Introduction
I've been playing Hunter since 2004, and Lazurianis is my most long-standing character on my account, I love challenges, and like Kanrethad Ebonlocke, this is one of my most memorable moments in World of Warcraft. Hunters are my strong-suit, and last night, 4/26: 6:15PM EST, I officially soloed Mythic Fenryr. This was done with no guides, and an 887 ilvl. This guide is going to be designed for Beast Mastery Hunters that have lower item level or are in general struggling with this challenge.
Kill Shot
Here are my stats and gear (Legendary included):
Traits:
As you can see, my Hunter does not sport have anything very high item level, the most notable item he has is his legendary ring, that's it. And as you can see in the kill-shot, my damage for that pull was very poor, which drives the point that
this is a skill-based encounter.
High item level helps push this challenge along, but it's possible to do otherwise.
Builds
This challenge is rather flexible in damage choices, but there are a lot of notable talents that are must picks, and are completely unavoidable if you are under-geared.
Level 45 Tier
-
Posthaste
is an extremely potent choice, and probably the most viable for this challenge, however,
Farstrider
remains to have viability in this challenge with good critical strike rating. Due to it's unpredictable nature, it's recommended to stick with
Posthaste
.
Trailblazer
is not viable for this challenge because there is constant combat with no down-time.
Level 75 Tier
-
Binding Shot
is undoubtedly your best choice. You are going to be dealing with multiple adds, making
Wyvern Sting
and
Intimidation
useless for this challenge.
Level 100 Tier
- Whilst there is flexibility in this tier, it is recommended you use
Aspect of the Beast
if you are undergeared. In conjunction with
The Apex Predator's Claw
, this is without a doubt, your best talent for this encounter. This will be covered in more depth in the strategy section.
AddOns
Disclaimer:
AddOns are by no means required for this challenge, however, they are strongly recommended for their precision and functionality.
Range Display
is a simple AddOn that displays your approximate distance in intervals of five, it has a lot of customization and is amazing for this challenge because it allows you to better understand your positioning from the boss.
Deadly Boss Mods
is an AddOn I think we all know very well at this point. For those of you who don't have it, it will allow you to comprehend what's happening in the encounter more efficiently and effectively with alerts, cooldown bars, and much more.
Hymdall and Fenryr Encounters
Hymdall
is the first, and possibly hardest fight in this challenge. This fight is designed to test your ability to move around the platform you're given. As the fight progresses, the movement you need to do becomes increasingly intense; in conjunction with the unavoidable damage that this fight has, this will truly test whether or not you can kill Fenryr.
Hymdall's Abilities
Bloodletting Strike
is a quickly casted
melee
ability that strikes in a small cone in front of him, dealing 1.3M+ damage, reducing healing received by 25%, plus an additional 300k damage DoT every 2 seconds for 4 seconds.
Dancing Blade
is a quickly casted
ranged
ability in which Hymdall throws a blade at your location. When the blade reaches you, it will leave behind a whirling blade dealing 890k+ damage every two seconds while standing in the zone.
Horn of Valor
deals unavoidable 650-700k damage after a short cast, and summoning three Storm Drakes periodically to breathe lightning in a linear path.
Storm Drake
casts
Static Field
that deals 880k+ damage every two seconds whilst standing within it's path. During the life of the Static Field,
Ball Lightning
will be cast periodically. Each of these tornadoes deal an upwards of 1.1M damage.
Fenryr's Abilities
Whilst the
Hymdall
encounter is harder, Fenryr's encounter isn't far behind by comparison. This fight will once again, test your ability to move around the area you're given, time your
Disengages
and micro-manage the adds during the encounter. This fight is split into two phases.
Phase 1:
Claw Frenzy
instantly deals an upwards of 1.2M damage in a frontal cone, ignoring all armor and
immunity effects
.
Ravenous Leap
is a slow casted ability that causes Fenryr to leap at you, dealing a moderate amount of damage, but applying a permanent, stacking DoT that deals 78k damage per stack.
Unnerving Howl
is an interrupt for the duration of this phase, unless you are
resurrecting
your pet, this is no cause for concern.
Phase 2:
Whilst maintaining his three prior abilities, Fenryr gains an additional effect to
Unnerving Howl
.
Unnerving Howl
now summons three
Ebonclaw Worgs
with a stacking
Strength of the Pack
damage buff, in addition to it's interrupt effect.
Scent of Blood
is a casted fixate debuff in which Fenryr will chase you for 6 seconds. This will increase your movement speed by 125% for the duration of the effect.
General Strategy
Equip
The Apex Predator's Claw
if you have it. This will allow your pet to gain the passive benefits from Cunning, Tenacity and Ferocity, allowing you to choose Tenacity without taking a hit to your pet's damage.
Be sure your pet is in Tenacity spec if you are under-geared or not confident and do not have
The Apex Predator's Claw
.
Be sure to have a
Core Hound
for
Ancient Hysteria
and
Molten Hide
. Be sure to bring a
Quilen
for the
Stone Armor
for failed attempts to provide extra surviability to your pet when you have a lingering
Insanity
debuff.
Be sure you're using
Mend Pet
on cooldown.
Be sure you're using
Kill Command
on cooldown to maintain
Aspect of the Beast
if you are using the talent.
If you have
Hunter's Advantage
, it makes
Misdirection
more important to use off cooldown.
Strategy for Hymdall
Move Hymdall to either end of the room and begin the encounter in the middle. It's best that Hymdall remains in his starting location, but feel free to move position him how you choose.
You should always stay in the middle of the room to make movement easier.
Be sure when Hymdall casts
Dancing Blade
, to stay out of the middle of the path. The reason for this is because stacking Dancing Blades on-top of each other can make what would be a small mistake, a devastating one. Beware of your
Dancing Blade
placement at all times. This will make maneuvering to the safe zones easier.
Horn of Valor
is the most important ability in this fight to track. Aside from it's unavoidable damage, the Storm Drake's
Static Field
and
Ball Lightning
is extremely important to avoid. A general rule of thumb is; when the first Storm Drake is summoned, be sure to move one row away from it, and stand on the same side that the Storm Drake was summoned in, so when the Static Field begins to dissipate, you will easily be able to move into it, avoiding all future
Static Fields
for that Horn phase. Remember to dodge the tornadoes summoned by
Ball Lightning
, because they deal a lot of damage.
If you feel your pet is going to die; move as far away from Hymdall as you can and cast
Revive Pet
, but do not endanger yourself either.
Do not move into
Static Fields
to do this.
Your pet will not instantly gain threat on Hymdall,
Feign Death
or
Shadowmeld
if you're a Night Elf, immediately after resurrecting your pet to transfer aggro to your pet or Hati.
Strategy for Fenryr
Important Note: This map is not to be followed exactly. This is a rough guideline of what your rotation and positioning should look like while pointing out the areas that are off-limits.
Phase 1:
Keep a 35-40 yard distance between you and Fenryr at all times. The reason for this it to will allow you to use
Disengage
at the end of
Ravenous Leap's
cast, to avoid the initial and DoT damage. Remember that distance is key for both phases, as he will continue to cast
Ravenous Leap
throughout Phase 2 as well.
Phase 2:
Turn off your pet's
Thunderstomp
to avoid getting aggro on the worgs.
Shortly after pulling, Fenryr will cast
Unnerving Howl
, summoning three
Ebonclaw Worgs
with three stacks of
Strength of the Pack
. Kite them around the rotation provided above.
Keep in mind, Fenryr will give you a 125% movement speed buff from
Scent of Blood
, be sure to abuse that when kiting the worgs, especially if you cannot kill them.
That being said, you have three panic buttons throughout this encounter;
Aspect of the Turtle
,
Exhilaration
and
Aspect of the Cheetah
. These should be considered your last resort buttons. Whilst
Exhilaration
can be used more recklessly than the other two, it's best to reserve them for clutch situations.
Binding Shot
and
Tar Trap
are going to be your two most important tools throughout this fight if you cannot kill the worgs effectively. Be sure to time them effectively, so the effects do not overlap each other, or a
Scent of Blood
buff.
Do not recklessly use
Disengages
throughout this fight to get away from the worgs.
This is a death sentence if you do not follow this because you will be caught by multiple
Ravenous Leaps
. Reserve
Disengage
for
Ravenous Leap
, use it as instructed during Phase 1.
Use your
Disengages
effectively. On the map, I have listed approximate locations of good places to use
Disengage
. When at Fenryr's den, be sure to look around for steep declines in terrain, so you can maximize the amount time you are in the air, and distance you travel. Keep track of where you are, so you do not attempt to
Disengage
on an incline, thus not travelling, therefore getting hit by
Ravenous Leap
and potentially worgs, which could be enough to kill you if you do not have any of your defensive cooldowns.
"Off limits" zones are marked on the map to be wary of being around. Often times they have horrible terrain, object placement, or corners, which is enough to get you killed when you are kiting for a long time.
Important Note: Do not change the rotation direction you are moving in. The worgs move roughly at your movement speed, so any distance you gain is important, because of how NPC pathing works, they will slowly catch up to you by cutting corners. If you begin to cut corners or make sharp turns in your rotation, you will eventually die by doing it enough.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this challenge took me about ten hours and close to thirty wipes to complete collectively, and being "under-geared", this took a lot more time and strategy than someone who has more traits and gear than I do. Whilst a Hunter who has two legendaries, and a high item level can zerg this challenge, it takes an extra element of skill for those who cannot. This being said, follow my guide closely, and you will have your Fenryr in time. Good luck Huntmasters. :D

