Had alot of issues with Soar in Beta, kept falling straight down after casting. Thank goodness you can reset and try again. Wonder how much this will affect coming gameplay.

I was so stoked on my new drak until this quest. Soar launches me too high to hit the rings, I can't X to lower my flight like usual, and the speed up spell only has two uses and doesn't lower me low enough to hit the rings. This is incredibly aggravating. I've played WoW for years and am completely lost in the @#$%ing starting zone. What is going on with this user interface? How do I lower my soar? WTF

Is this possible without a mouse? I play on a laptop and I do not have room to use a mouse and have been having such a hard time with this quest. How do I raise and lower myself to get the damn rings? IDK what to do. I've been trying this stupid quest for over 30 mins now.

Hold right click on your mouse and move back & forth to change your direction up or down.

This quest is enough to make you dislike the expansion already with that said if you land back at the starting point without hitting the start over button you can keep your progress

Before I found that I had gotten a new spell. :-o
And... after that... if I at least could keep the rings a managed. 3 so far. :-( I'm off for now :-(((

I might eventually figure it out but honestly, having to practice 3D movements in a 2D environment just sucks. I always hated the quests where you have to fly through rings or stuff like that. Now buttons don't work and you have to right-click, left-click, press and hold..... not a fun way to start a new expansion

How frustrating! I was ready to give up until I came here and saw the mouse-hold trick. I was trying to use my flight/swimming controls and ready to punt my computer. THANK YOU to stoneycreek12 and Kanuton! Keeping your progress if you don't hit Try Again and the hint about mouse-look movement saved me! I finally got four rings and landed back at the start, and was lucky enough that I could glide to the last one. I am not sure I am going to be enjoying the new flight mechanic at all. :(

5 minutes between flights? This is ridiculous. I have to fly to the next quest, can't make it there in one Soar, 15 minutes to get to the next place? Absolutely absurd. If anyone knows how to stay in flight after the two extra flight helpers are gone, I'd love to know how.

Looks like Mac users are not seeing the 2 action buttons 'Soar' and the other one. I asked 2 friends on PC and they both said we should be getting 2 buttons to replace the action bars that would then start the quest that would prompt us to fly thru hoops.

Don't worry folks, we may be 'bad' at flying, we're not JUST THAT BAD this time. It's a bug or something this time around.

I clicked every single option under EDIT MODE and these 2 buttons don't show up under EXTRA ABILITIES.

it is not a laptop issue, I am on an iMac with mouse and all.

It would be only slightly less infuriating, if these things didn't reset your count

hitting Try Again. it teleports you back to the beginning. Feels like groundhog day.
Not getting all 5 in a single pass before soar's timer runs out.
landing, because you have trouble mastering this "dive to get some speed" tactic they're on about.

Tempted to find a game controller (since it obviously acts like an airplane) but I've been hearing that has bugs too.

Edit to Add:
If you succeed at getting it to not reset the rings count, you still need to come up with a way to nail each Ring individually. That is to say, you're not able to keep popping the same ring to collect the credit.

All I can say is BS , there is no way a starting zone quest should be that frustrating. It’s like they don’t want me to come back. 🤪🤣😂

For those using a Mac Trackpad, I was just as frustrated as you. Walk your dragon back up the hill away from the quest. It took me two attempts once I had gotten a distance aways. It gives you more time to maneuver. I hope this helps, because I was stuck for 30 minutes and almost gave up. Just give yourself more space.

I think the Blizz team are really laughing at all of us , This is so frustrating I've done nothing but kill myself everytime I've tried to attempt this ..I still haven't figure it out. :(
Has anyone made it through , if so what's the trick? :(

When I look at the 4 videos it looks like they have some pitch control, I have no problems yawing, just no pitch control. What am I missing.

For those playing on a laptop go to Option > Movements Keys > scroll down to Pitch Up and Pitch down to set your key bindings.

Like many of the commenters here, I was greatly frustrated by the lack of movement options for this quest and the related Dracthyr ability Soar. I took a short break, and when I came back, I tried both suggestions found here by other commenters: Press and hold the Soar button while you steer with your mouse by holding the right click button. It was such a relief to finally finish this portion of the quest! As for those on laptops, I would recommend a mouse, at least temporarily. Good luck, all!

