Important Changes to Leveling a Warrior in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The Shadowlands Covenant system is not being released in pre-patch, so will not be covered here. Players will not have the opportunity to choose a Covenant until their first character reaches level 60 in Shadowlands.
There is a new tab on your spellbook between General and your talent specialization, simply titled "Warrior". These are abilities that are now shared by all Warriors regardless of any specialization they choose.
New Warriors will not begin in a default spec (Arms). Until they are allowed to choose a spec at level 10, their abilities are drawn from the general Warrior abilities available to all specializations.
Experienced Warriors will notice some talents have been reworked or rearranged, and may require re-acquiring some talents.
AoE (Area of Effect) caps are being introduced in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which places a limit on how many targets the ability can hit at once. This affects a couple of warrior abilities.
Best Warrior Leveling Spec in Shadowlands
For a total beginner to the class, although each specialization has strengths and weaknesses, we recommend Arms as the best leveling spec. Arms has a good combination between single-target and AoE group damage, and more self-healing options through the level 35 talent
复苏之风
. Both passive and active Arms ability also apply Bleed damage, a helpful DOT (Damage Over Time) ability that is very helpful getting down tough bosses. Rage is easier to manage at earlier levels than it is for Fury. With the reintroduction of defensive abilities to all Warriors such as
法术反射
,
盾牌格挡
, and
挑战怒吼
, Arms Warriors with a "sword and board" set can sometimes even act as tanks or offtanks in normal dungeons without changing specs.
Many players enjoy leveling as Fury, which is a beast of DPS (damage per second) output, and can be a great deal of fun for rounding up groups of enemies. The level 30 talent
巨龙怒吼
remains uncapped in regard to number of enemies it can affect. Without
复苏之风
, Fury warriors have limited out-of-combat healing, but they do have the in-combat ability
嗜血
, which attacks the target and restores 3% health.
Warriors who enjoy leveling primarily in dungeons prefer Protection. While the introduction of defensive elements to all Warrior specs means that a properly geared Arms warrior can tank under unchallenging circumstances, Protection remains the best choice for regular dungeon tanking. With a much larger array of defensive and aggro-generating abilities and talents, the Protection warrior is a go-to choice for the dungeon aficionado.
Choosing a Warrior Specialization
Before level 10, you are just a Warrior with some general Warrior abilities. When you reach level 10, you get to pick one of the three specializations: Arms, Fury, or Protection.
At level 10, you will select a specialization. You can swap between specializations by opening up the Specialization & Talents tab (or pressing N to open it quickly), choosing the specialization you like, and clicking the Activate button. There is no cost to swapping!
Arms
: Use
压制
to increase the damage on your
致死打击
. Use
斩杀
to finish off (20% of the rage cost is refunded for Arms warriors if the mob survives the
斩杀
). At 19, you can add
巨人打击
into the rotation after Mortal Strike if you need some extra oomph to get to the
斩杀
.
Fury
: Use
怒击
at two charges, and
嗜血
for damage and extra healing through the fight.
暴怒
is a great ability, particularly for a long boss fight, but at 80 Rage it's an expensive ability. If you are AoE pulling, this should generate enough rage for you to begin
旋风斩
; later you can add the level 30 talent
巨龙怒吼
and the level 45
剑刃风暴
to your AoE arsenal.
Protection
: Open with
盾牌猛击
, then
雷霆一击
,
复仇
, and
毁灭打击
. Later, you can also open with the level 32 talent
天神下凡
. Maintain
盾牌格挡
whenever you are tanking enemies. Use
无视苦痛
(40 Rage) if you have Rage to spare, but be sure not to sacrifice
盾牌格挡
(30 Rage) to get it, since this is your most important line of defense.
One Warrior ability now open to all classes you should only use if you have no rage gaining/maintaining problems is
猛击
. It's got a fairly high rage cost (20 Rage) and not much more than damage to offer. At low levels, you don't generate enough Rage to waste, and at higher levels there are much more effective Rage spenders.
