Important note! I will no longer be updating this guide, reason being that I have no time with eveything that's going on in my life currently. Sorry!
Intro
The things you should know before building your garrison this way:
This should be done on an alt since having your garrison this way will give little to no help gearing your character
The character needs to be level 100 and have a level 3 garrison since you will need to upgrade your Herb Garden and Mines to level 3
I wrote this guide based on my income on a low populated server, it may not work as well or it may work even better if you're on a highly populated server
Small Buildings
The building that is a must is the
Salvage Yard, level 3.
This will allow you to get more greens and blues which you will Disenchant, and more crafting materials (herbs, ores and leather)
You should not build a small building that's related to your profession, as that is simply a waste of the slot.
Engineering Works, level 3
. This allows you to build various scopes, gadgets and even pets, which can be sold on the Auction House for a nice amount of gold.
Gem Boutique, level 2
. In this building, you can use the leftover ores and herbs you have, and craft uncommon quality gems.
Gem Boutique, level 2
. As mentioned in the Enchanting tab, you'll use this to craft uncommon quality gems.
Enchanter's Study, level 1
. You only need this building to Disenchant WoD greens and blues that you don't plan on using. You can use the dust to start a work order for Fractured Temporal Crystals.
Enchanter's Study, level 1
. Use it to Disenchant WoD greens and blues. You can use the dust to start a work order for Fractured Temporal Crystals.
Engineering Works, level 3
. You can use this building to craft various gadgets, scopes and pets which you can sell on the Auction House.
I, myself, am a Leatherworker, so I built a
Gem Boutique, level 3
, but level 2 is just as fine, since it's only used for crafting uncommon quality gems.
An
Enchanter's Study, level 3
, but again, level 1 is just as fine. As I said before , I only use Enchanter's Study to Disenchant WoD items, and if I have some Draenic Dust leftover, I start a shipment of
Fractured Temporal Crystal
.
But, if you have the mix of two professions I named above, as in, you're both an Enchanter and a Jewelcrafter, you should build the buildings that don't match your professions, because that simply allows you to have a bigger variety of goods to sell. You may even see that as having 4 primary professions at once.
Medium Buildings
The most important medium building is the
Barn, level 3
. It allows you to trap elite beasts in Nagrand, which produce food, fur or leather, depending on what beast you trap. It is also a source of
Savage Blood
which sells well. Or you can save them and create gear/weapon upgrades, which sell for thousands of gold.
The prices on those upgrading items that require Savage Blood. These can only be crafted with the Profession you have, not with Profession Buildings.
As you can see, the prices dropped a lot since 6.1 launched, that's because you can buy Savage Bloods and create daily items (such as Burnished Leather) with Primal Spirits now, but that only means you'll be able to sell the items more often.
Another building that's worth having is the
Trading Post, level 2
. Not only does it allow you to have an auctioneer in your own garrison, it also offers a variety of traders which visit every day and sell crafting materials in exchange for Garrison Resources. See
this comment
for more detailed information.
About large buildings...
Large buildings really do not provide any ways of significant gold income on their own, but there are 2 that are, in my opinion, better for farming materials and gold than others.
1st ->
Mage Tower/Spirit Lodge, level 3
. It allows you to travel around Draenor faster and acquire Apexis Crystals and
Mission Completion Orders
from Work Orders.
2nd ->
Barracks, level 3
. Increases your follower limit to 25, meaning you can do more missions, meaning more Salvage Crates. It also lets you have a Bodyguard while in Draenor, making trapping a bit easier.
Other buildings
Herb Garden, level 3
is of course, a must have. A daily income of herbs and work orders which give even more herbs, who would say no to that?
Mines, level 3
. A really large daily income of ore, and with the Mine Carts spawning a lot, you can get extra Primal Spirits too, which you can trade to a Primal Trader in your garrison for Savage Blood or any other crafting material.
Fishing Shack, level 3
. It saves you the trouble of having to go fishing all over Draenor since you can catch every fish available right here, in your garrison. And gives you a follower!
New in 6.1!
With the introduction of
Salty Squid Roll
and other 125 stat food, having Cooking and a Fishing Shack is really a great choice right now, since both the cooked food and fish sell really well.
As if missions weren't already worth doing, followers can now get the
Treasure Hunter
trait, which increases the gold gained from a mission by 100%.
And, trapping animals in Nagrand is a lot easier now, due to the recent changes, you can now simply group with 4 of your friends, or random people via the Premade Finder, and you'll all get a caged animal when someone traps it.
About this guide
If you came here looking for fast ways to make gold, you're in the wrong place. This is not a way to make gold fast, this is a way I found that gives a stable income of gold at all times.
I play on a low populated server, and having built my garrison this way (as a Leatherworker) has given me more or less 30 thousand gold in the past month.
Most of my income comes from selling herbs, ore, draenic dust and savage blood. I use all the Primal Spirits I get on buying Savage Blood.
I'm sorry if you didn't find this guide to be helpful.
This is the first guide I've ever made, so if there are any mistakes, please let me know so I can fix them.
Thank you for reading my guide, if you found it helpful, feel free to rate or leave a comment. Good luck and have fun!

Could you expand on how you make money with the gem boutique for a non-jc? Is it just for the daily?

So the character i'm planning on doing this with has Inscription only, and my main character has both JC and Enchanting so which small buildings should i have? Great guide overall!

A very nice guide.
Savage Blood are selling for less now, but I think those upgrades are still holding their value nicely.

I may be wrong, but in my experience it is better to have the profession building that matches your primary crafting profession. This allows for twice as many soulbound profession cooldown mats to be made each day, and with level 700 in your profession, a level 3 hut with a level 100 follower assigned, you can quickly get the 200-250 mats needed to make the upgrades which on our realm always bring in at least 30k (inscription for me).

Not a bad guide by any means, but I think you're missing a few points.
1. While the Barn does produce Savage Blood which can be turned to gold via the AH, the Inn (Lvl 3) provides Treasure Hunting missions which can be run a few times a day for the same amount of gold with much less time involved (and is in my opinion more alt friendly).
2. Salvage Yard pairs very well with an Enchanting Hut. Not only does it allow you to DE the blues you get from salvage crates but you can then turn those dust into temporal crystals (via fragment work orders) which can be sold for 350-550g each (server prices vary).
Here is what I've found to be a solid alt-garrison setup. It involves the least amount of effort (ie: my alts never have to leave the garrison) and provides the best return.
Small: Prof x1, Salvage, Enchanting Hut
Medium: Trading Post and Inn
Large: Barracks (25 followers) and War Mill (follower upgrades)
*If you are only after gold/resources, you could swap out the War Mill. I run the War Mill to gear followers for the raid missions -- may as well get real gear on my alts while I'm farming the garrisons.
Best of luck!

This is a good guide. As other comments point out some stuff this guide is lack, I won't rehash it. You did a good job for your first time. I look forward to your next guide.

You really should get rid of that Savage Blood selling picture, or update to a recent one. Savage Blood sells for less than 300g now.
In fact, the whole guide needs updating. A lot changed with 6.1 and should be reflected in here.

Hi,
Thanks this has been helpful. But one question that was not answered (or i cant find) i have an alt, that has both profs as gathering (herb/skinner) and I'm not sure which buildings then to make. I would want something that would compliment my gathering profs but also bring in some gold.
If someone could tell me which buildings would be best please :)
Thanks

You really need to update all the pics that half gold values in them. Savage Blood goes for 100-110g now, the upgrades (there are no more Powerful upgrades etc.) only go for about 2.5-3K.
It's always a bit dangerous to include pics with gold prices in because of how they can change over time.
