Hello, Durendil here. I've finally decided to write a soloing guide for any hunter out there who doesn't need other classes. This guide will mainly focus on Beast Mastery, but many points are not specific to a specialization - the soloing specs have changed expansion by expansion. I'll cover all the basics and most advanced tactics.
Current state of hunter soloing
To give an idea of the hunter potential, here are the achievements of hunter soloers in Legion.
As of this moment the first kills in raids are made by
Durendil
and
Shoot
. The name in the table corresponds to the first soloer to down the boss. We were far more interested in "new" bosses than the Heroic ones, so with the exceptions of Il'gynoth and Cenarius most Heroic kills were made with far more gear than needed.
For the dungeons, I used
myself
as a basis, and only considered runs in time. As always, don't hesitate to notify me in the comment if I missed a solo from another hunter.

General principles
Hunters are very well balanced when it comes to soloing due to our many tools, good resistance with our pets and high damage.
Before reading this guide I would suggest taking a few minutes to read the
Overview of soloing
for general principles and tips.
If you're in a hurry, the short version is:
Soloing easy dungeons or raids for profit is fun, extreme soloing is even more fun!
The soloing community is spread out, but you can still contribute.
When soloing, analyzing the mechanics is key. Timings, combos and trigger conditions are usually more complex then they seem at first glance.
Soloing is a mix of survival and damage.
Making use of every tool you have including talents, gear, consumables, legendaries and more is the key to getting a kill.
To detail the "mix of survival and damage" point, the objective of a solo is to kill your target, not rank on logs. Many enemies have a damage requirement due to a
狂暴
or having to kill them before running out of defensive cooldowns. Maximising damage while dealing with the boss's abilities makes a solo easier and sometimes is required for a kill. However, if you take too much damage you will die, so you must also aim to have enough health and avoid abilities when you can, despite losing dps. Hence the importance of finding the right balance for a boss.

Your Character
Before attempting to solo, you have to prepare your character. When it comes to soloing, the more tools you have the better. And when it comes to utility, there is a difference between small advantages that are always useful and big advantages that only have niche uses.
Spec
Before soloing, you will want to choose a spec.
Beast mastery
: the best for soloing for several reasons. It has the most durable pets, which is very important for pet tanking. Pets also do much of its dps, so they hold aggro far better. Some of the best pets are exotic. They have absolute mobility and no casting. This guide will consider you are familiar with the hunter class and beast mastery in particular, although it will contain a lot of hunter information not restricted to a single spec.

Marksmanship
: it can have niche uses - it benefits more from leech and has more range. It also doesn't lose dps when the pet is in tenacity. So it can be used if pet survival isn't an issue, although if aggro needs to be kept you might be forced to slow down dps a bit at the start and after a pet rez -
Glyph of Misdirection
is no longer a thing.
Survival
: being stuck in melee removes a lot of soloing advantages from the hunter, and if the pet dies it will cause issues (the 7M crit from boss kind of issue). Also, a melee needs 110% aggro and not 130% to take aggro. It also has no
误导
. I dont know the spec well enough to know its upsides, but I suppose it could work if the pet keeps aggro and doesn't die.
Talents
Let's check the hunter talents. Although there is a "best build" for most situations, don't forget talents because they are niche. We'll start with the default talent tree then analyze the talents. I will not be focusing on dps unless a talent truly underperforms, refer to raiding guides or simulations for damage considerations.
Level 15 talents:
王牌猎人
: Useful against a boss whose phase one is very difficult but whose other phases require less damage. But even then probably not worth it.
眼镜蛇之道
: Pure dps talent.
血之气息
: Other than dps considerations, the increased focus can help make sure you have enough for
复活宠物
. But you can also manage your focus, so it merely increases the margin for error.
Level 30 talents:
践踏
: Allows your
凶暴野兽
to generate sizeable AoE aggro on spawn, distracting mobs for a few seconds if neither you nor your pet are attacking them yet.
倒刺射击
: Makes your pet generate more aggro. But you lose
凶暴野兽
, which is very useful.

