This guide will give some general tips for new and experienced players that want to try the role alike, with as much clarity and explanations possible.
What is a Healer ?
A healer is an essential part of a group, its task is to defend its allies in multiple ways : Heals, Shields, damage reductions and utility ; but mainly through heals, hence its name.
Five classes have one or two healing specs, they can switch to at level 10 :
Class
Healing spec(s)
Druid
Restoration
Monk
Mistweaver
Paladin
Holy
Priest
Discipline / Holy
Shaman
Restoration
They all use mana as their only resource, and have different playstyles and utility.
The role of a healer is one of the most, if not the most, complicated role in the game. But don’t worry, like your skill, the difficulty will increase progressively.
Preparing your interface
Action Bars
At max level, healers have a lot of spells and to prepare for such a thing, the first thing to do is adding bars. To add all the possible bars, we’ll do the following :
Press
Esc
, go to
Interface
, then to the
ActionBars
tab, and check the following options :
Bottom Left Bar
Bottom Right Bar
Always show ActionBars
for clarity
I also recommend checking the
Lock Bars
option.
If you use your mouse to click spells in your action bars, it’ll prevent them from moving by mistake. To move the spells of your action bars while this option is active, use Shift while dragging the spells.
Numbers
The basic interface of WoW shows you clear and smooth health bars. But if you want, you can add numbers to have more information about stats through the bars.
If you wish to add them, go once again in the
Interface
menu, then go to the
Display
tab, and for the
Status Text
option, and from there, you can select
Number
,
Percentage
or
Both
.
Also, I advise checking the
Scrolling Combat Text for Self
option in the
Combat
tab, it’ll show you any loss or gain of health through floating numbers, that are only visible for allies and enemies at the start.
Party/Raid frame
As selecting an enemy by clicking on his model can be easy, selecting an ally this way can become a nightmare, in a dungeon where mobs are packed around the tank, for example.
And so, you better use the party frames on the left of your screen, under your character frame, to select your allies in order to heal them.
A basic party member frame
Without any change, the party frame is clear but lacks information, just like your character frame, which we talked about just before.
By adding the numbers, which is what we did earlier, we have some information, but the clarity is not here : the health bars are too thin, and hidden behind the numbers.
A party member frame with numbers and percentages on
To solve this problem, I advise you to use the raid frames.
To do so, open the party menu next to the party frames by clicking the little bar on the side of the screen, then click on the icon on the top-right corner of the menu.
This will open the
Raid Profiles
tab in the
Interface
menu. Then, check the
Use Raid-Style party frames
option.
What you should get, just after checking the option
At this state, you should see the health bars of your allies and yourself clearly, plus, the thicker bar allows the display of numbers without sacrificing clarity.
Going back to the
Raid Profiles
tab, there are plenty of options that you can display, such as Percentage and amount of Health, Resource/Power bars, etc…
If I absolutely recommend one, that would be the
Display Class Colors
option. This will help you differentiate your group mates more easily and know what their classes are, and so, what you can expect from them in terms of utility, damage, self-protect, etc.
After checking the “Display class colors” option, my frame turned from flashy green, the standard color, to light blue, which is the color for Mages.
Addons to go further
There are many UI addons that let you re-arrange your interface the way you want. I personally use :
Bartender, for my action Bars.
DerangementShieldMeters to show amounts of shield my mates have, compared to their health bar (Be careful with that add-on as it has chances not to work if you use an add-on for group/raid unit frames).
Besides, there are addons for healing especially, like VuhDo or Healbot, that let you redo your party/raid frames, while adding other tools like mouseover macros.
Preparing your action bars
Placing your spells accordingly
While gaining levels, you’ll also get new spells, appearing in the closest slot of your action bar, and after a few levels, your bars can become a nightmare to play with, if not sorted.
To prevent this, you can try to regroup your spells, based on what they do and their cooldown :
Here's an example of categories for your spells :
Standard Offensive spells
Standard Healing spells
Movement/mobility abilities
Self-protection
Dispel/utility
Healing CDs
DPS CDs
Then, place these spells by category and usage with your personal preferences, if you have any.