Choosing a Race for Your Warrior in Shadowlands
Choosing your race can be an arduous task, as it defines our character's appearance and is an expensive trait to change. Unlike in the past, Racial Traits don't give players many throughput benefits, most race perks are limited to utility or profession bonuses.
Warriors are spoiled for choice, since they are the only class that can choose any race they want!
Default Races
are races that are immediately available to be played when you start your WoW account.
Allied Races
are races that are locked behind certain requirements that need to be met before you can create characters belonging to that race.
Each race has different racial abilities and spells, but no races offer an immediate advantage when compared to others, so you can create your Warrior to be whatever race suits your aesthetic best! Warriors can choose from the following races (click on the race names to learn more about them!):

愤怒掌控
; otherwise, pick
肆意放纵
. It's a playstyle choice.

盾牌格挡
effect for its duration.
Best Warrior Leveling Rotation in Shadowlands
While Arms and Fury are both focused on damage dealing, they accomplish this in very different ways and use different tools to accomplish this goal. While Protection warriors can solo world content, they excel as dungeon tanks, where they will need to be able to handle a wide variety of situations. While they can damage targets, their focus is more on damage mitigation than on damage output.
Optimal Ability Use While Leveling - All Specializations
Charge!
You will want to engage enemies with
冲锋
whenever possible, to generate Rage. This is an effective tactic for all three specializations.
Optimal Arms Warrior Ability Use While Leveling
Elite Mobs:
Use
压制
to increase
致死打击
damage. You can use
剑在人在
or
集结呐喊
as cooldowns to stay alive. If all goes wrong, you can effectively kite many enemies with
断筋
and
英勇飞跃
to give time for
复苏之风
d to heal yourself back up.
Lots of small mobs:
Warriors receive
旋风斩
at level 9, but it's a little difficult to use early on due to its high rage requirements (30 Rage). At level 22, you will have access to
横扫攻击
, which makes single target damaging ability hit 1 additional target within 8 yards for 75% damage. At level 38, you will get
剑刃风暴
, at level 40 you can choose the talent
顺劈斩
. Groups can also be great time to pay attention to your
乘胜追击
procs to keep yourself healed, even if you lack the rage to do much AoE early on.
Dungeons:
You can use your
断筋
slows to kite mobs going for a healer or some weaker DPS. Use
拳击
to interrupt dangerous spellcasts, or the returned level 47 Warrior ability
法术反射
to send it back at the caster! The return of shouts to all specs such as
战斗怒吼
at level 39 and
集结呐喊
at level 46 can contribute important buffs as well. Take care not to pull aggro off the tank. Take care not to pull aggro off the tank.
Optimal Fury Warrior Ability Use While Leveling
Elite Mobs:
Fury has very high self sustain thanks to
嗜血
and
狂怒回复
, which will help it survive in extended combat.
鲁莽
can burst many hard targets down quickly.
Lots of small mobs:
Warriors receive
旋风斩
at level 9, but it's a little difficult to use early on due to its high rage requirements (30 Rage). Later it becomes easier with more Rage tools at your disposal. The level 30 talent
巨龙怒吼
and the level 45
剑刃风暴
add more options.
Dungeons:
You can use your
断筋
slows to kite mobs going for a healer or some weaker DPS. Use

法术反射
to send it back at the caster! The return of shouts to all specs such as
战斗怒吼
at level 39 and
集结呐喊
at level 46 can contribute important buffs as well. Take care not to pull aggro off the tank.
Optimal Protection Warrior Ability Use While Leveling
Elite Mobs:
Just follow your normal rotation to deal with elites; your increased resistance should warrant a kill. Keep your active mitigation up --
盾牌格挡
or
无视苦痛
--to reduce damage taken. You do have access to many defensive cooldowns if things get ugly, like
破釜沉舟
and
盾墙
.
Lots of small mobs:
复仇
and
雷霆一击
are great tools for dealing with groups, and when improved by the level 45 talent
无坚不摧之力
, the radius of
雷霆一击
increases by 30%. While both spells can hit unlimited numbers of targets in their range, they both deal reduced damage beyond 5 targets.