: May be valuable if there are exactly two targets, but unless a simulation specifically says so it is underpowered at the moment compared to

Level 45 talents:

: The best mobility talent, helping you to get away from mobs (for example to rez your pet), or simply travel faster. The removal of roots and slows has a lot of niche uses and can sometimes dispel abilities that deal damage such as

: Helpful if you need

more than once every 20 seconds in order to avoid an ability. But sill very dependent on RNG.
开拓者
: According to math, this is a small increase compared to

if you run for at least 20 seconds without attacking (pet auto attacks allowed). Probably even more niche than

Level 60 talents:
兽行成群
: Dps talent. But by reducing the time between bestial wrath, it makes your dps more consistent - good if you don't want to be out of CDs for an add spawn.
狂野之怒
: Opposite of the previous one - increases your burst.
: Dps can be worth it for pure AoE, but the increase in pet damage mostly shines if you spend a lot of time not being able to attack but your pet can.
Level 75 talents:
束缚射击
: Shines in dungeons, where you usually want to use the stun to buy time while you rez your pet. Some adds can be stunned on bosses.
翼龙钉刺
: Useful if you need to CC two mobs at once but can afford one of them waking up after 30 seconds.

: Use if you need a single target stun - for example, to interrupt a spell or ability such as

Level 90 talents:

: Great for any fight, and in particular when adds are involved. When used during a dps downtime it can help you finish an add faster.

: It's a trap! Use if you need to quickly kill or damage low-health spread out adds, but the loss of 60 focus and channeled time might delay the timings for

Level 100 talents:

: The most bursty and has an AoE component. However even in a 1-minute fight it's usually not worth it.

: The best defensive talent. 30% is huge. Only downside is you will lose even more dps from the tenacity specialization if you are not using

Race
The race of your character can affect its soloing possibilities. I separate the racial traits in two categories : performance enhancers that act similar to gear increases, and utility abilities that give hunters another tool to work with. Since all races have passives that increase or decrease something by 1% or 2% I won't be mentioning those.
Numbers were calculated with 7M health and 2M dps, corresponding to patch 7.3.5 with 975 gear.

Profession
Most professions have little impact on soloing. Those that create the consumables we use can be real money-savers, such as

: it has lots of nice toys, which are even more options. This expansion the only toys used in soloing were

Pet Tanking
Unless things go horribly wrong, you usually want your pet to take the melee hits from the boss. Melee hits are usually the first source of damage by far in a fight. Your pet is like your party tank, but you're in full control. It goes without saying that pet management is paramount for soloing, you can't just forget about your pet as you do in raids.
In an easy setting, pet tanking consists of using
误导
on your pet and doing the normal rotation, adding
治疗宠物
when needed. Of course, difficult bosses aren't that easy. For this section, we'll start off by ignoring abilities specific to a pet family or spec, and then we'll see how those can complete pet tanking.
Pet survival
In order to have your pet survive, you must manage its health. First things first: pets inherit part of your stats, so versatility, leech, armor, and others function the same as they would on your hunter.
To reduce damage taken, the only non-pet specific ability is
误导
with the trait

. If you don't need it for aggro, use it as a damage reduction.
All heals coming from the hunter are percentage-based.

heals 5% health per 2 seconds, and you want to use it as part of your rotation. If you can afford it, use it when you are focus starved or when you would use

, but not at max focus or during burst. If pet survival is tight, it takes priority over anything other than

is a lay on hands for the pet, giving it a second health bar. Make sure to use it before it dies or it will be wasted - pets usually take constant, spread out damage, so with practice using it at the last possible moment becomes easy.
Since most of the healing a pet takes is dependent on his health, its resistance is very dependent on stamina.
Finally, pets have a decent dodge chance - about 25% with
自然敏捷
.
If your pet dies, it is time to revive it. The objective here is to avoid getting a melee hit, especially since it can crit.
Your tool is

. Two seconds cast, affected by haste. It completely heals your pet, so sometimes timing your pets death is a valid strategy. You will have to

before the rez, or after.
After: if you can, take your distance. Against stunnable mobs, stunning them while you rez is a good option.
逃脱
can help you get away. You can also rez while the boss is casting. If all else fails,

can buy you time.
Before: only works if the boss has other targets, such as

. While he hits his other target you can revive the pet and send it back. Note that this will probably result in a dead

