For players without a guild, or whose guilds don’t run raids, getting into endgame raids beyond LFR can be daunting to the point where they never do get into those runs when current.
This guide is intended to help such players find their way into runs—and perhaps to even get to the level of killing the final bosses of the game, at the hardest difficulties, without being part of a regular group.
This guide does not cover what goes on in the raid itself, the mechanics of fights, how to play your role well in the fights, etc. You will also need to get yourself to a suitable gear level (ilvl) to be considered for runs. Please refer to the many other
Wowhead guides
for those things.
Are you ready to raid?
Before joining PUG raid groups, you should have done at least the following:
Developed a decent level of skill playing your class role. You can refer to the
Wowhead Class Guides
, or websites like
Icy Veins
.
Run the raid in the LFR version enough to be familiar with the basics of the zone(s) and fights. Keep in mind that higher levels of difficulty in raids add more complications to each fight, so there will still be things to learn even if you have mastered LFR.
In general, you will want to have completed each difficulty of a raid before proceeding to the next (e.g., run through all of Normal before starting into Heroic). Note that strategies for particular bosses can change quite dramatically between difficulties because of changes to the fight mechanics.
Equipped sufficiently high level gear that your item level is adequate for the raids.
Reforged, enchanted, and gemmed, your gear appropriate to your class specialization. See the
Wowhead Class Guides
or
Ask Mr. Robot
for recommendations.
Acquired suitable flasks and potions to use during the fights.

