Nathanos Blightcaller is the main bodyguard and champion of Sylvanas Windrunner, as well as a teacher for prospecting Undead Hunters. In life, Nathanos was the only human to be accepted by the elven order of the Farstriders, as well as the only human to ever reach the position of Ranger Lord.
After dying during the Third War, Nathanos was raised by the Lich King and shortly joined Sylvanas' forsaken.
Before World of Warcraft
Nathanos, born Nathanos Marris, was a human of Lordaeron who managed to receive training from High Elves and admitted to the elven order of the Farstriders. During his time with the Farstriders, Nathanos had unprecedented accomplishments, landing the Alliance many victories as a tactical mastermind over a decade of conflicts.
Nathanos appears as Nathanos Marris in
旧希尔斯布莱德丘陵
, before being killed by the Scourge.
Thanks to his accomplishments, he was the only human to ever be raised to the position of Ranger Lord, a position within the Farstriders only below the one of the Ranger-General itself. He was appointed as a Ranger Lord by then Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner.
In the short story
In the Shadow of the Sun
, it was shown that Nathanos' progression within the ranks of the Farstriders was not without prejudices - Farstriders Halduron Brightwing and Renthar Hawkspear talked about his dare to become so famed within the Farstriders.
After what the Horde did to us in the name of that bastard human who called himself
ranger
? How blind do you think I am, Lor'themar? I should kill you. I should kill you and send Sylvanas your head!"
Even through Renthar's outburst, Lor'themar latched onto one word and held fast.
Ranger
, he had said, and not just any—a
human
ranger. As far as Lor'themar knew, there had only ever been one.
"I thought," he began slowly, "that Nathanos Marris died to the Scourge."
Both Aurora and Renthar turned slowly to look at him, their faces as cold as ivory dolls. For the first time since he had arrived for this confrontation, Lor'themar heard his heart hammering in his ears, the lump in his throat making it difficult to swallow.
Thanks to instances like this, although Nathanos always came to the call of Silvermoon when asked of the Farstriders, he much preferred to live in Lordaeron, at his childhood home of the Marris Stead. Sylvanas would frequently visit Nathanos at the Marris Stead, which would eventually raise rumors about the both of them being involved romantically. Nathanos would always negate these rumors, fearing they could hinder the goodwill of her elven compatriots as the Ranger-General.
After the fall of Stratholme and Lordaeron, Nathanos fell at his stead by the hands of the abomination
吞咽者拉姆斯登
, and risen as Scourge. After Sylvanas broke free of the Lich King's control, she scoured the now Plaguelands for signs of Nathanos, and found him as a mere husk of his former self. Still under control of the Scourge, Nathanos attacked Sylvanas, but managed to break free of the Lich King's will. Then, he was named Champion of the Banshee Queen, a title he holds to this day.
Nathanos was fiercely loyal to Sylvanas in life, and said loyalty did not falter in undeath.
Classic WoW
Nathanos could be found at the Marris Stead in the Eastern Plaguelands, where he exacted revenge on Ramstein the Gorger after stalking him for months (
吞咽者拉姆斯登
). From his post, he would issue commands to Horde players all around the Plaguelands.
Nathanos takes on the mantle of the Blightcaller in undeath.
Nathanos' death did not go unnoticed by the Alliance, thanks to the fact that a body was never found. SI:7, the Alliance's Intelligence Agency, would receive multiple reports of Forsaken activity within the Plaguelands. After sending five agents to investigate, with only one returned (and going insane talking about a "Blightcaller"), Master Mathias Shaw sent Alliance players over at the Plaguelands to investigate this Blightcaller (
逝者的荣耀
).
The SI:7 hoped that Nathanos was slain by this so-called Blightcaller, but the truth was far less pleasant. After further investigation, the Alliance reached the conclusion that Nathanos was, in fact, raised in Undeath and became Nathanos Blightcaller. Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, then Regent Lord of Stormwind, then sent Alliance adventurers to kill Nathanos (
重铸秩序
). However, Nathanos managed to survive this endeavor by feigning death.
Cataclysm
After Nathanos survived his assassination attempted, he retreated to the Undercity to help train prospecting Forsaken Hunters.

Nathanos was the only person that Sylvanas confided about what happened in Icecrown Citadel, after she attempted to kill herself and struck a pact with the Lich King's val'kyr. This was related during the short novel
Dark Mirror
.
