While I may not have solved all 32 archaeological rares (I have 20 thus far), after hundreds of hours dedicated to the cause I can say this -
there is a method to the madness!
And I say madness because archaeology is one profession that should not be taken lightly. Get ready to dig... Lots.
When you arrive at a dig site, take a look around you. The surrounding mobs will generally be the best indication of what kind of archaeological finds you may uncover while surveying there. If you're surrounded by ogres, or something less obvious, then consider what the local settlements are predominantly comprised of, or who the local lore is related to.
In the Hinterlands or STV you'll be surrounded by throngs of trolls - and whadya know, the Troll Archaeology Finds go hand in hand. Wetlands, Badlands and Burning Steppes are all known for their dwarven dwellings - and similarly, so are most the archaeological finds. If animals dominate the land, then appropriately you will often find fossils.
Archaeologically speaking, the Night Elves
thoroughly
dominate Kalimdor, Dwarves and Trolls the Eastern Kingdoms, and Fossils neatly scattered across both. Outlands are only for the Orcs and Draenei archaeological finds. While Northrend is proving most interesting with Night Elvish and Troll Fragments popping up in addition to the expected Nerubian and Vrykul Fragments. For anything Tol'Vir, it's all in Uldum and Uldum alone (will update if this changes). Unfortunately, dig site spawn locations in Uldum share the same continent as Kalimdor - maximum total of four. This means you're gonna have to keep digging Fossil & Night Elf Frags (among others) all over Kalimdor in order to possibly have the Uldum dig sites spawn. Stay tuned!
There are always exceptions to every rule, but you'll find by and large that the above theory holds true. For those of you seeking dig site locations only, see below.

For a complete tally of ALL the archaeology solves you have slaved through, use the following macro (updated for MoP):
/run print("Total artifacts"); for x=1,12 do local c=GetNumArtifactsByRace(x); local a =0; for y=1,c do local t = select(9, GetArtifactInfoByRace(x, y)); a=a+t;end local rn = GetArchaeologyRaceInfo(x); if( c > 1 ) then print(rn .. ": " .. a); end end
This will produce a list like this:
Total artifacts
Dwarf: 44
Draenei: 11
Fossil: 64
Night Elf: 179
Nerubian: 4

There is a glitched night elf fragment in Dire Maul in the southwest corner of the Broken Commons digsite as of 12/17/10. I put a ticket in about this and Blizz's cure for it (until they get it fixed) is to change continents and the entire digsites drop locations will reset. This worked for me the first time and im currently on my way to Booty Bay and back to try and reset this again. Ill confirm this in a minute when i get back.
Edit: Didn't work. may have just reset to the exact same location....gonna try again

There won't be any Night Elf "history" left at the rate that i'm pulling these things up. Pretty soon i'll be able to build my own bloody Teldrassil out of fragments...
There's a glitched zone in Dire Maul, South-East corner near a tree root.

What I'm really curious to know, is what the ceilings are for certain pieces. I am doubling up on previous commons, though there are three commons I do not have yet
umbra crescent: 45,2
silver scroll case: 45,2
carcanet of the hundred magi: 45,2.
I have one NElf rare (Druid and Priest Statue Set) but it doesn't seem to be the 'lowest rare' as my husband's first rare was Kaldorei Wind Chimes.
Any thoughts? I'm running around trying to work on other races to raise Arche and STOP getting doubles, but I'm 333/375 and still getting them when I venture to waste fragments.

Anyone else find it aggeravating when you get a red scope fly 100 yards and get Another red scope
in a totally different direction! (AAHH!)
One tip though after I find a fragment I survey in that same spot and sometimes get
lucky and a new fragment appers right there.

With High enough archeology you can find and complete quests inside each of the new dungeons. These quests cost a keystone and grant your party a zone wide buff.
Dwarf Rune Stone:
Blackrock Caverns
The Stonecore
Grim Batol
Highborne Scroll:
Throne of the Tides
Tol'Vir Hieroglyphic:
Lost City
Vortex Pinacle
Halls of Origination

Anyone know if the Vashj'ir dig sites were removed? I've been digging EK for over a week (going for sword and staff) and I'm surprised I haven't gotten any spawns in Vashj'ir. Just curious.
