Welcome to the Frost Mage M+ Guide for Battle for Azeroth. This guide's purpose is to help you excel at Frost Mage in Mythic+ by going over information such as Azerite, Talents, Gear, and Affix advice. This guide will help you learn most required information in order to play Frost Mage at a high level in Mythic+ dungeons.

Talents
There are currently 3 different talent builds that are viable for Frost Mage in M+ with the main differences being in the level 90 row. Knowing which one to use will depend on how big your group will pull, what your other DPS are playing, and what dungeon you are in.
彗星风暴
Build
This build takes advantage of
彗星风暴
's area of effect burst every 30 seconds. This build will shine in single target, large pulls, and lower keys.
碎冰
Build
This build's main focus is taking advantage of
碎冰
to cleave down packs of mobs. This set of talents will output the most damage by far for sustained 2 target cleave. This build will also perform better than the
彗星风暴
build on a medium sized pack (4-5 enemies) that lives for a considerable amount of time. If you have 3
冰霜速冻
traits, this build will also perform well on single target.
冰冻之雨
Build
This build's focus is only to do a lot of damage on big pulls. With the help of
冰冻之雨
, you are able to keep multiple
寒冰宝珠
s out at all times on big pulls. The downside of this build is that you will do very low damage in single target situations in comparison to the other two builds. You can also substitute
冰川尖刺
for
热能真空
if you want more consistent damage throughout the dungeon.
What Talents Should I Use?
Since there is no set way to do any single Dungeon, there is not a talent build that is best for any Dungeon. Your talents should be built around your group! Some questions that you should ask yourself before you start the dungeon:
"Are you pulling big frequently?"
"Do you pull mobs in with bosses?"
"Will what I play affect other DPS in my group?"
"Are you playing for speed or safety?"
"Do you need to kite any packs?"
Bosses
If your group decides that it is too dangerous to pull extra mobs in with bosses then I recommend playing the
彗星风暴
build. This is often the case on high or
残暴
keys where every amount of boss damage is super important. If your group suspects that bosses won't be much of an issue, then it may be better to run one of the other two builds to make other parts of the dungeon easier.
Small-Medium Packs
If your pull patterns are mainly small to medium sized packs I recommend starting with the
碎冰
build. The biggest problem with the
碎冰
build you should be aware of is that you can't easily control which mobs your cleaved
冰枪术
s and
冰川尖刺
s will hit. In many cases, the cleaved abilities ends up being irrelevant damage which doesn't make the pack die any quicker. An example of this is a pack of
剧毒细颚龙
's and a
飨宴的啸天龙
in Atal'dazar. If your group's goal is to kill this pack as quick as possible, it is most likely dependent on how fast the
飨宴的啸天龙
dies since passive AoE damage is usually enough to kill the
剧毒细颚龙
s. In this situation,
彗星风暴
would contribute much more to killing the pack faster than
碎冰
would. If there are several pulls like this that you plan on doing, then the
彗星风暴
build will most likely be better suited for your strategy. However, if you are able to get consistent valuable damage on your cleaved abilities throughout the dungeon, the
碎冰
build will pull ahead.
Bosses with Packs and Large Pulls
I only ever recommend using the
冰冻之雨
build in very specific scenarios since its damage for a single mob will be very low in comparison to the other builds. If your group is pulling extra mobs with bosses and you are consistently doing large pulls, the
冰冻之雨
build will perform exceptionally. In these scenarios, you will be able to maintain very high AoE damage while being able to dump many
冰枪术
