For Belastrasza's race you'll see these abilities in your vehicle interface:
红玉疲惫
赤红展翼
甘霖

Even on Retail we are starting with full Vigor which is not exactly great here. When you immediately dump it with 红玉疲惫, the start feels kinda slow. But when you try to use 赤红展翼 first, you won't see a speed-boost because Vigor is already maxed.

For my best attempts I was starting with 赤红展翼 anyways, mostly relying on the first gale wind for a good start, then smashing 甘霖 + 红玉疲惫 to reset cooldowns and dump Vigor, and afterwards smashing 赤红展翼 to immediately speed-up when all my Vigor has been consumed (in best case you can sync this with the sections where you need to reach higher located rings).
And then... I literally continue this Button 3+1 and Button 2 smashing for the rest of the race.

Extremely awkward quest with flight mechanics unlike anything else we've had. With that said, it's still very doable once you figure it out.

Start your flight off the ledge, don't use any ability for the first 2-3 seconds (this is to make the following cooldowns fit the up/down pattern of the flight). Then simply repeat as the abilities come off cooldown:

So if there's a world quest up on a certain section of the wall you can't complete the race because the swarm of mantid get you in combat..... Ingenious design by blizzard.

If you want to abandon this do it when there as it will teleport back if you do it elsewhere. On the other hand it's a free hearthstone to Valdrakken.

The mantid were making it impossible to do and I wanted the stopwatch out of my bags.

It's easy once you understand how to combine the abilities, but the descriptions are terrible. Crimson Flight increases your speed, but only when you're out of vigor. So use Ruby Exhaustion, once all vigor is gone pop Crimson Flight, then Renewal. Repeat until victory.

Immediately Hit 1, once 5 vigor are depleted hit 2 wait for it to cycle through the short bursts then hit 3. once you hit the 3, immediately hit 1 again. You need the vigor to deplete again in order to hit 2 and get your bursts. I was able to get gold with 55 seconds

Gave up on this quest. The stupid dragon CANT even pass the portal that is above. It falls down even when using key 2 for a boost.
This dragon should be put to death for its unability to fly properly.

Another untested over engineered time sink that will aggravate the hell out of you, as the mechanics are different than normal dragon races, why? Who the hell knows.. I gave up and luckily my game time will run out in 11 days or so,and i can finally put this crap behind me..

This damn whelp's 2nd ability will prevent you from doing almost any turning AND she has a really wide turning angle, so if you get too far left or right it's best to just restart (button 4) since the vigor spender, the actual flapping upwards, and the reset ability give you next to no meaningful control.

Attempted this a few times and then just stopped. The descriptions on the abilities are confusing and bloated. I simply don't care enough to bother with stuff like this anymore.

TL:DR:

(1) Use first skill when going downward.

(2) Use second skill when need to go upward.

(3) Use third skill asap when both on cd.

(4) Rinse and repeat.

Explainations:

The idea of this flight basically is to use the first skill (red one) when going downward, just to empty the vigor, so you got empty vigor to be restored later by second skill.

Then when you need to speed up to go upward, you use second skill, aka the one with boots, without empty vigor, this skill does no speed up, so it's crucial to use the first skill when you can, aka when going downward and need no speed up help.

When both skill on cd, use 3rd skill to refresh them asap so you could use first skill again on the next downward trajectory. Rinse and repeat.

Horrible Blizzard! But the 1-2-3 strategy posted by works fantastically!

Wait until you pass the first building, them spam1-2-3, as directed. Keep hitting the ability buttons even if it seems like you're going fast enough, because you won't be.

Timing: If you're like me (a bad flyer) and can't look away to see the CDs on the ability buttons or you will miss the circles, try this: Cast 1, count to 6, cast 2, count to 2, cast 3, cast 1, and repeat.

This quest is by far the worst one I have ever tried. This quest needs to be reworked so that the achievement and the pet Axel can be completed.

