How to Play Fire Mage in Shadowlands
If you have ever wondered why the saying is "fight fire with fire" instead of "fight everything with fire", then perhaps Fire Mage is the specialization for you. From the fire we stand in during raids, to the
, fire has always been one of the most deadly schools of magic in World of Warcraft. Fire Mage has always been known for its offensive focus, high damage, and cleave in the form of
. If you are looking for a specialization that lets you turn your enemies into bonfires with legs, spreading their flame to other nearby enemies, then look no further.
Fire Mage is one of a handful of ranged caster specializations in World of Warcraft that focuses on cleave rather than spread damage over time. It is a very high burst playstyle, as most of your damage comes during your
. Outside of cooldowns, the playstyle revolves around its stable flow of generating
from critical strikes while
burns your target for additional fire damage. Once you have stoked the flames for long enough,
can be used to spread your fire to nearby foes.
In theory, all Mages use
as a resource, but this is just a front since Mana is mostly irrelevant. Your
resource as a Fire mage is your
ability, Hot Streak is fuel for the abilities that cause the most damage and Phoenix Flames is used to spread that damage to nearby enemies. However, Fire magic isn't a Fire Mage's only tool. Iconic Mage utility spells like
allow Mages of all specializations to control and outplay their enemies while their friends burn.

The changes to Fire Mage in 9.1 do not have any impact on the optimal Talents choices for endgame content. Fire still has a
standard Single Target raid and Mythic+ build
is returning to Battle for Azeroth levels at a one second reduction per crit. The effect of CDR (cool down reduction) for Fire Mage depends a lot on what the cooldown of
ends up being. For example, going from a 60 second cooldown to a 50 second cooldown does very little for Fire since you want to sync your
with your one minute cooldowns. Going from a 40 second cooldown to a 55 second cooldown also does very little for this same reason, but anything that causes
’s cooldown to average over one minute is going to have a huge effect.
This change brings
from 55-60 seconds to approximately 73 seconds.
The overall effect of this increase to cooldown in a patchwork environment is around -8% in single target. This is before factoring in boss mechanics, such as the windows between
. Fire mage is extremely cooldown reliant and
having a 73 second cooldown is extremely awkward
. If the intent here is to nerf Fire Mage in raiding, it will have that result but mostly in the frustration it will cause in having
almost fit cooldown timings but miss it by 10 seconds. In my opinion, this is a case of unintended consequences since
is a talent choice that almost all Fire Mages take. I believe Blizzard is looking at this as a way to help balance the talent row while also helping curb Fire’s strength in Mythic+. The end result of this change will be that Fire Mages will continue to run
’s cooldown will end up around 13 seconds longer.

Fire Mage Strengths and Weaknesses
Fire Mages are at their best in AoE or single target. If targets are stacked,
can make quick work of them. They also have cleave damage while not losing anything in single target due to
spread. They are the most mobile of all three Mage specs, due to having the most instant casts and
. They also have excellent execute damage with
and a second life with
, making them very desirable for some raid encounters. Mages in general are very mobile and hard to kill.

Phoenix's flame was a bad choice for the fire mage due to long recharge and low dmg considering it being the main dmg ability for Fire mage ! the fact that they would nerf it even further and losing 1 fire blast charge to take phoenix flame , means the class is further nerfed... so thanks to blizzard for keep nerfing the one iconic spec for blood elven mages !
I've mained Fire for the entirety of Legion.
The spec feels kind of bland right now with a lesser version of combustion.
Talent choices have become more situational and it should be very interesting as raid and m+ will give different playstyles.
Plus that mages will be very valuable in m+ with spellsteal. There's a lot of buffs to steal and build your combustions around.
BFA starts out with a simpled down rotation, but most certainly add a lot of good stuff along the expansion.
I have no doubt that the complexity will return.
Thanks for posting this guide, it was very helpful