For example, this is the layout I have for my Mistweaver monk
Using the Shift, CTRL and ALT modifiers is a good way to bind more slots with a reduced amount of keys. Also, these modifiers can be a way to differentiate your spells in their category :
Regular spell vs CD
Direct heal vs HoT
Single target vs AoE
Doing your Key bindings
Binding keys comes down to preference and habit. Some people might want to stick to 1-6 for basic spells and use the mouse for the rest, and others prefer to bind everything right from the start.
Moreover, this step can vary a lot depending on people (e.g. left-handed vs right handed players) and does not necessarily need to be done at the start of your adventure. You can wait a new spell to bind a key to it, or prepare your key binds in advance.
In all cases, it is important that the bindings are close to where your movement keys are, and mustn’t stretch your fingers too much in order to press the combination of keys.

Preparing yourself
Knowing your spells
Knowing what each spell does and how to use them is a great way to prepare for a dungeon or else.
So head over your spell book, read the description of your spells and try to pay a closer attention to specific effects and synergy with others.
If you need help or want to go more in-depth, there are many guides on Wowhead and other sites that can help you understand the kit of your spec.
Getting some drinks
Have some drinks in your inventory, they’ll allow you to regenerate your mana between fights.
Here are the main sources of drinks :
Food/Drink vendors, identified by the icon on your minimap (if you've toggled it on the minimap).
The
烹饪
profession, which lets you craft food and drinks yourself.
Players that have the
旅行者的苔原猛犸象
or
雄壮远足牦牛
mounts, which have vendors with drinks to sell (If they can summon their mount of course).
Mages, they are able to
summon drinks and food
(also referred to as “table”) for the whole group, so you can ask them !
Once in a group, do not hesitate to tell your mates that you need a pause for your mana, it’ll prevent them from running in a deadly fight while you recover.
Checking the strats
As you gain levels and spells, enemies become stronger, and so, they gain new, more powerful abilities. If these can be ignored at the first few levels, some boss and mobs mechanics can become deadly later on.
Before a dungeon, at its start or just before a boss, don’t be afraid to ask your mates some time to check the mechanics. Have a look at the Adventure Guide to know about boss abilities you should be aware of and those you should be careful about.
The icon for the Adventure Guide is the one highlighted in orange here
Once the
Adventure Guide
opened, choose the
Dungeon
tab at the top, then on the top-right corner, choose the
Expansion
of your dungeon, and the select your
Dungeon
from the list.
After that, you can select the boss you want information about.

Healing
Taking quick decision on who to heal and how is the key to success. This will come with your experience in different situations, as each one is unique.
Still, here are the fundamentals on who to choose to heal :
Tanks and Healers are the most important members of a group.
Their death leads to a wipe, most of the time.
If the tanks die, mobs will attack those with the most threat, until all the group dies.
If the healers die, the group will suffer unrecoverable damage and die eventually.
And so, tanks and healers must have a special attention when you’re healing, but don’t forget the DPS ! Without them, it can be very long, and in some cases impossible, to put an end to the fight.
Then, to choose what spell to cast, you must choose between :
An AoE heal or ST heal, depending on the number of allies that need to be healed
A regular spell or a CD, depending on how much efficiency you need
A direct heal, to recover from a burst of damage or a HoT, to heal a small amount of damage, or periodic damage
A lot of class guides cover generic information like Cooldown usage, Single Target healing and AoE Healing, and can give you some ideas on which spells to use in those situations.
Resurrecting
After a fight, dead players can be brought back to life thanks to resurrection spells (known as “Rez”).
Classes that have a healing spec, unlock a single target rez at level 14, across all specs.
At level 66, every healing spec get an AoE rez (also called “Mass Rez”), available .
Moreover, Death Knights, Druids, Shamans and Warlocks can resuscitate in combat (which is known as “Battle Rez”, abbreviated “BRez” or “BR”), with Shamans only able to resurrect themselves this way.