With a quick nod, he acknowledged the words left unsaid. To him alone had she entrusted the tale of the day after the Lich King's fall, when she'd felt her purpose on this world was fulfilled and sought to claim the eternal rest long denied her. But when she dashed her body upon the frozen rocks beneath Icecrown Citadel, only the relentless hunger of the void awaited her. Though she refused to say the words, he knew her well enough to recognize when true fear gripped her heart.
Her pact with the Val'kyr had saved her that day, a fact for which he was selfishly grateful. And yet, if his queen had been lost, there would be no reason for him to continue this mockery of a life. If she were condemned to an eternity of torment in the darkness, at least he could end his own existence and endure damnation at her side.
"Perhaps," he said, "it would be best to let me go."
Legion
Dark Mirror Novel
Nathanos received a short story at the beginning of Legion,
Dark Mirror
.
At the beginning of the Legion's third invasion of Azeroth, Sylvanas noticed that Nathanos' strength was starting to wane, as his undead skin was going through its inevitable decay. Sylvanas mentioned a ritual that could be done by the val'kyr, one that would reshape his body and make him stronger and more enduring. When Nathanos asked about this ritual, Sylvanas mentioned that it required great strength from the Val'kyr, so they were reluctant to even do it once.
For this ritual, they searched for someone with skin akin to Nathanos, and landed on Stephon Marris, Nathanos' cousin in life. Stephon grew to become a Paladin of the Argent Crusade, whom was captured by Sylvanas. In a secret chamber within the Undercity, Sylvanas and the Val'kyr performed the ritual and gave Nathanos a new body, as well as improved strength. Nathanos looked into the mirror and witnessed a face that was not quite his own anymore.

After being escorted to get a new set of armor, one of the Dark Rangers implied that the reason Sylvanas did this for Nathanos and Nathanos only was that she had feelings for him, but Nathanos rebutted with mentioning how any emotions he had while alive were replaced by rage and contempt in undeath. However, upon staring at the altar that his cousin was at, now holding only a bit of ash and oily residue, Nathanos felt regret for the first time in a very long while.
Stormheim

Nathanos issued the Horde summons to Stormheim and served as an expedition leader to the Vrykul zone.
When the Alliance flying fleet met with the Horde boats, their leaders, Genn Greymane and Sky Admiral Rogers, took the chance to bombard the Horde fleet. Nathanos wanted Sylvanas' safety to be his first priority, but the Banshee Queen ordered Nathanos' fleet to go on the offensive.
Nathanos and his men boarded the Skyfire and started wrecking havoc by killing Alliance soldiers and loading up the boat with vials of blight. Eventually Nathanos and Greymane met on the top part of the boat and battled against each other. On the Horde version of the quest, Nathanos gained the upper hand on Greymane, but the battle was abruptly stopped with the explosion of the Skyfire (
分裂的舰队
). Although Nathanos survived the destruction of the Skyfire, he escaped with wounds that made his face even uglier than before (
游侠之王
).
Nathanos then created a task force to locate Sylvanas after locating the wreckage of Sylvanas' personal boat, The Windrunner (
风行者的命运
). Although he was certain the Banshee Queen survived, he still exacted violent revenge on the remaining Alliance on the area (
凋零者之怒
). With the help of the Horde adventurer, Nathanos managed to track Sylvanas, who did not wish to be pursued (
残忍的战利品
). After locating Sylvanas, Nathanos started assisting the player with obtaining one of the Pillars of Creation, the Aegis of Aggramar, but eventually left the task to the players after locating Sylvanas once more.
The Seething Shore
Sargeras managed to stab Azeroth and destroy Silithus before being defeated and imprisoned by the Pantheon. Soon after this event, the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel discovered a new potent material around Azeroth's wound: Azerite. Nathanos was the responsible for sending Horde players to Silithus, while also overseeing activity in The Seething Shore battleground.

Before the Storm
The Warcraft novel
Before the Storm
talks about the power vacuum left in the Undercity, after Sylvanas became Warchief. Nathanos reported to her after her celebration party that, while many Forsaken were proud of having one of their own as Warchief, others felt a bit miffed that Sylvanas was dedicated to other Horde races, instead of her own.
In the absence of Sylvanas, the Forsaken created their own government organ, the Desolate Council, to attend to the Forsaken's needs in Sylvanas' absence. The Desolate Council wants a meeting with Sylvanas due to reservations in her most recent actions, and talk about the Forsaken's future after Sylvanas' failure to enslave the Val'kyr in Stormheim. Sylvanas confided to Nathanos that she planned on bolstering the ranks of the Forsaken by directing the Horde against Stormwind.
