily quests! By the time I reached the ledge and was able to access dailies such as the Booterang or the mine dailies, I was already at Revered -- and I believe I even had an egg or two in my bag simply from looting quest mobs.
- At this point I was pretty satisfied with simply following the daily quests and taking the long journey from Revered to Exalted. I believe if the reputation yields in the guide are accurate, that it would only take roughly 7 days of dailies in order to reach Revered to Exalted -- which, all things considered, doesn't seem half bad.
-
HOWEVER
-- For anyone interested in speeding things up: While I was doing my questing route one day I noticed a few people talking in the /1 General Chat that were forming a group to hyperspawn farm for eggs, which immediately caught my attention. I had a few spare hours so I joined in with the group while we farmed Overmine Flayers on the big mountain in the Netherwing Ledge and collectively experienced some speedy turnarounds on the Netherwing Egg farming. I didn't keep an exact tally of my numbers, but I needed ~75 eggs to reach Exalted and I ended up getting the achievement and my mounts within about 5 hours of farming.
For anyone interested in shortening the curve and side-stepping dailies, I would highly recommend trying to piece together a group to collectively farm mobs. I think 6 or 7 of us reached Exalted during the period that I was actively farming and we were pretty easily able to find new members to join as others reached exalted or took a break. It seemed like there were enough people actively hunting the eggs to keep a solid group together -- and the benefits of the group kept the spawns and loot flowing almost infinitely.
TLDR:
This guide is really all you need to begin and complete the entirety of the Netherwing rep/mount farm. The total time needed, just utilizing quest chains/dailies is only a bit over a week, and for anyone interested in speeding up the timeline, I'd recommend trying out a hyperspawn farm in order to maximize egg yield.
Best of luck my fellow Dragonriders!

Well, I thought this was going to take ages... But I was able to get from Hated to Exalted in less than 6 Hours...
I must of had good luck, but best this I did was grab all the quests available, finish the objectives, get Whee! from darkmoon faire and hand them all in aswell as the eggs I found. I think I found about 30 eggs during my questing, a few dropped from mobs but most I found in the caves. Patience is key too!
If you haven't done it yet, do it now as the Timewalking bonus is active with 50%+ Rep gain!
评论来自
Kukkaspoika
Did this during The TBC Timewalking event for 50% extra rep. Doing the first few quests up to "Ally" gives you fresh "Revered". Then I flew around and handed in about 15 eggs and did the last few quests available. That netted me 7,275 Rep into Revered with ~14k left to go. Certainly could be better, but it also could be a lot worse.
As a Druid it took me about 90 minutes to completely clean all the related Netherwing quests and turn in every egg I found using the Handynotes addon. Would have been nice to have a few Darkmoon Top Hats and the Human racial but whatever.
