Leveling yet another alt can be boring. Especially if you, like me, have played the game for several years. If you’re looking for an easy way to level up, without having to quest, you should read on. Note that this isn’t a power leveling guide, far from it.
If you are new to the game, I don’t recommend using this strategy. You don’t want to end up as level 60, and have no clue how to play your character, because all you did was kill single mobs, and loot chests.
This guide is designed to make leveling easy, not fast. Rare spawns have different respawn timers, and when you’ve cleared a zone, you will have to wait for all the rare spawns to respawn. During this time, you can quest, do dungeons, have fun in some battlegrounds, or level your professions. Finding herbs or mining ores grant experience points as well. Or you can do like me, go play on your main character.
Different rare spawns have different spawn timers, and I haven’t researched on spawn time. I rare spawn level when I got 10 spare minutes, but if you want to clear the different zones as often as possible, you will have to research that on your own.
I am going to show the ideal setup for rare spawn leveling. A lot of players won’t be able to meet these requirements, so you will have to come up with your own strategy to make this work for you.
First of all, you need 2 accounts. One with the character you wish to level, and another with a character who owns a flying mount who can carry passengers. Ideally you should be in control of both accounts, but you can have a friend control one of them if you wish, as long as you can communicate with each other.
Another neat bonus is if either of the two characters happens to be a dwarf. This way, you can spot treasure chests when flying around as well, which also grants a lot of XP opening (Remember to enable "Find Treasure"). If neither of the characters happens to be a dwarf, but you still wish to search for the chests, you can find an addon that shows you where chests have been found, and you can swing by and see if they happen to be there. Personally I use Gathermate for this purpose, and in my opinion, checking for nearby chests is well worth it, even if you only find a couple in each zone.
It’s important to remember one thing. If you kill a rare spawn while grouped with a level 85, you will get very little XP. You need to leave the party, and kill the mob on your own. So every time you find a rare spawn, you will have to jump off the mount, and leave the party. This gets really annoying to do very quickly, so I made a macro to do both at the same time:
/script VehicleExit();
/script LeaveParty();
If you control both accounts, changing back and forth from game to game to accept invites every time, also gets very annoying. To entirely cut out this part from the process, you can install an addon to help you. I’m using “Ceaphyrels AutoAcceptInvite” (Note that the addon isn’t up to date, so you can change the .toc file yourself to avoid the “load out of date addons” by changing the Interface number. (Currently to 40300)) To top it off, I would also recommend you to make an invite macro. Say your high level character is called Drakedog, simply make a macro like this “/invite Drakedog”. If you have the addon installed, it will automatically accept the invite, and you can jump right on the mount, without having to switch to the other game.
As a last tip, bring a lot of bag space for all the green and blue drops you will get doing this, which these days can earn you a lot of gold, due to transmogging.
There are different addons that possibly could make this strategy even easier, such as NPCscan, but to me it seems really buggy, and despite the fact that people say you don’t need to clear the cache if you make the files read-only, it still doesn’t work for me. However, if you can get t to work, and you can add all the rare spawns to it, it will save you some time, and some clicking as well. As for the location of the rare spawns, I suppose you could use an addon for them as well, but I think you need to add them all manually. If you plan on using this method on several characters, doing so might be a good idea.
If you’re going to do this manually, like I am, you will need a macro for each zone, which you’ll have to click to search for the rare spawns. You can make a few at a time, and just delete them when the current zone is starting to give too little XP.
I really spend a lot of time adding notes to every map, writing down the macros, and making sure they didn't exceed the 255 character limit, and then of course converting it to a guide here on Wowhead. This also means that you probably will come across some errors from time to time, and I apologize for that, but please feel free to post a comment with the correction. I also want to apologize for poor grammar, and typos. Most of this was done when I was tired, or had a few minutes to spare while waiting for something in Wow. And also, I'm from Denmark :)
Below you will find a list of zone maps with rare spawn locations, and the macros used for each zone. Have fun farming.
(The guide is meant for level 1-60, so higher level zones are not included. You might also notice some zones are missing, that's simply because there is only one or two rare spawns in the zones, and not worth mentioning in the guide. Another thing you might notice, is the fact that the names in the macros are not complete. The reason for this, is that a macro can only contain 255 letters, so I had to cut off parts at times. Don't worry, they still work. Also the pins on the maps aren't the precise location, but close enough that your macro should pick up the rare. A lot of the mobs patrols, and that is the reason for a lot more pins on some maps, than actually rare spawn locations.)