s into a priority target. If you are not pulling things in with bosses, but are still pulling large then the
彗星风暴
build will most likely be better for the overall dungeon.
收割
The builds that will produce the best results for
收割
will be the
彗星风暴
and
冰冻之雨
builds depending on the dungeon. Although picking your talents around
收割
waves may boost your overall damage, it may not be the quickest or best thing for your group. You may find yourself lacking in the most important parts of the dungeon if you choose to go this route which could be the difference in timing the key. Unless your group is pulling waves of
收割
mobs into other packs or bosses, I suggest that you don't play around
收割
.
In the cases where you are pulling
收割
waves into extra mobs or bosses you should want to play around these pulls.
冰冻之雨
will often be the best choice for these types of pulls as you can get extra
寒冰宝珠
s from the
收割
mobs which will essentially allow you to funnel damage into the important enemies.
Pugging
If you are joining a Pug group and are just trying to finish the dungeon, I recommend to always start with the
彗星风暴
build. This is because
彗星风暴
is good in a majority of situations especially with a disorganized group.
Level 75 Talent Row
All 3 of these talents in this row can provide great utility towards your group. The most common pick in this row is
刺骨寒风
. This talent is an almost required pick if your tank ever needs to kite, especially with
寒冰宝珠
only providing a 35% base slow since 8.1. If your tank is confident that they will never need to kite, you should consider taking one of the other two talents.
寒冰结界
provides an extra
冰霜新星
which can be used in a variety of ways to stop a mob in place. Frost is also in a unique situation compared to Fire and Arcane when using
寒冰结界
. This is because
寒冰结界
can provide extra throughput by having an additional
冰霜新星
to
碎冰
your abilities.
My personal favorite pick is
冰霜之环
.
冰霜之环
is a unique form of crowd control since it lasts 10 seconds. This means you can pre-place it and it will remain effective until 10 targets have walked in or out of it. This opens up a lot of interesting things you can do in Dungeons that no other class can do. For example, maybe you want to do a big pull but there are several mobs that are spread out that will cast abilities. You can have your tank round up the mobs and run out of line of sight of the mobs forcing them to follow your tank. Then you can place
冰霜之环
, so that the mobs will run through it when heading towards your tank. The mobs will all end up being frozen in relatively the same spot, making the pull much easier to do! This is just one example of the utility
冰霜之环
can provide your group.
Gearing
Stat Weights
If you are looking for general stat weights for Frost in Mythic+, such a thing doesn't exist. You should sim yourself to find stat weights based on your gear, since they are ever changing. Keep in mind that Critical Strike will be weighted slightly lower than it actually is for fighting freezable mobs. This is because the default APL for Frost doesn't take advantage of
冰霜新星
and Pet
冰冻术
to
碎冰
your abilities.
Trinkets
In general, you should plan on using one passive trinket and one on use trinket. Frost can easily take advantage of fitting a lot of burst damage into the effect of an on use trinket, which will help inflate your burst damage. Currently, there are not too many stand out trinkets for Frost. Any trinkets with base Intellect at high item level will most likely be the best for you. However, you should always sim each combination to be sure. Here are a few trinkets that can work well if you get them at high item levels:
Passive Trinkets
黑暗低语海螺
- Critical Strike procs are valuable when
碎冰
ing abilities early on in an expansion while Critical Strike levels are low. If this lines up with a
彗星风暴
+
冰冻术
/
冰川尖刺
+
冰风暴
combo it can be very powerful.

