This guide to leveling the Death Knight in Dragonflight will provide a basic look at leveling your Death Knight in Dragonflight, including reviews and ratings of the dominant specializations, links to leveling talent builds, tips for best and fastest leveling, gear, leveling professions, and links to class guides you'll need to make the best decisions going forward.
We will also include Pre-Patch information for the period leading up to November 28th, 2022, when Dragonflight launches and you'll move your leveling to the Dragon Isles.
Leveling Death Knights in Dragonflight
Death Knights are a Hero class, meaning that they start out with some advantages over other classes. Instead of beginning at level 1, Death Knights begin at level 8 and must start in their own dedicated leveling zone,
阿彻鲁斯:黑锋要塞
. Allied Races who become Death Knights also start in Acherus, but begin at level 10 instead of level 8.
Once Death Knights finish their leveling zone and leave for the wider world, they emerge with a full set of good quality Rare gear and specific knowledge of how to play their class.
Historical Note: When Death Knights were first introduced in Wrath of the Lich King, you could only have one Death Knight per server and you must have a character on that server who is at least level 55. These restrictions were removed in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor respectively.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Death Knight Leveling in Dragonflight
Death Knights have one Class tree that applies to all Death Knights, and three Specialization trees for Blood, Frost, and Unholy. All three can do impressive damage, even though Blood is a tank spec rather than a DPS spec.
In general, Death Knights are fairly easy to level, since their wide variety of abilities gives them good to excellent survivability with very little downtime if managed correctly. All Death Knight specs share a problem with low mobility.

Death Knight Leveling Specs in Dragonflight
While you can level successfully as any class, some talent builds are more friendly to leveling than others. If you're planning to level in a group, what talent spec you pick will matter less, as there are more players to fill in for weaknesses. These recommendations are our class writers' picks for most efficient leveling builds in all types of play.
Best Leveling Spec for Death Knights
Blood
is the most popular spec for leveling. Unlike many tank classes, Blood has very good damage output, but compared with other Death Knight builds, it is considerably tougher with a wider range of damage mitigation and self-heals. It's also excellent for dungeon leveling, since you'll rarely have to wait long in a dungeon queue as a tank.
Frost and Unholy share similar strengths and weaknesses, and as such, there isn't a clear ranking on which takes second or third in terms of leveling prowess. Either is a fine choice.
Our class writers have put together comprehensive leveling guides that cover viability, tips, builds, leveling rotation, cooldowns, and leveling consumables. A brief summary of each follows:
Leveling Blood Death Knights
With high survivability, good self-heals connected to primary damage-dealing abilities, and a non-target-called AoE spell
血液沸腾
, Blood is the undisputed ruler of Death Knight leveling. By switching between open-world and dungeon leveling, Blood DKs are able to pull huge and come out on top. The Blood leveling spec picks up a few things to help with mobility and to group up mobs for more efficient AoE pulling. It's also one of the easiest tank specs to level solo.

Leveling Frost Death Knights
Frost Death Knights excel at rounding up large groups of mobs, using their powerful cleave abilities to take out groups, and then healing themselves with their accumulated
黑暗援助
. They are a little less popular for leveling given that Blood Knights have the edge in survivability, but they are amazing fun. Leveling talents emphasize improving both mobitility and survivability.

Leveling Unholy Death Knights
In terms of abilities and survivability, leveling Unholy Death Knights is quite similar to both the bonuses and challenges of leveling a Frost Death Knight. Again, leveling talents support improved mobility and survivability to make up for shortcomings in those areas.

