The upcoming Patch 4.1: Rise of the Zandalari just got
a lot
more exciting.
A new patch hit the PTR early this morning and with it comes some news that most of us World of Warcraft players have been waiting to hear for years. Yes, you will be able to dye your armor in 4.1. In addition to a couple pieces of new 5-man gear, we've datamined several brand new items called
Concentrated Dyes
as well as an uncategorized spell called
. Additionally, after hopping on the PTR to check it out, we can confirm that this is a more potent dye that lets players tint their armor to preferred shades.
Blizzard's Tribute to Felicia Day's "The Guild"
Interestingly enough, the dyes are sold by a vendor named
. A redheaded Blood Elf, Delicia can be found in Booty Bay in a previously abandoned hut that's surrounded by textiles and articles of clothing. In the surrounding area, there are two other new NPCs called
Maze Tester
and
. It seems that Blizzard's added these two to help reaffirm the initial tribute--Delicia Fay being a somewhat obvious play on celebrity
Felicia Day's
name--as both are characters on her widely popular web series about MMORPG addicts,
The Guild
. Their guild tags also reference the two rival guilds in the show, Clara's being "Knights of Good" and Tink's being "Axis of Anarchy."
In other words, move over

--Delicia's just replaced you as Blizzard's best parody NPC yet!
Armor Dyes
Now for what we currently know about the armor dyes. Each of the new dyes are available for 500g from the vendor. Right now they are of limited supply; each color is only purchasable once and on a long respawn timer. It is likely that it is an hourly or even daily timer. Additionally, the dyes are single use items only. This is probably intended and backs up what we've found so far.
From this would seem that Blizzard wants dyes to be rare and serve as status symbols for their most dedicated players. Unfortunately, the dyes are not currently bind on pick-up, meaning that it's likely that prices will be severely inflated for weeks and even months as dyes make their way to the auction house. While this is an auctioneer's dream, it's an average player's nightmare--especially for those on PvP servers where players are bound to be camping the vendor at all hours of the day. Hopefully Blizzard reconsiders this before it reaches live or adds alternate methods to obtain armor dye. Special colors from bosses or a way for alchemists to crush their own herbs into dyes would be an excellent addition.

(Note:
Currently turns your character naked
, we don't know if this is intended or if there will be spell effects added later)
We also had a chance to try some of the dye out and it looks good.
See below for an example of
used on a dress (
) and
used on a breastplate (
). Since the dyes have a slow respawn, we were only able to get one color each so you can't see the full effect of how awesome all pink armor would look--but you get the idea of how cool this is going to be when it's live.
We'll keep you updated on the latest as this change unfolds. Hopefully you're as excited as we are to hear dyes are finally put in the game. This has been a long time coming.
