If it wasn't already difficult enough to win this...
I hope this counts retroactively otherwise some people will be left feeling ripped off.

I'm sure it will be applied retroactively as it requires that you complete the
Master Angler
quest and blizz tracks which quests you have completed. I would try to win this pre-wrath as there will probably be a surge of people trying to do this when the achievement hits.
EDIT: Ok, I guess they will scan for the trinket or pole...

Why would anyone have gotten rid of that pole anyway? It's still the ebst in the game so there's no reason to discard it...

Only 48 people a year win this its just luck lol, I won this weekend of 10/13/08 which was pretty awesome. There were like 5 nodes that spawn right in front of me or in the exact same spot that I was fishing in it happen like 5 times at lease. Once you are done fishing the node the node respawns automatically somewhere else anywhere in the contests area last week I was doing this at the tip of this land mass was bout 5-6 nodes. Oh yeah this is also part of the
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?achievement=1516
achievement which gives you the Title Reward: Salty!

i have both of these. i won in back to back weeks :-)
i wish they had an achievement for that!
this was before the buffed fishing and guaranteed you got a fish every catch.. so it was more luck based on actually getting a bite every time you cast out your line.
now your bobber just has to bounce faster than the next guy's.

I am hated with booty bay and the goblins because i wanted to get the pirate rank n all, but now i wan't to be in the fishing contest.
my question is: Is this possible with hated reputation? : (
Edit: followup question: If not, is there a way to regain my reputation with booty bay?

I finally won the STV contest, and I thank Arthas for it. The sunday after WotLK came out, there was about a half dozen or so people in STV instead of 30+.
Here's a tip for all you fledgling master anglers: Start up in the northernmost part of STV and work your way down; most people hang out in the south/middle, so you'll get almost every pool to yourself. Get a few elixirs of water walking from the old man barlow dailies, since the part where you have to cross water to go further south has about 4 pools you can fish from if you stand in the middle of the water. Set your hearth in BB, obviously. As long as you stay along the coast (why wouldn't you?), you'll never aggro anything you don't run directly over.

Please, remove this dredded acheivment.
I have done all except for this and 'The one that didn't get away' which I am doing at this very moment. my reasons are because
1. I go to church on most sundays
2. This competition is luck based, only a small proportion of time is spent into this
3. Only 52 winners a year
4. Other than alliance ganking you when you're fishing (Could of won one competition when there was only 2 horde including me, I had 39 fish then the guy won, I had 1 left to go and I was ganked 2 times, meaning two long corpse runs and I could fo won within that)
5. And since acheivments people are doing it not even for this title, but for 10 acheivment points !
6. Remove it :[ I want to show my dedication and how bored I was to fish non-stop for hours on end :) This contest is silly, even if it is remove from the list I am still participating it, for the Angler Boots and ofcourse the cool trinket which turns you into a fish.

Why would Blizz remove it as an achievement just because you can get ganked while trying to do it?
They did not force you to play on a PvP server, it was your choice, live with it, or move to a normal server. If they should remove all the achievements where you might get ganked while trying to do it, there wouldn't be many left.
The fact that this achievement requires some luck, doesn't set it appart from some of the exploration achievements where you have to kill rare spawns, and as with fishing RL it takes skill, but nothing beat good old fashioned blind luck...
Yes I have done it, not for the achievement, but to get the pole, no I didn't do it on a PvP server. I got it on my second try, as I said all it takes some good old fashioned luck, but planning helps too. There are some nice guides out there, just remember that a lot of people read them, so the spots the most read ones tells you gives you the best chance, might because of that be far from the best places to actually go. Get help from other players if that will give you an edge, though it is not really something you need on a normal server.
Good luck

I think there should be at least a 2nd and 3rd place finisher just to get the achievement but not the pole or trinket. There are too many people on a realm and not enough time in the year to win this.

I don't believe everything should be nerfed to EZmode, but I don't believe this achievement is consistent with the rest of the system. Clearly most of these cater to completion-/collection-oriented players. Most (if not all) of the achievements (excluding feats of strength) are not one-shot and only require persistence and (sometimes) skill. While raid achievements and 80-heroic achievements are once-weekly and once-daily, respectively, these encounters can typically be reset. The Undying and The Immortal are exceptions to this, but requires more skill and gear than luck.
However, this is similar to a Feat of Strength as your chances of winning are only modestly better than getting Ashes of Al'ar. (Although this is really situational as it depends on the fervor of your world's fishing buffs.) While a winner is guaranteed (100% drop) every week, there are still only 52 chances in a year and many more than 25 can have a shot at it on any given Sunday, let alone multiple wins. (I don't think someone rolling on Al'ar when they already have it would be able to stay on the server very long after.) Your best bet would be to roll/transfer to a younger server or try a holiday, if it's really that important.
All told, I would perceive this to be an achievement if it wasn't pure luck. I would personally like to see this more attainable (given the other prerequisites for the title) for giving a title to the determined fishing gurus out there. Many would not bother with even fishing up a Weather-Beaten Journal...

I do like the challenge of it, but couldn't they at least make it so that there is a Horde winner and an Alliance winner? A time-limit award? (40 fish in x amount of time?). As some posters mentioned above, not everyone is able to make it on Sundays. To draw a comparison, to achieve the "Merrymaker" title, some parts such as
Crashin' & Thrashin'
, went beyond the day itself.
You have people trying to sabotage the event with 5-6 of their friends just to get twink gear, it's on a Sunday afternoon and is amazingly hard for people that have RL (or pretend to have one), people ganking you because it's Gankle-thorn, people stealing your fishin' spots....is blizzard trying to tell us not to fish, or are they asking us, "how bad ya want it?"
After all that, I'm still willing to sell my soul to become
SALTY OOGLEPANTS.
*editors note, since my original post there is now the Kalu'ak fishin' ma thingy, the Blizz gods have answered my thoughtless and self-fulfilling prayers.
**my hope spring eternal! Ihad changed my Ooglepants to a very, very populated server and didn't think i had a rat's chance. Well, it's a new year, 2013,and I just found out the title goes to 1st, 2nd or 3rd! Get out ma fishin' pole!

To remind every1 AGAIN. Achievements are MENT to be hard, and some parts near impossible. Yes i understand not every1 has time, some ppl cant fight off PvP factions, and even a few ppl are on UBER-High population areas. But THATS THE POINT. lol - if it was ment to be easy, every1 whould have done it already. Blizzard has made this for ppl who are willing to go Above and beyond what normal ppl can do, to get it.
Take the Baron's Mount in Strath. I farmed for 73 hours total - just to get it. Thats (in essence) what u gota remeber. I am sorry some are havin trouble (im still trying for this one) but in the end, when u have a chance and turn it in to reveal "WE HAVE A WINNER" and u see your name, THAT will make this aceivement that much more.
I wish all of you luck, and remember, if you QQ enough on the servers, they might just remove this from the Salty title pre-req ^_^

I got my salty title shortly after winning the contest, I recommend fishing on the east coast, on a populated server, it's much much easier than fishing on the overpopulated west coast.
I won it on my 4th try, it's not impossible but i recommend the Find fish ability, a must have, it is a lot easier to locate schools and calculate where to go next.
Of course its impossible to win without luck, preparation will only count for around 40% max absolute, it all depends on the amount of Tasty fish you catch as oppose to other fish, how many other people are fishing near you and the amount of ganking you'll get from hordies/allies but saying that, most people who want to waste their time taking away the threat of 1 more person will most likely not win it.
Most dedicated fishers will get it, achievement hunters will have a bit of a worse off time.

Got it today on my first attempt at it, here are some simple guidelines to follow to improve your chances at victory.
1) Have a DK within range of you at all times keeping you with Path of Frost in order to avoid opposing faction problems.
2) Have a paladin keep crusader on and look for spawns while you fish your current nodes.
3) If the other faction gives you problems, try to bring alot of friends to keep them off your back.
4) Fish fast, set a button you can easily spam to recast until you get it into the school.
5) Last but not least, if you don't have alot of the opposing faction ganking next to the questgiver, get a lock to come with 2 other people when you reach about 36 or so fish and have them summon you straight to the questgiver once you get your fish.
Having others grief your faction can sometimes lead to your benefit if they stay off of you and on others that are fishing, therefore it's not always best to have your friends KOS anything red, but remember, you must be alive to fish, if you die you've probably lost this time around. Good luck and happy hunting!

If you happen to try this on a pvp server,
better bring alot of friends with you.
Should be called: Master Ganker of Stranglethorn.
This contest doesnt have anything to do with fishing anymore, its about who brings the most friends and ganks/annoys the others the most so he wins.

I got this today, after failing last week. Like others have said it is an achievement that could drive one crazy. You got 40 fish, starting your heartstone to booty bay, and you're ganked. Seconds later someone turns it in and wins. Even your own faction may lower your chances of completing it. Of course they will fish "your" schools, but some will place their mammoth mount on your lure making it hard or impossible to see when you've caught a fish.
The main reason I won it was luck. I was not ganked once, even though there was a war going on all around me. I had 3 schools within 30 yards which I was allowed to fish empty. Of course it helps to have friends helping you, but it all comes down to finding those schools fast.
I agree with those saying this achievement isn't scaled right. There's too many people going for it, and not enough chances of winning it. Why can't it be 3-4 times a week? or even every day?
Good luck to you all, fellow fishermen

I won this yesterday on Azjol – Nerub server.. It took me 4 - 6 weeks of trying and I was very very lucky to win it.
I’ve read all the posts months ago and tried to put the comments to good use – most of the comments are a must if your gonna win.. BUT.. Areas where to fish to win will vary from one server to another… East coast on Azjol every Sunday is packed and I didn’t stand a chance, so my advice is scout out the areas on your server and find what works..
Thx to Brianwasher, Toxorc, Curtian and Kholing for portaling me all over the coastline, but sadly that trick didn’t work either!

