This guide to leveling the Mage in Dragonflight will provide a basic look at leveling your Mage in Dragonflight, including reviews and ratings of the dominant specializations, links to leveling talent builds, tips for best and fastest leveling, gear, leveling professions, and links to class guides you'll need to make the best decisions going forward.
We will also include Pre-Patch information for the period leading up to November 28th, 2022, when Dragonflight launches and you'll move your leveling to the Dragon Isles.
Leveling Mages in Dragonflight
Mages are a popular class in World of Warcraft. With high utility and high DPS, they're in demand for raid teams and dungeon groups, as well as being a great solo class with surprisingly high survivability. Their ability to teleport and port others to all corners of the world make them one of the most globally mobile classes in the game.
In Dragonflights Pre-Patch, the Mage class was opened to all races except Dracthyr. It was already available for most, but was added to Tauren and Highmountain Tauren, which only were admitted to mage school after 18 years of waiting for admission.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Mage Leveling in Dragonflight
Mages have one Class tree that applies to all Mages, and three Specialization trees for Arcane, Fire, and Frost. They are all caster DPS classes, with the major difference being which class of magic they choose to wield.
All Mages share tools that make them far less of the "glass cannons" they used to be in expansions past. They are surprisingly tough and survivable, with aggro dumps like
强化隐形术
, distraction tools like
镜像
, and shields, invisibility, and more. They do lack passive damage reduction and self-healing.

Mage Leveling Specs in Dragonflight
While you can level successfully as any class, some talent builds are more friendly to leveling than others. If you're planning to level in a group, what talent spec you pick will matter less, as there are more players to fill in for weaknesses. These recommendations are our class writers' picks for most efficient leveling builds in all types of play.
Best Leveling Spec for Mages
Frost
remains the top pick for many leveling, although
Arcane
is also a strong leveling spec. Frost's advantages are the wide variety of abilities that slow or control mobs, making it the most survivable build of the three. It's also the least complicated spec to run, making it popular with those new to the class.
Our class writers have put together comprehensive leveling guides that cover viability, tips, builds, leveling rotation, cooldowns, and leveling consumables. A brief summary of each follows:
Leveling Arcane Mages
For most WoW expansions, Arcane was the last picked for leveling since it was so mana hungry, but improvements to overall damage and mana management has made this far more viable for leveling. It has the advantage of having a simpler rotations without as many procs to handle as Fire, which makes it surprisingly beginner-friendly. The one problem with Arcane is that some of its best AoE abilities require you to get a little too close to some mobs, which can encourage some bad habits.

Leveling Fire Mages
Fire is not the best choice for leveling, particularly if you're planning to solo. High burst combined with long cooldowns can easily get you into situations where you have to use your much-vaunted escape plans to get out. While there are more tools in the Fire Mage's arsenal to help with dealing with overpulls and unexpected aggro, it's still the least amenable to solo questing out of the three mage builds. Go with a friend. (This said, yes, I solo a fire mage. It's not for the faint of heart).

Leveling Frost Mages
Frost's combination of crowd control and high survivability has made this a perennial favorite for mage leveling. It's a less complicated spec to run, not relying on building Arcane Charges or Hot Streak procs, making it more attractive to those new to the class. The key to Frost Mage leveling is keeping the multi-target fun going by pulling multiple targets, rooting or slowing them, and hammering them down with powerful frost AoE spells.

Best Leveling Gear for Mages in Dragonflight
Mages can equip the following gear:
Armor Type:
Cloth
Usable Weapons:
Daggers, One-Handed Swords, Staves, Wands, Offhands
Mages' weapons are really stat sticks; you don't actually use them to strike anything, except at the very lowest levels as a desperation move (or occasional amusement). Weapon DPS does not matter one tiny bit, since it contributes nothing to your overall damage. You are looking only for the main stats and secondary stats, nothing more. Daggers and Swords frequently do not have Intellect, so look at them carefully before equipping. Staves generally do, but some are specced for melee combat, so don't automatically choose a Staff without looking first. Enchants that only proc on melee hits are useless to you. While Wands can be semi-useful at the very lowest levels (below level 25 or so) for shooting enemies, it's only a desperation move that you rarely need to resort to anymore. Pick weapons only for stats, period.
Mages can use an Offhand for extra stats with a one-handed weapons, but cannot use Shields.
Much of the time while you're leveling, you'll be gathering and upgrading gear as you go. You usually do this with a mix of quest drops, dungeon drops, and profession crafted gear.
Gear iLevels for Dragonflight
In Dragonflight, your first gear from quests will be Uncommon items between iLevels 202 and 226. This means if you have geared up using catch-up mechanics from Pre-Patch and/or through raid and Mythic+ in Shadowlands, it might be several levels before you start replacing gear. For example, at level 65, you can get Uncommon quest items, drops, and quality crafted gear at around iLevel 289; this should give you an idea of the approximate level range at which you'll replace gear. All quest and dropped gear items can also upgrade randomly to either Rare or Epic quality, and some crafted gear can be created with higher quality as well.
Although you can start leveling in Dragonflight with an iLevel as low as 150, we recommend a minimum iLevel of 180, which is realistic and easy to get with little to no extra effort.
You can get into a good iLevel range with a combination of dropped gear in 10-60 zones, heirlooms, and crafted gear from the Auction House. You will want a higher iLevel if you wish to start early with dungeon leveling.
Best Leveling Professions for Mages in Dragonflight
Most veteran players will have established professions and will wish to level these in Dragonflight. However, bear in mind that while professions are much deeper and richer in Dragonflight than they've been in past expansions, they are also more complicated, requiring a greater investment in time and effort to develop.
Players can have a maximum of two professions. All players can pick up the secondary skills
烹饪
and
钓鱼
.
First Aid
was removed as a separate skill in Battle for Azeroth and is now part of the
裁缝
profession.
For manufacturing professions, Mages often choose
裁缝
to make armor for themselves and to sell through the Auction House and Crafting Orders. This is commonly paired with
附魔
, rather than a gathering skill, since you can disenchant unwanted Tailored items for materials. Again, it's probably best to concentrate on leveling these once you've reached maximum level.
For players who don't have professions, we strongly recommend picking up two Gathering professions. At higher levels of Knowledge and Specializations in Dragonflight, you will also gain benefits.
Both
采矿
and
草药学
still provide small amounts of experience for gathering nodes.
剥皮
- with 20 points in
Harvesting
specialization, you get a bonus for your knowledge of anatomy to increase your damage against beasts and dragonkin while outdoors in the Dragon Isles.
草药学
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Windswept, Frigid, Titan-Touched, and Decayed), which allows you to channel energy into elementally-charged herbs for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental herb types to get full effects.
采矿
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Molten, Hardened, Titan-Touched, and Primal), which allows you to channel energy into elemental deposits for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental mine types to get full effects.