Later in the book, Nathanos relayed an invite to a ceremony by the Desolate Council, which would honor the Forsaken that fell in the wars against the Legion. Nathanos was sent in Sylvanas' stead since she was busy with Horde matters. During Nathanos' meeting with the Desolate Council, they were started by the Forsaken Priest, Alonsus Faol, who was bringing messages through King Anduin Wrynn. Nathanos was livid that Faol was a Forsaken and interacting with Alliance, to which Faol rebutted that he is not part of the Horde, but merely a Priest of the Light.
Nathanos then traveled to Sylvanas' location at Gallywix's Pleasure to talk about Anduin's intentions with the ceremony, advising her to use the meeting to their advantage to motivate the Forsaken to seek bloodlust and revenge from the living. After this reunion, Sylvanas agreed to the meeting, on the terms that the only participating members would be the Desolate Council and a small group of humans.
Nathanos attended the Gathering with Sylvanas and the Desolate Council, observing the events from afar. Even Nathanos was shocked at Sylvanas' ruthlessness after she ordered to execute all Forsaken in attendance of the meeting.
Battle for Azeroth
Nathanos begins seeing more relevancy in Battle for Azeroth, operating as a major commander for the Horde.
Burning of Teldrassil
Nathanos followed Sylvanas to Zoram'gar Outpost in Ashenvale, during the events of the Burning of Teldrassil (
佐拉姆加前哨站
). Upon inspection of the Wisp wall protecting Darkshore, Nathanos thought he and the Forsaken could dispell the wall, although they were warned by Sylvanas to not underestimate the forest's magic (
低空速掠
).
While Sylvanas works on dissipating the wisps, Nathanos and Saurfang separated from the Banshee Queen to find a way through the forests of Felwood (
势不可挡
), eventually reaching Darkshore from the northern divide.
After the Horde secures Darkshore, Sylvanas ordered both Nathanos and Saurfang to secure the perimeter and prepare to invade Teldrassil. As Nathanos was inspecting the battle site, he was ordered by Sylvanas to burn down Teldrassil. Nathanos hesitated for a second, but executed the command after Sylvanas ordered a second time (
杀手女王
).

Warbringers: Sylvanas

Battle for Lordaeron
After Alliance forces managed to breach the outer walls of Undercity, Nathanos led an assault through the back side of Lordaeron Keep along with Lor'themar Theron, but ended up defeated by Alleria Windrunner's arrival with the Void Elves and the Gnomish war machines.
The Horde is eventually forced to retreat into the throne room, where Nathanos received orders to saturate Undercity with the blight. After executing the order, Nathanos fled Undercity alongside the other Horde leaders on a zeppelin.
Stormwind Prison
Nathanos, as well as a Horde elite force composed of First Arcanist Thalyssra, Lasan Skyhorn, Rokhan and the player, went on a top-secret mission on a mission to Stormwind City. This mission was to rescue the Zandalari Emissaries that were caught by the Alliance, Princess Talanji and Zul the Prophet, from the Stockades (
逃出暴风城
). Nathanos assisted the team by coordinating the assault on the docks.
After the successful rescue, Nathanos attempts to persuade Talanji to go Orgrimmar on Sylvanas' orders, but Talanji refused, claiming they were on their boat, so they would follow their orders. The team then sailed on to Zandalar instead.
Kul Tiras
In Battle for Azeroth, Nathanos serves as the envoy for the Banshee Queen and is mainly responsible for the advancement of the
Horde War Campaign
, as well as serving as leader of
荣耀战团
, an elite Horde force that spies on the Alliance in Kul Tiras.
Nathanos as the leader of The Honorbound, atop the Banshee's Wail in Zuldazar.
Through the War Campaign, Nathanos helps set up footholds in Kul Tiras. Nathanos also helps with the retrieving the corpses of past and recently slain Kul Tirans, like Captain Amalia Stone (
桥港之旅
), the tidesage Thomas Zelling (
被遗忘者
), and eventually locates the corpse of captains Marshal M. Valentine and the long-lost older son of Katherine Proudmoore, Derek (
拿了就走
).
