Intro
There are many ways in WoW to make your character larger,
and they are continuously being removed from the game
. Some of them stack on each other, which can result in a mighty big character, and some overlap or do not combine at all. If your goal is to appear as large as possible, you've come to the right place. Much of this guide will make use of the ModScale (now called Mod Size) parameters of spell effects as listed in
Wowhead
's database, in which you can now search for "Mod Size" to find all of the effects with that property. Many of those effects will not apply to a PC, however. This guide will help you navigate the path to greatness (of size).
The List
Below is a list of effects, starting with those applicable to everyone. For reference, here's the model at normal size alongside a Core Hound hunter pet, and the model with a 30% growth buff, which is the most common:
-- Editor's note 10/7/2012: Need to add 'Embiggen', from Large Turnips in Ookie fight in Scenario Unga Ingoo ; stacks with Firewater! --
(20m) (Mod Size 30, doesn't stack)
Elixir of Giant Growth
OR (Mod Size 25, probably doesn't stack)
Winterfall Firewater
, but that currently is not dropping from Winterspring. This is reportedly a 'bug' that GMs know about, but hasn't been addressed since 4.0. Note that an Alchemist can make this last 40 minutes.
30% growth demo
(20 secs) (Mod Size 25)
Tosselwrench's Shrinker
, which gives you the
Tosselwrench's Shrinker
effect. Contrary to its name, it actually does make you larger.
(10 m) (Mod Size 30)
Vrykul Drinking Horn
gives you a Vrykul Helm (visual only) and makes you larger. This item has infinite uses, no cooldown, and is usable by everyone, so it's a great way to get 30% growth buff for free. You can get it by doing archaeology on Vrykul sites in Northrend. It is a rare discovery, but the archaeology system does not award repeats until you've gotten every item of a given rarity. Once I had access to Northrend, it took me somewhere around 6 hours to farm it up. YMMV.
Class-specific
(20 secs) (Mod Size 10)(stacks 10 times)
Kiril, Fury of the Beasts
grants a
Beast Fury
effect that grows you 10%, and it stacks up to 10 times. The effect lasts 20 seconds, but I suspect the duration is renewed every time it is triggered (15% chance per hit). As this is a new item, 390 level, I haven't seen it in action yet. Screenshots welcome! While this is an item, it's an Agility pole arm, which makes it sort-of class specific (for being a 2-hander if nothing else). Drops from the Deathwing raid. {kudos to Mataki for pointing it out to me}
(2m) (Mod Size 30)
Heroism
/
Bloodlust
(shaman spell) shares debuff with
Ancient Hysteria
(Beastmaster Hunter) and
Time Warp
(Mage spell), both of which work the same as the shaman spell. This ability does not stack with Elixir of Giant Growth, but does stack with Larger and Oranger (see Event Specific buffs below). Same visual effect as #1 above.
Faction-specific
(5m) (Mod Size 50)
Bom'bay's Grow buff
(horde only) -- used to be you could double up this buff by logging out, logging back in, and getting the buff again, but this technique has not yet been confirmed in 4.2.2. Also, this same effect is used by
Corestone of Patience
in Deepholm, and can be spell-stolen by mages.
(1h) (Mod Size 30) (food buff) 1x
Gigantic Feast
effect -- this counts as a food buff (made from
Gigantic Feast
). The Wowhead description doesn't mention a ModScale, but the in-game buff says 30%.
UPDATE 1/11/2010
-- as of patch 3.3.0, this no longer stacks with the Elixir of Giant Growth or Winterfall Firewater (MS25). It still stacks with the Dimensional Ripper / Ultrasafe Transporter effects, however.
Profession specific
(15sec) (Mod Size 30) Blacksmith plate-wearers only:
Bulwark of Kings
creates
Valor
UPDATE: rumor has it that in Cataclysm, you can no longer make this item, and existing items will no longer make you larger, but this needs confirmation.
(1hr ea) (ModScale 20) Engineering:
Soul-split: evil
,
Soul Split: Good
and 1x
Enlarge effect
(which now shows as a shrink effect?) from
Dimensional Ripper (Area52 only)
and
Ultrasafe Transporters
(engineers only). These are the longest lasting growth effects (on-par with Gigantic Feast), and thus are quite useful for multi-stacking. There's roughly a 3-3.5% chance for each of the 3 growth effects each time you teleport (9.5% chance of
some