Dungeons:
Try to always keep all mobs on you at all times with abilities like
嘲讽
and at level 54, the returned ability . Always watch the healer's mana. Use
拳击
to interrupt dangerous spellcasts, or the returned level 47 Warrior ability
法术反射
to send it back at the caster! The return of shouts to all specs such as
战斗怒吼
at level 39 and
集结呐喊
at level 46 can contribute important buffs as well.
Warrior Dungeon Leveling in Shadowlands
Currently, speed leveling through dungeon boosting is working on the Shadowlands pre-patch PTR. Dungeon boosting is having a max-level character pulling a low-level character through dungeons. This allows people to level a character from 10-50 in about 3 hours.
This may be nerfed prior to release, so do not count on this technique being available unless it is still in place when the pre-patch goes live.
In case this isn't available, or you don't have a max level character to do this for you, here are some general tips about dungeon leveling for warriors.
Protection is the obvious spec to go with for dungeon leveling. Dungeon queues are perpetually short of tanks, so you'll find yourself getting a group nearly instantly, instead of having to wait 15 minutes (or longer) for a group as a DPS class.
Arms and Fury warriors can also be useful in a popular type of dungeon group that surfaced in WoW Classic: the dungeon cleave group. This is a fast-paced strategy, and often groups will spend hours at a time in a particular dungeon. Both specs have strong AoE multiple-target damage abilities, including
旋风斩
,
剑刃风暴
, for both, the level 40 talent
顺劈斩
for Arms and the level 45 talent
巨龙怒吼
for Fury. Use the same dungeon techniques described above to slow runners, interrupt or reflect spells, and use Shouts to buff the group.
Just remember that you will need to rely on your healer for most of your healing, as
乘胜追击
does not proc unless you get the killing blow. Arms warriors can step back to let their
复苏之风
catch them up a little, but this may not work depending on how fast the group is moving through the dungeon.
Best Weapons and Gear for Leveling a Warrior in Shadowlands
Warriors are a plate wearing class and have the distinction of being one of the only classes that can equip almost any type of weapon, except Warglaives and Wands. They can also equip Shields and Offhands (though most Offhands do not provide enough protection or stats to be worth it). This is their preferred list of weapons types, depending on their spec:
Arms is optimized one heavy-hitting two-handed weapon, such as a two-handed Polearm, Sword, Axe, or Mace. A Staff is also possible, but these are usually specced for Intellect and Agility, not Strength. Arms warriors cannot dual wield.
Fury warriors dual-wield either one-handed or two-handed weapons starting at level 14 with the passive Fury abilities
鲁莽怒火
and
泰坦之握
. While you can dual wield one of each type, there is no benefit to doing so; the speed and damage increases of
鲁莽怒火
only work if you have two 1h-weapons equipped simultaneously.
Protection warriors' abilities and strengths rely on the use of a one-handed weapon with a Shield, colloquially known as "sword and board". Many important Protection warrior abilities do not work without a Shield equipped.
Warrior Heirlooms in Shadowlands
Heirloom gear is a special gear category that scales with your current level, can be created on the fly with the Heirloom menu, and offers set bonuses when multiple heirloom pieces are worn. The heirloom set bonuses are listed below:
(2) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by 30%.
(3) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons and battlegrounds.
(4) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% primary stat for 2 minutes. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 additional minutes.
(6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by an additional 30%.
Heirlooms have made a major change with Shadowlands -- the experience bonuses are gone. Instead, there will be set bonuses for wearing up to 6 different types of Heirloom armor pieces. The new set bonus can be obtained from all Heirloom pieces except weapons, shields, and trinkets, so body armor pieces, necklaces, and rings count.
For more information on the state of heirlooms in Shadowlands, check our heirloom changes guide.
Heirloom Changes in Shadowlands
What you will choose depends in large part on what you have available to you. All the heirloom plate armor pieces offer Haste, Crit Strike, or both Haste and Crit at half rate (if one helm offers +10 Haste, the same-level helm offering both gives +5 Haste and +5 Crit). Arms warriors should focus on those pieces that give Crit Strike, Protection should go for Haste pieces, and Fury warriors can split between Haste and Crit.
