Dragonriding is one of the new systems coming in
Dragonflight
, a new flying system that allows you to fly much faster than usual. Although players go through a tutorial when first learning how to Dragonride, you might still be left with questions on how the system works. In this guide, we delve through the very basics of Dragonriding, so you can learn the ins and outs of the system and become a better rider!
Upcoming Dragonriding Additions in Patch 10.2
Dragonriding will receive the following additions in Patch 10.2:
A new Dragonriding mount is being added, the
, obtained during the Emerald Dream storyline;
8 new Dragon Glyphs can be discovered in the Emerald Dream, and there are two new talents to invest Dragon Glyphs on,
and
;
New customization options and Drakewatcher Manuscripts are being added - Most of them for the Netherdrake and the Whimsydrake.
Useful Dragonriding Addons
Here we have a list of useful addons for Dragonriding:
AzerPUG's DragonRider
- Displays your Vigor bar on the screen even when not actively mounted on a Dragonriding mount.
HandyNotes Dragon Glyphs
- Marks locations of all Dragon Glyphs on your minimap, removing them once that glyph is obtained. Requires the
HandyNotes
addon to work.
Learning your Dragonriding Mounts
Players will receive their Dragonriding mounts from completing main storyline quests in the Dragon Isles. There are seven Dragonriding mounts, and there are no differences between them besides appearance. Like most mounts, Dragonriding mounts are account-wide, and once learned alts on your character can immediately Dragonride in the Dragon Isles.
You currently can only use Dragonriding mounts in the Dragon Isles - Attempting to mount a Dragonriding mount outside the Dragon Isles will give you an error message.
The
复苏始祖幼龙
is the first Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
驭龙术
, part of the third chapter of the Waking Shores storyline.
The
载风迅疾幼龙
is the second Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
树影庇护所
, part of the fourth chapter of the Ohn'ahran Plains main storyline.
The
高地幼龙
is the third Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
呼叫蓝龙
, part of the fourth chapter of the Azure Span main storyline.
The
崖际荒狂幼龙
is the fourth Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
回到未来
, part of the third chapter of the Thaldraszus storyline.
The
盘曲蜿变幼龙
is the fifth Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
雪上加霜
, part of the fifth chapter of the Zaralek Cavern main storyline.
The
岩洞灵翼幼龙
is the sixth Dragonriding mount you can earn - This was originally offered in the Trading Post as the Traveler's Log reward for the month of July/2023, but it shall return to the Trading Post at some point in the future.
The
繁盛奇想幼龙
is the seventh and latest Dragonriding mount you'll earn, given as a reward for the quest
翡翠之邀
, part of the first chapter of the Emerald Dream main storyline.
Dragonriding Basics
This is some of the basics you need to know about Dragonriding. Most of these basic concepts will be taught to you during the Dragonriding introduction questline.
You can get into the air from the ground at any point by double pressing your jump button - This will count as a
冲天升腾
usage, using 1 Vigor and propelling you forward in the air.
Falling from a high location while mounted on a Dragonriding mount will cause it to extend its wings, propelling you forward and preventing fall damage.
There are physics involved into Dragonriding: You will gain more speed when propelling yourself downwards, and lose speed when moving upwards. Using Vigor abilities will help you gain momentum.
Propelling yourself downwards and then moving upwards evens out momentum and is a way to keep yourself in the air for longer.
If you spend too long in the air without attempting to gain momentum, your mount will lose speed and eventually run out of steam. When this happens, your mount will slowly land to the ground. Because of this, AFKing in the air while Dragonriding is not possible.
Dragonriding Abilities
When Dragonriding, your default ability bar will be replaced by a new ability bar that will contain your Dragonriding abilities (for players familiar with abilities that change your default bar such as
精神控制
, it uses the Possession Bar). There are 4 different Dragonriding abilities that you will learn while leveling with your character through the Dragon Isles. These abilities use Vigor and will help you stay up in the air for longer.
Dragonriding abilities will take the first 5 slots of your first ability bar by default. These can be adjusted.
DefaultKeybind
Ability
Vigor Cost
Description
1
向前突进
1
Flap forward, gaining a small burst of momentum.
2
冲天升腾
1
Flap upwards, gaining a small burst of momentum and altitude. Pressing the Jump key twice while grounded will automatically use Skyward Ascent.
3
回旋急冲
3
Spiral forward to cover a great distance, gaining a large burst of momentum. 30-second cooldown.
4
青铜时光之锁
0
Mark a waypoint of your current position for 3 minutes. Once you have a waypoint created, this spell turns into
青铜回溯
, which can be used to return you to that waypoint. You cannot create a waypoint while flying, but you can return to that waypoint while in the air. 3-minute cooldown.
5
空中急停
0
Flap back, reducing forward moment.
Dragonriding Vigor System
Dragonriding abilities use Vigor, a new resource bar that's shown at the bottom of your screen whenever you're mounted on a Dragonriding mount. Some information about the Vigor system:
All players start with 3 Vigor. With Dragonriding talents, you are able to increase your maximum amount of Vigor to 6.