Yeah, this is the only achievement I'm missing for the title. Every week I start at the top, off Yojamba Isle, several nodes pop up right at the start, usually there are only a couple of people there, i can get 15 fast, but as the crowd grows and people fishing into your node, you have to move on, moving south, you find them, but everyone is fishing from each others nodes. Really today someone got it in 11mins. And my hubby is a DK and he will path up and down helping me and I still have yet to achieve this.
I TOTALLY understand that the point of some achievements is the difficultness of them, but really when only in theory, that is if there are 52 unique toons that win this, you'll only have 52 every year that get this title. But we all know and I've seen that the same person can win week after week. :( At least i have hope to get my turtle mount before getting this done.
Im not into making everything "fair" but this one is kinda silly. Blizzard just please remove it from the "Salty" title achievement.

Dr. Stranglethorn, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Extravaganza.
The Reason Behind the Madness:
As un-fishermanly to do as it is, to win the contest you have to save all your attempts and energy for one go with all your guns blazing and zerg STV with a dozen or so of your closest friends. I have been trying alone off and on for years (as you can see in a frustrated comment below), and only the times that I helped someone else win or I organized my own did I participate in a victory. As rough as this achievement is to obtain, you can't just keep trying and hope to have luck favor you eventually. You can only do so much to improve your odds as an individual, so
the only way you can try harder and significantly improve your odds is to decrease the odds of everyone else
. AKA, kill them and befoul their waters with giant mammoths.
You Require Additional Pylons! (AKA Preparation):
Go to the contest alone a couple times to test the water (haha, a pun!) and find out where it's crowded, where it isn't, where the ganking takes place, and develop strategies to fish fastest. Don't even fish, just go up and down the coasts observing everyone else. Squirrel this information away and formulate a basic strategy for your real attempt. Any area you can have your private army pull a Sparta to isolate you with plenty of pools is ideal, like Yojimba Island or parts of the Eastern beach, but traffic by area will vary by server.
Then, organize a group to destroy STV.
Vent is critical.
Try to pick a day you predict won't be crowded for RL or in-game reasons. Pay all participants 100g (worked especially well for me), ask friends/guildies, promise them favors/I-owe-you-ones, and emphasize the PvP and the fact that it only takes half an hour. Basically,
do what you have to do to get 6+ people.
If you have enough for a raid (you should), make sure you aren't in it so you can fish up quest fish.
Releasing the Hounds:
For your personal guard, you will want a Paladin with you for Crusader, a healer (preferably the Paladin), and 1-3 DPS to fend off other raiding parties on a PvP server. On a PvE server, you just need the Paladin and maybe one more person. On a PvP server, this group will be hovering within 40 yards of you, keeping fights away from you (as being in combat prevents fishing), and throwing a line in your pool (but not looting any fish) to deter other potential fishers from coming over. On a PvE server, they are just making your pool look busy and scouting for competition/pools.
On PvP servers, everyone else heads up and down the coast and kills every opposite faction in sight or sits on bobbers with fat mounts if they are same faction. On PvE servers, you are just left with the fat mount option for both factions
. You may also taunt those you are camping, hamsters and elderberries, etc. If you have the numbers for it, have two groups, one per coast, to ensure no lucky buggers escape your wrath. Have them scout where you are going to go or where you feel people aren't getting enough "attention", and have them look for pools if they have the ability. Tell them to zerg fishermen and not their protectors; a single corpse run should ruin their shots for first place, so don't linger with any one group unless they keep going for you (the fisher).
Teaching People to Fish Good and Do Other Stuff Good Too:
Use
waterwalking pots
if you are chose an area where, surprise, you are crossing water. Use vent to actively coordinate your raid. You will have free time to plot while you wait for bites. Turn up your sound so you don't miss any bites. Be quick about your recasts, taking chances near the lips of pools but being stuck with the cast because you already invested time in it sucks. When you get close to 40, have a small group go to BB (but NOT your guards) to ensure no one will be ganking you or camping the quest goblin, as it happens often. As an additional odds inflator, have them gank anyone with a fishing pole on their back running towards the quest acceptor and swim away. Above all,
set your hearth for BB
, or have a Warlock summon you next to the goblin so you don't even have to waste the precious 30 seconds hearthing and running to him.
Prepare for lots of QQ and vicious insults as you strut around Booty Bay victorious.
Best of luck on your murderous fishing rampage,
(Only
One That Didn't Get Away
from
Salty
) Tolki

I'm still reeling from the amazing feeling of having won the STV Fishing Tournament about an hour ago. I've been at it since January of this year, every Sunday except Super Bowl Sunday. Was an absoultely amazing experience week in week out, beautiful scenery on the STV coast, and some really fun people still down there working at winning the Tournament themselves.
For me, what ended up working best was just finding as quiet a spot as possible and sticking to it. Letting yourself get involvled with the zerg rush from node to node is not going to get you anywhere at all.
My spot was just south of the Grom'Gol Base Camp, near the little waterfall there. I basically stuck to that area the entire time, not letting myself stray too far looking for a pool to spawn. You will see the groups come and go, but eventually you will find yourself left alone for many minutes at a time, allowing you to take advantage and fish up pools alone.
It takes a lot of patience, but the thrill of knowing that anyone can win at any second was all worth it for me. In a lot of ways, I'm sad that it's over now. However I know I won't be going back, because there can be only 52 winners a year, and I'm not going to be the jerk who stands in the way of someone working hard to win it all.

Hello all!
Just participate today in the contest.
So i want to tell you what happend.
My best race was when i had already 40fishes, HS-ed to booty bay and when leaving the building somebody won it (LOLKEK). But usually i only can get 20-30 fishes when somebody win it.
And now?
! When the contest began,
Horde Druid Mammoths appeared loads of! And each hide 1 node.
They all open a trade window+Duel and each Mammoth follow a member and tried to hide his node!
I tried to ride far south to avoid them, then i met an alliance gankfest group, so it was totally no chance to win this.
Good luck everyone who think it is winnable with elixir of waterwalking and etc. Its su****.

I stuck to the east cost of STV this time around, and it worked out pretty well. Whenever there was a large group of people going one direction, I'd try to go the opposite way and it led me to a fair amount of nodes where no one else was fishing.
As I was hearthing to BB my heart was racing so fast! Such an amazing feeling to finally win :) GL to everyone!

I won today after 18 minutes of fishing, and apparently got very lucky since it was only my sixth time participating in the contest. Once you get above 35 fish the tension is unbearable, your eyes keep drifting down towards the chat box waiting for the winner announcement. I'm not a veteran or expert by any means, but here's a summary of my strategy.
Preparation
I always set my hearthstone to Booty Bay 15-20 minutes before the contest started, then used the extra time to wander out to my starting point. I always did the contest solo, so never had a backup crew to harass competitors :( I guess that's better for me, since it would have been more difficult to concentrate on fishing if I was watching the drama around me. Waterwalking felt essential to me, but that might be because I'm used to it as a shaman. Straight lines across the water cut down on travel time, and every second can potentially count.
Where to fish
I tried Yojamba isle. Once. It was terrible for me, probably just a bad spawn day. There were also two other people out there, and there isn't much space to share. If you go out there and find 2+ people already camped out, you might consider the mainland instead.
I tried the coast between Booty Bay and Gromgol Basecamp twice, and the dead spots were frustrating. Again, probably just not lucky with the spawns.
I liked the southern tip of Stranglethorn the best. There are 4-5 spawn points in the little islands scattered off the tip of the mainland, and enough spawn points along the mainland coast to keep a sizable number of people topped off. The key to my win seemed to be not getting many non-tastyfish catches (I think I caught 1 FF snapper, 1 Oily Blackmouth, and 2 Stonescale Eels... might have been 1 or 2 others, but the vast majority of casts were tastyfish). Don't waste time going to the big island to the east of the pirate ship, I never found any tastyfish spawns there. I would share pools with 1 other person when necessary, keeping a mental tally of how many fish were likely left in the pool so I could cut and run when I assumed my chances of getting a catch on the next cast were low. It also made me feel good to think that the Night Elf next to me might be getting angry. Watch the crowds and the directions they are running, and go in the opposite direction to find your pools. Never follow the crowd, or you will be sharing pools.
I panicked when I hearthed back and turned in the quest, I saw someone else running out of the inn and assumed they were about to claim the prize. I grabbed the fishing pole before I realized that the Kalu'ak purple pole is arguably better. The trinket sounds much cooler... but how often are you in a place to show it off? And now that we can mount and run on the surface of the water, the swim speed bonus isn't much. It would be cool if Blizzard gave these items a little boost, but I am glad to put this one behind me and be one step closer to Salty Ramburglar! Mr. Pinchy is next on my list.

I managed to win this last sunday, on PvE realm Nagrand. I went the southshore's only, took about 20 minutes and there were atleast 3 other players "sharing" the same spot couple times with me.
When i had 39 fish, i casted once again and when something hooked, i got it up and HS, casting that for almost too long when i realised that it was a firefin snapper. Finally got it and just rush to get my pole.
I suggest to migrate to PvE realm if you really want it.. It would have been impossible otherwise for me atleast.. (PvE geared priest) Now i only need 1 gold coin for Salty Iisakki.. Sigh..

The fastest I have seen someone win this contest is 13mins. Wow, that is fast and lucky.
Almost won it today, my 15th try. I had 38 tastyfish(40 needed) (+5 other non-tasty fish)when someone won at 18mins. 18mins is long, most win around 16mins.
As stated above, get the lure that lasts 1h, elixirs of water walking(but don't trust them to stand on water and fish, I seem to sink ever so often?), equip all +fishing gear you have, set HS to BB. And hope noone is 'cheesing' and having their mates crowd and fish, but not loot the tastyfish.
The conteststart will be yelled, in red txt. Pay attention around 13:59, seen it start then, you'll need all the secs you can get to do this.
Ahwell, next time...