growth effect), and a roughly 2.7% chance to get the shrink effect (data collected from 500+ recorded attempts since patch 3.0.1 through 4/2/2011). Be careful with these growth effects, as they cannot be removed, persist in death, and may prevent you from accessing tight areas (like the entry to Tournament of Champions, the Trade District vault in Stormwind, and so on). With one of these buffs, #1 stacks, but Winterfall Firewater will make you bigger than Elixir of Giant Strength, for some reason. With two of these buffs, #1 does not stack.
These buff timers will pause between logins, even across patch days, as long as (a) you don't have the rest effect, and (b) the server doesn't reset.
Note:
- these buffs will disappear when you use the Area52 Transporter if you are too big for the transporter. You can mitigate this effect by shrinking yourself ahead of time with Noggenfogger Elixir. If you ever want to get rid of the buff, simply shrink yourself and then stand in the doorway to the Area51 surface bank, or some other shallow doorway (the doorway to the Stormwind trade district bank works also). Cancel the shrink effect, and when the game realizes you're too large for the space you're standing in, it will cancel all size buffs on you. You can also have a warlock summon you to a tight space for the same result.
UPDATE: 12/1/2014
- (5m) (Mod Size 100)
World Shrinker
from the Draenor engineering item
World Shrinker
. This grows you to twice your normal size (or reduces the world by 50%, however you wanna play it). It does not seem to stack with anything, per the description and experimentation. It does not even stack with
Gift of the Giants
(see Location Locked below). It lasts 5 minutes, can be done every 15 minutes, but it auto-cancels if you enter combat. Untested: Soul-split stacking?
Event specific
(20m) (Mod Size 30) Hallow's End event:
Larger and Oranger
from
Hallow's End Candy
. This candy has a 14 day duration. Reminder: you have to finish Hallow's End Treats for Jesper! (or horde equivalent) before the candy vendor will sell you this candy.
Larger and Oranger demo
Location-locked
(10m) (Mod Size 100)
Gift of the Giants
Granted by the quest
Raining Down Destruction
(Northrend, Grizzly Hills, available to both sides). {Thanks,
Thraisenth
}
With a 2x size increase and a 10m duration, this goes quite nicely with the above effects. This does stack with #1 at a minimum. The buff remains if you drop the quest, but you will lose the buff if you leave the area. It's still possible to stack this long enough with the other stuff to get some really good screenies.
(30 sec) (Mod Size 50)
Red Mist
found in
Deepholm
, this temporary buff is applied when you enter into a wandering cloud of red mist along the rivers in the Crimson Expanse.
Shapeshifting: Large races
(there are tons of these, but the focus is on the ones that turn you into something larger than normal)
Deathbringer's Will
from ICC-25 procs to turn you into a
Taunka
, an oversized Tauren, for 30 seconds with 1m15s gaps. {thanks
Pintor!
}
Iron Boot Flask
from the Storm Peaks will turn you into an Iron Dwarf, which is a larger-than-normal dwarf. Not sure if it's particularly larger than a human or even a tauren.
Situational
(12 sec) (Mod Size 150)
The Chosen One
-- You get this while fighting Terokk, about 15 seconds in, if you have the highest threat. It does stack with Elixir of Giant Strength (but I wasn't quick enough to SS the proof -- very short duration on this one).
(2m) (ModScale 40)
General's Warcry
, from AV BG -- almost not worth mentioning, since the queues can be longer than the duration of other growth buffs, and you might not get the Warcry; but it does stack with Elixir of Giant Growth. If you had everything else going into AV, you wouldn't make it out of the cave before the shorter ones expired anyway, so this is only here for completeness. Bom'bay's growth buff would likely not last long enough to get the first Warcry (especially considering queue time).
(15 sec) (ModScale 35) Growth Ray (
unconfirmed
: from a charmed/possessed Sunseeker Engineer) -- with such a short duration and unpredictable acquisition, it's only listed for completeness.
(30 sec) (ModScale 15-25)
Bigger!
from the quest
Hah... you're not so big now!
(Alliance, Crafty Wobblesprocket, lvl 69, Fizzcrank Airstrip in the Borean Tundra in Northrend) This is only one of the several random effects you can get from the device used in this quest. Additionally, there aren't that many suitable targets in the vicinity, so it's hard to get.
