Welcome to Wowhead's Discipline Priest guide for Arena PvP (Player vs Player), up to date for 9.2.7! This guide outlines the role of Discipline Priests in PvP, their strengths and weaknesses, strong compositions for Discipline Priests, and effective PvP strategies. Hello everyone and welcome to my in-depth guide to Discipline Priest in WoW arena. My name is Krawnz and I've been playing World of Warcraft since MoP. I've been playing Discipline Priest in tournaments since 2015 and won some of them, I've also managed to qualify for EU Regionals 2017 couldn't make it in 2016 because our main team member couldn't show up.
Discipline is a very versatile spec with many possible playstyles so I recommend that you don't indiscriminately copy information in this guide, as I'm personally convinced you shouldn't with any guide. Playstyles, talent picks, and the meta constantly evolve so what's important is that you understand the depth of your class and specialization, which helps you to choose and adapt your own playstyle.
If you're here with the intention and motivation to learn I also recommend to check out other guides as everybody plays differently and there's something to learn from how everyone plays. This guide is about how I think Discipline Priest should be played.
Discipline Priest PvP Overview
Numerous people believe Discipline Priest has been one of finest healers throughout the history of WoW. Its strengths such as damage, dispels, crowd control, etc. can provide game-winning opportunities, making it one of the most aggressive healers in its current state. Every healer has its weaknesses, however. Discipline Priest lacks a significant amount of mobility, and its deficiency in mana can cause complications.
Discipline Priest Strengths in PvP
Crowd Control
Discipline Priest provides a good amount of crowd control with

which can supply the team with just enough control to score a kill or extend the game.
Damage
Discipline possesses a large amount of consistent damage output which assists with maintaining pressure, scoring kills, and out-healing spread pressure. Our main goal should be have the most Atonement healing done so it means we will have to use the less mana possible to heal our team and also we will be helping out our team to make more pressure against enemies.
Discipline's largest damaging factor is

which can and should be spread upon as many targets as possible in arena, including enemy pets and minions. It will also spread up if we Penance the enemy and there is another enemy close to them. Keeping at least one
净化邪恶
active should be of high priority - not only does it proc
阴暗面之力
, it also acts as a powerful HoT through

. Note that while spreading DoTs is extremely effective and mana efficient for healing and damage - as of BfA, multiple instances of
净化邪恶
no longer increase
阴暗面之力
's proc rate.
Other Discipline Priest damaging abilities include

; and probably in Shadowlands,

since it will increase the damage of

so Venthyr looks like it's going to be the covenant we need to select. The prioritization of these spells is inherently situational and dependent on whether your team has pressure or you're being pressured, what type of damage you're dealing with, and just how mana efficient you're meant to be in your current match-up. Keep in mind that while healing through damage is extremely mana-efficient, it's often not enough to out-heal serious amounts of burst damage.
is your highest priority damaging ability; it does the most amount of instant damage in your kit as well as restoring mana. Often, if you find yourself in a situation where you don't have enough globals to cast
on cooldown, it's worth speccing into
摧心魔
instead. This is especially true in Shadowlands where Subtlety Rogue looks really good and we could use Mindbender over Solace to be in combat when we get Kidney Shotted or Blinded and we used it before, so we can't get Sapped. Keep in mind that
has travel time and can't be used to kill

before it goes off if you're not close enough.

is Discipline's filler spell - it takes low priority but is extremely cheap and efficient. However,
惩击
prioritizes over casting

offensively while stationary, unless

is active or you can use it to spread

. Due to Discipline's lack of mobility, dealing damage with
苦修
while stationary is often wasted as you'll have less active globals whilst you're forced to be on the move, and you obviously want to be active as much as possible - even while lining enemy crowd control. We have to keep in mind that in Shadowlands, we get

back. Aside from one other spell to do damage in Shadow school, it will absorb the incoming damage from the enemies, which is what Smite used to do in BfA.

both deal serious amounts of damage and can be used both offensively and defensively; offensively to help your team land a kill, and defensively to help you out with out-healing high amounts of consistent pressure during enemy cooldowns such as

are especially effective at outhealing high amounts of sustain damage, though keep in mind that while you might want to save
暗影魔
for an enemy offensive cooldown,

should be casted relatively on cooldown as it restores mana.

is an interesting ability. Speccing into this is high risk, high reward as it allows you to deal massive amounts of damage in a small window, however it affects your defensive capabilities as recovering without

becomes increasingly difficult as the game goes on and takes a heavy toll on your mana. Correctly bursting with

is very important, and there's a couple of things you should keep in mind while specced into this ability.
The highest amount of damage you can deal in an ideal situation where you have time to set up with

active. Whether or not you're dealing with interrupts will change how you want to prioritize your spells, however. If you only have a small window to be hardcasting spells before interrupts become available again, you'll want to cast

, following up with an instant-cast
before finally casting

, so that if you get interrupted it has minimal impact on your damage output. If your

is at risk of being interrupted, make sure to summon your

so you don't miss out on having it active during your burst rotation as they're both on the Shadow school. Casting

in order to apply or reapply your DoT during a burst window is not worth it in terms of burst damage, and should only be casted if your opponent is at extremely low health, in which case it'll take priority over a
惩击
simply due to it being an instant cast.
In the current fast-paced meta and with the high amount of damage we have to deal with, it's almost impossible to play

in any scenario and we should base our damage rotation on

The best we can do to heal through Atonement is using

Dispel
Discipline is one of the two healers with an offensive dispel (

), allowing you to dispel key offensive buffs such as

, as well as key defensive buffs such as

Discipline is also the only healer to have the option to talent into two dispels on friendly targets instead of one with the talent
, giving the option to dispel teammates out of more crowd control. This is extremely effective against enemy team compositions that possess multiple criteria of spammable crowd control such as Mage/Warlock, SP/Mage and Boomkin/Mage.

