Welcome to Wowhead's Holy Priest Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.1! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Holy Priests in PvP including avoiding crowd control, setting up kills, and some common mistakes that Holy Priests make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Holy Priests in PvP for different situations. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much healing as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Rotation and Abilities
This section will cover the tools and spells used by Holy Priests in PvP and how to utilize them correctly. I’ll also explain a 'soft' rotation to follow based on certain priorities/procs and spells.
Healing

- This is your fast single target healing ability. Triggers

- This is a slower (and cheaper) single target heal. This spell is extremely efficient for its mana cost, cast when you aren't worried about dying but still want to keep your team It triggers

- This is an Area of Effect (AoE) Heal that is best used when allies are stacked up or as a burst instant heal as needed.

- Since Holy has moved away from

. This is an instant small bit of healing and damage. Make sure not to break cc with it!

- This ability is a personal defensive cooldown that increases your health and provides a 30% heal. This essentially translates into a burst HoT ability for yourself. It can be very helpful when being trained and is best used preemptively before a stun. The artifact trait

- This is an AoE channeled ability that heals a decent amount over eight seconds. Note that it no longer bounces your

for free. It applies a 10% healing bonus to all allies within range and is great for healing out of line of sight to avoid interrupts, dealing with

, or mixing up your fake casting patterns by using a channeled heal.

- This ability is now a one minute cooldown if it expires without triggering the heal effect due to the talent

. It increases healing by 40% for 10 seconds and will prevent a killing blow, instead bringing the affected target to 40% HP and cancelling the effect. Usable while stunned, this is your 'last resort' button.

- This is your main DPS ability. It triggers

and can proc

- This is an Incapacitate that turns into an extremely powerful four second stun which is undispellable and immune to a Paladin's

when specced into

. Since it can be reset by

, this is one of the best stuns in the game and is often key to Holy Priest arena compositions. In comps or situations where an extra stun is not needed, it can be used as an instant Incapacitate.

- This is a direct damage spell that applies a small Damage over Time (DoT) effect. It is often used to kill Shaman totems or to keep stealth classes in combat.

- This is an AoE spell similar to Arcane Mage's

. It is effective when used to get enemies out of stealth. It also now provides a very small heal!
Utility

- This is a 30 second cooldown, 30 second duration 'ward' against the next CC that is applied to the target. It can be very useful for preventing CC on you or your allies. It is often used on cooldown on yourself, but against teams that can

it should be used when you have enough magical buffs on yourself to protect it (such as

, etc.) or as a substitute for

just before incoming CC is applied.
- This is a PvP talent that causes most damage and spells to miss you for four seconds and boosts your movement speed by 50% on a 45 second cooldown. It's definitely one of your most powerful abilities and can be used in conjunction with

to prevent as much crowd control as possible. The spell should be traded against enemy cooldowns when being trained to prevent as much damage as possible. Note that it does not cause interrupts to miss.

- This ability grips the targeted ally to your location. It's great for fixing positioning, preventing enemy setups, or as an extra mobility spell for your teammates. It is generally most effective when your partners are stuck in stuns.

- This spell controls your enemy target, and shares diminishing returns with

, and Blind effects. This is your only spell on the Shadow school instead of Holy, and can be used to bait enemy interrupts or as an extra ability to cast if locked on the Holy school (make sure you're always doing something!). Much like the Druid spell

, using this in effective ways such as MCing enemy cooldowns or defensives at low HP can be very impactful to a game.

- Holy Priest's 'new' ability this expansion, this seven second instant AoE fear ability improves our toolkit by a lot, allowing for more viable set-up compositions.

- While not used much anymore, this ability can be useful against Unholy Death Knights if you see an opportunity.

- This ability removes one magical buff from an enemy for a significant amount of mana. Use it sparingly to remove key enemy buffs such as

. It can occasionally be used to overrun teams, but overuse of this ability in the wrong situation can lead to falling behind in healing or wasting your mana.