, making you lose dps. Whatever the situation, having your pet die will usually cost dps.
Aggro management
A BM hunter usually generates a little more aggro than his pet. However, using
误导
is enough in most situations, and if you grab aggro

should work. Remember that you need 110% aggro in melee and 130% in range to take aggro, so if you are high do not come near the boss.
When soloing a dungeon, if there is any difficulty, do not pull several trash without
误导
, or it will get hectic.
Of course, this is a moot point if
低吼
works. But the vast majority of dungeon bosses and all raid bosses are immune to it.
If you want your pet to lose aggro, you can use
解散宠物
or
装死
.
凶暴野兽
is another possible tanking tool. If you haven't generated aggro, or the boss is static, it can soak a few hits.
Pet Commands and Movement
Pets have 6 commands. The first is attack (/petattack), that will make it attack your target. If he is in assist mode (/petassist) or defensive (/petdefensive), if a target dies he'll switch to the next. If in passive mode (/petpassive) he'll run back to you.
To move your pet, you can use move to (/petmoveto) but it can be a bit wonkish. You can also use stay (/petstay) to make him stay in place. In both cases, putting the pet in passive will make him go back to his assigned spot. The easiest way to move your pet where you want, however, remains putting it on passive (or reclicking passive if he's already in it) in order to make him follow you while you move your character to the desired spot.
Pet spec and family
Spec
Depending on the situation, you will want to use different pet specs. All specs have passive abilities and active abilities. Note that

Cunning
is the least used of the pet specs in soloing. Its on-use abilities are far too situational.
Ferocity
is best as far as dps is concerned. It also has a very good utility ability in
凤凰之心
- it's an instant revive pet, and can be used when stunned or feigning death, so it has niche uses.
Tenacity
is the default soloing spec. It has far more survivability than a ferocity pet, a little AoE aggro generation, and a decent defensive cd with . The drawback is that using
野兽守护
without
顶级捕食者的爪子
causes a 10% dps loss compared to a ferocity pet.
Pet Family
Pets have their own abilities depending on their family. A full recap can be found in
a guide made by BananaStalker
, but for soloing there are only three kinds of pets that stand out:
Hunter healing
:

is only available to the exotic

family. In legion, it heals for about 700-800k, which is very low. But it remains the only pet ability that slightly increases the hunter's survivability and can make a difference.
Heroism
: for
远古狂乱
, you have a choice between a

or a

(AKA
best hunter pet
). The
熔岩犬
is better because if used for tanking because of
熔火之皮
(60K per hit taken, can crit), but it is exotic. Usually, you take out this pet, dismiss it and use heroism during the cast, summon your tanking pet then pull.
Defensive
: there are many defensive skills, but they are unbalanced, so
甲壳护盾
is the most powerful by far. You have the choice between a
海龟
, a
石化蜥蜴
, a
甲虫
, a
螃蟹
or a
页岩兽
. But go for
海龟
, they are adorable. This ability can be left on autocast and/or manually activated in prevision of a damage spike.

Gear and consumables
You won't necessarily be using your default raiding gear for soloing. For all my calculations I'll suppose a hunter doing 2M dps with 7M health.
Stats
Stamina
: stamina increases your maximum health, allowing you to survive more damage. Same for your pet. Since in Legion both pet and usually hunter (
莎拉达希尔的根须
) take percentage-based heals, it's usually worth the loss of healing from leech if you have some.
Leech
: leech is a small source of self healing, especially in situations when you can dps a lot. In the default spec, hunter and pet each do around 35% of total damage. So theoretically, 1% leech heals as much as 1,75% of
治疗宠物
on the pet and 3,3% of
莎拉达希尔的根须
. In practice, the way leech works on pets has not been fully tested. So it can help a little and is useful if you can't use your usual sources of healing, but has only a small impact if you don't have a lot of it.
Versatility
: despite being underpowered as far as dps is concerned, it lightly reduces damage taken.
Avoidance
: reducing damage taken from area of effect spells can be useful on some fight where they are a significative source of damage.
Speed
: useful if you are kiting, or simply trying to time a mythic+ solo. Seldom serves on bosses, but can give some quality of life improvements.
Legendaries
Choosing the right legendaries for the job is important. Let's check the legendaries from a soloing perspective before talking about combos.
Damage legendaries:
顶级捕食者的爪子
: the Best in Slot for damage if your pet is in tenacity spec, to the point where it's nearly mandatory. Not worth it if you can afford a ferocity pet without having pet survivability issues.
奎普拉,艾瑞达战争指令
: combos well with
野兽守护
and T21, making it the second best dps gain.
蛇语者之舌
: third best dps gain. The extra leech isn't very strong, but it's the only legendary to increase pet survivability.
Healing legendaries:

: the Best in Slot for healing. Reduces your mobility, but it's seldom important.
普瑞达兹,萨瓦里克的杰作
: gives you a nice absorb shield. Heals for about 30% as
莎拉达希尔的根须
, but more importantly allows you to not get one hit by massively hard-hitting abilities.
暗影猎手的巫毒面具
: heals more than
普瑞达兹,萨瓦里克的杰作
and allows you to regen to full health in a few seconds. However, having to stay in
假死
will cost dps. But if you have to
假死
anyways, it's really strong.
Utility legendaries:
荒野的召唤
: reducing the cooldown of
灵龟守护
can be useful if you've calculated you need it twice in two minutes. Having
猎豹守护
more often is nice when farming old raids or kiting.
塞弗斯的秘密
: increases baseline movement speed, with massive sprint if you can CC something. For kiting or farming old raids, or running back after a wipe.
警戒栖木
: won't help you kill anything, but for farming old raids it is better than
荒野的召唤
. But not worth the money if you're low on funds.
Other Legendaries:
基尔加丹的炽燃决心
: deals high AoE burst damage, but in the few cases where it would be useful you probably need it more often than every 1:15 minutes.
狩猎大师之魂
: less powerful than other legendaries, but the only dps legendary other than
顶级捕食者的爪子
that works if you are stunned (since you can still cast
狂野怒火
).
命令护肩
: less powerful than other legendaries.
七狮群啸
: less powerful than other legendaries.
大军之印
: can increase healing received from crucible traits, but less powerful than other legendaries. By the way, crucible traits that increase your survival are a plus for soloing.
Usual pairs

BiS: in the vast majority of situations, you want to use

Trinkets
Of all equipment pieces, trinkets are the most unique. Between raids and Mythic+, we have a lot of options to choose from.
For damage, you want the usual trinkets -
single target
,
multi target
,
burst
and
multi-burst
.
For survival, don't hesitate to grab every trinket you can get. Rather than watching it go to the vendor, grab it if it's interesting.
The first kind of trinket you want is stamina trinkets, such as
沙图格之眼
. They increase your pets survivability and yours.
However, stamina trinkets are not necessarily the strongest trinkets for the hunter's survival. Two great examples come from

. Those items massively boost survivability in constant damage and burst situations respectively.
Those are only examples, make sure to hoard trinkets that have any effect increasing your survivability.
Consumables
When attacking a boss, choose between

. For the food buff, there are options such as

There are also quite a few potions that have an effect unavailable to your class.

Just because you can't do something doesn't mean there isn't an item that can do it for you.

Analyzing bosses and dealing with abilities
We'll begin with analyzing boss abilities, talking about pets, and finally what tools us hunters have to deal with it.
Boss abilities
Before downing a boss, you will have to try a lot in order to understand the mechanics, even if you know the fight. Given that they often aren't coded with the idea of a soloer or pet tank in mind, they may not behave as you would expect.
You first want to check how much damage the boss does on your pet with his
Melee Attack
. It will give you an idea on how much you must invest in pet survival. You also want to check his
狂暴
timer, in order to gauge the minimum dps.
Since all abilities focus on you, you will be dealing with a lot of overlaps, and there are unexpected mechanics that can arise. For example, on
海拉
,
海洋污染
seems to be coded to deal 10% more damage (non multiplicative) per tick. But if reapplied constantly to the same person, the damage increase will stay - and a debuff meant to do 2M damage in 10 seconds will end doing more than 15M in 10 seconds after a few minutes.
You will also want to understand the timings. For example, the
艾萨拉之怒
fight: if the timing isn't disrupted by the phase change, the second
奥术炸弹
will explode and stun you during a
压抑深渊
, forcing you to use
灵龟守护
or be defenseless before the massive burst of damage. And the third will stun you during

, so if you are in melee range at the time it will hurt. But changing phase right as he is about to cast

changes the timers to something more manageable. There may be multiple conditions for a phase change -

at the 6:40 mark, whichever comes first.
Then there is the fact you are a pet class. This will cause "tank" abilities to work differently. There are spells that do not work such as

, and there are others, such as

, that need their target to be in tank spec. Some abilities don't even function with one player - on

requires a minimum of 2 people to activate, and
阿格拉玛的化身
can go on a non-tank player but will never be used twice in a row on the same target - hence 50% uptime on a soloer and not 100%.
However, since Legion came out new bosses have become very wonky when it comes to tank abilities: sometimes they cast on the pet, sometimes on you. The best example is

: he casts

on the hunter and

on the pet (thanks lfr). It's very inconsistent:

The same principles apply to trash packs.
Hunter abilities
Once you've understood how the boss's abilities work, you must also understand how they interact with hunter abilities.
You can check if abilities can be outranged. Some spells have a 40-yard range, same as you. Range is calculated from the center of the attacker to the limit of the hitbox. As such, on
伊凡尔
you need to be at the absolute maximum of your rage to avoid
奥术冲击
(40 yd), while on the infamous
瓦拉加尔唤雷者
you have a little wiggle room. If the range of an ability is 50-60 yards, if it is a cast you can try to

and run when he starts casting.
Note that outranging also works on instant spells, and sometimes the boss will cast them and they don't affect anybody - so you can come back in range. Other times he won't cast it until someone is in range, meaning you can only delay.
Line of Sight works like outranging: if you LoS

it will miss you completely and you can resume dps. But on
格罗斯
, although you can LoS
燃烧护甲
, he will not cast it (so it won't go on cooldown) if no targets are in LoS - the instant he sees you again, he will cast it on you.
Then there is

. Unless the boss ignores it or despawns, it can help avoid all kinds of abilities. Some will affect you even through
假死
, and others will not cast until you get up. For the latter, if they have a cast time, feign death during the cast and see what happens. Same with
灵龟守护
, it can be used before an ability to try to deflect it or after and ability to deal with a debuff. Or as a self heal.
Finally, some abilities, such as
炼狱箭
, are targeted bolts that focus on a location, not you -
逃脱
or running really fast can help you avoid it.
In conclusion, you must learn the boss's abilities, if you can avoid them, and prepare a cooldown rotation. Theorycrafting and analyzing videos of your tries can help a lot.

Tools and tips
Videos
Some people prefer to learn on their own, some prefer examples. Right now the current extreme soloers are
Durendil
and
Shoot
. If you have trouble deciding which videos to watch, here are some recommandations:
First, basic videos that mainly focus mostly on one aspect of soloing:
Optimizing damage:
Gul'dan
, this boss had no survival requirement at all except wearing the legendary pants, but had a nearly 2M dps over 12 minutes damage requirement.
Skorpyron
is about splitting your dps between adds and the boss effectively, with some pet survival added during adds.
Pet tanking:
Ursoc
is the a great example of a fight where your pet will die a lot, but you need to help him survive as long as possible and revive him fast in order to not lose too much dps for berserk.
Tichondrius
is another example because if your pet dies when the adds are active, it's far worse than a death before the boss stops moving for a while.
Hunter survival:
Star Augur Etraeus
is an awesome fight where you need to dps but also need to spend time in
假死
to avoid abilities and heal up. Timing is also very crucial here. Incidentally, Shoot made
his version
and the survivability/damage was extremely similar despite us using different legendaries (
暗影猎手的巫毒面具
and
普瑞达兹,萨瓦里克的杰作
).
Dealing with trash:
Arcway+9 teeming
. Because the trash in this instance is so good I just wanted more.
Then, more advanced videos:
Xavius
: aggro management, pet survival management, then damage management and hunter survival management. Also, the pet got the kill, so it's epic :)
Helya
: a lot of theorycrafting and defensive coooldown management, as well as minimizing the time she isn't being tanked.
Useful Macros
You may want to keybind or add in macros some pet abilities if you need to time them well. To macro a spell, write "/cast <spell>".
This isn't an exhaustive list, just those linked to soloing.

Other tips
Entering a raid on your own
:
If you need to be in a raid group to enter a raid, or want to reset a dungeon and need to be in a group, it is possible to open the group finder then start a group - this will make you the leader of a single player group, and you can switch to raid etc. Note that if you do "leave party", you will be ported out after one minute, which is an easy way to leave a dungeon.
Start small
:
If you want to learn to solo, old raids and normal/heroic dungeons are a good place to start. Try to find challenging content that will force you to better yourself, but with a certain margin for error.

has been playing his hunter since Vanilla. During WotLK, he decided to try soloing because the alternative was playing another class. He started with BC heroic dungeons, and followed with

. It was then that he ran out of guides, so he started creating his own strategies for Zul'gurub (level 60 version), Zul'Aman (level 70 version) and

. He continued soloing expansion to expansion, getting the first hunter kills on

made his debut.
He plans on keeping on soloing and pushing his hunter to his limits. He has no plans to play another class, or a petless hunter. He is excited for BFA because the raids of Legion will be fun to solo, and because the introduction of Mythic+ has given him greater quantities of challenging soloing material.