(15sec) /kiss Mojo (a pseudo-buff for your mount, since it sizes to maintain a constant height, which makes it much larger when you turn into a frog)
- As of patch 3.0.8, this no longer works.
(~15s after drinking stops) (ModScale ~10)
Strength of the Frenzyheart
from the daily quest
Secret Strength of the Frenzyheart
(alliance only, Northrend, Sholozar Basin, lvl 76+). {Thanks,
Corpsepile!
}
The trick with this one is to drink the
Thunderbrew's Hard Ale
that you obtain while on the quest. There's no registered buff when this drink makes you larger, and the effect dissipates quickly. However, for every 10 seconds you drink the Thunderbrew, you grow about 10% larger. You don't shrink until you stop drinking for about 15-20 seconds. If you do this for about 5 minutes, you will reach a maximum size, which looks to be about 15x. It doesn't stack with #5. It very slightly stacks with #1 (almost unnoticeable at max size). UPDATE: 8/23/09: As of patch 3.2, you will randomly stand and puke and get stunned when you try to drink this stuff, interrupting your drinking. Get another mug quick, and you might keep the chain going.
UPDATE: 12/6/2010 -- This drink no longer makes you larger, as of 4.0.3a (or perhaps earlier).
(?) Magister's Terrace boss effect (pending research) -- this guy generates wisps/sparks of some sort. Every time you kill one, you get a powerful growth buff, but if you get too many you explode. This happened to me once, and I got about 5-6x larger before I died. It would be interesting to see what would happen if I already had a few growth effects up at the time - the room has an enormous vaulted ceiling, but growth effects self-cancel if they activate where there's insufficient room to grow. This avoids camera problems and awkward clipping, but might also save you from the death effect of the over-buff in this case.
NEW!
(30 sec) (ModScale ? 25 ?)
Glyph of Direciton
-- if a Hunter sets you as their Misdirect target, and has this glyph, you will get larger. It seems to stack with some effects, but not all; volunteers needed for research.
Summary
Current max stacking growth combo with photo reference:
2.4x
(Heroism/Bloodlust/Ancient Hysteria/Time Warp + Larger and Oranger + Soul Split: Evil + Soul Split: Good).
Note that because this uses Hysteria, the buff will only last a short while. However, Larger and Oranger + Soul Split: Evil + Soul Split: Good will last nearly an hour, provided you buy enough candy to refresh Larger and Oranger periodically (with an infinite supply from the vendor and a 1 minute cooldown between noms, this isn't too difficult).
(previous record:
1.7x H/B/AH/TW + LO
)
You can get bigger with the Gift of the Giants quest in Northrend (from #9), but you can't leave the area with the buff. 2.0*1.3*1.3=
3.38x
(Heroism/Bloodlust/Ancient Hysteria/Time Warp + Larger and Oranger + Gift of the Giants). (4.9x coming soon, adding 2 Soul Splits)
Once upon a time, many of these effects would stack, and you could reach 3 times to 12 times your normal size for a reasonable duration. But that was pre-Cataclysm. Evidently, Deathwing suppresses growth effects. Perhaps he doesn't want anyone getting big enough to threaten him? Now, thusfar the best I've seen is Larger and Oranger combined with Elixir of Giant Growth, which seem to stack for about 1.7x size (see attached images). In the next few days I hope to witness a Transporter Effect stack with this. Then I will update the max stacking growth combo.
Note: even if you're not a Tauren male, the largest PC, one of the
transporter malfunctions
you can get turns you into a random PC race of either side every time you teleport or sometimes when you simply relog. So it's still remotely possible you could max out your size by randomly turning into a male Tauren. As another consideration, there's a trinket that Terokk drops that can turn you into one of 3 models of Arakkoa, which are about as big as male Tauren, maybe a little bigger even.
Bigger may not be better, but for some, it is more fun. :)
History
My
original post
started 12/25/2008 (stickied once) is similar, messier, and has some historical information about how things used to stack back in 3.x.
Data was researched and accumulated by myself and contributions from many other folks credited within the text above. If you contributed (via the old thread) and I did not credit you, please let me know and I'll add you.