- A powerful casted dispel with a large mana cost, it removes all harmful magic debuffs from friendly targets and one magic buff from each enemy within range. It is capable of dispelling
off friendly targets or

off enemies. Now with a 45 second cooldown, use MD in choice situations as to not waste it and be unable to dispel something more impactful later.

- After they die, Holy Priests continue to be able to cast heals on allies for 15 seconds thanks to this ability. It is most effective in battleground scenarios or occasionally to help achieve a rare cross kill or two in an arena.

- This is a channeled mana-recovering ability that can be useful in RBG settings, downtime, or in desperate moments where you have fallen behind in mana. It is occasionally helpful if looking to 'juke' interrupts with a channeled spell.

- This should be your go-to pick to replace the talent Holy Ward against Mages to remove their Polymorph from the game for 20 seconds. It can also be used against Shadow Priests to deny their main source of damage. An impressive utility spell that should be utilized to its maximum!

Effective Strategies for Holy Priests in PvP
This section will cover optimal positioning and useful strategies to give yourself an edge over your opponents.
Early Game
Before each game starts, make sure to apply
神圣守卫
to yourself 5-10 seconds before the gates open. This essentially lessens the time until your next Ward is free. Next, apply
愈合祷言
to an ally as soon as the gates open. This builds pre-healing for any incoming damage. From there, apply
恢复
to allies and 'trash' magical debuffs to yourself (

,
天堂之羽
, etc) that are meant to protect your Ward from teams with a

.
Getting into a good position as fast as possible is key to success with a Holy Priest. Against teams looking to CC you, find a position close to a pillar so you can avoid them more easily. While playing double caster Holy Priest compositions, the popular 'triangle' positioning can be very effective. Your teammates should stand 20-30 yards away from each other in the center or sides of the map and you should be near the farthest pillar away from the enemy team but close enough to heal your allies, creating the 'triangle' the strategy is named after.
When playing CC comps such as RMP, look for an aggressive position for an early

, but try to be as close to a pillar as possible for an easy getaway.
Dealing with Being Trained
心灵尖啸
has improved our ability to deal with melee immensely. Aside from Warriors, most melee will have a more difficult time killing Holy Priests this expansion. Punishing these kinds of offensive pushes by double fearing DPS and swapping to healers is a strong way to take advantage of Holy Priest's new toolkit. Remember to switch to
天使之慈
when expecting to be trained!

is still a good option on some maps or in 2v2 if you're really struggling.
With this in mind, depending on what composition you’re playing, the main strategy for surviving will change. As a double caster comp, you’ll likely want to stand in the open (even though it may seem counterproductive) so your teammates can provide the necessary peels and counter-pressure to either force the enemy team to retreat or kill them outright.
Communicate with your team about times they can provide peels (Windwalker Monk's
扫堂腿
, Rogue's
偷袭
, Balance Druid's
旋风
, etc.) to allow you to cast safely. Make sure not to overlap with your

or
圣言术:罚
.
Don’t be afraid to get locked on unimportant casts while you are at high HP and the enemy team has no offensive cooldowns up. Casting

after being interrupted on your Holy school (or in order to bait interrupts) is important in many scenarios as well, but you should be cautious of the Diminishing Return (DR) with
旋风
or
恐惧
when playing with Balance Druids or Warlocks.
As a general rule, it is usually best to
after you’ve been stunned instead of preemptively while being trained. As good as it is to immune a stun, many times you'll be left with no ways to recover from the constant pressure without a properly timed
. The two main uses for this ability while being trained are to try to use this ability during enemy offensive cooldowns to reduce the most damage possible or to get a guaranteed

while you know the enemy team cannot interrupt it. Fading a stun should be a bonus, not the main objective.
Set Up for Kills
Holy Priests have several new ways to contribute to a kill. The stun on

is great for keeping kill targets in place still and

is an effective follow-up - try to use these abilities together as they complement each other well.

