First quest in and I already have to use WoWhead... they could have made the guy a bit more obvious!

Lol, the minimap directed me to the room besides it, before I could enter the entryway collapsed. Spend 15 minutes searching for another way in.
It's the room to the right.

how do you get out of the first room

If you are stuck in the first room like I was, delete the quest and the room will reset.

I was looking for this guy, but decided to explore... and jumped down into the pit area where you heal up the Drakthyr npcs... and I can't get back up to complete the quest... is there any way to get back up?

The NPC dialogue that goes along with this quest (as an Alliance Dracthyr):

德薇希安 says: Wha... what... <name>! What has happened? Who did this to us?

Dervishian glides down into the room below and then runs for a nearby hall.

Dervishian says: Something is very wrong here. We must find our wing mates. This way!

Dervishian leaves the player behind, with the expectation that they will follow. In a nearby room, the player finds Talon Kethahn, who was crushed to death long ago. Clicking on him reveals the following message:

On the way to the hall, the player finds a dracthyr named Tethalash and frees him from his bonds.

Tethalash says: I remember... obeying an order.

Tethalash runs off in the same direction as Dervishian. The player follows, and when they get close to the hall a blue dragon named Lapisagos can be heard shouting, "The dracthyr are breaking free! Contain them!"

Dervishian says: In here, evoker.

The player joins Dervishian, a dracthyr named Kodethi, and Tethalash. In front of them stands Scalecommander Azurathel, stuck in stasis until the player frees him.

Kodethi says: How long were we held in stasis?

Dervishian says: A very long time, by the look of our creche.

Scalecommander Azurathel says: Ungh... my head... Alright, we need to get our bearings.

[<Only flashes of memory remain as you shake off what feels like an endless sleep. The dracthyr before you is unresponsive, frozen in place by some unknown magic. You sense that within you lies the power to break your ally free. There may be others within the creche who are suspended in this stasis. It is your duty to awaken them.>]