A really great guide, with one added suggestion: Remove the crossed out text. It's not needed. :)

Nice guide. :)
You could add the "Potion of Illusion".
By using it you can copy a player using the "Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest" or "Vial of the Sands" mount. While transformed, you can use all your Spells - very funny. And you can also grow in size using the tips you posted, turning yourself into an oversized mount that can use all abilitys. :D

2 things i did not see here that can be stacked to make yourself look huge if you are on a mount (one turns you into alittle gnome so you will not look very big without being on mount.
1)
Vrykul Drinking Horn
This is a rare find from the Vrykul race using the archaeology profession.
2)
Burgy Blackheart's Handsome Hat
This item is loot from the rare mob
Burgy Blackheart
who is found at the south of the shimmering expanse (under water just a little north of the boats). This one will make the size of your mount bigger but you transform into a gnome so without a mount your actual size shrinks
They stack with each other and when you are mounted they make your mount 3-400% bigger (i dont know the exact size im just estimating)

I would like to know which of these effect the Hunter Pets, as far as I can tell only the Shaman/BeastMasterHunter/Mage Abilities make the Pet Bigger, can a Hunter use that Core Hound Ability on the Other Pets the Hunter Has? I want to make my Brothers Devilsaur Very Very Large. also i think you should add Tauren and Gnomes get Larger Mounts & Hunter Pets Grow as you Level them.

You've omitted the gnomish shrink ray backfire. This is approximately a 250% mod with a 30s duration. Even though it is situation it's still really powerful and can be applied anywhere with some luck.
I should note this guide has some misinformation where it claims some effects will stack with certain other effects but not others I.E. gigantic feast stacking with engi transporter malfunctions. All grow effects come in 2 flavors, stacking and non stacking. If an effect does not stack then it will not stack with anything, period. If it DOES stack then it will stack with anything else that also stacks, period.
The confusion is often caused when players "test" these effects by using a weaker one and then use something such as the feast which makes them bigger then the first effect. When they grow to 30% from 20% and see an increase, the incorrectly assume the two stack. In reality they don't.
Also important, Smite's compass is HUGE for growth stacking (pun intended). It will increase the actual scale of the mount you're riding more then anything else in the game. Well beyond even a normal Tauren.

This mob is worth mentioning!
生病的黑熊
It has an ability called
生存本能
which makes you bigger. I've only heard about it so it needs testing... but apparently having multiple bears attack you can cause this to stack. Video:

A mob in the WoD slags dungeon, an ogre mage of sorts, has a spell stealable size buff as well. Doesn't last long.

The item
幽灵钢铁海盗帽
is a recent addition to the game in 6.2. This is a toy that has a short cast time, but it stacks with the World-Shrinking Device and the Potion of Growth. The toy doesn't say it in the tooltip, but the transformation makes your character a HUGE skeleton.

The toy Dazzling Rod allows for significant size increase. It's sort of a laser tag game: you throw a projectile, and anyone else using the rod will get stunned if they get hit. You gain one stack for every hit and lose them all if you get hit, up to 10 stacks I believe. Each stack makes you bigger.

Hi guys!
I know they nerfed the size buff but I was wondering which is the actual potion/item combination to gain a large size at the moment in WoW?

Hey man nice guide, I do have one important question however...
Will "Vrykul Drinking Horn" be able to stack with "Gigantic Feast"? I really need to know before i start farming my cooking skill for hours and get the ingredients.
Thx anyone who answers ;)

Bad news, it looks like Larger and Oranger and Elixir of Giant Growth no longer stack in BFA. Just tried, and there's no difference with them both on. Applied em in different orders, and nada.