Best Leveling Talent Builds for Death Knights in Dragonflight
If you know which Death Knight spec you want, but just want to get straight into making your leveling build, look no further. You can find the direct links to the Best Leveling Talent Builds for Blood, Frost, and Unholy Death Knights here.
How to Export and Import Talent Builds
To
export
a build from Wowhead, go to the provided tree and click
Export Talents
in the upper right corner of the talent build. This will copy the appropriate string to your clipboard. If you want to save that talent string to import later, you can copy it to a text editor such as Windows Notepad or Apple's TextEdit.
To
import
a build into your character, open your character's Specialization and Talents window (N). In the bottom left corner over the tabs, select the dropdown and select
Import
. (Starter Build is provided for you by Blizzard, but it's not optimized for a particular activity).
Copy that long string from your Export in the Import Text window, name your loadout, and click save. (A loadout is a set of pre-selected abilities where you can save a set of abilities and talents. This lets you switch specs on the fly for different roles or different purposes, such as raiding, dungeons, or even low-level transmog farming. It's up to you!).
As a bonus, creating loadouts also saves any Action Bar setups you have for that spec, so you can set it up the way you like and return to that configuration when you switch specs.

Best Leveling Gear for Death Knights in Dragonflight
Death Knights can equip the following gear:
Armor Type:
Plate
Usable Weapons:
Axes, Maces, Swords, Polearms
Death Knights can either use two-handed weapons or dual wield one-handed weapons. They do not use Shields or other offhands. Death Knights have an ability to Runeforge their weapons, which gives them extra powers, and one advantage of Dual Wielding is that you can have different Runeforges on both weapons. You cannot have a Runeforge and an Enchant on the same weapon, but most Runeforges are more powerful that Enchants anyway.
Much of the time while you're leveling, you'll be gathering and upgrading gear as you go. You usually do this with a mix of quest drops, dungeon drops, and profession crafted gear.
Gear iLevels for Dragonflight
In Dragonflight, your first gear from quests will be Uncommon items between iLevels 202 and 226. This means if you have geared up using catch-up mechanics from Pre-Patch and/or through raid and Mythic+ in Shadowlands, it might be several levels before you start replacing gear. For example, at level 65, you can get Uncommon quest items, drops, and quality crafted gear at around iLevel 289; this should give you an idea of the approximate level range at which you'll replace gear. All quest and dropped gear items can also upgrade randomly to either Rare or Epic quality, and some crafted gear can be created with higher quality as well.
Although you can start leveling in Dragonflight with an iLevel as low as 150, we recommend a
minimum
iLevel of 180, which is realistic and easy to get with little to no extra effort.
You can get into a good iLevel range with a combination of dropped gear in 10-60 zones, heirlooms, and crafted gear from the Auction House. You will want a higher iLevel if you wish to start early with dungeon leveling.
Best Leveling Professions for Death Knights in Dragonflight
Most veteran players will have established professions and will wish to level these in Dragonflight. However, bear in mind that while professions are much deeper and richer in Dragonflight than they've been in past expansions, they are also more complicated, requiring a greater investment in time and effort to develop.
Players can have a maximum of two professions. All players can pick up the secondary skills
烹饪
and
钓鱼
.
First Aid
was removed as a separate skill in Battle for Azeroth and is now part of the
裁缝
profession.
For manufacturing professions, Death Knights often choose
锻造
to make armor and weapons for themselves and to sell through the Auction House and Crafting Orders. This is commonly paired with
采矿
. Again, it's probably best to concentrate on leveling these once you've reached maximum level.
For players who don't have professions, we strongly recommend picking up two Gathering professions. At higher levels of Knowledge and Specializations in Dragonflight, you will also gain benefits.
Both
采矿
and
草药学
still provide small amounts of experience for gathering nodes.
剥皮
- with 20 points in
Harvesting
specialization, you get a bonus for your knowledge of anatomy to increase your damage against beasts and dragonkin while outdoors in the Dragon Isles.
草药学
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Windswept, Frigid, Titan-Touched, and Decayed), which allows you to channel energy into elementally-charged herbs for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental herb types to get full effects.
采矿
- When you learn the
Mastering the Elements
specialization, you learn to Overload Elemental herbs (Molten, Hardened, Titan-Touched, and Primal), which allows you to channel energy into elemental deposits for unique bonuses and effects. You must invest many points both into Mastering the Elements and into the four elemental mine types to get full effects.
