Leveling alts fast to help them get into the action of Dragonflight is a high priority for many players. This guide reviews some of the best ways to streamline the leveling process.
Dragonflight is one of the most alt-friendly expansions of World of Warcraft to date, and part of this requires some very easy preparation from your first character through. We'll briefly review what you need to do to give your alts the best start in life, and then review some of the highest experience-per-hour activities you can do to level up your alts.
Priorities for Your First Character in Dragonflight
Your priority for your first character in Dragonflight is to open up Adventure Mode for you and your alts. This opens World Quests to everyone on your account, and gives your alts the ability to level up anywhere they choose, in whichever order. The requirements to do this are the complete all four Zone Campaigns, which can be tracked through the achievements
觉醒希望
,
欧恩摇滚
,
丈量碧蓝
, and
别让我把它拼出来
. You also need to reach level 68, which you will do easily without touching side quests.
This is a nice, short to-do list. Your first character through should have two priorities:
Dragonflight is chock full of side quests -- and you can always go back and do them later. However, we strongly recommend that you do all the side quests out of Wingrest Embassy, your first quest area in Waking Shore. This opens enough reputation with
龙鳞探险队
to open the ability to see
探险队斥候的背包
s, which are little treasures all over the world full of useful things.
After completing Wingrest Embassy, just stay solely on the campaign until you've finished the last zone campaign in Thaldraszus. Leave side quests until later.
That said, once you reach Ruby Lifeshrine and get your first Dragonriding mount, take some time to collect Dragonriding Glyphs. No quality of life improvement is going to have this great an impact on your gameplay, maybe
ever
, in Dragonflight. Dragonriding Glyphs allow you to improve your mount's speed and Vigor regeneration, meaning you'll be able to fly faster for longer. It's a more than worthy set of side trips. Pick up some flight points on your way to help you along later.
Dragonriding Glyph Locations
Once you've opened Adventure Mode and have full Dragonriding, it's time to bring in your alts.
Fast Alt Leveling Tips for Dragonflight
This section is dedicated to what to do for leveling alts, assuming that you followed the directions of doing the campaign and getting maximum Dragonriding glyphs on your main character.
Gearing
If you didn't do any of the catch-up mechanisms on your alt, take a side trip to the Auction House and make sure to get their iLevel up to at least 220 or so. If you're a pet class, you might not need to worry about this that much, but too-low gearing will slow down getting to 61, which is where you really want to be.
Don't break the bank, because you'll want to make a return trip to the Auction House as soon as you hit level 61. One thing I've done is to level up a poorly-geared alt with Gathering or other professions (more on that below), because at level 61 you can buy crafted gear that's over iLevel 300. There's much more on using Professions for leveling below that might give you some good ideas.
If you follow the questing path as recommended, your gear will stay more than current with what you're tackling as you level. Other than a short trip to the Auction House at 61, you probably don't need to worry much about staying geared.
Questing vs. Dungeon Grinding
This is an age-old debate for leveling speed. For most expansions, the answer has been dungeon grinding. However, in Dragonflight, this is clearly not the case, based on research from a number of different sources.
Questing in Dragonflight is so robust and so dense that it's clearly the experience-per-hour winner in this contest. Even if you have a ready-made dungeon group ready to grind their way to 70 in dungeons, it's still faster to take that same group and quest your way through open world rather than go through dungeons. Sure, you'll get great gear in dungeons and it'll be fun, but if speed is your goal, quest. It also makes you far less reliant on others' skill and availability, since all of the normal questing is very soloable.
Dragonflight is chock full of quests. If you just follow the lines of the campaign, you'll get directed to dense pockets of side quests that will keep you busy in a very narrow area. It's nearly like old-fashioned quest stacking from the pre-Cataclysm days, before questlines were quite so linear.
And if you're really in it for speed, finish out Waking Shores and Ohn'ahran Plans first. Don't skip to either Azure Span or Thaldraszus. The quests in Waking Shores and Ohn'ahran plains are less spread out and more accessible without having to go through unlocks first; many of the quest lines in Azure Span and Thaldraszus require doing things in a certain order to unlock one area over another. They also seem to involve more backtracking to get these open. Waking Shores and Ohn'ahran Plains also have unlocks, but the flow is such that you'll probably be at least level 68 by the time you finish both of these zones.
(That said, the quests that start with
红玉焕生使命