- All of these trinkets have base Intellect and random damage procs that are powerful on single target. All will perform good overall due to having base Intellect and doing decent boss damage.

- This is the best possible trinket to get for many scenarios. It is basically an over budgeted stat stick trinket if you can cooperate with its requirement of staying away from other players without the trinket. This is usually very doable in Mythic+ since there aren't too many mechanics in dungeons that require stacking.
帕库冠羽
- This is a simple haste + speed proc trinket that has base intellect. This trinket is easy to get because it comes from the Battle of Dazar'alor raid.
On Use Trinkets
怨火柳枝
- Great on use effect that you can use twice while having it line up with the cooldown on
冰冷血脉
.

- Very strong effect because the effect doesn't decrease over its duration.

- Base Intellect on top of being an on use trinket is already strong. The effect is also very strong, especially with
冰冷血脉
as they have the same duration.

- Base intellect with a rather underwhelming on use effect. Does some burst damage that scales with how many targets it hits. Keep in mind that you can continue casting while channeling this trinket and still get its full value.

- Similar to

, but on a 1 minute cooldown. On single target, it will line up with every
寒冰宝珠
, making it a very consistent on use trinket.
Azerite Traits
As a Frost Mage, you can't get both
冰霜速冻
and
狡诈契约
on the same piece of Azerite gear currently. This means that you have to choose which trait you want to "stack". Due to how valuable single target damage is in Mythic+ it is often the best choice to play with 3
冰霜速冻
if that is available to you. That doesn't mean that
狡诈契约
doesn't have its place. If you are trying to evenly damage large packs of enemies then
狡诈契约
will quickly pull ahead of
冰霜速冻
.
Ring 1
Frequently Used
冰霜速冻
- Currently Frost's best single target trait in dungeons by far. Very powerful for
残暴
weeks and Dungeons with a lot of priority mobs. If you are using
碎冰
, this trait is almost required.
狡诈契约
- Passive intellect as long as you stay above 50% health. This trait is the best choice in high target packs as long as you can maintain the buff. Has the obvious downside of taking increased damage when below 20% health which can be a big deal in many scenarios.
Situationally Used
霜降
- Helpful for getting
寒冰宝珠
get back off cooldown. Loses a lot of value if you ever are holding
寒冰宝珠
for the next pull.

- These crit procs are extremely strong for Frost in all scenarios if they proc. These traits are only available at a high item level through receiving them through

- Very strong when paired with

for single target damage. Falls behind on multiple targets.

- Can be useful to do a lot of priority damage during big pulls. If you plan on pulling a lot of trash on to bosses, this trait will be very strong.

- Only strong if your group is playing around your
冰冷血脉
cooldown (only doing big pulls every 3 minutes). This trait falls behind quickly outside of cooldowns, making it a risky choice.
Ring 2
Frequently Used

- Great AoE and single target damage. One of the highest simming Ring 2 traits that is great in any situation.

- Similar to

, but for haste. Much stronger than all other secondary stat procs on Ring 2.
Situationally Used

- Won't do much overall damage, but will shine if a single mob is below 30% health for a long time.

Recommended

- Will provide the highest healing throughput for all traits in Ring 3 if managed optimally. Also helps with Mage's lack of consistent survivability.

- Provides good overall healing, but you can't control what it gets used on.

Before you start a dungeon, make sure you have the following items:

Strengths and Weaknesses
Frost brings a lot to your group in terms of utility and unique damage output. It is important to know where your specialization falls in the meta so that your group can capitalize on your strengths and work around your weaknesses.
Strengths
One of the biggest strengths Frost has in Mythic+ is its access to an abundancy of AoE slows through

. With careful positioning you are able to maintain a 100% up-time of your slows.
Frost has access to both burst and consistent AoE. If using
彗星风暴
, you have a very hard hitting AoE ability every 30 seconds. You also have consistent AoE for every pack thanks to
寒冰宝珠
.
Exponentially scales with more enemies. Frost already will do consistently high AoE, but when you add enough mobs you will be able to spam
寒冰宝珠
and
暴风雪
to do a ridiculous amount of damage.
You provide

, which are just better versions of

s within 30 seconds of each other allows you to trivialize many mechanics. In previous expansions, consistent damage used to be a big problem for Frost. Thanks to Tier 3 Azerite traits, frost is able to help your healer more with consistent damage.

Weaknesses

is relatively weak compared to other cooldowns such as

has a long 3 minute CD which makes it difficult to play around.
There isn't a combination of Azerite Traits that is best for Single Target and AoE so you have to choose which one you want to prioritize.
The ability to do strong single target damage is heavily reliant on having 3

traits.
Single target is heavily reliant on
冰冷智慧
and
寒冰指
procs.
No access to a long hard CC such as
扫堂腿
or
自然之力
which can be extremely helpful on some packs.

has a 24 second cooldown, making it less consistent than other interrupts such as

Best Races
If you are wanting to do Mythic+ at a high level, there are two different ways you could approach which race you choose. The first is strict theoretical output and the second is utility. In my opinion, if your main goal in the game is Mythic+ the latter is more important(especially if you are

).

