Elemental Shaman PvP Overview
With the introduction to a few key new talents such as
, as well as a damage re-balance of certain key abilities, Elemental Shaman is looking incredibly promising for Shadowlands. Super high burst via
, as well as retaining all of our utility gained during BfA has put as at the top of the caster meta list coming into the expansion.
Elemental Shaman Strengths in PvP
Lightning Lasso Stun & Damage
Now works with
. This spell is a great CC and can be used in a lot of setups to land kills. Positioning and covering this ability is important in order to get full effectiveness. However, Lasso is a versatile and very powerful tool when used correctly.
were returned to us in BfA, which gave us a huge amount of team utility to work with. What’s more is our Grounding Totem is the newly designed Legion version instead of the older iterations, where the Grounding needs to be killed itself. This means Elemental is in a stronger position than ever at stopping double casted crowd control (for example, when fighting a Warlock & Mage composition).
Extreme Kiting Ability
was changed to allow the Shaman to never fall below 100% movement speed whilst it's active. What this means is that when in Ghost Wolf, the Shaman is essentially under a
effect. When pairing this with your slow effects like
, this means you can kite many melee classes in Arena, only having real difficulty with classes like Demon Hunter, Subtlety Rogue, or Windwalker Monk.
Multiple Schools of Magic
Elemental has access to three (potentially four!) schools of magic in Arena. The fourth school is Elemental, which comes from Elemental Blast, but it is not currently viable. However, the Frost, Fire, and Nature schools are all readily available to Elemental through their various spells. This means completely interrupting an Elemental Shaman is close to impossible, as you'd need to land interrupts on all three schools in a very short amount of time.
Elemental Shaman Weaknesses in PvP
Very Susceptible to Stuns
Elemental is, along with Enhancement, one of the tankiest specs in the game when it comes to avoiding damage while not stunned due to the aforementioned
kiting ability and the
talent. The main Elemental defensive,
, is not usable in stuns – meaning you will have to pre-cast
before a stun to get any use out of your only defensive, since you cannot kite or avoid damage whilst stunned. This is why Elemental has great difficulty when dealing with Subtlety Rogues in Arena and Orc is the single best race for Elemental Shaman because of the racial
. However, Elemental has a secondary layer of defense with
which can cover this weakness. Also, Healing Stream totem was reintroduced in Shadowlands to help us sustain throughout a match a little bit better.
Squishy Against Unkiteable Damage
Similarly; high, unkiteable, sustained damage is difficult to deal with for Elemental due to your lack of defensives. For example, Feral Druids are problematic as they are unkitable and deal a lot of damage through bleed effects.

Fantastic guide! I've played Elemental Shaman for almost 10 years, yet this guide had a lot to teach me about arenas, an element of PvP I haven't delved into much.
Thanks a bunch!
I don't understand the escapability in PvP.
I turn into Ghost Wolf, but I'm still slowed, rooted, etc. by mages, warriors, and damn near any class with some type of slow down ability.
I feel like I'm missing something.
You recommend taking Relentless if you are an Orc but the skill says it does not stack with similar effects. Is the orc racial an exception?
removed at 8.1
May want to double check this:
"Recommended PvP Talents
PvP Trinket - Situational
The talent choice regarding trinkets on the first row can vary. As an Orc, you'll want to pick Relentless and combine it with Hardiness to massively reduce stun duration on you. Otherwise, always pick Gladiator's Medallion.
Relentless: Duration of incoming crowd control effects reduced by 20%. Does not stack with similar effects."