in Ruby Lifepools are not ideal for speed -- these are fairly slow and spread out, so you'll be spending a lot of time hopping around the area without a ton of experience. You might want to skip these. And whatever you do, do NOT talk to the dwarf on the flight point platform, unless you enjoy listening to a very, very long story).
As a side benefit, you'll also be earning valuable reputation as you go.
Profession Leveling: Crafting
Dragonflight introduced experience gains for crafting professions -- and it's a considerable amount at that.
When you create a new item in a crafting profession, you are credited with what's known as a First Craft Bonus. There are some processes that don't give this, but most items you produce will give you First Craft credit. Not only does this give you +1 Profession Knowledge and a small amount of Artisan's Mettle, but it also gives you
11,330
XP each time you create an item for the first time. Just for perspective, at level 60, this represents 6% of a level.
Although this is probably the single fastest way to knock out a couple levels, we recommend waiting until level 68 to start your crafting professions to take advantage of this.
The higher you go, the harder it gets to level, since your gear levels and the mob levels will start to go out of sync before level 70 gear becomes available.
You can use the Crafting Interface to filter for any items that will give you First Craft experience. This will filter out anything that does not give such experience or that you've already created:
You are limited to a maximum of 30 First Crafting completions for gaining experience.
While you'll continue to get Knowledge and Artisan's Mettle, you will no longer get experience after doing 30 First Crafts.
Players who may want to take advantage of this system for leveling characters quickly should probably pick one of the cheaper professions such as
裁缝
or
制皮
followed by
附魔
, switching among professions to keep the cost outlay low. Doing low level Tailoring and Leatherworking will give you plenty of easy disenchantables to do Enchanting without a huge cost outlay. This may not be an option for those who invested heavily in particular professions, but given that some professions are extremely expensive or RNG (Alchemy is one of the worst for this, believe it or not), it might be worth dropping a gathering profession temporarily to work in a cheap option for First Craft Bonuses.
You cannot repeat the same profession for First Crafting gains.
If you've done First Crafts on Tailoring before, you can't drop Tailoring and then relearn it to reset this. The system will still know that it's not really your "first time". Of course, players who have invested a great deal of time and effort into existing professions won't necessarily want to do this.
Profession Overview
Profession Leveling: Gathering
While
草药学
and
采矿
both give Knowledge and Artisan's Mettle each time you gather a new node type, you do not get extra experience with it. However, both still give 2,300 experience per herb or mine, and there is no experience cap. You will have to mine or herb 5 nodes to get the equivalent of one First Craft Bonus in the crafting professions, but you'll be making money along the way.
Skinning still gives no experience, so it's worth dropping temporarily for one of the other gathering professions or for a crafting profession for leveling purposes.
Profession Overview
War Mode
Going into War Mode will add 10% extra experience to your leveling. It's up to you whether you want to risk the occasional ganking.
Rare Mobs and Bonus Objectives
Rare mobs and area Bonus Objectives are great ways to get extra experience as you go. Rares can even
be
Bonus Objectives. Rares often drop interesting loot on top of offering a good amount of extra experience. Bonus Objectives normally just give gold, but since these can be over 14,000 experience to complete (and there are often quests right in the same area), don't leave these undone for later.
World Quests
World Quests don't give significantly better experience than normal quests, so we don't recommend going out of your way to do them. Some may have upgrades, but again, these will be on par with what you get from questing.
If you're questing in an area with a World Quest, by all means do it, since it's a good source of reputation and it will give experience like any other quest. Just consider it a bonus for the area, not something to seek out for its own sake.

A lot of the mining nodes give me 1500xp. I also find nodes that give 7500, 10000 and 15000xp.

A fast way to level alts that I've seen is to go to Nokhudon Hold or the Cobalt Assembly during a primal storm. With rested experience, killing 100 mobs will give 1 level if in a regular group (not a raid, experience is reduced there). Without rested experience, 200 mobs will give one level. All you have to do is tag a mob to get the experience. However, at low levels, some of the abilities of mobs there can one-shot you and your map will not show where the primal storms are.

Dragon races are a pretty quick low-effort way of getting some XP and breaking up the questing monotony if you've already levelled lots of alts and are overfamiliar with the story. You get 5k XP per race for each difficulty plus XP for completing all the Zone circuits. There's enough races in the 10.0 zones for around 2 to 3 levels depending on if you do the challenge versions. My levelling path is to get to 67 / 68 through story quests, WQs and killing rares and then do all the races to finish.