Here is a list of recommended heirlooms for Warrior players to play with:
Helms:
抛光后的勇气之盔
,
抛光的力量头盔
,
朴素的光铸头盔
Necklace:
永恒烬怒护符
Shoulder:
擦亮的勇气肩甲
,
抛光的力量肩铠
,
朴素的光铸肩铠
Cloak:
穿旧的岩肤石像鬼斗篷
Chest:
抛光后的勇气胸甲
抛光的力量胸甲
,
朴素的光铸胸甲
Legs:
抛光后的勇气腿甲
,
抛光的力量腿铠
,
朴素的光铸腿铠
Rings:
杉德尔船长的回归指环
,
海狼之戒
Trinkets:
迅捷的正义之手
,
虚空之触
2H Weapons:
染血的奥金斧
,
1H Weapon:
磨旧的痛击之刃
,
虔诚的光环石锤
Shield:
带灼痕的龙人之盾
Although Heirlooms themselves are not as valuable as they once were, the Heirloom mount,
代驾型摩托
, is still very valuable, as it is one of the only mounts you can use from level 1. You can obtain this mount by completing the achievement
传家宝收藏家
.
I would recommend that if you are leveling a warrior without heirlooms 1-50, don't go Protection and try to go in as a tank, unless you are running with a group of understanding friends. Pick-up groups have been known to kick out undergeared warriors, even at the expense of having to wait for a replacement. You will have less issue going in as a DPS warrior if your gear is not top notch.
Leveling is moving so quickly in Shadowlands that until you hit level 50, there won't be a lot of time to fuss with getting the "best" gear. While warriors are very gear dependent, you will find plenty of upgrades just by going through normal questing and dungeon runs at level.
Relics of the Past
Relics of the Past are a new profession reagent added in Shadowlands. When crafting profession items and adding them to the craft, these items will have their item level and required level changed. All crafting professions can craft Relics of the Past, and these are the Relics of the Past that can be crafted:
故往神器 I
: Set the Item Level to 23 and the Required Level to 15.
故往神器 II
: Set the Item Level to 33 and the Required Level to 25.
故往神器 III
: Set the Item Level to 43 and the Required Level to 35.
故往神器 IV
: Set the Item Level to 56 and the Required Level to 45.
故往神器 V
: Set the Item Level to 100 and the Required Level to 50.
These are not very useful for leveling, as you should be outleveling items fairly quickly through your leveling experience in Shadowlands, but it can be a fun experience to level using items from the past.
Stat Weights while Leveling in Shadowlands
Stat Weights are usually not that important while leveling, as considering the nature of quest rewards, you will almost never be able to gather enough for a specific stat or keep a piece of gear for long enough for looking for stats to be a worthy endeavor.
In the case of leveling, a piece with higher item level than the one you have equipped will almost always be better, as pieces with higher item levels will always have more Strength and Stamina.
Best Warrior Leveling Professions in Shadowlands
If leveling quickly is your goal, your best bet is to go double-gatherer of
草药学
and
采矿
. Both skills give small amounts of experience when you mine a node or pick an herb, and you can sell the results in the Auction House (how well these sell for and for how much depends a great deal on your server economy).
剥皮
is also a gathering profession, but unlike
草药学
and
采矿
, it does not give experience.
The classic pairing for a Warrior is
锻造
and
采矿
, since you can wear the things you make. In past expansions, this was largely a losing proposition, since you outleveled any gear you could make. However, in Shadowlands,
锻造
deserves another look. Many of the items you can make have more utility function, such as the return of
多孔磨刀石
and
多孔平衡石
, as well as the ability to make the base items necessary for plate wearers to create Legendary items.
炼金术
is also a good profession for Warriors, since the ability to make their own potions and flasks helps keep them more self-reliant. The cooldown time for Healing Potions being increased from 1 to 5 minutes makes Alchemy a little less useful.