I have won this today during Halloween and it was first try since they ever released the event. Due to the fact that most players were busy getting Hallowed title there were not more than 30 players trying this.
Most important for this is to be extremely lucky. I won it in 15 minutes and looted 47 times. Also got one rare. My tactic was simple, SPEED. I used Nitro Boots + Crusader Aura and Aura mastery. I even had time to switch from west zone to the east when i saw competition coming from the north and i didn't even use Hearthstone to get back to the quest giver since it was still on cooldown. Autoloot helps a lot too. I didn't use FishingBuddy.
Anyway this whole event is about having luck and getting the 40 fish within 20 minutes maximum. Keep trying and keep it fair. Good luck!

'A new fishing contest is available, the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby (Every Wednesday) - "The Kalu'ak hold a fishing derby every few days in Northrend. Be the first to catch a Blacktip Shark and win respect with the Kalu'ak, and an amazing prize!" '
Still...would be cool to win it 'the normal way', the Booty Bay fishing contest, I've had 37-38 tasty fish when someone has won last trys now, maybe my turn is soon

I
JUST
finished this today. I still can't believe it. I didn't even plan on actually trying, just getting a feel for what I would need to do in order to win. However, I was doing so well, that I decided to push it and try. It paid off!
Here's what tips I can give:
- Set your hearthstone at the Booty Bay inn before 2pm
- Start out in Northern STV (get there before 2pm)
- Work your way south, but try not to get below the "mouth" to Booty Bay on the map.
- Never,
EVER
fishing in a pool that already has 2 people. You'll just waste precious time.
- If you find a pool that's not being fished out of, stay until you fish it dry or someone else comes along and fishes from it too.
- If you go and fish from a pool that already has one person on it, don't get greedy. You don't know how many they have already fished up, don't try to catch more than 2 fish from it. Also, be ready to mount up, even if you're still fishing. If they "empty" the pool, move.
- Once you get your 40th fish, hearth. Don't cheer. Don't laugh. Use your hearthstone, and turn in the fish.
Above all, you have to understand that luck plays a
HUGE
part of this. You might need several casts to land in the pool, while Little Suzzie can do it in under 3 casts. Or maybe you'll catch a snapper or seaweed rather than a tasty fish.
Just have fun, and hope your casts land where you need them :)

Last weekend I finally won the contest after 4 years of on and off hope and discouragement. I started at the north-east point of this
path
and had to help PvP for about a minute with a guildie halfway down the coast. I then proceeded to catch only
5
non-tastyfish along my route and had 40 fish after a grand total of 17 minutes. Needless to say, the first ally toon to arrive in Booty Bay- a whole minute later- decided attacking me was the best way to show his or her disgruntlement at losing by such a small margin. I probably wouldn't have done the same, but to each his own death.
If nothing else, this just shows
anything is possible
. I won solo, with 590 fishing skill, on a PvP server, in addition to helping a friend PvP when I happened to cross paths with him.
Oh and a few tips from my personal point of view:
Bind "Fishing" to a key, preferably one you can quickly and easily hit repeatedly until the bobber lands
within
the pool. Even FishingBuddy with double right-click is slower than one bound key/click.
I would say
Water Walking
is hax but as
Elixir of Water Walking
is essentially the same for other classes, I'll just say, you should be walking on water at all times.
I've never fished in the west and north-west sections of STV since the possibility of running into other players while running across water from island to island is so low in the southern shores.
Fishing skill definitely helps... to what extent I have no idea. But if you let your
+100
fishing
buff
stay inactive during a cast, the chance of catching a tastyfish seems to drop quite a bit.
Obviously, hearth to Booty Bay. If you waste the few minutes running there, you might as well be running to the nearest tissue box to dry your soon-to-be tears from losing due to a simple mistake.
And finally, if you've already won the contest, maybe even twice because you're pro like that,
stop coming and removing the excitement for everyone else
. No one cares if you've won twice, thrice, or fifteen times. But they will care that you stole the win from that many other people.
Good luck to everyone still hoping to get this :D
Edit: As you can see, Cataclysm ruined my map :(

Dont even try this if you are hated with Booty Bay. Took me 20 minutes to get the fish and 16 minutes to try and hand the quest in, really annoying when you die time and time again just to hooked web

Well, I just got this achievement today on the 29th of November 2009 in (Turtlepower - Frostmane) after 5 weeks of trying with two of my friends, and here's my favourite personal tips which I believe will help make your life easier...
First
, make sure you have your
Fishing
cast button key-binded to a quick reaction key. This will make the spamming easier.
Second
, start off just to the north of Booty Bay, near the Bloodsail Camp, around the bridge. This makes progression to the north much easier from this point on, and its an awesome starting spot as 4 schools of Tastyfish can spawn there right when he yells out.
Third
, set your Hearthstone with time to Booty Bay, and practise the short handing in route to the guy who grants you the Achievement.
Fourth
, don't hesitate to re-cast if you are unsure if the bobber landed inside the pool circle. Its better to guarantee that a fish you want might be caught than to greedily pass on a cast, which might in the end be valuable time to your achievement overall
Happy Fishing and best of luck,
Turtlepower!
PS: Can be quite frustrating to lose by 1 or 2 fish, but that's just part of the game.

I just won the STV fishing contest today, and by all rights I have no idea how it happened.
* This was only my second attempt (and the first was several months ago).
* I was attacked by a crocolisk partway through, and fumbled for several seconds before I found the spell to kill him.
* 11 of my casts were just outside the edges of the Tastyfish pools and were wasted.
* My latency was constantly in the red (~1000ms).
The only explanation (though it makes it even stranger) was that there seemed to be almost no one else competing today. Yojamba Isle and all the surrounding area was completed deserted. I was fully expecting to be racing someone from the Booty Bay hearth to the turn-in, but no one seemed to be there either. Was it just the Thanksgiving weekend? Are people doing the STV contest less and less (looking forward to 3.3's Kalu'ak contest)? Or (considering that I got the Sea Turtle this past week) have I been infused with some unholy sort of luck? D:

Well after many countless attempts to win this I finally have did it! My best advice is keep trying, soon there will be an added contest, but you still get this reward! I have the best poles in game now and as a side note also fished the queenfish and got to put great line on the Arcanite pole. Happy fishing!

Nice to see the achievement has been updated to include the
Kalu'ak Fishing Derby
. 2 chances a week is still not a lot, but it's better than it was!

Last week i won the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby and i would like to share my experience.
I've been hunting this achievement for at least 5 months. I did all the preparation mentioned here and in other various sites, but i had no luck with Booty Bay fishing contest. The reason was that the place was small, always full of people, and there was too much pvp activity. My best catch before a winner was announced, was 33/40 fishes and my worst only 20/40 fishes. Also there were always players of both factions covering the quest giver, so even if you had 40/40 fishes, it was impossible to turn in the quest without attacking an opposing faction player. So, after about 7-8 attempts i stopped doing the contest.
When new patch went live i decided to participate on the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby. Having done all the other fishing achievements, i knew the best places of pools in Northend and how fast they re-spawn. By far the best place with pools and really nice re-spawn time, is the place around Skorn in Howling Fjord. This was the place that i fished the turtle and the dark herring. But i didn't go there to try my luck, because i knew that this place is well known by most of the players hunting fishing achievements, and it would be full.
So i tried the second best place with fishing pools which is Sholazar Basin. The best place in there, with many pools and good re-spawn time is the lake at (38,38), but again it didn't go fish there because it had many people. So i picked an empty spot at The Lost lands at (68,42) and made the route as seen on the
map
. Around these pins there is at least one pool assuming that no other has fished recently.
I managed to catch the shark, on my 5th attempt on the contest, and on my 15th cast, which was the 4th pool that i fished in, and it was around (58,55). The time from the beginning of the event until turn in, was 6:30-7 mins. So if you are the lucky one, you won't need more than 4-5 pools. Also make sure your hearthstone is not at CD. On my last cast, i found out that mine had 2 more mins on CD. I hot-keyed the Kirin Tor ring while i was attempting my last cast, and to my surprise a few seconds later i got the shark. I teleport to Dalaran, mount on my chopper and run like hell to the quest giver. At that time i see another player there, but as it turned out he was just curious of the new quest giver.
The preparation i did is the usual:
PVP gear/fully buffed just in case a player from the opposing faction attacks you.
Hot-key all the necessary things you need (fishing pole, flying mount, ground mount, water walking potions, hearthstone, Kirin Tor ring, Potions for extra fishing skill),
As a Paladin i had Crusader Aura on.
When you land near a fishing pool, try to land on ground instead of water, because the water walking potion isn't working all the times. Also try to be on the side where you can see the fishing pool better.
Wear headphones to listen the sounds better.
Make sure that your hearthstone/Kirin Tor Ring is NOT on CD.
Disable addons. This way the Dalaran loading screen will be quicker.
Make sure you have decided which reward you want from the quest giver at Dalaran.
Success (?)
I hope all these helps you winning the Kalu'ak fishing derby, and the Salty title.

So just as a side note to Tolki's post, some of the strategies he suggests using can be considered griefing/harassment on a PvE server. Feel free to use them if you wish, but know that some people may report you for it.

Seeing "We have a winner!" pop up as I was casting my line into a Tastyfish school with 39 fish in my inventory may be the most frustrating experience I've ever had.

I've tried it today for the first time and won it! Here is what I did :
1) I had a paladin friend with me with crusader aura.
2) I had him looking for the next pool(s) while I was finishing my pool.
3) I had a pvp-priest friend of mine killing alliance in Booty Bay who dared to get near the npc.
Note : The realm I'm on has 95% horde so that really wasn't an issue, me beeing horde too. But still... :P
4) If someone is beeing an asshat and start fishing in your school, stay fishing but don't finish the last one. Go to the next pool before the pool is "out of fishes".
5) PUT YOUR HEARTSTONE IN BOOTY BAY! I can't stress that enough. You don't wanna forget this too, I've heard people thinking they've put it there in advance, had 40 fish and ended up in Dalaran.
6) Get water walking elixirs.
7) I was fishing @ the pirate mobs and the island west of Booty Bay. A lot of pools there and they also spawn near that big island and the boats, most people stay on the shore. :s

I just solo won the STV contest and earned the Salty title.
Time: 14 Minutes
Trash Fish: 5
Areas: Wild Shore, Crystal Shore
This was my second attempt, the previous week I tried fishing the west coast above Grom'Gol. There was too much competition, and I only caught 28 fish before the winner was announced, at the 15 minute mark. This week I had free reign on the wild and crystal shore. There was an abundance of pools, and the area was free of competition. It was close though, two other fisherman arrived seconds behind me, trying to claim the prize.