LAPTOP USERS
I did this with is a trackpad, and here's how.

A. make sure I know where "right click" is on my pad.
B. plan to use the trackpad and no other behavior to move the character. reaction time isn't good enough otherwise.

The quest is phased in three parts.

PART ONE
was annoying but compared to part2 I don't even remember it.
I was able to solve it with mild steering "downward" (needs pitch down) - starting my Soar from far away on the approaching stairs so I'd have the time to plan seeing the rings, then punching the provided ("vehicle bar" replaces main powers bar, so, 1 2 ...) rush forward button when lined up for their tube.

PART TWO
only doable by a swoop that resembles sliding down a playground slide. You have to SOAR upward, use the RIGHT CLICK WITH ONE FINGER and THE OTHER FINGER TO SWEEP OVER then DIVE FAIRLY SOON AND PULL UP all steering with the not-so-clicking finger. Still needed a few moments practice. I think I used rush forward for one of them. I got them out of order.

OH AND THE FIRST TWO RINGS are flat not facing you. So it feels more like a sink pipe.

All other movement methods corrupted how the camera view follows and therefore I had no hope of spotting and catching all rings before any of these things happen:
1. You scrape the walls, going out of bounds.
2. You land anywhere but a few magically approved places (that aren't marked), therefore inconceivably going out of bounds anyway.
3. You Soar too far past the end of the rings.
These teleport you back to square one and strip your ring count to zero.

While in theory the Soar is active for a decent bit of time, the oomph dies off and you are essentially a glider who follows Azeroth physics, not Earth's. Turning right or left on keybind will not give you "wingover" lift nor tilt you down. Strafing won't. Thus, keyboard control cannot (at time of this writing) do the job. Once you are too low to reach rings, you stand only a mild hope of reaching one more. Edit to Add: If it's one of the right rings and you "spot landed" you can manage to peg it with Glide and it still counts.

I got my success by tagging the first two (dive "down the scoop"), hoping I hit number three, going for number five, then coming back for number four, so I'd still have the reach.

PART THREE
I had hoped it was over, it wasn't. Although this time they provided a lot of rings to mess with and you only need three to make it happy. It uses text alert-shouts to tell you to practice a couple extra effects it can use. Again these have taken over the first few numbers in your action bar.

Fact is, if they'd made it a vehicle bar I think a lot more people would have complained about the impossible reaction times.

DO NOT play it throughwhile lagged or at risk of disconnects.
NOR SHALT THOU play it while angry at your computer for any other reason.

You can do this. It's not personal. You've only been turned into a malygos-magicked statue for twenty thousand years, assuming Nozdormu's watch isn't busted.

For the diving portion, I walked around to a higher point and jumped from there. I was able to go through all five rings easily.

You may need to temporarily disable your action bar addon. In order for you to see 向前突进 and 冲天升腾 (after 翱翔 is cast), Blizzard automatically replaces their MainActionBar with their MultiBar7. I tend to think of that replacement as being a 'slight of hand' or a 'new feature'. My addon happens to be Dominos, but I assume other action bar addons respond in a similar fashion to that 'slight of hand'. I made Dominos mimic Blizzard's 'slight of hand' by manually adding 向前突进 and 冲天升腾 to Dominos' Action Bar 8 (AKA Blizzard's MultiBar7), after which I no longer needed to disable Dominos. Addons other than Dominos may need different remedial steps.

I've created my Evoker and I was so excited to start playing it but the Dive has me beaten, I have tried so many times (and died several times in the process). I managed to go through the hoops at Bastian for a similar quest and I managed the soar one on the second time.

I have level 60 characters with the Horde and Alliance and played three different specs so I am not a total newbie it worries me that this is going to be the gameplay through this expansion. I've given up for now and will try again another day.