This one is easy if you just pretend that everything works in the opposite way. The description and design of the abilities leads to big misunderstandings.

First, ignore the vigor bar and pretend that you are starting the race with no vigor, then pretend these are your abilities and just do what seems right:

1 - Recharge your vigor to full over 5 seconds
2 - Use all your vigor to surge forward over 6 seconds
3 - Reset the first two long cooldowns

With that mindset it is much easier to understand. First you recharge your vigor with #1, wait until you need it and use it up with #2, then immediately reset your cooldowns with #3 and start recharging your vigor with #1 again.

Try to glide as far as possible and use #2 before you stall, then just get it ready to use again. Easy.

If you avoid obstacles you only have to do this cycle twice.

So, Blizzard....................................why, OH WHY do you have to have different mechanics for each color of dragon? Adult dragons ALL FLY THE SAME. SAME MECHANICS. Instead you decide to I dunno, smoke meth with the guy at the bus station before work, then come to work and design THIS.

I can usually make it past the second tower and then everything falls apart.

I have quite literally jumped through every other hoop in this goddamned questline in order to earn this little red battle pet who supposedly 'can't fly properly'. Is this part of some sadistic in joke with your much maligned developers? The last race I need for this, and it's the red dragon, who can't fly her own damned course.

I think if there is an afterlife, and a sentient force behind the universe, that it would be fitting for you to be forced to have the entirety of WoW run like the mechanics of this race, and that you should be forced to eternally level a character like that. With no level cap in sight.

FU Blizzard. Finally got me to join the rabble in that particular Greek Chorus. Congratulations. I hope you stub your pinky toe on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

If you are not prepared for the local super-rare shouting YOUR RAGE SUSTAINS ME! then I highly recommend turning off in game dialog...

If your situation does not permit you to be caught cussing aloud do this one another day, as no matter how good you are at steering, it'll take you at least 6 or 7 tries... more like 20...

Conditions under which to just hit 5 and return to the Pandaria Beginning Point

You managed to hit 2 while you haven't lost all the red poofs from 1. ==> no speed boost, you lose.
You scrape the ground. Once you're parked, you've lost momentum and afaict there's no way to regain it and get an uplift.
if you miss a ring you'll probably time out before you get another swing around but you'll definitely lose your sense of pacing.

It is a bit of a roller coaster. Starts "flat" but high in the air, has to dive into the sidewalk/inner-tower then pop back up again.

Best results are if you can hit 2 and steer well enough to zoom down and still have momentum for up - intooooo a tower upppp and out again, et cetera.

Others have noted in various ways Start with 1 immediately, use 2 when it's out of cooldown
which results in them both on cooldown, pop 3 as soon as you have a moment and hit 1 again when going-floaty won't harm your speed run
~~while not ripping your hair out because you're too busy trying to make~~ that insane curve toward the right.
in ideal circumstances 2 will be ready just about the time you desperately need it to make the next ring, and you'll be in the popped-up-in-midair phase of the roller coaster.

There is something slightly horrible about trying to do it when you don't already know the course. If you're the sort who can do that sort of thing, you might be able to do it with a very tight camera. edit to add: And I am deeply, terribly sorry that they added "whelp there it is" into the super meta for Taivan. Maybe they'll take it out? We can pray.

Everyone else beware, the archways in the towers are sized for mere mortals not dragons, and on the critical path.

the secret of tlying is not only to "fall but miss the ground". it is to do it repetitively by sneaking zooms upward and then doing it again a few times.