Best Warrior Questing Path in Shadowlands
In Shadowlands, players will go through a massive level squish, and with it, leveling paths are severely changed. The current level path for Shadowlands goes as follows:
Levels 1-10:
Your race's Starting Area or Exile's Reach
Levels 10-50:
Battle for Azeroth zones or other expansion zones via Chromie Time
Levels 50-60:
Shadowlands Storyline or Threads of Fate
Brand new characters are required to do Exile's Reach for levels 1-10 and Battle for Azeroth for levels 1-50. There is no innate advantage to level in whatever zones you'd like at levels 1 through 50. The only advantage is that you will leave Exile's Reach with a close to full set of Uncommon-quality armor.
There are innate advantages to leveling in each expansion, but ultimately it will be up to personal preference. But here are some considerations:
The original Azeroth continents of Kalimdor and East Kingdoms offer great variety and nostalgia, with many of the base lore stories that serve as the base of the entire series.
Burning Crusade has some of the best dungeons of the expansions, with interesting variety and not a lot of complicated mechanics.
Wrath of the Lich King offers a linear story that provides much of the basis of events that are coming up in Shadowlands.
Cataclysm is more like a series of vignettes, with each of the five zones offering a different but contained story line.
Pandaria's beauty and humor appeal to those who like a good story, but also enjoy the more lighthearted side of things.
Draenor introduces the Garrison, a player-built development with your own choices of buildings. Its tone is overall much more grim and dark.
Legion offers the artifact weapons and Class Halls, which give interesting developments to your character as a class member.
Battle for Azeroth, as the expansion just prior to Shadowlands, gives the immediate story just prior to Shadowlands, so is a good choice for players who may be returning after a long hiatus and need to get caught up on the lore.
For levels 50-60, for your first time going through Shadowlands, you are forced to follow the order Bastion > Maldraxxus > Ardenweald > Revendreth, but for subsequent characters, you will be able to choose what zone order you want to go through.

Shadowlands Leveling Changes
Threads of Fate Leveling
Threads of Fate is a new system added in the Shadowlands expansion. The Threads of Fate system allows you to level alts through completion of World Quests, Bonus Objectives, exploring the Shadowlands zones in a non-linear way. This system grants you an early start on Covenant progress and early access to bonuses such as Shadowlands reputations. For more information on the Threads of Fate system, check our guide!

Shadowlands Warrior Leveling Gameplay Mechanics
Warriors are a strength based, plate-wearing, melee class capable of both high DPS and tanking. They are great for both solo and group leveling, but there are some challenges those new to the class should be aware of going into the class.
The fuel for warriors is
怒气
. Unlike Mana for casters or Energy for classes such as the Rogue, Warriors start off with no Rage and have to build it up, then spending it on abilities that consume Rage. They will lose
怒气
over time when out of combat. This can limit which abilities you can use to open your fight. Some abilities generate Rage, and some others spend Rage. Early on, many Warriors find this frustrating as their character constantly tells you "I'm out of rage!". However, there are talents that help abilities generate more Rage, so this mechanic will get easier over time.
Your Rage bar (red) is located on your character portrait just below your health bar (green).
Self-Healing Mechanics on Warriors
Warriors have limited self-heals. This is further complicated by the fact that Shadowlands increased the cooldown of healing potions from 1 minute to 5 minutes, so you will not be able to rely as heavily on potions.
One main ability for self-healing is
乘胜追击
, which heals you for 10% of your maximum if you strike a target within 20 seconds after killing a mob that gives you experience or honor. When improved by the level 25 talent
胜利在望
it increase to 30% of your maximum health. You
must
get the killing blow for this to work; if someone else gets the killing blow -- a group member or even a nearby NPC --
乘胜追击
/
胜利在望
will not trigger.
One of the game-changing concepts I learned playing Warriors of any spec is the concept of "snacks" -- lower-level mobs used to keep up health with
乘胜追击
/
胜利在望
.
乘胜追击
and
胜利在望
combined with AoE spells will often result in ending a fight with nearly full health, since having more than one mob to fight can often run with you healing more damage through
乘胜追击
and
胜利在望
than the mobs can take off collectively. If you have to solo a tough single mob such as a rare or elite, take a few moments to find a few lower-level mobs that aren't heavy hitters ("snacks") nearby to pull into the fight with it. This helps keep your health high by getting the extras down with your AoE attacks and using
乘胜追击
/
胜利在望
to heal yourself whenever a "snack" dies.