is a very effective dispel that works on abilities such as
寒冰屏障
,
圣盾术
, and

. However, it costs a massive amount of mana and has a 45 second cooldown, so it should only be casted where it's absolutely necessary. Keep in mind that while
群体驱散
prioritizes dispelling immunities, if an enemy has both
寒冰屏障
and
保护祝福
active, there's a chance that your
群体驱散
will dispel the
保护祝福
instead of the
寒冰屏障
as they both count as immunities, even though
保护祝福
is dispellable by
驱散魔法
while
寒冰屏障
is not. Being aware of this helps with deciding whether you should be casting
群体驱散
or not as again, it costs a large amount of mana.
Discipline Priest Weaknesses in PvP
Mobility
Discipline struggles with mobility more than any other healer. Not having much to escape from enemies with makes it an easy target to get trained down by melee cleaves, or potentially casters if caught in a bad position.

helps with our mobility, however it's rather ineffective while slowed. In Shadowlands we will probably keep using

a lot, which will provide us the same sprint for 3 seconds when we use Shield on any friendly target, allowing us to have an extra buff and make harder for enemies purge us. The most important aspect to focus on while trying to remedy this weakness on mobility is positioning and global management, as you can cover a decent amount of distance without losing uptime on healing or damage with instant cast spells such as
and
净化邪恶
, as well as
苦修
, which is castable while moving.
Mana
With
being one of the most important Discipline PvP spells to outheal burst damage, they can easily run out of mana. Aggressively dispelling with
驱散魔法
and
群体驱散
can also contribute to running out of mana quickly. There are several things that can be done to battle Discipline's mana issues though, such as waiting for your teammate to drop under 35% health to proc

before casting your
stacks. I recommend this talent when we face cleaves that we know they are going to run on us, spam kicks etc., and we are not going to be able to use our Penance with Castigation to be more mana efficient. It will depend on the composition we are playing though; if we play RMP (Rogue/Mage/Priest) or a composition that help us to be free and peel us from melees running on us, we could even use Schism as we said before, and support our team with a lot of extra situational damage. Several talent choices and our spell management can definitely help out with mana efficiency too.
This keep being our biggest problem in this expansion, with
真言术:耀
taking a big paper in PvP scenarios since we will have to deal with big tons of damage and bursts since the game is really fast-paced and considering this we will have to manage really good our use of
真言术:耀
and rotate our deffensive CDs with our teammates to try save the most mana possible.
Discipline Priest Changes in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.7
Talents and Racials in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.7
Mana gained from Fae Guardian's (Night Fae Ability) Wrathful Faerie reduced by 50% in PvP combat. This is a nerf that will affect to our mana regeneration in combat. As we saw in the previous patch, Night Fae was one of the best options for Discipline Priest, but we have to remember that in 9.2.7we will be able to wear double legendary so even it's a nerf, in my opinion we will still be very powerful (which we will explore on the Gear and Covenants pages respectively).
Improved Mass Dispel (PvP Talent) now reduces Mass Dispel's cooldown to 25 seconds (was 15 seconds).
Damage dealt by Mindgames (Venthyr Ability) reduced by 15% in PvP combat. This will be just for Holy Priests in the beginning, so we will still take the advantage when we face Holy Priests in terms of damage if we stay Venthyr Discipline Priests.
Rotations and Strategy in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.7
There will be no changes to these in Patch 9.2.7.
Gear and Legendaries in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.7
We are getting tier set bonuses which we will discuss in detail in the gear section of this guide. These are our bonuses:

They look quite interesting and when combined with our 2 legendaries it may make Discipline Priest really powerful for 9.2.7, but we will see how this advances since a lot of players are asking to disable tier sets in PvP.
Covenants in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.7
The good thing for this patch is that we will be able to play more covenants than just
温西尔
since we have seen that there will be more viable options due to buffs for covenant abilities and different soulbinds making them very powerful, depending on the compostions we play.
An important change that we have from 9.1.5 is that we will be able to change covenants and catch up way easier, meaning we can play around with covenants and their legendaries much more easily. We can buy renown 40 with
掮灵的卓越印记
which will be able for us on any character if we have renown 80 achieved on any of our characters.

There’s been a couple of notable changes to Discipline Priests in Patch 9.1.
New PvP Talents:
圣光之耀
will be probably a really good option and we will take a look into it since it increases 15 % our damage in smite and penance and also our
苦修
decreases by 40% enemy movement speed and increases friendly movement speed by 40% depends on where we use it.
心灵光影
will be another interesting option to take a look at since we will have
心灵之光
that will reduce our healing spells mana by 15% and that had always been our weakness and also
心灵之影
will increase our spell damage and healing through
救赎
by 10%. We will have a 6 sec CD to change between them and so important is a buff that can't be dispelled.
"Nerfs"
极致光辉
(PvP Talent) is now increasing the healing just by 150% (it was 250%).
三位一体
(PvP Talent) no longer increases
救赎
damage to healing transfer by 20%. It just will increase our
救赎
's duration by 15 seconds and it will increase the critical chance of Smite, Penance and Shadowfiend has been increased to 30% (it was 25%) when we apply
救赎
to 3 or more targets.
For 9.1.5:

damage increased by 40%
幡然悔悟
healing increased by 15%
暗影盟约
healing increased by 10%, mana cost reduced by 10%, and duration lowered to 7 seconds (it was 9 seconds) our shadow spells will deal 25% more damage and healing but we won't be able to cast any holy spell during the 7 seconds so thats why this won't be viable in PvP.