can serve as an alternative to flasks, although it is generally not as effective as a proper flask (especially for Alchemists). As you get into higher level raid fights, you will generally need to move to a flask to maximize dps or tanking health. Healers may still find this useful at top levels as it gives both spirit and intellect, plus the additional stamina is always nice.
While some groups welcome people who are new to the fights, other groups will expect you to already be familiar with the fight mechanics and strategies. You will likely want to have reviewed some of the many online guides (and video guides) to the fights you plan to PUG for. This is especially important for the top level fights (Heroic raiding, which is to be renamed Mythic in the 6.0 patch).
Tools for Finding a Group
There are a few widely-used options for successfully getting yourself added to a non-LFR raid run.
The new built-in Group Finder, expected in the Warcraft 6.0 patch, will replace much of this. Although, I expect many will still find OpenRaid useful for scheduling runs rather than just trying to get into a run on the fly.
The built-in “
Other Raids
” interface is probably where you should start. However, prior to the coming 6.0 release where it will be replaced with a new “Group Finder”, it is awkwardly placed in the game UI.
To find and use the Other Raids UI:
Go to the “Social” UI (aka: friends list. Default keyboard shortuct: “O”).
Click the “Raid” tab on the bottom right.
Click the “Other Raids” button at the top.
Now here’s the really weird thing:
The options for normal and heroic raids are, currently, pretty well useless in the UI — almost no one uses them that I’ve seen. Instead, to try to get invited into Normal difficulty raids, select the appropriate Flex wing(s)and set your comment to be something like “fresh Normal only” or “Normal starting on Sha - Malkorok” (if you don’t mind skipping some bosses) — specifying which bosses you’re willing to start on (not necessarily Sha or Malk, those are just examples here).
OpenRaid
is a website you can use to get into planned raids on a one-off basis. It’s great if you can plan ahead to have a set time available. Sometimes you can get into a run on OpenRaid on short notice, but mostly you’ll want to plan at least a day ahead. The further ahead you sign up for a raid, the more likely you are to get added to the run.
OpenRaid has two regional websites:
For U.S. realms:
http://openraid.us/
For European realms:
http://openraid.eu/
You will need to register on their website, and link the character(s) you want to be able to join raids with.
One of the features of OpenRaid is feedback on players/characters. To get good feedback (and thereby be more likely to be picked for future runs through the site) show up on time for raids you join, stay for the entire scheduled time, and be friendly and respectful to the other players.
Be sure to make note of who you ran with. I use the screenshot function — F13 by default — at the beginning and end of the run to note who was there and who stayed for the whole run. Then you can give feedback on everyone when filling out the event evaluation on OpenRaid. The convention is to give 5 stars by default to everyone who was there for the whole run, unless they were rude or otherwise causing problems for the run. If someone was particularly helpful, supportive, or fun, you may also want to include a comment about that in the event evaluation.
oQueue
is often abbreviated to just “OQ”.
There has been some controversy with the oQueue plug-in, to the point where leading plug-in site Curse has chosen to not list it at all. That said, a significant number of players still use it.
oQueue download
.
Warning: The user interface can be a little awkward to use, so here’s the minimum to know about using it when you want to find a particular raid to run (of any difficulty):
You can open the OQ window by clicking the button that gets added to your mini-map.
Select the second tab “Find Premade”.
After loading up a bunch of raids in the list, when you are ready to request to get on their waitlist, click the text “Paused…” near the top right of the window. That’s actually a pause button that will stop the list changing while you are trying to click on stuff.
Optionally, click the spy-glass icon (right-most in the small set of icon buttons near the top left), and put a fragment of text to filter the list. (E.g., “gar” will filter the list to mostly Garrosh runs — which people enter in various forms like “Garrosh”, “Gary”, etc.)
It is expected that the built-in Group Finder, coming in the Warlords of Draenor expansion, will largely—if not completely—eliminate the need for this plug-in.
Trade Chat
is typically the least effective of the options here, but every once in a while it works for people.
Go to a faction city. (Any one will do, but if you are hoping to do one of the Pandaria raids, your faction’s Shrine city in Vale of Eternal Blossoms is best so you will be closer to the raid entrance.)
Make sure you are in the Trade channel: /join trade
Watch for people looking for players to join their run. LFG = Looking For Group (typically used by solo players wanting to start or join a group). LFM = Looking For More (an existing group is looking to fill one or more spots in their group).
Send a whisper reply to anyone who posts a request you'd like to join. Typically, you should include your role(s) (mdps, rdps, heals, or tank), your class, and equipped item level (ilvl). If applicable, include your off-spec (with ilvl) and any other special considerations (e.g., “I can 3rd tank on Shaman”). Finally, include your progress on the raid (e.g., 14/14F if you’ve killed all bosses in Flex; 12/14N if you’ve killed the first 12 bosses on Normal; 4/14H if you’ve done the first 4 bosses on Heroic).
To list yourself for others to consider adding you to a group, post to the trade channel something like:
LFG SoO Normal; 546 Paladin dps (can 3rd tank where needed); 6/14N
or:
LFG SoO Flex wing 3 or 4; 532 Resto Shaman (527 ele off-spec)
When posting like this to Trade Chat, avoid posting more than once every 3-5 minutes. People tend to look down on frequent repeat posting and will be less likely to invite you to a group.
Voice Chat
Voice chat can allow for much faster and efficient communication amongst players. Especially when learning a fight, it can be an essential tool.
Many groups require participants to use a specific voice chat tool in order to be included in a run, so it is best to be ready to support that. You don’t necessarily need to be able to speak (if you don’t have a microphone, have a speech impairment, or are just shy about using your voice), but being able to listen is a frequent requirement in many raid groups. It is highly advisable to use headphones instead of speakers when using voice chat. Otherwise you could likely cause feedback noise that will make it difficult-to-impossible to properly communicate. Pretty much any headphones will do. Some players like to get headphones with a mounted microphone, but that is entirely up to you.
Amongst the various voice chat tools, the most widely used is currently Ventrilo (commonly abbreviated to just “Vent”), so you should have at least that installed and configured to work with your setup. You could run into groups using other tools, so you may want to be prepared to add those to your applications, or accept that you’ll have to forgo those runs.
Voice chat can add to the social fun and camaraderie of a run, but it’s important to be mindful of when is okay for joking around, and when it is time to focus on the fight and leave the channel clear for directions from a raid leader.

While not optimized for gaming, many users are already familiar with Skype, so it can make for an easier voice option when playing with people who find some of the other options harder to use.