When grounded, you generate 1 Vigor every 30 seconds, even when not mounted on a Dragonriding mount. With Dragonriding talents, you are able to speed up your Vigor regeneration when grounded.
You do not regenerate Vigor when flying with your Dragonriding mount, unless...
When dragonriding at high speeds, you will start emitting blue particle effects demonstrating how fast you're going, and gain the
碧空热血
effect, which grants you 1 Vigor every 15 seconds while maintaining high speed. You will lose this effect once you lose enough momentum. With Dragonriding talents, you are able to speed up your Vigor regeneration when under the effects of
碧空热血
.
In addition to this, you can earn 1 Vigor every 30 seconds while gliding close to the ground, if you have the Dragonriding talent
掠地滑翔
.
With full Dragonriding talents, you'll have a maximum of 6 Vigor at your disposal.
Dragonriding Flying Speed
You are able to tell how fast you're flying with Dragonriding by paying attention to the speed particles around you and your dragon as you dragonride. Although the maximum speed Dragonriding can reach is 830%, it is actually very difficult to maintain maximum speed for very long, but even medium speeds are already well beyond that of normal flying.
No Particles
is the slowest flying speed, you will have no particles around your character and this signifies you're losing momentum. Usually you can regain speed on this mode if you fly downwards.
Wind Effects (White Particles)
is a medium flying speed, a little faster than the usual Epic Flying speed. If you fly at least a bit downwards while you have white particles around you, you will gain speed.
Blue Particles
is a fast flying speed and when you start gaining the effects of
碧空热血
. You usually get to the blue particles stage by using a Dragonriding ability such as
向前突进
, but you can get to this effect on your own by gaining enough momentum while flying downwards. This is the mode you want to be in when covering long distances. Initially, you will not be able to stay with blue particles for very long, but with talents increasing your Vigor generation, you are able to maintain this mode for a pretty long time.
There is an additional speed increase during the Blue Particle effect, when
your camera starts zooming away from your character
. This is your character nearing maximum Dragonriding speed and it is very hard to maintain this mode for long, usually only doable during Dragonriding races (where you get plenty of Vigor regeneration orbs and speed boosts) or when depleting your entire Vigor bar at once.
No particles, white particles and blue particles.
Motion Sickness Options
With the way Dragonriding works, some players might experience some level of motion sickness due to the perceived amount of camera movement. While there are currently no options to make camera movement static when flying, there are some options to help with motion sickness in general, with things such as forcing your character to be centered on your screen while Dragonriding and reducing Camera motion.
You can find these options under
Accessibility > General
, or simply type out "Motion Sickness" on the Options search menu.
Winds of the Isles and Wind Gales
At certain locations of the Dragon Isles, specifically places with a lot of elevation, you might come across an upwards wind gale. These are called Winds of the Isles, and stepping on them will launch you upwards.
Upgrading Your Dragon - Dragonriding Talents
Initial Dragonriding leaves the player wanting more - Not enough Vigor regeneration or even not enough Vigor, leading you to not stay in the air for very long. This is not the full Dragonriding experience, though. Dragonriding has a talent system of its own, focusing on Vigor regeneration and useful buffs while Dragonriding! You can check what all Dragonriding talents do on our Dragonriding talent guide:
Dragonriding Talents in Dragonflight - List of Talents, Suggested Talent Order
Dragon Glyphs
In order to learn Dragonriding talents, you must earn Dragon Glyphs. There are 48 Dragon Glyphs scattered around the Dragon Isles, and you must collect them by flying to their locations and passing through them to earn talent points for Dragonriding talents. Some of them are pretty well hidden or require a skillful amount of climbing with Dragonriding to get! We also have a guide with all Dragon Glyph locations in Dragonflight:
Dragon Glyphs in Dragonflight - List of Locations
Dragonriding FAQ
Here are some of the more common questions regarding Dragonriding for newcomers.
Will I take fall damage if I lose all momentum while flying in the air?
No! If you run out of momentum, your mount will slowly fall to the ground, but that will deal no fall damage to you. As a matter of fact, as soon as you fall off of a high location while Dragonriding, your mount will open its wings and start gliding. The only way to take fall damage while Dragonriding is if you dismount while in the air.
What is the best way to preserve momentum while flying?
As long as you are at least flying a little bit downwards, you will be able to maintain or even gain speed. A good way to preserve momentum for longer is to fly downwards to gain some speed, then shoot upwards again and once you're nearing the apex of that speed momentum, you aim downwards again to gain some more speed. Be mindful that you cannot stay in the air forever like this.
Do I regenerate Vigor while unmounted?
Yes, you continue to regenerate Vigor even when not actively using a Dragonriding mount. The addon
AzerPUG's DragonRider
allows you to see your Vigor bar even when unmounted, so you can keep track of how much Vigor you have at all times.