This works best in a situation where you are soloing and are guaranteed to get the killing blow on your mobs; this technique can get messed up by other players or even NPCs stealing the final killing blow, because
乘胜追击
/
胜利在望
won't proc if that happens.
Arms warriors also have the level 35 talent
复苏之风
, which gives back 6% health every second for every 5 seconds you have not taken damage. Fury warriors have the level 10 ability
嗜血
, which restores 3% health on use. And Protection Warriors have the level 38 ability
破釜沉舟
, which increases maximum health by 30% for 15 seconds and heals the warrior for that amount. However, none of these are strong self-healing abilities, and it remains one of the core weaknesses of the class.
Shadowlands Warrior Class Abilities
Starting Abilities: Exile's Reach and 1-10 Zones
The first ability all level 1 Warriors receive is
猛击
, which is ironic because with a cost of 20 Rage, it's an expensive ability for a young warrior unable to generate a lot of Rage. It's actually one I recommend not using once you have better options.
At level 2, you learn
冲锋
, an ability that lets you Charge at an enemy between 8-25 yards. This is a very important ability for early Rage generation, as it generates 10 Rage.
At level 3, you learn
盾牌猛击
, which lams the target with your shield, causing Physical damage. It does require an equipped Shield, which Fury and Arms warriors do not use.
At level 4, you learn
断筋
, an ability that does little damage but reduces movement speed of your target for 15 seconds. Great for dealing with "runners". Costs 10 Rage.
At level 5, you learn
乘胜追击
, which heals you for 10% of your maximum health if you hit your next target within 30 seconds of killing an enemy that yields experience and honor. Mastering the
乘胜追击
mechanic is key to warrior soloing survival.
At level 6, you learn
盾牌格挡
, which blocks all melee attacks for 6 seconds, and also requires an equipped Shield to use. Costs 30 Rage.
At level 7, you learn
拳击
, which interrupts spellcasting and prevents all spells from that school being cast for 4 sec. This is a critical group utility skill for Warriors, not just a good self-protection against hard-hitting casters. (After using this for awhile, you also learn that not everything can be interrupted. Hint: if the enemy's cast bar is grey, don't waste Rage on Pummel because it won't do anything)
At level 8, you will learn the second rank of
冲锋
, which causes your Charge ability to generate more Rage.
At level 9, you get your first AoE (area of effect) ability,
旋风斩
. This damages up to 5 targets per strike. It costs 30 Rage, but will become more useful as Rage generation improves.
At level 10, you learn,
斩杀
, attempting to finish off a foe with a huge hit when the enemy is under 20% health.
At level 10, you will have to choose a specialization. You can choose a specialization by pressing N, then selecting one specialization and click on Activate. You will then start learning spells that define the specialization you chose.
If you created an Allied Race Warrior, i.e. Void Elf, Vulpera, etc., you will start as a level 10 Warrior with all the above abilities learned. You can choose a specialization immediately after logging on your Allied Race character for the first time.

Arms is a straightforward damage dealer who uses a single two-handed weapon to attack, and Victory Rush to sustain themselves from combat to combat. Rage is generated entirely through auto-attacks and Charge, and spent on various abilities.
Typically considered the easiest and best leveling spec from 1-110
.
I would suggest anyone trying warrior for the first time to definitely go Fury for dps. It can be a little frustrating until level 40 when you get
旋风斩
, but after that, there's pretty much no reason you can't top the meters in dungeon groups or solo any proper level rare or quest mob. Fury warrior flows smoothly with there never being a time where you're just auto-attacking while waiting for rage or a proc like I've experienced with Arms. I've tried Arms here and there at different levels and it feels very slow and clunky to me.
Over the past 12 years I've played every spec in the game and Fury is the only one that is like autopilot to me. And I didn't even start playing a warrior until Legion.

Victory Rush is now available for all Warrior specializations. I would argue this makes Fury just as viable as a leveling specialization.
