Devastation Evoker is very simple on the surface but has an amazing amount of depth with intersecting interactions and abilities that change depending on how you use them or how long you empower them. This guide was written for newcomers and starts off with the basics, but many advanced tips are included at the end to help you master the spec once you understand the basics. I recommend revisiting the guide often, as more tips will be added over time. Regardless of if Evoker is your primary focus or an alt, I hope you enjoy Devastation as much as I do!
Devastation Evoker Rotations in Dragonflight
In the simplest terms, Devastation Evoker primarily deals damage by applying

to deal damage over time while spending

Devastation Evoker Rotation Basics
Devastation Evoker has one main build with some minor changes depending on how many targets you can reliably hit. Due to how similar talents are for Raid and Mythic+, Devastation is able to achieve a healthy balance of Single Target, Cleave, and AoE simultaneously.

is the main cooldown for Devastation.

Trinket usage
Devastation has long cooldowns, so having two on-use trinkets can be worthwhile. Try not to waste time in

How to handle Priority Targets
Devastation excels at target swapping and handling priority targets for many reasons, and a successful Evoker will play to this strength. I won't list every reason, but the key factors are 2 target cleave with built-in funnel via
能量闪烁
, increased damage to fresh targets with
精通:巨人杀手
, and strong cleave without losing out on priority damage. For extremely important targets, we also have
狂龙之怒
which can be used with full

stacks to to burst AoE while also allowing for full

benefit regardless of the target's health. Dealing good damage to new targets is simple, swap to them early and often.
In a situation where you know targets are coming, you can prime your
狂龙之怒
by stacking

buff at the ready. Using these cooldowns in quick succession is an incredible amount of AoE burst that will also all affect the secondary target (the Boss) so long as targets are near one another. Keep in mind that

Shattering Star
and Distance

is instant cast and has a travel time. This spell increases the damage the target takes once it makes impact, and the debuff for the damage increase begins when the spell hits the target. Instant cast spells trigger a Global Cooldown, which means that they lock you out of casting for a short time after they are cast. This means that the window for the
碎裂星辰
debuff that increases damage can be increased by making the spell travel further, since you recover from the Global Cooldown while the spell is traveling to the target. For this reason, it is a slight gain to cast
碎裂星辰
from max range (25 yards) whenever possible.

gives us

, so do not cast it if you are capped.
When it comes to queueing spells into
碎裂星辰
, the damage increase from the debuff is calculated for other spells
on cast
which means
they will only benefit if the cast took place after the

debuff was applied.
This means that as long as the cast was finished while the debuff was on the target, it will have increased damage, even if it hits after the debuff expires. Note that damage over time from spells like

affects the damage that happens instantly when you empower the spell (the upfront damage) and dynamically scales the damage over time. Generally in single target you want to use

As mentioned before, empowering

moves damage from the debuff it applies into the initial hit of upfront damage. For each level it is empowered, 3 ticks worth of extra damage is moved.

also increases in target count per level. Damage over time from
火焰吐息
scales dynamically with

, which means that the damage goes down as the target's health percent lowers. When playing

this can be counteracted in pulls where there are over 20 targets, since the upfront damage of
火焰吐息
is hard capped after 20, where-as the dot scales linearly beyond 20.
With square root scaling, initial damage and the damage over time (up to 20 targets) on
火焰吐息
for secondary targets will scale by a factor of 1/sqrt(target#) for every target hit above 5. This means above 5 targets, you'll do less damage to each individual mob, but overall you'll be doing more damage with additional targets with diminished returns.
If an AoE Spell that has sqrt scaling after 1 target and does 100 damage:
Against 1 secondary target, it will deal 100 damage to each secondary target. 100 damage.
Against 2 secondary targets, it will deal 70.7 damage to each secondary target, 141 damage.
Against 3 secondary targets, it will deal 57.7 damage to each secondary target, 173 damage.
Against 4 secondary targets, it will deal 50 damage to each secondary target, 200 damage.

Priming your AoE
Devastation is very good at setting up AoE damage ahead of time.

makes it always better to burst high health targets. This means there is a heavy incentive to use time time before fresh targets are available to "prime" your AoE. Here are some tips on how to do this:

With the new 4-set bonus Emerald Trance, should Disintegrate be prioritized over Eternity Surge? Both in-game and in sims, Disintegrate deals more damage per cast than Eternity Surge does. During Emerald Trance after Dragonrage, you have so many Essence Bursts you end up wasting them by having to cast Eternity Surge.