So happy to find a guide on here for this! I've been staying off PTR/Beta so I can go into it with just the vaguest of ideas. But, I've heard so much about dragonriding, wanted to read up a bit on it for understanding.
Thanks for putting this together - bookmarked & favorited!
One bit of feedback - a broken link (Maybe the content hasn't been added yet? ) - The additional guide listed (Dragonriding Talents in Dragonflight - List of Talents, Suggested Talent Order returns to Expansion Content list of guides.
The other link to dragon glyphs is returning that page, and about to read it as well.
Thanks so much!

AzerPUG's DragonRiding, it ALSO shows the Dragon Glyphs on the map, so you do not need both, you just need the AzerPUG's one!

In beta, I've been able to flight as far and long as I want. Going up with the
冲天升腾
moving the camera also up, and flying down with a very slow inclination to mantain the momentum. So, it's possible. Maybe, you can't rush a point directly without lose some points, but it's possible to keep flying as you want.

I could use some help here..how do you fly down? I use a laptop mouse and can't figure it out. If I can't figure it out I can't play!

Just wanted to correct something:
The is available in the third chapter of the Ohn'ahran Plains main storyline.
The
崖际荒狂幼龙
is available in the second (of three) chapter of the Thaldraszus main storyline.

It doesn't seem to have been mentioned already (or I can't read) that if the glyphs are unlocked on one character, they are available to your alts on the same account.

Great guide and very useful for newbies learning to fly. The only critic I have of the system is that you lose your altitude. If they removed that part and let you afk in mid air like the old mounts. I would never go back to old mount system again. Everything else can stay the same.

Tip for new bloods:
Prioritize getting all the glyphs as soon as possible. The difference between maxed out dragonriding and the crappy thing you get at the start is astronomical.

One thing worth mentioning is that the Dragonriding system is
not based on "momentum"
, as many promo materials and guides claim. There is absolutely zero kinetic physics involved. There is only a "flight speed" at which you fly forward, like an invisible stacking buff, which you can gain by flying at a down angle or by using skills, or lose by flying, well, not down - but you're absolutely free to make a u-turn at top speed and you'll retain all of it. Keep that in mind when instinctively making long, smooth curves, like an airplane would. None of that matters in Dragonriding: what matters is whether you fly down or up, and that's it.

To enable flying as a whelp with a friend, speak to one of the Dragonriding Trainers (such as Lithragosa in Valdrakken at
/way 27.0, 47.4).
莉兹拉苟萨
, Use the chat bubble for "I heard something about helping my fellow adventurers?" and then the follow up "Please enable passengers for me." Once you've done that, you will have enabled a mount-up arrow over them that will appear while riding a flying dragon mount. Click to become a whelp! Note that you'll need to talk to the trainer on each alt you want to be able to use this functionality.

I'm not sure where to post this. I haven't gotten started in Dragonflight. Is dragon flying going to be the only flying in this expansion? Or are going to be able to use our other mounts? My main is a druid so I don't really use mounts. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, I didn't really look very hard for info.

Your low level alts can fly on dragons before they can fly regular mounts. Dragon Riding is an inherent skill that does not require training. However, Dragon Riding only works in the Dragon Isles so you'll have to hitch a ride there first.
Low level characters cannot interact with the Dragon Riding Trainers. But don't worry, they can still access the Skills and Unlocks menu by clicking on the dragon icon on the minimap. Your skills are only limited by what your high level characters have already unlocked.
So login to your low level alt, load up your favorite dragon, learn those riding skills, and take off for a wild flight through the Dragon Isles. But when you get one shot by a killer duck, don't blame me.