If i ever get to meet inventor of this achievement im gonna stab him in the eye with a spoon.
Im doing this last 6 months or so, just the Kaluak cuz STV is impossible on my server to do without being some CL in some guild and having 20 ppl around you. I finally got the damn fish today before realm announced the winner, was supper happy... instant HSed... but then what..... wait 20 sec for Dalaran screen to load.... no i don't have !@#$ computer/internet/200 addons .... then i mounted up and i couldnt see any NPC/players cuz of Dalaran lag... run to the quest giver waiting for 5 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec.... "annonce: randomluckyass is the winner"... bang ... 2 sec after i saw damn NPC. I was so pissed like never before. I'we seen idiots with 300 caught fishies win this, i'm over 11k on my statistics and still cant win this. Plus alliance inn is few yards closer then the horde/neutral in Dalaran......

Won the Kalu'ak contest today fishing from the Fangtooth Herring pools in Howling Fjord. Thought it was important to note; I was fishing with a competitor in the same pool. The contest had been going for a few minutes, and she reeled in her cast before me causing the pool to disappear. I was about to mount up and move on but my bobber twitched so I reeled it in, and BAM blacktip shark. The lesson here is that it seems to only matter where your cast LANDS, not where you reel it in. If your cast landed in a pool, don't give up on it. A few tips for the Kalu'ak Derby:
Set your HS to the neutral inn in the middle of Dal, at least if your Horde. Dash out the door, mount up and hook around the corners thru the square to the fountain. You might not think every second matters, but I won this contest 2 seconds before someone else came up to the Elder. Every little bit counts.
Use Glowworms, Gloves with enchants on them, anything you can to buff your skill. As above, every little bit counts.
Don't wait for the contest to start, prepare yourself ahead of time. Get to your location 10 minutes early, scout it out to see where the pools are nearby, clear out any mobs you think might give you trouble. Be ready to start right away.
If someone else is casting in a pool near you, go ahead and jump in with them. The pools can be hard to come by, and it's a competion after all.
Don't bother with clear water; while you can catch the Shark anywhere, you're much more likely to find it in a pool of fish than open water.
Best of luck to all my fellow anglers out there. Now if only Mr Pinchy would show his face.

Did this yesterday, after around 10 failed attempts normally missing by a couple of fish.
Well nothing new to report, had HS in Booty Bay, took 5 water walking elixirs.
As a protection warrior I wore high resilience almost full PVP gear as STV is horde gank land on my server. Didn't die once, also used healing pot once. Had feet rocket boots enchant to help get around that little bit faster also.
Used a macro to switch between weapon and shield and fishing rod, had to kill about 6 horde during the contest.
A rouge friend was taking out nearby enemy fisherman who looked like threatening as well as scouting new pools.
Got to 40 fish and hand in around 45 seconds before the next person showed up.

Just won on my first try in a year in a half! Fished on the right side of the intrance to booty bay (when your leaving Booty Bay) and stayed on that coast line the entire time. Had a few people come and sit on my bobbers but they left pretty quick. Just make sure you have water walking potions and move when there are too many people around dont try and fish a pond where there is someone else just move on! GL

Since I imagine no one on my server looks on WoWHead and this can't really hurt me, I confirmed today that the pools spawn in Northern Stranglethorn. However, the fishing tournament guy's yells don't reach you. Watch the pools like a hawk for the Tastyfish ones to spawn and remember to set your hearth (could have won today but forgot to do that part ;-;).

I finally won Booty Bay fishing contest yesterday!
After reading all the comments and guides I would like to share one very important tip with the community:
- thing that helped me win was the fact that you need to be 100% sure your fishing bobber landed safely into Tastyfish school.
What that means is you don't have time to cast bobber on the edge of the school and "maybe" fish for Tastyfish. In earlier attempts I was in such a hurry and didn't look (camera maxed out) so I was fishing outside the school which resulted in too many "junk fish" and too few Tastyfish ;-)

Do yourself a favor and listen to these posters.
I won the contest today, about 10 seconds ahead of 5 other people showing up. The difference: they all flew while I hearthed. Unless you're fishing in BB itself, even with your flying mount, it's faster to hearth.
Set your hearth to the barkeep @ BB. Test your hearth (make sure to give yourself enough time to come off hearth cooldown before the contest!), and get a feel for the orientation you'll be in when you've hearthed (hardest part of this whole thing is finding the entrance door again....if you're like me and don't go to BB except to fish ><). Note your "escape" plan from the bar and how to get to the quest turn-in (~30 yards?).

I won the Booty Bay fishing contest today, on my first attempt. Unlike some previous posts I've read here, I didn't use a support team or any fancy techniques. I simply flew from pool to pool and fished. I didn't go any further than just around the corner from Booty Bay, and had a short flight back to hand in my catch. It took me about 20 minutes. Another player was about 5 seconds behind me, and several more within about 30 seconds to a minute thereafter. I had an effective fishing skill of 650 (525 base +100 for Aquadynamic Fish Detector and +25 for Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole). However, I don't know that skill level means much since all contest fish are caught from pools anyway.
I chose the Hook of the Master Angler as my reward, which turns me into a fish and allows me to breath underwater. Lots of fun, but basically just a prestige/vanity item.
The bottom line is, ignore the posts suggesting the need for a carefully designed strategy and multi-player support team. You should probably set your hearth to Booty Bay, if you plan to fish further away than I did from the turn-in location. Aside from that, just go fish and have fun. Otherwise, you're taking the whole thing too seriously, and won't be able to enjoy yourself. Also, even if you don't win, you still have a chance to catch some rare fish and exchange them for enchanted fishing gear. After I won today, I fished the remainder of the two hours and caught three rares. This netted me two Lucky Fishing Hats (+5) and a High-Test Eternium Fishing Line (+5).
If you're after the Accomplished Angler meta-achievement, then you'll need to win either this contest or the Kalu'ak one. Don't be discouraged if you don't get it on the first try. The "Salty" title is meant to be relatively difficult to attain, and limited to dedicated fisherman with limitless persistence. I've invested dozens of hours and thousands of fish caught to make painstakingly slow progress toward becoming Salty.
Best of luck to all of you, and happy angling!

I just won the Stranglethorn tournament. If you have a highly competitive server like I do and are having trouble winning, here are some tips which will almost gaurantee your victory:
1) Download FishingBuddy addon and enable double-click to cast.
This will allow you to re-cast your line before even looting your previous pull
. When the bobber moves, simply double-click and both happen simultaneously. Also, set up a keybind (R, T, or something simple) or put a Cast button in the center of the screen for you to click if you have Dominoes or an addon like that. The purpose of this is to further save time, as the only time double-click casting saves you times is when you are looting/recasting. So you'll double-click, then R, R, R until you hit again. Always double-click to loot, and when the pool vanishes with your cast in the water, mount up and continue.
2) The measurements of tastyfish pools seem to be different from any other pool in the game. The radius is smaller. When you attempt to fish when your bobber lands towards the outskirts of the animation, the success rate for pulling a tastyfish is smaller. However,
I have never missed a pull of tastyfish when the cast was more towards the center of the pool
. The "gauranteed tastyfish radius" appears to be about 4/5ths to 3/4ths of the normal pool size. You will save much time by recasting until you're within that radius. On average, you will recast about 5 times; you can easily fit in 2 casts/second using the technique above. So your average casting time will be 2.5 seconds. A single missed pull will waste about 15 seconds.
3) If you are on a pvp server, bring 4 friends. If you don't have friends, go in front of Stormwind or Ogrimmar and offer everyone there X gold to help you out for 20 minutes with the fishing tourney and Y gold if you win. Why in front of SW or Orge? These are the pvp people.
Have 1 person be your wingman, right by you at all times. Have another be your scout, nearby but further away to call out incoming and intercept away from you. Have the other 2 be your offense, one for alliance and one for horde. Ask your group if anyone has a mammoth or other very large mount. One person who does will be your offense for your same faction; If you're alliance, he will stand in the pools of all the fishers he can. Your other offense will be tieing up the opposite faction's fishers as much as possible. If there is a group of 2 or more harassing you, you can always pull back reinforcements for defense as needed, but start out as described.
It is of vital importance to drill home to point of spreading out their efforts.
Tieing up a few fishermen does nothing because it is almost always one noone noticed who wins. Tell them to check every coast and the islands. Update them on your progress between casts to help them pace themselves.
When you are at 32ish fish, tell one of your offense to go to the Booty Bay questgiver and, when you say, "now" (when you are hearthing back), disrupt anyone of the opposite faction there by any means necessary.
4) Fish in the area just north of the Gurubashi Arena (where the river meets the sea). This area has several extremely close pools so your travel time will be minimized. You will often see 4 or 5 on your minimap if you have the ability to find fish (which helps a lot). Also, people tend to stay away from there for 2 reasons. It's in the "middle of everything" and therefore must be highly populated (couldn't be further from the truth) and it's near the territory line between northern and southern stranglethorn (which scares some people for a variety of irrational reasons).
5) When you retrieve your 40th fish:
a) Hearth
b) Speed burst (use a potion or if you're an engineer use nitro boosts. I'm a mage so I macroed nitro + invis to run to the questgiver max speed and untouched).
c) Spam a pre-created macro which targets Riggle Bassbait, interacts with him, goes through the dialogue and item selection, and completes the quest. It is important to include /targetting him in your macro because often people of your faction will be blocking him with mammoth mounts and that is your only way of interacting with him.
6) Gratz.

