Introduction: What is a Shaman?
• A

is a class that focuses on the elements. They can be healers or damage dealers ( DD ) – as either ranged-casters ( rcDD ) or melee ( mDD ). This guide is intended for those just beginning to play their shaman. It is split into two main parts: the first part contains basic information on talent choices, stat priorities, gemming, and enchanting; the second part is meant to be an in-depth look at some of the aspects of playing a shaman.
• This guide will be covering the Elemental Shaman ( rcDD ) spec ONLY, and, therefore, should not – in fact, cannot – be used as a guide for/by Restoration (healing) or Enhancement ( mDD ) shamans.
• This guide is meant to prepare you for entering your first raid, getting you into the flow, and getting your prepared for higher levels of raiding. Although past Medium-core raiding i hope you will be ready to be doing much of this on your own. And hopefully this guide will help you get to this point.
• I would like to request that if you comment on this guide that your comment be (If you are critiquing the guide) be constructive and not hateful.
• It should also be noted that i will almost continuously be updating this guide with new information and changed information so feel free to check back every once in a while to see if something in here was changed.
• As a final note i will keep this guide updated through Warlords of Draenor as best i can.
PART 1: Before you begin
RACES
Trolls: They would have to be the best race, overall, across both factions, for an Elemental Shaman. Their
狂暴
racial ability increases haste by 20% for 10 seconds, meaning you can cast more spells and have more chances to proc a second or third spell. And their racial passive,
野兽杀手
, increases damage dealt to beasts by 5%.
Goblins: Their racial passive

is a 1% increase to all casting speed.
Orcs: I consider their racial ability,

, to be less useful than

Draenei: The HoT race…literally, and in more than one way. Their racial ability is

: Optional on most boss fights; useful on trash. There are a few fights in Mists of Pandaria raiding, and some achievements, that can use this glyph to incredible effect.

: Optional on most boss fights. Good for fights with extended damage being done to the shaman. It is only a 10% damage reduction, but it will help your – and your healers’ – mana.

• Critical Strike Rating is a reforge stat and should be avoided if possible on any gear. Your

crits automatically, basically making this stat useless.

PART 3: An in-depth look at an Elemental Shaman
• Tier 1 talents are defensive. I find

nice because I have it macroed to also use
at the same time for an increase to damage reduction for high/inteanse damage periods during a fight.

is a nice talent choice as well because of its absorption.
• Tier 2 talents are movement-oriented.
is a soft root (breaks on damage) that lasts for 5 seconds – enough time to hit it, turn around, go

, and run like hell.
陷地图腾
is really nice because it is a AoE root/slow. The downside to it is that if it is in range of any mob that is rooted by it, and that mob can melee it and cannot melee anything else around it the totem will be destroyed.
风行图腾
is a raid wide root and slow removal totem. Very nice for fights like Council of Elders to break out of sand traps.
• Tier 3 talents are all related to your totems.
收回图腾
is a VERY nice talent for using during times of high damage (
治疗之泉图腾
), or if a double stun is needed (
). It is also good to be used for Fear, Charm, and sleep effects (
战栗图腾
), as well as for Slowing and/or Rooting (
地缚图腾

).

is a limited use talent but still useful in situations where you need to move a totem quickly to drop it into a pile of mobs (

• Tier 4 talents are for the most part useless with the exception of

has it's uses (Although few and far between) for Achievement runs. Mostly it is used for achievements that require a lot of AoE . It will also become viable once you get alot of Siege of Ogrimmar gear in that it is a burst CD that comes off CD more often then say
升腾
. For your average everyday dungeons, soloing, and raiding you should be going with
元素回响
, until you get to the gear level mentioned earlier in this bullet point.
• Tier 5 talents are all healing related. I generally use
先祖指引
due to the raid wide healing, however it is based off of your damage output. With that in mind at lower gear levels i would suggest using
涌动之泉
as it provides a larger bonus to your sustained healing during a fight.
• Tier 6 talents are for the most part all viable. Although it really depends on your gear and what you’re doing.
元素冲击
is viable while you are still under 540. Although it becomes less viable during challenge modes, and should not be used until you are 510+ in item level. Below 510 I would suggest using
元素尊者
. The stronger elementals will increase your DpS more then elemental blast until you reach that gear level. Once you are item level 540+ it is suggested you go with
. The debuff aplied from
will increase your dps a fair bit from the
and from
熔岩爆裂
. Replace
元素冲击
with this in your raid rotation.
• For doing trash, and bosses with lots of adds (e.g. Tortos encounter, with the Vampiric Bats), I would suggest using
. Hitting more targets even at the reduced initial damage does a lot of damage – compensating for the reduced initial damage.
•
is a useful glyph – for me at least – as it heals me slightly over time. The heal, however, is small.
•
is an odd glyph for me: it reduces the duration of the Fire Elemental and the cool-down of the totem by 50%, reducing the amount of damage it can deal by half, but you can have it out more often. To me, this glyph is useless, with, essentially, no DpS value at all.
•
is a pretty nice glyph. Having replaced the Glyph of Unleashed Lightning –
may be cast while moving but cast time is increased by 5% –, it would seem Blizzard wanted to give shamans a slight increase to their survivability. I tend to use this glyph if I need to be able to survive A LOT of damage, but, for the most part, I tend to avoid it in favor of