Dispelling
Another part of the healer’s job is to dispel debuffs. Once again, this might not be a problem early on, but later in your adventure, they can become really annoying, and are part of the mechanics of bosses and mobs.
Every class with a healing spec has a dispel ability, that can dispel some types of debuff.
However, the Magic type is locked to healing specs and shared accross them.

When you can dispel a debuff on an ally, a little icon shows up at the top-right corner of his frame, indicating its type in the process.
You can see the debuff and its stacks in the bottom-left corner of the frame,
and its type is recognizable from its border color, and its icon at the top-right corner of the frame
Focus : Taking care of your character
As you can see, the healer as a lot to do, he’s basically multi-tasking. Not only he has to watch for his and his allies’ health, but he also has to be aware of events such as boss/mob mechanics and care about his character.
If this sounds frightening and stressing it’s because it can be. Of course, this focus is not to be had when you start as a healer, but the more you want to progress in the game, the more you’ll need it.
There are many add-ons that can help you get some focus on yourself. For example, GTFO warns you if you’re standing in bad stuff and DeadlyBossMods (DBM) or BigWigs can help you with boss and mob mechanics thanks to alerts, countdowns, and messages.
Resource optimization
One of the biggest fears of a healer is to run out of mana when there’s healing to do.
To prevent being OOM too fast, you can try to reduce mana waste.
For that, you have to make your overhealing minimal.
Add-ons like Skada or Recount can help you keep track of such information, along other.
Skada’s “Total Healing” view, with effective healing in green, and overhealing in red
Though this kind of practice is oriented towards the end-game, and more easily integrated by experienced players in general, it can be good to try to reduce your overhealing, when you’re in a good spot with every other aspect of the healer role.
So, to minimize it, knowing your spells is essential, what they are capable of in terms of healing output and what they cost.
Even if the output can change depending on the ally you’re healing, you can see the proportion of its health bar your spells can heal and how much they cost you in return, to adapt your way of healing.
In this picture, you can see the health bar, and the proportion of incoming healing next to it.
It shows only the base value of the incoming healing, but the final result can vary depending on crits, and other effects
Another thing you can try is to interrupt a cast in order to not overheal. Let me explain.
You’re in a dungeon with a Hunter who appears to be at 70% Health, you start to cast your heal on him. 2/3 of the cast in, the Hunter uses
意气风发
and is back to full health. If you don’t interrupt your cast, it’ll overheal him, and thus wasting your mana.
To interrupt a cast, you can either move, or hit Esc if the spell is castable while moving.
I’ve no healing to do, what can I do ?
If you have nobody to heal, you can try the following, while still paying attention to your allies' health of course :
Have a mana break :
If you're in need of mana, have a lot of drinks and not considered in combat, you can go ahead and drink one. If not, just watch for your allies, or try the next suggestions while your mana recovers.
Look around :
Look for anything than can hurt or alarm you or your group to prepare/react accordingly. It can be a specific debuff, an enemy spell/attack, or mobs getting close, soon to be added to the fight if the group doesn't move.
Attack the enemies :
Even if your damages aren't really high, you’ll still contribute to the progress into the dungeon.
Use your class utility :
Each class has utility spells and each one is useful to the group, be it a CC (e.g. :
电能图腾
), an enemy buff remover (e.g. :
驱散魔法
), mobility spells (e.g.
迅如猛虎
), etc.
The enemy buff is highlighted, showing you can remove it
Learning from your mistakes and past experiences
Every mistake shouldn’t be considered as you being a failure at the healer role, but must be a mean to keep going forward and improve yourself.
As an example, many mobs have similar abilities/patterns that you can understand and remember to not be caught off guard, so be sure to keep those in mind.
Thanks
Thanks to Purno, for his "Healing guide for dummies" guide, it really inspired me to take a step back and write this guide as clearly as possible for new players, and SquireKel for his "Guide Writing for Dummies" guide, that helped a lot with BBCode.
Thank you for reading this guide, and trying the wonderful role that healer is !