The Best Races for a Single Target Encounter
The Best Races for a 4 Target Encounter
If you only care about doing the maximum theoretical damage in a Dungeon you should be a Lightforged Dranei for
圣光裁决者
if you are an

. If you are

, Troll and Pandaren are both very close so choose which one your prefer.
Utility
As far as races are concerned,
联盟
races can provide much more utility than
部落
races can. On the side of
联盟
there are two great Utility options:

- This ability not only provides an additional defensive, but also allows for you to dispel several different debuffs including

and

from Night Elf
- In my opinion, this is the ability that makes Night Elf the most overpowered race in the game as far as Mythic+ is concerned. If your entire group is a Night Elf, it allows for you to do unique skips that no other group composition can do. Not only that, but it allows for you to completely trivialize some boss mechanics such as Drain Fluids on Mchimba the Embalmer in King's Rest.
If mages didn't have
隐形术
, Night Elf would be the best race for mage hands down. Since we do, the difference between the utility a Dwarf and Night Elf brings is much smaller. Either are great options in terms of utility.
On the

side, there are less impactful racials for Mage in Mythic+, but there are some that should be noted:

- From what used to be an overpowered AoE silence is now an AoE magic dispell.

from Goblin
- This is essentially a short jump, similar to

Since mages already have a magic dispell through

, there are much fewer situations where

is better. Although you can never have too much movement,

is essentially a worse

. In my opinion, Blood Elf will bring you the most utility in Mythic+ on the

side.
Class Utility
What utility your class brings is very important in Mythic+ and often is the deciding factor on what the best class is for a certain dungeon. Frost Mage brings a ton of utility to your group:

- Arguably the best utility Mage brings as it doubles down as a magic dispel and buffing yourself. In a lot of dungeons there are buffs you can

to provide a significant damage increase.

- This is strictly better than effects such as

and is only shared with Shamans and Hunters.

- This is strictly better than

and will be at least a 3% increase in damage for most casters in your group.

- This is helpful in some dungeons and is only shared by Druids and Shamans.

- This spell is not only a very powerful mobility option, but also allows for you to dodge some mechanics that fixate on your position.

- This ability is a great survival tool, but also is an option for your healer to catch up on another member in your party if needed.
变形术
- One of the only spammable hard crowd controls in the game. Very helpful for

.