should only be used if you have mana issues. For example when soloing stuff and you need to heal, and also need a constant regenerate to your mana. Thunderstorm can only go so far to regenerate mana, having a cool-down (non-glyhped) of 45 seconds. As
can be cast almost constantly and with the use of
is a mana free spell this is a quick and easy way to regain your mana.
Gemming Changes
• Once you are fully geared from Throne of Thunder (Raid Finder is acceptable; item-level of 502 or higher, overall). You should be switching over to

in your yellow sockets and blue sockets as all of your hit should be coming from your gear at that point.
• Once you hit an ilvl of 525 or so (assuming you have your Legendary Meta gem), you should be switching to a mastery build:

in blue slots to grant the bonus ONLY if it is 180 intellect.
Rotation Changes
• The biggest rotation change I made when I started playing my shaman more was to try to line up my

so that it would be cast and then the buff that it grants affected my

• I do not recommend using
at all, because the only two reasons to use it are to kick off your

burst and to apply a stronger
and get a
熔岩爆裂
in at the same time. The damage increase that
gives to your

is applied to each cast when it is casted.
熔岩爆裂
has the increased 50% damage ON CAST. Not only if it hits a target with your
up on it. And with using it before burning

the GCD would be better used on something else (Refreshing

instant cast, or even a

stacks)
• When refreshing your
it is best to refresh it with less than 10 seconds left. I usually try to refresh at 5 or so seconds.
• Your elementals are affected by your buffs as they change, meaning if you lose a buff giving you 3000 haste your elemental will lose the same.
• During your
升腾
you may have noticed your
changed into a new spell. I do not suggest using
熔岩弹射
unless you are attempting certain AoE heavy achievements, or needing to down a large amount of adds in a very short amount of time .
升腾
is best used as a single target burst cooldown.

It is arguable as to which of the professions is better, but the dps gain to your secondary stats from Engineerings
and Blacksmithings

gems. It should be noted with these professions that to level them from scratch without the help of a farming profession on the account/server is very painful and very expensive.
PART 4: Macros/Addons
I use a lot of macros and figured I would link them here for your use and to give you a few ideas for your own macros. I will give a brief description of what it is used for below each macro.

• I use this macro to interrupt a target that is not something I am focused on at the current moment. In the line where it says /target you want to replace that with whatever the target’s name is. If you need to interrupt a warlocks cast while targeting a mage you simply put in the macro script /target Warlock (Assuming his name is Warlock) and it will cast on him instead of your current target.

I use a bunch of addons with my Shaman that I have found useful, although you should build your own user interface these are a few addons I use. All of these may be obtained from the Curse Client, or from the Curse Site which I will include a link with the addon.

This addon is a tracker on the casting speed of your totems and the duration that they will be up. It will track ALL totems including the ones spawned from the minor glyph (

This addon gives you moveable totem bars that show all of your totmes and do not affect your normal bars. It cleans them up and gives you more slots for keybinds/buttons. However I do not think that this addon has keybind support.
• ReforgeLite (

This addon makes Reforging faster and more productive by calculating how reforging everything can get you as close to the hit cap and then by maximizing everything you can put into haste/mastery. It has stats weights which you can enter into it as well as presets with your characters spec.

Recount/Skada Damage Meter is a must have for any DpS. It allows you to get an accurate amount for your DpS.

This addon is required for raiding. It gives you bars that are customizable that show a bosses abilities and what their cool-down is as well as using a raid warning type system for a lot of the abilities. It also has an audio part that gives you a countdown to particular abilities as well as a pull timer tool.