Tides of Vengeance
Nathanos, leading the defense of Darkshore, orders you to resurrect Night Elves, including the corpses of the now-deceased Sira Moonwarden and of Captain Delaryn Summermoon. Tyrande confronts him, and empowered by Elune, she strikes down Nathanos and the two Val'kyr accompanying him. As Nathanos was outmatched by the Night Warrior, one of the Val'kyr, Brynja, sacrificed herself to ensure Nathanos, the raised Sira and Delaryn, and the other Val'kyr could escape with their lives.
Nathanos continues acting as a subleader for the Horde during the War Campaign, issuing orders to raid Azerite stocks in Tiragarde Sound (
切断艾泽里特补给
), defend Gallywix in his plans after the attempt on his life by the Alliance (
地精机甲
), and break Lady Priscilla Ashvane out of Tol Dagor (
救出艾什凡
). After this, Nathanos helps oversee the efforts against defending from a direct Alliance attack in Nazmir (
战争降临
), but it is discovered that this was a diversion created by the Scepter of Tides, the ancient relic that was stolen back from the Alliance - The Might of the Alliance fleet standing in front of Dazar'alor, ready to attack. (
).
Nathanos was present for most of the Battle for Dazar'alor with a minor participation role. Of note, he was there after King Rastakhan's death, just in time to see Jaina leave the Zandalari capital, and participates in the fight against Jaina Proudmoore, which results in the archmage escaping with a sliver of her life.
After the Battle for Dazar'alor
The Horde is in a bad spot after the Battle for Dazar'alor, with the Zandalari fleet almost completely obliterated. On Rastakhan's funeral, Nathanos was in support of now Queen Talanji showing her grief by exacting revenge against the Alliance. Nathanos witnesses as Sylvanas raises Derek Proudmoore as Forsaken, stalwart in his queen's resolve.
Once Baine Bloodhoof approaches Horde adventurers with a secret plan, these who have chosen to align with Sylvanas can report his intentions to Nathanos, who grants them full protection and tells them to go along with Baine's plans. This led to the discovery that Baine delivered the revived Derek Proudmoore right back to the Alliance (
苦涩的重聚
), and after Nathanos reports this to Sylvanas, Baine is imprisoned in a huge event in Stormsong Valley. During the imprisonment, Nathanos executed Thomas Zelling, who was also complicit into delivering Derek (
展示力量
).
Rise of Azshara
Nathanos is the leader of the Horde expedition that ends up shipwrecked in Nazjatar, guided by the relinquished Blade of the Black Empire. Nathanos is the only person that displays no surprise at the events leading to the seas opening up below both Alliance and Horde, meaning that this was in Sylvanas' plans already. After the ships are destroyed in Nazjatar, Nathanos disappears.
After Baine is freed with the joint efforts of Thrall, Saurfang, Jaina and Shaw, Sylvanas loyalists report to Nathanos, who displays disgust at the Orc traitors. However, he assures the player this was all part of Sylvanas' plans, and to keep their fate in his queen.
Nathanos Blightcaller: Saurfang, Thrall, the Alliance... it is vexing to allow our quarry to believe they escaped us. But we must trust in the warchief's plan.
Nathanos Blightcaller: Soon your loyalty will face an even greater test. I do hope you prove worthy of the Dark Lady's favor.
Nathanos Blightcaller: I have been recalled to Orgrimmar. Remain in Nazjatar. Keep playing along with these traitorous vipers... until you are summoned.
Patch 8.2.5
With 8.2.5 and the happenings around his queen, Nathanos leads the loyalists to Sylvanas in Ghostlands. After she killed Varok Saurfang and left the Horde, she still focuses on her master plan, with Nathanos on her side. Just before the loyalist in-game cinematic, they bid farewell to each other in a scant yet romantic fashion that shows Nathanos’ true feelings:
Shadows Rising
Sylvanas tasked Nathanos with a special mission - to go to Zandalar and destroy Bwonsamdi. For this task, he took with him Dark Rangers and the undead Nigh Elf Sira Moonwarden, and allied himself with rebel forces in Nazmir. When Nathanos and his forces arrived on the shores of Nazmir, they were spotted by Zandalari scouts, but it was easy to kill the scouts before they could return to report their findings to Queen Talanji of Zandalar.
Sira is unhappy about the task, and argues that their time would be better spent at Sylvanas's side. Nathanos replies that they have been given an important job, saying "We must save this world from itself" and later, "We will be free of the cruelties of this world." These quotes bring to mind Sylvanas's own words, "This world is a prison, and I will set us all free".