All I can say is the key is persistence. I've been doing the Kalu'ak derby every week for over a year. About 5 months ago I caught the shark but was slow on the turn-in. Today I got it again, and I was about 10 seconds AHEAD of the next-closest person. I used my kirin-tor ring to get to runweaver square, ran outside, mounted, and FLEW over the building and down to Elder Clearwater. Every little bit helped.

I tried the Kaluak Derby two times. On the first time someone won it in 5 mins. On the other time I fished the whole hour without anyone getting the shark... So I found this rare item fishing kinda bad and gave up.
Then I found STV Fishing Extravaganza is the way to go for my achieve. On the first time when I caught the 36th tastyfish there was a winner already. On the second time I started from the northern STV horde base and flied south. I always had a pool (put find fish on) when not I just skipped the alliance/horde mate and flied over to the next pool and won the race!
Summary: set HS to Booty Bay, use any speed up / potions when completing the quest, find a good coast, always fly to the next pool, put a hotkey on fishing, set auto-loot on and have some luck with fishing timers and with bobber dropping into pools. :)
That's all. When I finished the quest there were about 5-6 ppl behind me after seconds.

Finally got this today, after about two years of casually trying. This is the worst achievement in the game, and it has made me rage so bad. People are complete asshats, even the ones from your own faction. I always wanted to win this "fair and square", but apparently that didn't work out too well for me.
So I joined the dark side and had two friends come along, one to just find pools for me, and the other was completely ruining it for all other people, i.e camping people from the same faction's pools, and attacking hordes to interrupt them.
Funny part though, was that I disconnected just a few seconds before the contest started, and came back online about three minutes later, and yet I managed to win - thanks to my mean friends.
If you really want to win this and you're struggling - bring a few friends, it's not worth the trouble trying to solo it week after week.
Good luck.

Won this yesterday as a level 75 feral druid, Horde side, after about 5-6 weeks of trying. I thought I would share some of my thoughts and strategy.
I'm on a medium population PvP server, and I didn't bring anyone with me. Flying solo, so to speak. After reading El's guide and all of the (extremely helpful) comments here, I decided to modify my tactics, as the "Christopher Columbus" (go out and see what's there) technique to getting this achievement was getting me nowhere.
At 1:30 PM I had already arrived in Booty Bay and set my hearth there. I then flew to Yojamba Isle in Northern Stranglethorn. My equipment was a Bone Fishing Pole (with Spun Truesilver Fishing Line attached) and a stylish Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. At 1:59 I popped an elixir of Water Walking and activated my Fishing Hat Lure (+75). Exactly
no
pools spawned around me when Bassbait kicked it off with a yell. Not auspicious. I then started to trace the coastline south from the extreme NW of Stranglethorn, with Find Fish active. Once I spotted a node, I would skim the water to it in Swift Flight Form, shift, and start fishing.
I had Autoloot on, and any casts that looked as if the bobber was even questionable (on the periphery of the Tastyfish school), I recast rather than risk catching trash. If I didn't land the bobber in the school by my 3rd cast, I changed positioning. This is where the elixirs become crucial.
I doubled back very briefly, saw that nothing had respawned, then made a conscious decision to just keep going south to Grom'Gol. Even with the inevitable bycatch from the schools, I managed to get 10 Tastyfish every 5 minutes (along with 4 Firefin Snapper, 2 Oily Blackmouth, 3 Stonescale Eels, 2 Stranglekelp, and a Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore). Got 40 in 20 minutes, spent the longest 10 second hearth of my life with my hands shaking from the adrenaline dump, got lost twice trying to get out of the tavern, finally stumbled to Riggle and turned my stacks in for the fishing pole. I then sat back stunned, not believing that I'd actually won it. And then I cracked a beer or four.
Some tips that I think helped:
1. Starting in NW Stranglethorn. Even without schools around Yojamba Isle, it's isolated and you have a long involuted stretch of coast to search. I actually had 40 fish
before
reaching Grom'Gol.
2. I think Elixirs of Water Walking (or a similar class ability) are critical to winning. They're cheap, free if you do fishing dailies (Marcia Chase never gives me less than 3 at a time), and allow you to shave valuable seconds off positioning for a proper school cast. If you're restricted to the shore, you will waste time, having limited options on where to stand.
3. Fly low. If you shift too high above a school and even take a single point of falling damage, you lose your elixir buff and waste time floundering in the water.
4. Move. Just move. If you're having trouble finding schools, head to unexplored territory rather than areas you've covered. Keep yourself on the clock. The contest is almost always won within 20 minutes, give or take 3-5. That works out to about 2 Tastyfish a minute, give or take. Always be casting.
5. Decide what reward you want ahead of time, know where it sits on the menu to click it. The turn-in is
NOT
the place to have second thoughts ("I wonder how I would look as a fish . . .") and get burned.
6. Set your hearth to Booty Bay. Memorize how to get out of the tavern and to Riggle for the turn-in. It sounds silly, but your heart will be leaping out of your chest when you have 40 fish, and you
will
be freaking out, thinking that someone is directly ahead of you and going to beat you by a quarter second. Don't make this a self-fulfilling prophecy.
7. Be patient. Don't get frustrated. Luck is a large part of this contest, although your strategy can tip the odds in your favor. If you don't win, troubleshoot and decide what you're going to do differently next week, if anything.
Happy angling to all!

Something really weird happened today. I was fishing for Kaluak and a Warrior came in the same pool that I was. On the second catch our bobble was almost at the same place, and we both caught the shark at the same time, I freaked out when he started to cast hearthstone, my teleport was 2s late and he won, for 2s =)
So, in short, it is possible to catch 2 sharks from the same pool at the same time!

I got this achivement on the 04/09/2011 and it was the 3 achivement from salty so i was pretty damn happy about winning this!(:.
Well i started out just east of Westfall up by the islands and went over to the mainland where the trolls are.
When it started I got about 8 pools for myself and i started fishing. I finished in 18 minutes so i got quite lucky. This was the third time i was in this competition and i knew where to fish and I talked to other anglers that won where they fished tips and tricks.
To make it easier for you other anglers:
Try to team up with a friend of yours to go around and gank people from the other faction. Also if you are going against people from the same faction, your buddy can also fish from their pools.
If you are in a highlevel guild you can have one standing on the shore just east of booty bay to have them summon you if you don't do well where you are fishing.
Always have heartstone in Booty bay before the contest.
If you loose you can always ask the other angler that won where what he did and he will probably give you some necessary information(be friendly, it worked for me atleast)
Other anglers i wish you the best luck.
Sorry for my bad English.

I know people hate the comments where some jerk comes along and says "hey, i got it on my first try"... well, I won this on my first try
and in my haste to click "complete" before the other guy flying up to me could get it, i clicked the trinket rather than the pole. so, i'm not a bragger, i'm an idiot. (though, advice I've seen was pretty good - i did this on the last weekend day of Brewfest, hardly ANYONE around!)

I just won the Stranglethorn fishing contest on Darksorrow EU 20 minutes ago. Me and a guildmate agreed to have a little intern competition during it, but because he got killed a lot by a rogue, he decided to help me out and annoy other people in the region. Friends <3. Also, Northern Stranglethorn can be recommended. Almost everyone is fishing on the Cape, atleast on my server.

Honestly, @#$%, this achievement. I cant believe they require it for Salty.
The day I made my Warrior alt I set out to get Salty and didnt know much about the competitions. After spending all my time to make him the 'Master Angler' getting him Nats Lucky Pole and every other achievement I could find. Then I get to 73 and decided I should start participating in the Fishing tourneys to get the achievement as its the only one I have left for Salty.(besides Lurker Below which Iam getting a guildy to help me with since Iam only 73)
Then I find out that they are only held on Saturdays and Sundays. >.>
I go to school Monday through Friday and work Friday through Monday. So my weekends are NEVER open. I havnt had one off in 6 months and theres no way I can take one off as I need the money for school and gas. So this weekend my car breaks down and I have to take 3 days off work to fix it. I manage to get it fixed the second day and decide I should go participate since I have the weekend off now.
I researched them, found the best places to fish, set my hearths did everything in my power. Come Saturday someone wins the Ka'ulak in 7 minutes and Sunday someone just won the Booty Bay in 13 mins. This is outrageous Blizzard requires this for the title. I did everything else I could and spent all my time and effort trying to get it and even took a weekend off work to try and got smashed before I even got started.
I really hope they decide to Change this come Mists or something because I feel extremely discouraged to play now that the one title I had been fighting for more then any other is completely unobtainable for me. They need to change it up during the week or something so people with different schedules can participate. Thats whats raid groups do to optimize their playing time, they should consider it with this, since not everybody has 2:00pm in the middle of the @#$%ing weekend to dedicate to fishing in WoW for 5 minutes while someone else smashes you because of RNG. >.>

Earned this achievement today, with the help of two guild mates. Much as I don't like to say it, this is one of those achievements that encourages rude behavior for success- my guildmates drove off any opposing faction players while protecting me from being attacked by them, then found players of the same faction and fished from their pools.

Did this in my first try around a month ago. I was aiming for "Salty" and was missing this achievement and since the Northrend competition is way worse I decided to give it a shot.
What I did is install "Fishing Buddy", get auto loot on, go to the northern part of STV where the trolls are and start fishing. Be sure to get a lure a minute before the event starts so you don't have any downtimes.
Important tip: If your bobber lands near the pool and you aren't sure if you're going to catch the fish it's better to recast although you will sometimes rage how blind your character is !
Make sure to have your hearthstone set to Booty Bay. Happy fishing !