A. move STRAIGHT FORWARD let the white cloud throw you through ring 1.
B. hit button 1 burst that red stuff.
C. point noise slightly up DO NOT MISS RING 2 but point downward through it.
D. hit speeeeed (button two) to zoom under the tower / through the walkway / scrape the top of a midair ring / another tower walkway
E. don't touch any floor nor walls ever, please hit the ring past tower two NOSE UPWARD
F. Fringe check the ring by the mountain / turn RIGHT immediately / hit 3 & 1.
G. float hopefully toward next ring.
H. having mastered this doorway thingy is good you'll need it
I. 3 & 1 as you approach rings turning right past a building, or you can't slow in time
J. and you need zoomies across the open sky or you can't make it to the temple building
K. krush this one sequence and you can punch the ring over the olympic torch sized bowl ?

if you bust ANYTHING - miss the first ring, scrape floor, end up Low rather than High, hit 5 and begin anew.

I agree with everyone else who says that the basic strategy is to just do 1 - 2 - 3 until you get to the end. I will try to give my impression on what is happening here.

The whole thing is (perhaps deliberately) unintuitive, in that you only speed up when you don't have vigor.

红玉疲惫 drains your vigor. You need to do this for 赤红展翼 to work.
赤红展翼 adds 1 vigor each second, with a speed boost for each vigor. If your vigor is full, then it does nothing.
甘霖 resets the cooldown of 红玉疲惫 and 甘霖, so that you can sustain the cycle.

Of course, there's a big problem here: If you land and run out of vigor, then there's realistically no way to recover, so just reset the challenge.

It is very weird, but I suppose it's at least a bit interesting. I'm going to assume this is the developers playing around with the flight models and seeing what does and does not work.

This is a pile of flying questy dogs***....................................
I must have tried this 30 times and the BEST I have come away with is 64 - not even close to Gold.

I understand the whole 1-2-3 thing but even on my best attempt it basically does nothing.
I'll take my Silver and walk down Washout Lane...

When you're falling, press 3 + 1, when you need to go up, press 2.
You might not get gold but you'll finish lol.

idk how to feel, I didn't find the mechanics for this race hard to understand at all and got gold my first attempt then I come here and see so many acting like its the hardest most confusing thing they ever done.

Think of it this way. Your 2 button generates speed and altitude but you need to press 1 to get it to do something more than literally nothing.

1 consumes your vigor, think of your vigor bar depleting as a countdown to when to press 2. Like "3 (vigor). 2. 1. Go" And you need to raise your altitude frequently enough that you use 3 to reset the CD because 1 & 2 are too long innately. When you're flying straight, hit 1, but milk the upward mobility that's barely there if you need to reach a hoop. And then 2 when you need *full* turbo to get to one.

Once I figured this out I got gold with 53 seconds. The complainy comments are justified though, whoever designed this is not meant for game design. They shouldn't be left responsible for much in any field. I wouldn't trust their math as a cashier or on them getting an office printer "to do the print". Give them a job at a high school cafeteria, absolutely zero disrespect to people who work in one, you do the lord's work. But pay this person $3 an hour to go retrieve bread from the fridge or the bag of boneless rib patties/hot dogs from the freezer whenever they're called upon by name. Don't give them too much credit to think they can handle tongs, a knife or the seal under lids of new ketchup/BBQ sauce. Don't let them do anything else. I know they aren't capable of that.

Please note there is a pretty crippling bug with this race/quest. After completing the race once, you will be given the Riding Abroad buff/debuff and this will remain on your character until you mount your dragon again. If you immediately re-enter the race then Belastrasza will suffer from Riding Abroad and it will be VERY difficult to get the Gold time.

I found that I wasn't able to get below 61 seconds (Gold is 60 seconds) but once I noticed this and went into the race again after mounting up, I instantly got a 53 second time. I told another racer who I saw racing at the same time struggling and they instantly got 55 seconds when they also couldn't break 61-62. So if you're finding it impossible to Gold this race, mount up before you go back in. I KNEW that I wasn't getting the same speed/distance on my flight as the videos I was watching and couldn't understand why until I looked deeper into it.

I hope this helps some others get Gold on this annoying little race :)

Being this was the last one I needed for the pet, I kept at it. There's some decent stats in these post but I found watching Cymre's video was more insightful for when to hit what ability. What a total PITA quest.