Very nice guide, gonna try following this. That said, I am missing a very general introduction section - both for people who found this after hearing 'you can tame Fenryr', and for the future, when nobody knows what are you on about here. Add a short intro who and where Fenryr is, and what are the conditions to taming... eg, I still don't know after this guide, if I can off both bosses as MM, and then switch spec to BM... and if I didn't hear some word about 'spawn', I wouldn't understand why killing Fenryr is needed to tame him.

Awesome guide. After the mythic buffs on 7.3 patch these encounters proved to be one hell of a challenge! I managed to kill Hymdall with your guide, although I switched to MM on Fenryr's phase 2 and kited him around the lake because it was easier for me. Sad thing is I didn't know I had to do both Hymdall and Fenryr in one go so I came back from work to kill Fenryr and I found myself not being able to tame him because his tameable version didn't spawn. 💔
It would be a great addition to your guide to clarify that (I'm saying this in a constructive manner; please don't misinterpret it, hahaha) given the weekly lockout, so it doesn't happen what happened to me (and several others) of having to wait until the weekly reset to try it again.
Thank you for this guide, it really helped to understand the encounters~♥

No longer soloable. Scent of blood doesnt come off and the wolves move too fast to be kited.

With the stat squish and the lack of artifacts, I think I'm just going to wait for 120. I hope we're still able to do this at 120 tho. They haven't said anything indicating that it won't be, but, ehhhh...

I'm not great at BM and, in BfA, I was able to do this pretty easy at level 111 (ilevel 227 with Apex Predator Claw). Thanks for the guide!