I'm working on making the guide more enjoyable to read. I've just added a picture, and some headlines to spice it all up a bit. I want create a better overview, than just a huge list of map links and macros, but this will take me a long time (which this guide already has), and is a very very boring process. Let me show you how I want to make it look like:
(1-10) Dun Morogh
/target Bjarn
/target Edan the Howler
/target Gibblewilt
/target Great Father Arctikus
/target Hammerspine
/target Timber
(1-10) Elwynn Forest
/target Fedfennel
/target Gruff Swiftbite
/target Gug Fatcandle
/target Morgaine the Sly
/target Mother Fang
/target Narg the Taskmaster
/target Thuros Lightfingers
(1-10) Tirisfal Galdes
/target Deeb
/target Farmer Solliden
/target Fellicent’s Shade
/target Lost Soul
/target Muad
/target Ressan the Needler
/target Sri’skulk
/target Tormented Spirit
(10-15) Westfall
/target Brack
/target Foe Reaper 4000
/target Leprithus
/target Master Digger
/target Sergeant Brashclaw
/target Slark
/target Vultros
To make this happen, I'm asking for your help!
To convert all my currently created maps into new ones, that works within the guide instead of a seperate link, I need the coordinates of the pins on them. Open a map, ex.
(25-30) Northern Stranglethorn
, and hover your mouse over each pin. You will see the X and Y coordinates of them. These must be added into a bit of code in order to work like I want them to. The code could look like this . This is just for one single pin, and needs to be done with all the pins on every map. Even when that's done, there is still work to do on each of the maps, in order for them to work properly, but I will handle that. It sounds like a lot of work, and very timeconsuming, and it is, for one person to do alone. That's is why I want your help. A single map only take a minute or two to do, but doing them all makes you nuts. I should know, I already plugged the pins in there in the first place, and wrote down all the macros. But if you want to help me out with some maps, or perhaps just 1, I would grately appriciate it, and your name will be creditted in this guide for doing so.
To give you an idea of how much work you need to do for one single map, I will show you the complete collection of pin coordinates for Westfall:
And just to give you an idea of what I need to do when I get these coded coordinates, I'll show you the entire code for the zone:
(10-15) Westfall
/target Brack
/target Foe Reaper 4000
/target Leprithus
/target Master Digger
/target Sergeant Brashclaw
/target Slark
/target Vultros
Check the "Complete maps" tab to see which zones that still aren't done, and post a comment with the pins written into the code, and the name of the zone ofcourse. I will then mark the zone as complete, and add your name to the "Special thanks" tab. When all the maps are done, I will update the guide with all the new maps.
Thank you in advance for helping out.
This is the list of currently completed maps for the improved guide update. As more and more maps gets completed, I will redo the list for easier overview, but for now, I'm just listing the few ones already completed.
Eastern Kingdoms is complete!
This tab is reserved to credit the people who wish to help out with the boring process of typing down all the coordinates of the pins, from each of the maps.

I've approved this because the info is great but I'd really encourage you to take a look at some other guides for inspiration for jazzing this up a bit. Nice visuals can really help readability.
I see you've made extensive visual and layout improvements. It looks fantastic! Good job!(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

I like the maps, but it would help a lot if the pins were linked so we knew which rare spawned at which pin, and if we wanted more information, we could just click the pin to navigate to the NPC's page.
This would change the code from
to
Name of NPC
Edit: cut off half of the comment >_<

I went through and did a basic spell check to help out with some of those typos you mentioned. It seems to be cleaned up now. I also really like the image you've used at the top of this guide. Not sure if you made it or not but it's still pretty cool.
Thank you for creating a guide for our Wowhead community and good luck with the endeavor to finish it! :)

NPC Scan is instrumental for Rare farming, but I've found it only works for BC, Wotlk, and Cata zones. I've never had it pick up mobs in "vanilla" zones from 1-60. Maybe a default setting that you could look into and add to the guide.
When it does work though, it flashes an icon on your screen with the NPC name and a picture. Clicking on the picture puts a nice green triangle over there head.
Might be nice to talk about the xp gains from rare spawn kills, sometimes worth a quest or two just in one kill!

Great guide. Superb. All rare spawns i've looked for are accounted for. A couple rares were stealthed which caught me off-guard for a min or two but, after playing since vanilla you kind of just assume. Loved the /tar macro's too. Excellent guide. Thanks again. -Énzo
p.s. Npc_Scan doesn't have vanilla rare spawns. The macro does just as good a job. In my opinion it does it better. Even with npc scan on I always spam macros when searching for rare spawns. Targets Npc_scan faster.
Just wanted to add that I found a new rare spawn @ Stratholme entrance Duke Rageweaver. On his skeleton Horse. Undead of course. Wasn't on map.

Looks like they added a couple new dogs. I'm wanting to find more if you guys see any other ones than these :
Snuffles @ Northfold Manor & Tracker , to the right of Mender's Stead.
Forgot to write down which zone. I think tracker was western plagues.

Great Guide, thank you.
Is there a more detailed guide?, as in it shows just the location of each rare on a map (no dots,etc)...