Because of the problems people have had with the game’s built-in voice-chat, it is very rarely used.
A further consideration is that if you are disconnected from the game, you will also be disconnected from the voice chat. Other voice chat options can remain active if the game disconnects you, making it easier to stay in the group because you can let them know what is going on.
To turn on the built-in Voice Chat:
Go to the system menu (default keyboard shortcut: “esc”).
Select “System”.
Select “Voice” from the left-side column.
Check the “Enable Voice Chat” checkbox.
While there, you can configure the various Voice settings to your liking.
Being useful beyond just your role in fights
There are various ways you can help out during a run, beyond just fulfilling your role in fights. Doing so can make it easier for you to get into raid groups, be kept in the group for the duration of a run, and be invited to future runs by the other players.
Useful mounts
Some areas within raids allow for mounting, so mounts that provide services can come in handy. These mounts provide a repair vendor, as well as selling
被邪能烧焦的书卷
for players that want to switch glyphs/talents between fights.
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
/
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
.
雄壮远足牦牛缰绳
also provides a reforge vendor (which will be changed in patch 6.0 since reforging will no longer be available in the game).
Useful profession items
Note that many of these profession items are BoE and do not require the profession to be used. Check the auction house if you cannot craft your own.
The
烹饪
profession can create useful buff food you can bring along to share.
The current best is the
熊猫人八宝汤面餐车
which gives players access to a free stack of 5
熊猫人八宝汤面
(6 if they eat one right away and replenish the stack to 5). The treasure noodles give “300 in a useful stat for 1 hour”. The other noodles give lower amounts of buff (
什锦汤面餐车
,
汤面餐车
).
You can alternatively set out banquets, although most runs will have someone put out a noodle cart, negating the value of a banquet.
熊猫人盛宴
is the best banquet, providing a 275 stat bonus. You don’t have to be able to create the noodle cart kits or banquets to be able to use them, or even have any cooking skill. If you can’t craft your own, you should be able to find some on the auction house.
The
工程学
profession can provide access to:
基维斯
for repairs.
移动邮箱
for mailbox access.
铭文
has the ability to craft the BoE
坚韧符文卷轴 III
, which grants an 8% boost to Stamina for raid members. That is slightly less than the 10% Stamina buff given by some character spells, but useful if your raid group does not have anyone with one of those spells.
制皮
has the ability to produce various BoE drums which can offer raid utility:
遗忘王者战鼓
if no one in your raid has a stats-buff spell.
暴怒之鼓
if no one in your raid has a “Bloodlust”/“Heroism” type spell.
速度之鼓
can provide a short boost to speed for raid members, which can be nice when going to the next boss area in some zones.
Class-specific raid tools
A Beast Mastery
猎人
has access to a number of exotic pets that can provide raid-wide buffs (in the absence of player classes that would normally provide those buffs to the group). If you are a hunter, you are strongly advised to have a Beast Mastery spec and be ready to help the raid out with one of those pets.
The most frequently called for is the
孢子蝠
with the
ability which provides a spell haste buff.
A
法师
can
召唤餐桌
which provides free stacks of conjured food for replenishing health and mana (particularly appreciated by healers who can be left low on mana at the end of fights).
The various mage portal spells are also sometimes appreciated, usually at the end of a run.
A
术士
has the very useful
召唤仪式
spell to create a summoning stone at nearly any location.
They also have the
制造灵魂之井
spell which gives the whole raid access to healthstones—a free heal which does not share a cooldown with potions (although, in patch 6.0, it will share a cooldown with health potions).

Future
Players will likely continue to come up with new ways to bring groups together, and Blizzard can be expected to continue to refine the in-game tools to support that (such as with the new Group Finder coming in the Warlords of Draenor expansion).
The author’s intention is to continue to update this guide as new approaches evolve, and old approaches fade away. To that end, comments and suggestions are quite welcome.
Edit Log
2014-09-25: Clarified LFR & other difficulties as recommended before higher difficulties. Added LFR to abbrevations list.

One tip;
In your "Are you ready to raid" section, maybe suggest doing flexible raiding over LFR.
The mechanics in Flexible raids are actually a lot more similar to Normal modes, and you only need a suggested ilvl of 510 to start doing flexibles.
LFR doesn't really prepare you for normals, especially in terms of gear.
Other than that, it's a pretty good guide!

Great guide! I've been soloing for years and find myself in the position of needing to join raid groups for the better level gear to do some of the questlines, but didn't really know much about raiding in general. I learned a lot just from reading your guide, thank you!