is a great way to cross-CC the non-kill target after executing this combo. Adding the occasional

to purge off enemy HoTs can be an effective way to help secure a win as well.
A standard setup while playing a comp such as Elemental Shaman/Destruction Warlock/Holy Priest will look like this:

by four seconds, it is fine to settle for developing a stun for your next setup instead of committing.
When playing a composition with a Windwalker Monk, look to

the enemy healer off Incapacitates while your Monk stuns the kill target.
When playing compositions like Elemental/Rogue or Balance/Rogue, look to

Incapacitate the healer off a

or on enemy DPS as cross-CC.

when possible without compromising your defensive position.
When playing RMP, I’d recommend a

Avoiding Crowd Control
Holy Priest has several ways to stop crowd control on its own, but

have relatively long cooldowns. You should use them in coordination with your partners' stops. Overlapping an interrupt and

cast can be devastating. Always communicate with your team about who can stop the next CC and which cooldowns you still have.
Another great way to deal with an enemy setup is to preemptively

Common Mistakes Holy Priests Make
There are a few fundamental things that people forget when speccing to Holy Priest in PvP.
You're a Priest; a versatile healer who does damage, purge, damage.
Do not be afraid to do damage, to purge, just be offensive; you can solo win the game for your team if you do things like this correctly. Even if your damage is lower than other healer's, it's still a good amount of damage that should be thrown out when available. For example, Holy Fire does 3-4k damage instantly and this can make or break a kill attempt. Keep your Shadow Word: Pain active as this is a lot of damage over time and can really help provide your team with the extra kill potential that you might be missing out on. Keep in mind, as Holy Priest you're pretty global capped on what you're doing so choose your globals wisely. Strictly talking, in 2v2 these should always be active. It's a different story in 3v3 as you have to be more careful with what you're doing!
Misuse of Holy Word: Serenity
Overusing or under-using healing is a very easy way to fall behind as a Holy Priest. Your teammates will often be taking significant damage and if you're unable to get a

cast off, it’s your job to correctly judge if you will need to cast

by itself or add a

. Having to wait for your

to come off cooldown can sometimes cost you the game.
Put simply, it’s very easy to find yourself with a healing increase spell but no instant or powerful healing to combine it with, so it gets used at sub-optimal times. This also applies vice versa as you could have some powerful instant healing, but no healing increases to make it effective. Aiming to use these abilities together when necessary will greatly improve your gameplay and allow for fewer mistakes. It’s often much better to be patient and wait for your healing to line up. You don't want to be caught with a low HP teammate.
Interrupts and CC
Another mistake most Holy Priests tend to make is not use both of their schools of Magic to their full advantage, nor do they rotate their CC effectively. This is easily fixed because if you get interrupted on Holy, you can cast a Mind Control just to stop any extra incoming damage until your interrupt duration is over, basically immuning the interrupt that the enemy team just did on you!
Onto rotating your CC correctly, this ties into what I just mentioned with Mind Control as you have a lot of CC with
圣言术:罚
and
心灵尖啸
along with Mind Control, and you can shut down someone solo for 15+ seconds. For example, Chastise on the healer, Psychic Scream on them afterwards, into a Mind Control. After that you can Mind Control the DPS you're killing to deny healing into a half duration Mind Control. After this, Smite to reset your Chastise, then a few seconds later you can Chastise the healer into another Psychic Scream, it's almost endless!
Utilizing Psychic Scream
This is Holy Priest's newest ability and it changes the fundamentals of the class in many compositions. Correctly finding opportunities to follow up your team's crowd control or to cross-CC a secondary target changes the way Holy Priest will position this expansion. As Holy Priests are particularly vulnerable to swaps and often are no longer specced into both

and
at the same time, we are easily punished for bad offensive play.
Be very careful with how and when you choose your moments to commit to a

.