I have been trying for at least 20 hours in total and can't fly through the rings. People tell me to press both mouse buttons, but that doesn't help. Everything on the screens whirls around and I feel sick, despite activating the motion sickness settings. I can't see where I am going, can't steer, have no idea what is happening and crash. My reflexes are slow, I need time to look around and work out what needs doing. This is impossible when dragonriding. I also need to use the keyboard to steer because I never managed to do it with the mouse, and keyboard steering doesn't work with dragonriding. I have had to abandon the lizard folk I made, because I cannot get out of the starting zone. I've had to move my other characters back to old zones, because I cannot function in the dragon place. This means I wasted the huge amount of money I paid to get Dragonflight, because I am so disadvantaged there.
Please, don't reply with toxic comments about how do I manage elsewhere. I don't do dungeons and raids in groups, because I know I am slower than everyone else and get lost in the maze. I just potter along alone, doing whatever I can do solo. I do not impact on other people's play and would love just to have the chance to get some value out of the subscription and expansion fees by not being locked out of even more content than so far.

Hi,
do we know if there are any tangible differences between the drakes in terms of speed, maneuverability etc? Or is it all purely a cosmetic difference?

I can't find any concrete information ANYWHERE on the multiplayer racing rallies. There's dragon customizations tied to racing I don't have and I already have the all gold achievements so I assume they must come from this.

Which is better for flying up, three of
冲天升腾
(1 vigor) or
回旋急冲
(3 vigor)?
Even though I've had both for a while, I still can't tell. And I always have trouble trying to gain much altitude.

I came across a display—somewhere, somehow—that displayed the number of dragon glyphs in each zone and how many in each zone the character had acquired. Now I can't remember how to bring it up. Does anyone know how this is done? It did not involve an add-on, I'm sure.
评论来自
Gormie
Has anyone figured out an add-on or other sort of thing that would allow someone to easily figure out which handful of remaining glyphs they have missed?
I'm 8 short, I didn't pay enough attention early on in my levelling, so IDK which ones I've hit and missed. I suppose I could just spend an hour and fly around and check all the waypoints, but I'd really rather find a string like the things you can get to check quests, or an add-on or something.
Any ideas?

When you mount your dragonriding mount, your user interface should look like this:
Action Bar
If you miss some of these, you can drag and drop them to the action bar like this:
Type /script PickupSpell(374990, "BOOKTYPE_SPELL" ); and you get
青铜时光之锁
under your cursor. Drag it to button 4.
Type /script PickupSpell(361584, "BOOKTYPE_SPELL" ); and you get
回旋急冲
under your cursor. Drag it to button 3.
Type /script PickupSpell(372610, "BOOKTYPE_SPELL" ); and you get
冲天升腾
under your cursor. Drag it to button 2.
Type /script PickupSpell(372608, "BOOKTYPE_SPELL" ); and you get
向前突进
under your cursor. Drag it to button 1.

Dragonriding is best thing added to the game....now if there could be races in older content....

TIP: You can ascend higher with 1 usage of
Skyward Ascent
versus 2-3 Skyward Ascent. All you need to do is point yourself (not the camera) upward when you use the ability. You also gain
Thrill of the Skies
a lot sooner too.
I tested this in Valdrakken using the Seat of the Aspects tower as a measurement. By doing it this way, I can reach the top from the base with 2 vigor remaining. Doing it pointing at the horizon takes more than 6 vigor to reach the top.

This feature made me not get Dragonflight, and ultimately unsub after nearly 15 years.
I can't be convinced that it isn't just tedious and irritating. I don't care how many people are enjoying it or just say they are, it's so repulsive an idea to me.
Between the last two expansions of borrowed power grinds and now this, I really do wish the developers would grow up and stop introducing cheap gimmicks.

Once you have enough glyph points, you can get the talent at bottom that lets you gain vigor every 10-15 secs and cancel the talent at top that lets you gain vigor every 20-25 secs. You do not need to have both. Use the extra points however you want :)

Tried it. Fell into the ravine nearby and couldn't get out.
Every time I gained ground and tried to fly down to gain momentum, I ended up losing ground.
I had to hearth out of there.
Turned around, left the Dragon Isles forever. It can remain unexplored. I'll wait until the next expansion.

We can now dragonride in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, etc. However, even with toggling the DF drakes to not be "favorite" mounts, using the randomizer only selects these drakes.
I definitely want the option to dragonride or not, as a mount farmer. With almost 500 mounts, I like to mix it up. Does anyone have a tip for how to turn Dragon Riding on or off?