I think it should be noted, at least for horde (i'm not sure of alliance), that if you have the zandalari questline in STV, you can be phased out of the fishing. So check and make sure you can see the regular schools of fish along the coastline before you attempt the tournament. If you cannot, chances are you are phased and will not be able to see the tastyfish schools. I learned this the hard way -_-

I won the Booty Bay fishing contest today, on my second attempt. As others have said, make sure you do the following in order to maximize your chances:-
1. Set your hearthstone to Booty Bay. Do a test run ~1 hour before the competition starts, so that you are familiar with your positioning in relation to the doorway when you hearth into the inn.
2. Riggle Bassbait is located outside the inn, next to the fishing trainer. If you don't have his whereabouts pinned down, you will waste valuable time looking for him. Immediately after I handed the tastyfish in, three players arrived (5-10 seconds behind me). Knowing exactly where you are going makes all the difference.
3. When selecting an area, I'd advise trying out Wild Shore. I started on the western edge and worked my way east. Despite more than 20 horde and (presumably) a healthy number of alliance in the area, I saw no one until I was fishing my final school, and I never had to leave the area or double back on myself.
4. Don't give up! Even with the large number of competitors, it still took me 19 minutes. Keep your eye on your bobber rather than the text box, and remain calm.
Good luck!

I won today ( stranglethorn competition ) after who knows how many attempts.
Ive been trying seriously since Cataclysm came out and the competition thinned out about a month ago.
The contest would go longer and longer.
I won today by sticking around the sundering ( the outer edge of the big whirlpool between northern and the cape ).
Pools just kept popping up from everyone in other areas.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

I have won this thing multiple times without the help of anyone else. Here is my advice:
Set your hearth to Booty Bay.
Arrive early and scout out the area - many times you can find people waiting by the shore ahead of time. I use the time 5 minutes before the start of the tourney, to scout things out, and then I look for a quiet place to fish.
Carry Water-walking potions on you.
Don't waste your time doing anything, BUT fishing. - This one is the key, as some people will stop to attack someone else if they try to fish out of the same pool. If this happens, just ignore the person, and keep fishing.
Learn where the pools seem to spawn in abundant supply. The last time I won this tournement, I started NW of bootybay along the coast, and eventually ended up by the 3 pirate ships on the SouthEastern shore.
Turn your !@#$ in quick. Once you get back to the quest giver, if you are the first person, you will be asked to select your choice of reward. If you take too long on this, someone else might walk up and win the tourney up from under your nose. So identify what item you want ahead of time, and make sure you select it quickly once the menu appears.
You don't need high level fishing to improve your odds....you just need to be able to get your casts inside of the pools quickly....so practice your range. And if you find you still can't seem to win...I suppose that you could always hire a bunch of mercanaries to grief everyone else while you fish.

just won it 10minutes ago on my first attempt, its a shame that the ring is not available in SCT fishing event. so then i have too wait for the next weekend to try to cover it.
Had used follow tipps and hints:
Waterwalking pot
Spotting fishspots (the ability)
1x Sprint pot for the delivering
Heartstone to Booty Bay
Addon FishingBuddy
Recast often to land your pin in the spot. if its not in the spot stop wasting your time and recast
Ask a guild m8 to stay near the questgiver for massport(use it as long as its available)
Some performance hints:
10minutes before the beginning i just flew around and tryed to cover some fishing spots
3minutes before the beginning i closed wow to clean up my ram and closed every useless background programm (to prevent long loading times)
then just logged in only with wow open and flew to the big waterwhirl between SCT and northern STV
How it goes:
i and a guild m8 were racing for it and he started on the right side where the ruins are but thats wrong because most users are trying to fish in the SCT. so you have enough space between the waterwhirl. just fish around waterwhirl, when all spots are gone just go abit down to the arena or to grom'gol fish there 1-2spots and just move again to the waterwhirl. this took me around 15minutes to collect all 40fish and had nearly 1.30minutes left till the others came in.
Just keep in mind think over it what you want to take, otherwise someone else will get the winning stuff before you.

As a Salty person myself I find it insulting to change this Achievement to "1st, 2nd or 3rd" place. People worked hard for this! it had value ! I feel proud wearing my Salty title yet the new 5.1 beta gave us the following patch update: "Master Angler of Azeroth now is awarded to anyone who wins first, second, or third place."
It's a sad day in fishing history my friends!

As of 5.1 there is now 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby has been removed as an option to obtain this. All the rewards from the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby have been folded into the STV one and speculation is that it has been removed permanently.

Short guide for someone seeking to win it the "normal" way on PvE server (no griefing):
Your biggest time consumers are movement between pools and hitting the pool.
Optimizing movement:
Arrive 10-15 minutes before the contest and fly around, looking for pools and people. Take note where the crowd is. Your ideal location would have 3-4 pools just for yourself. Avoid moving with the crowd - move in the opposite direction. Flying mounts make backtracking very fast, and if you can get a couple of pools to fish in peace, you'll compensate for the time lost travelling.
There isn't any "perfect" place - one time the river of Northern Stranglethorn will be deserted and, therefore, great place to fish, other time there can be 5+ people running around it. Think fast and make decisions.
Optimizing fishing
I've found this to be vastly overlooked source of delay, but failing to catch from a pool or recasting needlessly can add up to several minutes of wasted time. The fact is that the pool area is a bit larger than a graphic. Best way to experiment with it is to take a character with low-level fishing skill, go into high-level fishing zone and try to fish from pools. If you are getting grey trash - your cast was outside the pool. Experiment with a distance you stand from a pool and camera angle. You should be comfortable enough to instantly judge if a bobber is in a pool or not. If you have doubts, recast it - recasting takes you just a second, while fishing outside the pool - ~10 seconds. Obviously, click your bobber fast and recast immediately. I always recast after a catch, and only mount up when I see pool disappearing.
Some numbers and tips
- on average, I hit a pool from 1-2 casts. There will always be unlucky streaks where your bobber seems to land all around the place. Don't worry and keep recasting it. There is no "cursed" pools, so no need to move to another one. If this happens I move a little, but I don't think it really helps.
- organize your bags and keep one bag with the fish open, so you can clearly see your progress. You can move stuff around in your bags while fishing is in progress.
- if you catch some other fish rather than tastyfish, don't worry. Just keep fishing.
- never fish the waterlogged wreckage pools! (mouseover the pools on the minimap while you are flying).
- the fastest win I've seen was around 10 minutes. The majority of them happens around 15-16 minutes, and sometimes as late as 22 minutes. In general, if you have more than 20 fish at the 10 minutes mark, you are in good shape.
- Never lose heart! If you think you are behind, don't worry - a group of closely-located pools can net you lots of fish very quickly.
- Remain concentrated and keep your cool. Ignore everything else.
- Avoid fishing with others if you can. If pool disappears while you are still fishing, move to the next one. The fish caught is determined when the splash occurs.
- You can also start fishing before the contest begins. As long as the bobber splashes after the goblin yells, it will give tastyfish. These couple of seconds don't really matter, but can help with your morale.
Good luck, fellow anglers!

This achievement CAN be earned if you are hated with Booty Bay. All you have to do is fly up behind the quest guy and just get into the range of clicking on him. I learned the hard way after farming for Booty Bay rep for hours when I could have been getting to level 90. I was only halfway into "hated" by Booty Bay and decided to fish anyway just to get first place =D

For anyone going primarily for this achievement, don't be discouraged when first and second place are called. I'm guessing that most people only go to get the ring and either already have or don't care about this achievement and stop wasting their time once first and second place are taken. Today, first place was called when I had only about 20 fish, and second place was called shortly after that. I kept fishing, getting attacked and camped by alliance, and griefed by fellow horde, and was able to seize third place in time anyway.
I have also read (not sure of reliability, though) that while pools are cross-realm, placing in the tournament is realm-specific. I saw a lot of people still fishing after second place was won, so if this is true, don't be too discouraged if you see the same; they could be fishing towards another realm's tournament.
tl;dr: I may have been lucky, but third place wasn't very hard to get, and required little to no planning or coordination with others. Hope this helps! Good luck!

2013 and it's still a rough competing contest, at least on my server.
Me myself had only this achievment left to obtain Salty title and I was thinking why not give it a try and finish it off for real. It was my first attempt and as a competitive person as I am regardless what Im going in for I just had to give 100% to stay focused, rational and systematic.
I did my research the evening before for useful information to win( to reach1-3 place). If you are not prepared your odds is much lower, simple is that.
I can say that Northern stranglethorn is way the best spot, less crowded.. and not in the sea moar in the middle of the map. You have to figure it out yourself to fly there before the contest to check out the environment.
Without this information and starting off to reach about maybe 6 pools without having to mount I had not been able to get my second place because it only took
14 minutes
for me to get 40 fishes which is required and after what I've read 14 minutes is quite fast.
That was just because I had lots of pools around me. Find a similar spot and you will also get your achievment!
When I hearthed back to BB and claimed my second place(I'm priest so I used the shield boost speed from the Inn to the fishing NPC)......
3 seconds(!) after me the third place was announced and after the third guy about (lol) 10 other arrives just within 0-2 minutes.
I picked the heirloom ring, remember to check what reward you mostly would like to have before because you have to choose directly when handling in fishes and you don't have time to think what reward you want in that situation.
I also had my mount on button 1, fishing cast ability on 2, levitate on another keybind to rebuff it, an instant fast killing spell on button 3 to kill aligators with which I had to do once when it was close to one of my pools, and autoloot on without keybind which is useful so you wont fail with the looting.
Good luck! It's easy if you are prepared and if you really want to win this for the Salty title just prepare yourself and maintain focused and dont bother of other characters, focus on your own job!
Good luck my friend!:)

On 06-23-2013 @ 6:10 realm time, I thought I would fly to the area to see exactly what is involved in trying to win this achievement. An hour after it had started, I figured it would be slow, if not over. Never being here before during a tourney event, I had no clue as to what to do...so I just started fishing. I did know that you received "gold" for turning the wanted fish in, so I fished up 45 with no problem (no one was around, except 1 Alliance--I am Horde). Flew back to the dock to collect my gold, and I'll be darn....I had won 3rd place. Yes....3rd place. Completely blew me away, I am still smiling (and BF is still thinking/saying "I am the luckiest person in WoW he knows"). I agree. Pure luck.
Now to catch one of those rare fish, and I will be "Salty". How sweet is that. I love being an achievement "horde". Good Luck all...It can happen :))