OK guys, here is how to do this. Soar up and get the first high one. Got another one or two if you can. Land on the hill at the far end of the run. Don't use the return button and the rings you got will still show. Wait until "Soar " cools down (you may have to fight a mob or two) and then soar again and get the rest. Use the right mouse only and scroll your mouse until you are in the first-person mode (can't see your character).

Soar has a cast time... took me way to long to figure that out. So stand still and cast Soar WHILE STANDING STILL.

Without the help of some of the comments here this quest would have made me rage-quit this xpac on my 1st day. Grade F- to blizz on this one.

When's the next expansion? This one is crap! I can't fly thru those stupid rings, the best I do is one and I'm out, bloody hell why can't we skip this part, or give me a refund and I will stick with Shadowlands.

For anyone else struggling like I did, I'd like to explain what I discovered (which btw, is NOT clear anywhere in the quest or in the tool tips of a new Dracthyr): in the Spellbook of the Dracthyr there is an ability titled "Dragonriding", which is a flyout and shows six other abilities (some of which are Passive). Two of the abilities are titled "Surge Forward" and "Skyward Ascent", which you can drag out of the flyout and place on your action bars. These are NOT the ones that will work with this quest. Look for the actual Racial abilities (also titled "Surge Forward" and "Skyward Ascent") which are listed on the same page in your Spellbook (NOT in the Dragonriding flyout). The Racial abilities are the only ones that work for this quest. If you'll notice, the icons even match the announcement text that flashes on your screen once you begin to Soar toward the rings (and are different icons than the "Surge Forward" and "Skyward Ascent" abilities inside the Dragonriding flyout.)

This might seem completely obvious to some, but I struggled with this for almost an hour, wondering why the "Surge Forward" and "Skyward Ascent" abilities that I placed on my action bars were constantly grayed out while doing the quest, even after I began to Soar. It's also frustrating and confusing that the boarders of the Racial abilities don't glow if you don't have them placed on your action bars like other spells do. That would have helped if they had glowed inside the Spellbook to notify me that I didn't have them on any action bar, even when I had place what I thought was the correct abilities (because of their titles.)

Maybe this will help anyone else who had the same brain fart that I did. :p

I might be the only dumb**s to have had this problem, but I didn't realize at first that you have to click and speak to Dervishian first to actually OBTAIN the soar ability. So, y'know, if you're dumb like me, here ya go.

In your spellbook are the spells Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent! Pull them down to your Action bar and use them when they "light up". :)

Blizzard is making game play extremely hard, I am wondering if they deliberately don't want so many players. Well this quest is so stupid I gave up and deleted my Evoker, back to my Hunter.

The NPC dialogue for this quest:

Scalecommander Azurathel says: It is good to see you, Emberthal. But... where is your weyrn?

鳞长安波莎 says: I awakened. The rest of my dracthyr... did not.

Scalecommander Cindrethresh says: May their names be ever remembered.

Scalecommander Emberthal says: May their names be ever remembered.

The player heads to speak with Dervishian, who has the following instructions:

Let us begin your flight training with coasting.

When you begin to Soar, simply move forward as if you were gliding. The difference is that you pick up speed as you travel in the same direction.

Try coasting through these rings I conjured. It may take a few tries to get used to.

As soon as the player has flown through all of the Coasting Ring, they will find themselves standing in front of 科得希, who explains how to dive:

Okay! Diving is next!

As you Soar, tip your nose down. You will pick up speed as you dive.

Turn your nose up before hitting the ground and you will slowly decelerate as you burn off all of that energy you built up from your fall. But you will be flying much faster than when you started.

See if you can hit all of these rings. Take as many tries as you need.

Once the player manages to go through all the Dive Rings, they will be teleported in front of Dervishian, who gives the final task of making a Skyward Ascent:

When you are airborne you might have noticed that you can occasionally surge forward or ascend skyward.

These are limited boosts that can give you that extra burst of speed or gain more airtime. Use them sparingly as you will only be able to use them so many times for each Soar.

Try them at your leisure.

Incredibly frustrating quest. Helps to get a perspective on the rings... move sideways, off down the bridge to get another look at how the rings are oriented in the sky. Then give it a go. and a second. and a third... very frustrating.