- An AoE root that can prevent certain mobs from moving towards other mobs or even from fleeing when low!
冰霜之环
- When talented into this ability, you can pre-place it to act as an AoE incapacitate. You can also use it to group mobs kited through it or even prevent damage from mobs that leap to a ranged target.
Slows
- Unique to Frost Mages, you are able to maintain 100% up-time on slows if managed optimally.
Mastering Frost Mage in Mythic+
There are multiple factors that go in to to excelling at Frost Mage in Mythic+. You need to be able to correctly utilize your utility to the fullest, do exceptional damage, and be a good player. The true secret to being a master at any given class is that you never are the "best", but are always looking for ways to improve your game play. When I say to improve your game play I don't mean smash your head against dungeons to get a better Raider.io score. Raider.io score tells nothing about a player except how much time they spend in Dungeons. If you truly want to improve as a player you should analyze your play, talk to other players, but most importantly never think you have reached the pinnacle of your performance (you haven't). With that being said, here are some things you should be thinking about:
Making a Route
- The very first thing you should do with your group before you enter a dungeon. If your group is winging it, no one in your group will be able to fully optimize their cooldowns and the run will be much slower than it could be. A great addon that I recommend using for this is
Method Dungeon Tools
written by Nnogga.
Slows
- The main priority you have in any pack that might need to be kited is that the mobs retain slows 100% of the time. This got more tricky since 8.1 when the slow duration of
暴风雪
and
寒冰宝珠
got reduced. Because of that, it actually is impossible to have slows on everything if they are spread. If they are spread you should focus on keeping the mobs closest to the tank slowed so that the ones behind may funnel in. There are some tricks to make sure that you maintain slows on the important mobs being kited. You should
寒冰宝珠
and
暴风雪
at the front of a pack in the direction your tank is kiting. This will keep the mobs be in your abilities for the longest time possible. If your abilities are on cooldown and the slows are about to drop, use
冰霜新星
and
冰锥术
to slow them down.
Pulling
- Pulling mobs isn't restricted to the tank! If there are multiple packs you want to pull together, but your tank doesn't quite have the tools to do so, maybe you can. Frost Mages have tools such as
闪光术
,
冰霜新星
, and
寒冰屏障
to control enemies. If you are able to pull mobs without getting hit and then sit in
寒冰屏障
they will all funnel to you making it very easy for your tank to pick up.
Managing Cooldowns
- To do optimal damage throughout a dungeon, you may need to hold certain abilities/items for the future. This means holding
彗星风暴
and
寒冰宝珠
at the end of a pack so that it is up for the next. This also means that using
暴风雪
on a single enemy might be worth it so that
寒冰宝珠
is back up for the next pull you do. You should get used to managing your cooldowns and even crafting pulls around your cooldowns and
时间扭曲
times.
Interrupts
- you should NOT
法术反制
on cooldown. Since you are a mage, you have a 24 second cooldown on your interrupt while other classes have interrupts with as low as 15 second cooldowns. Classes with the shortest cooldown on their interrupt should have priority so that your group can get as many interrupts as possible. Instead of randomly interrupting, someone in your group should be calling who is interrupting what mob so that overlaps don’t happen.
Be a Team Player
- This is often the hardest concept for most players to work on. You need to realize that Mythic+ is a team effort and your actions may affect others in your group. What is better for you, may not be better for someone else in your group. You should be constantly thinking about how you can makes your teammate's lives easier. For example, a common strategy in Mythic+ is to pull around a Subtlety rogue meaning you bring a bunch of small mobs onto a bigger one, allowing them to funnel damage into it. If you go nuts on AoE in this situation with
彗星风暴
and
寒冰宝珠
, it will make the speed of the key slower. Sometimes holding your buttons will benefit other players in your group more than if you had used them.
Macros
Here are some Macros that I find useful:
Places your
暴风雪
at your cursor. At high haste levels it's easy to lose time between casts having to click, this macro limits that.
/cast Blizzard
Uses
寒冰屏障
the first time you press the button. Cancels the debuff the next time you use it.
/stopcasting
/cancelaura Ice Block
/cast Ice Block
Stops your casting so that you don't have to move to interrupt your cast and use

/stopcasting
/cast Counterspell
Interrupts your focused target. Useful when you don't want to switch off your current one.

Uses <spell> at whatever your mouse is over, useful for using

on the fly or for sniping

Weakauras
Party Cooldowns on Party Frame
- This weakaura shows many of your party's important cooldowns on your party frames.
Interrupt Tracker
- This shows the cooldown of all party member's interrupt cooldown. Required for the person "shot calling" interrupts.
M+ !keys
- Whenever someone types !keys in party chat, this will link your key in party chat as long as you have this weakaura. Very easy way to see what keys your group currently has available.
Addons
OPie
- Lets you bind multiple things to a single button. Especially useful for world and target markers.
Method Dungeon Tools
- Lets you visually map out your dungeon beforehand. Very helpful to get your group on the same page of what you are doing.
Littlewigs

DeadlyBossMods
- Lets you see timers of many trash and boss abilities. Required for the highest level of M+ pushing.

These tips cover important mechanics and most mobs you should look out for in each Dungeon. The best talents and traits for you will depend on how your group pulls the Dungeon.

How does the F.R.I.E.D work? When I try to use one before an intellect potion, the potion cd is shared with the bomb. The reverse is true as well. I've seen people commenting that they can be used together, but it's not working for me. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