Here's a little guide for STFE if you really want to win, even at the expense of other people getting major rage at you. (And trust me, using this has garnered a whole lot of rage in my time.)
Firstly, prepare like normal.
Make sure that your character is level 90, Has their hearth set in booty bay (Ignore this if you have teleport boots)Has the best possible flying skills and some spare water walking pots if your buddy gets out of range (More on this further down). Practice casting your bobber into pools, and landing on water surfaces with waterwalking pots beforehand. Remember that if your camera is tilted downwards too far when you land with waterwalking, you will dive downwards. As hilarious as this is for your opponents, it wont bode well for you.
Next, grab two friends, Specifically a male worgen/tauren and a death knight. (Death knight is optional if your character is one, but you still need an extra hand along to help.) The death knights job is to keep you and the worgen / tauren waterwalked with path of frost. Past that, the Death knight should be used to either overcrowd (More on this in the dirty tactics section) or to scout ahead for pools. The worgen / tauren's job is to be huge. This is helped by either darkmoon firewater or elixir of giant growth. Most seasoned anglers will have a few vials of firewater lying about, but dabblers can rather easily get an alchemist to make them some giant growth pots. (Go poke a druid.) The being huge part will be explained in a bit.
After these two stages, begin fishing along the coast, emptying every pool that you see in southern stranglethorn. If you run out of pools there, move as far north as you can, slowly working your way up. This basically pushes all of the pool spawn up to the top which benefits you more. This process is best started 30 minutes to an hour before the actual competition. After this, sit down on yojamba isle and enjoy a nice cool drink whilst waiting for the competition to start. This is where all of your hard work comes to fruition.
Now its time for the real reason that you are reading this post, how I manage to win so consistently on my realm. Firstly, Remember your huge buddy? That person will be your best friend at the end of this. Their job is the most important, and yet also the simplest. Here's how it goes: You fish in a pool, a stranger comes along and begins fishing in the same pool, huge friend sits on their fishing bobber, brace ears for shouting, after rage they leave the pool, rinse and repeat. This pretty much guarantees that you fish every single catch out of every single pool that you fly up to. Secondly, the other friend that you brought along does two things. They scout out new pools for you then they mount a huge mount like a mammoth or a proto-drake and completely block anybody from fishing in it. you then have a fresh pool once you are done with your current one. A second thing that both friends can do is fish in the same pool as you, but not loot their casts. This creates the illusion of overcrowding, causing people to ignore the pool that you are fishing in. Once you have all your tastyfish, teleport back to booty bay and bask in that first place goodness.
This seriously works, and can result in gaps of up to 5 minutes between your win and the second place player, but do be warned that people go ham at you for this.
The rage is indeed prevalent. :P

Won second place today by one minute at 5:16pm on my favorite quiet server by fishing along the river that runs through Northern Stranglethorn (Sagefish Schools). I ended up catching like 11 Sagefishes and 40 Tastyfishes. Not sure if you have a similar success/failure rate if you choose to fish in the Mixed Ocean Schools instead.

1. CRZs will get in your way. Each pool only has a limited number of "loots" so the more people fishing make it disappear quicker. If one person comes up as you're fishing you can still squeeze out a few casts, especially if their lures don't land in the pool. If more than one person comes up and starts crowding a pool it's best to move on and find a fresh one.
2. On a whim I just set my hearth to Booty Bay and had no real buffs or any special equipment. It's just looting as many casts as possible, hearthing back, and turning it in before anyone else. It seems the CRZs can turn in but it counts on their server, not your server so if you see someone running to turn it in just keep going.
3. You have to choose a reward to turn in the quest, so while you're looking at which piece you want, someone can still beat you. It would be better to memorize a screenshot of the rewards so you know which one to choose as quickly as possible.
Good Luck.

I completed this a few days ago. After trying each week for months and never being able to finish in the top three, I talked two guildies into coming with me. There were more people than normal trying that day, however while I fished the other two guild members searched for my next pools for me and killed or slowed down all of the other fishermen they could, including a free-for-all battle at the quest giver where you turn in the 40 tastyfish. This proved to be my saving grace as I finally won it. I was on fish 38 before someone came in first place. I caught number 40, and hearthed back to Booty Bay, and turned mine in or second place, my saltly title, and the BOA ring.
I had less than 200 skill of fishing on this toon, but nobody messed with me and my buddies slowed down the others as much as they could.

After 10 weeks of attending the STV Fishing Extravaganza diligently, I finally managed to get 2nd place to get the BoA ring I was eyeing. Doing this on a PvE server would probably be ideal. I know most of you know how to do the fishing contest but here's what
I
did -
I used my
Dragon Fishing Pole
&
Anglers Fishing Raft
.
*I changed keybinds 1-4 with #1 -
Fishing
, #2 - Any mount that isn't big. (I used my
Jeweled Onyx Panther
,) #3 -
Anglers Fishing Raft
& #4 -
Hearthstone
. (Set my inn to Booty Bay.)
Every time before the contest started at 5pm, I got there by 4:45pm to have time to set my inn to Booty Bay & scout for spots people weren't sitting at.
*The competition starts automatically at 5pm so you don't have to talk to anyone. Just find a pool (wreckage pools count too) & start fishing as soon as you see
Riggle Bassbait
scream in general chat that the tournament has begun. You need 40 (2 stacks) of
Speckled Tastyfish
. I stayed on the northern (left) side of the zone, north of Booty Bay the whole time. I found more pools & less people trying to fish from the same pools & the pool spawn rate seemed to be faster.
When casting, even if your cast lands on the edge of the pool, it still counts so don't re-cast if you see this happen! Having the ability to "
Find Fish
" & having auto-loot on is a must!
Another thing I want to point out is that everytime I flew down, I dismounted in the air & made sure to land in water & click keybind #3 for my
Anglers Fishing Raft
as soon as I hit the water then space bar to get above water & stay afloat. This helps position yourself better in places where there really isn't any land to stand on. Plus while other people are mounting up & going to the next spot over, you can just use your raft & swim over without wasting time mounting up/dismounting.
That's really pretty much it.
Good luck all.

I didn't see this prominently displayed in any advice posts, so I wanted to drop the tip that you should
bind your 'fishing' ability that casts the line, to a key.
Clicking on the ability moving your mouse to the bobber, looting moving your most back to the ability to re-cast, etc takes time. Seconds, to be sure, but seconds is what this comes down to alot.

I figured I would give this tournament a try today, 9/07/2014. First time I ever tried it and I got first place. No fishing rod, no fishing buffs, fishing level was only 552.
I stood there and a lot of people were getting the achievement (way more than me and 2 others), so I think 1st, 2nd, 3rd place are realm only and CRZ does not affect that.

A few thoughts. I think this should be made into a feat of strength. Just about any other thing in wow with such a low chance of attainment is a FOS. That being said regardless of whether this happens or not it should definitely be taken off of the Accomplished Angler meta. The entire rest of the meta is about patience and determination, and while luck of the draw will always be a part of fishing, anyone willing to put in the time can get them. The same can not really be said for this. With so few chances to win and cross realm mechanics increasing competition most players would never be able to complete the meta and get the title. Perhaps even if they changed the meta so you didn't have to place, but merely turn in the required 40 fish in a given period of time. They could still make it challenging to require people to display their fishing skills. Though really fishing is governed by 4 layers of randomness and is thus less about skill. These are whether the bobber lands in the pool, whether the fish that pops is the right one, how many fish can actually be fished out of a given pool, and finally where and when the pools spawn. And this doesn't even bring in to account other players, competition, pvp, or people sitting on pools with giant mounts.

First time I tried in 3 years and I got 3rd place, and thus achievement. I started fishing all the way at the start of the river in Northern STV, and worked my way down to the lake. Lots of respawns around me and my waterwalking saved the day.

I just got 1st place today, seeing so many people with fishing guilds, fishing hats and cool looking fishing poles. I felt pretty good winnig with 400 fishing skill and a stick. I didn't exactly intend to win, I just wanted to test it since I've always wanted to but always forgotten to attend.
But I really wish there were 3 tiers and a title. 3rd place: 10pts. 2nd: 20pts. 1st: 30pts. And a title called for example <Name, Master Angler of Azeroth>

I tried this just over 50 minutes ago for the
first time
ever, and this had arrived in the second half of 2005. Almost ten years later! I could not believe how many people there were in the zone. About a half hour towards showtime, the zone filled to over 25 people. I hadn't seen that since Classic World of Warcraft days. I couldn't imagine being on a PvP server for this.
I thought this was an event long forgotten by the masses, even with CRZ not counting towards 1st, 2nd, or 3rd places thank goodness.
Thankfully I was able to get third place, and I finally achieved the Salty title that I had been missing since The Burning Crusade. At last, long last, I am done with STV and could not care any less about the other rewards Riggle offers.
Some tips:
- Practice your pool fishing before the tournament, make sure you have a system that works well for you to get your fishing line in the pools.
- Yes you will hear Riggle announce the Tournament is on from Northern Stranglethorn Vale.
- Get rid of distractions like your Hunter/Warlock pet, critters/small pets, etc, extra buffs. The last thing you need is being distracted by a crocolisk aggroing on your pet.
- Being a Hunter, I turned off all minimap tracking except for Humanoid and Fishing Pools, you don't need to see all the beasts and undead running around the coastline.
- The pools in the interior seem to be less populated than those along the coast, take the Northern Stranglethorn river and inward lake near the Venture Company Base Camp.
- Set your hearthstone to Booty Bay well in advance, and don't use it too close towards the contest start or you'll be on a cooldown still and the last thing you need is to be flying back after catching 40 fish and finding out that winners have already been announced when a hearthstone would have guaranteed you victory.
- I used my basic "built-in" tree branch & leaf fishing rod, with zero added skills other than the level 700 Warlords of Draenor profession fishing skill. Tastyfish loved me. I didn't even wear a fishing hat.
- I did every single cast in every pool I found, except when someone else flew by and decided to share my pool, then I would finish my cast and leave for the next.

This achievement could become harder to get with people wanting to complete their collection in the upcoming heirloom system in 6.1. I'd recommend trying to do it as soon as possible.