The rebel forces Nathanos allied himself with are lead by Apari, a Troll who used to be close friends with Talanji, and who now wishes to see her dead. As Talanji's loa is Bwonsamdi, killing her would weaken him, so Apari's plans fit in nicely with Nathanos's own. Nathanos is disappointed when an assassination attempt on the Troll queen organized by Apari's rebels fails, but he is not the sort to give up after one setback. He organizes a campaign of misinformation in the capital city of Dazar'alor, claims that the Horde has lost faith in Talanji and encouraging her people to do the same.
Apari is able to cast magic that will weaken Bwonsamdi, but she demands something personal and precious from Nathanos first. He brings her a chest of gems, jewelry, and other treasures, but she tells him it's not what she asked for. It must be something irreplaceable, that will hurt to give. Nathanos gives her his old badge, given to him as Sylvanas when he became the first human Ranger Lord of the Farstriders. As he gives it to Apari, he warns her that he expects results with a payment like this. If she fails to destroy Bwonsamdi's shrines, there will be consequences. Later, Nathanos regards a small vial that Sylvanas gave to him, thinking about how now it's the last thing he has from her.
In a later skirmish against Zandalari forces, Sira Moonwarden uses some children as bait in a trap. Nathanos is unamused by her theatrics, though he shows no concern for the children. He worries that they'll only ignite righteous anger in the Zandalari, making them harder to deal with.
For the most part, Nathanos's assault on the shrines of Bwonsamdi goes well, and he prepares his final attack on the Necropolis. While he doesn't need to rest, the Troll rebels do, and he spends some time in reflection while they sleep, thinking again about the badge Sylvanas gave to him. He is tempted to take it back, but reminds himself that it's merely a trinket, an unimportant relic of life. His loyalty to Sylvanas is far more real and reliable.
Nathanos's cousin, Stephon Marris appears to him, but Nathanos knows it is a vision. Stephon died years ago, sacrificed in a ritual where his body was used to help rebuild Nathanos into a stronger form. It's Nathanos's only regret. The vision of Stephon confronts Nathanos, asking how he could have done this to him. Nathanos defends himself, saying he has no choice, that it was Sylvanas's decision - though he flinches, showing he still feels a pang of guilt. Stephon asks how Nathanos can still serve Sylvanas, after all she's done, but this question suddenly strengthens Nathanos's resolve. He stops trying to justify himself to Stephon. His loyalty to Sylvanas is not something he feels even a shred of doubt or regret over. Stephon pushes Nathanos further, warning him that Sylvanas's new power can be taken away, that the new friends she's made on the other side are dangerous, and that she is now chained to the Shadowlands forever. Nathanos only replies that "You do not know her as I do." The trickery fades and Stephon is revealed to be Bwonsamdi, a revelation that does not surprise Nathanos. The two exchange threats, and the loa vanishes.
One he's ready to launch the attack at Bwonsamdi's shrine, Nathanos struggles to force the loa to appear. He threatens Bwonsamdi's worshipers, though they have no more success than he did. Nathanos gives the orders to torture the youngest worshiper, still a child, though he takes no pleasure in it. However, Bwonsamdi appears before the flaying can begin. Bwonsamdi tells Nathanos that his armies are approaching, and Horde forces attack.
In the battle that follows, Nathanos tries to kill Bwonsamdi but fails. The rebels are defeated and he is soon surrounded. Talanji invokes Bwonsamdi's power and it seems like Nathanos will be killed, but then he brings out the vial he was given by Sylvanas and opens it, calling to his lady. A tendril of smoke seeps out from his fingers and from the sky, enveloping him before transporting him to safety, much to the anger and regret of the Horde.
The smoke transports Nathanos to Sylvanas, who has just broken the Lich King's crown. She greets him happily, assuming he has accomplished his task. Nathanos has to tell her he's failed, and her disappointment and anger is clear. He is visibly upset himself, crushing the vial in his hand, and tells her that he will go to his old home in the Eastern Kingdoms, Marris Stead, and await her orders. Sylvanas tells him to go where he wants, but that she expects him to return to her with a way to stop Bwonsamdi's meddling. Nathanos leaves for his home.

I'm sad most of Nathanos's personality never makes it into the game... He was a good character imo in Before the Storm, and he IS an intruiging dude. But blizz has had some issues with MANY great lore characters when it comes to giving them the right light in the acctual game... In the game Nathanos is a ^&*!@#.