I can't stress enough that the Bloodsail Wreckage pools also give you tournament fish. I so many people passing up those pools during the contest.

Got the ring today on my first attempt of the tourney. I read a lot of guides and set my hearth in booty bay. As soon as I hit 40 fish (which took me 12 minutes) I
hearthed
and turned in, within 5 seconds of me turning this in second and third place was announced. Don't worry about your number of fish per minute and about the number of people around you.
Just focus on finding pool of fish and getting the overall 40. PvP servers: Good Luck!
I used a basic fishing rod, the bobbles that gave +75 fishing (sold by the vendor below the tourney guy) and my fishing skill was 358 at start.
YOU DON'T NEED MAX FISHING SKILL TO WIN.
All pools can reward fish. A random Bloodsail Wreckage I found had 6 before it disappeared!

Just got this a few minutes ago.
Sporting 1100 fishing (which I believe is the highest we can go in this xpac). Using the
带触须的帽子
and the
日抛型鱼竿
which are both garrison drops and obviously
超级鱼虫
and
水上行走药剂
.
Took me a total of 17 minutes and 13 seconds to get the 40
斑点可口鱼
, target
林格·巴斯贝特
over all the mounts (I made a macro to target him before the event started because I know my fellow peers well enough) and quickly glance over at where
海狼之戒
was in order to select it (second one down on the left hand side).
Only need 4 more days of dailies with whats his name over in Terrokar and you can call me Salty Stasht.

Set your hearthstone to booty bay, make sure you have some sort of water walking, and stay in the middle of the region only fishing in the pools.
I fished at the
Venture Co. Base Camp
/way 42.3 , 46.9
It took exactly 20 minutes. I highly recommend "

I WON THIS! At last! HOLY MOLLY!
10 years
of trying this achievement but now I understand: that
ONLY
thing you should do - level up
A DRUID
on low population server and fish over Nek'mani wellspring! THAT'S ALL. You don't need to use ANYTHING. You just need fishing skill over 200 (so you would never fish a garbage) and use your travel form to immediately switch places over 4 spots that share one cooldown routs.
I was leveling my druid for three days after work and came as 60 lvl to this tournament on
Earthen Ring
server (lowes population server). No competition whatsoever. I even *!@#up myself by casting
4!
times a fish bobber when I didn't get the fish from previous loot yet. But I still managed to earn 3rd place. And moreover I fished out a rare fish for another achievement
没跑掉的鱼
so I've got THREE achievements in a price of one!
垂钓有成
没跑掉的鱼
and this one.
Pfew. BYE stupid ass achievement. I don't need to try hard you so much anymore. I'M FREE! WEEEEEEE!11

I tried this at 2PM servertime on Dragonblight-EU. The announcement was never made, schools never dropped the fish and the quest-giver never appeared. Could anyone confirm that this achievement is still possible to get? And confirm that it is indeed 2PM servertime on Sundays?

I notified that they modified this achievementwith patch 7.1. Before, it was something like : "Be first, second or third in bootybay fishing contest".
I wanted to check, I was on my server at 14pm but there is still no yelling to say that the contest start :(

It is ONLY for the first 3 people who complete the quest. Once three people complete it, the fish for the quest DO NOT spawn in any pools.
I had 38/40 and after the message that someone competed the event went off for the third time, the quest disappeared and in the next 5-10 min I did not catch any of the fish for the quest.

Just thought I would post this for anyone else looking for this information
Game Master Rainmithwen here. At the moment, the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is continuing to be beset by a bug that is preventing it from starting properly on all Oceanic realms. This issue has persisted despite our best efforts to get it fixed, and in fact we've thought we had it fixed no less than three times already only to find that the fixes either didn't solve the problem at all, or only caused the event to start once, after which they failed to start properly again.
It may be some time before we are finally able to get this issue resolved, sadly. For the moment, the most expedient way to take part will most likely be to level a character on a non-Oceanic realm, as those realms are quite oddly not affected by this bug.
I am sorry for any confusion this issue has caused, and I hope that we're able to get a fix in for the problem that solves it long-term. Until then, should you choose to create a character on another realm to go for the event, I wish you the very best of luck.
The World quest was showing up on a Tuesday for me but when I hearthed to Booty Bay it would disappear.
For the minute the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is not working on Oceanic Realms.

OCE players, can you please post what time EXACTLY the event starts (in your timezone with timezone noted or on SVT). For about 2 months, on every sunday, waiting around the specified time, and it still hasn't spawned. Does it spawn mondays for OCE instead of sundays to line up with US players?
Bit peeved that GMs couldn't even answer and instead linked me this very page.

Seems to be mostly based on luck. First time: 37 fish. Second time: 38 fish. Third time: Won with an extra minute or so to spare.
Did nothing different in all 3 tries. Same spot, same fishing skill, but on my winning attempt i get 25 straight tasty fish catches before i got a non-tasty fish catch. I also kept getting 4-6 fish from a single pool.
Just seems to be total RNG and Luck.
- Luck that you'll always or almost always get tasty fish
- Luck that the pools you're fishing from won't end after 3 casts
- Luck that people won't fish in your pool or pools near you
- Luck that pools will spawn near you
- Luck that other players won't be lucky
- Luck that your catches are at the middle of your cast, rather than near the tail-end
Luck on top of luck on top of luck. If you don't win, don't worry. Just keep trying and eventually luck will be in your favour.

Alright, just won this seconds a go 16/9/2018. Was my second try after researching all kinds of guides. NOW, if you are like 99% people, you will google "how to win stv fishing contest" or read comments here. What that means, is there is TON OF PEOPLE on the recommended sites, like Goblin Oil Drill or the rivers next to it.
If you want to win, you have to find quiet spot, for example on the coast. I had NO PEOPLE contesting over the pools, i was able to get all the tasty fish myself. I did miscast, land on bad spot, caught ton of crap, but because it was so quiet on the coast.. i was able to caught all the fish in 13minutes.
I could write my spot here, but then there would be 40 people fishing with you there and then it's ruined for everyone. So just find a quiet spot and fish there. The pools spawn very fast and you rarely have to move far away for the next one.
Dont give up, you can make all kinds of mistakes and still win like me, if you caught trash fish like me ( 4 yellowtail, 3 oilsnapper ) it does not mean you will lose the contest.
I got the angel fish too, that does not count for the 40 tastyfish.
Best of luck to you all!

I won this 26/04.
This was my fourth try, and in the previous attempts I was fishing in the all over the river in Northern Stranglethorn. The problem here is 90% of the people in STV is farming in the river, so you have ALOT of people competing for your pools.
In my last attempt I tried the coast instead, and found there are just as many pools there as in the river, but with much less people competing for them. I was mainly fishing in the area around Hardwrench Hideout, and had barely any people competing for the multitude of pools there, so was able to finish in about 11 minutes. This was with Highmountain Tauren buff proccing 4 times, so a bit of luck as well.
As for preparation I defintely reccomend Highmountain Druids, as the instant flight form + chance for extra fish is really helpful. It's RNG though so you might not get a single proc. Other than that I do reccomend leveling fishing a little bit, as it seemed to me I got less junk when I had higher fishing. Might be luck though, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Edit: I will add the pools spawn really quickly, so even if you don't find any pools in your area when flying over once, don't be afraid to fly back after fishing another pool or two, I did this several times to find new pools had spawned.
Good luck!

Got mine today on first try, High Mountain Tauren Druid with 175 fishing skill and the strong iron fishing rod from Desolace, I completely forgot to use the fish attractor lure. I only remembered to put the oversize bobber on when someone else with it cast in a pool I was at (and obscured mine). Even so, I got (I think) 3 procs of Tastyfish from the racial in about 60 casts.
Just as a FYI, you can get the tastyfish from the pools of wreckage (just as you get ironbound trunks from the mixed ocean school pools that are what spawn).
I hearthed back to Booty Bay and was within sight of the NPC (with the yellow "?" over his head) when he shouted that the contest was over, but 3 seconds later I was able to hand in and get my achievement and heirloom ring, and he shouted that again, and twice more for 2 people that arrived just after me.

Got this today on a human hunter. Did no scouting or anything special. Had fishing skills from classic to cata maxed on the character, and 44/75 panda fishing. Don't have legion or BFA fishing even trained. Jeweled fishing pole, no bait, oversized bobber. Super inefficiently running around for pools. He did his halfway done shout as I was reeling in my 38th fish. Hearthed to booty bay and got my ring.

Just got it today 3rd-4th try in total.
There were only a few others in the area maybe cause the Shadowlands prepatch is on atm.
Class trials don't work as you won't be able to start the quest.
Highmountain perk gave me around 5 extra fishes.

Complete this today (22/11/2020) on Thrall during the Shadowlands prepatch 9.0.1.
Race: Highmountain Tauren for the racial, got 3 procs during the event, so 3 free fishes. Not mandatory, just helpful.
Class: Druid, for the instant flight. Again not mandatory, just shaving off those precious seconda, especially when a pool is depleted, you’ll be the first in the air looking for a new pool.
Help: I had a friend helping me scout the next pools to fly to, skipping the crowded ones. Super helpful, so if you have a friend with Find Fish that can help you, you’ll spend less time searching and more time fishing.
Zone: Upper left side of Northern STV, where there are 2 islands and the coast close. You can fly around between the coast and the 2 islands and get super close pools.
Rod: Nothing! As druid isn’t my main, no artifact pole, not blue nor epic pole, a simple +5 basic pole.
Items: Water walking elixir and giant bobbler.
Time: took me around 12 minutes to complete and I was the first back to Booty Bay. Don’t forget your heartstone!
Schedule: I looked around a lot for that information so the schedule is 2:00PM PST (5:00PM EST for me).
Skill: I had 155 classic fishing
It will be crowded, yes, it may take you a few attempts since it’s pure rng, keep at it and you’ll get it!
Good luck!

I've been taking a like to fishing recently. So, today I tried Booty bay fishing contest and actually won! To my surprise just after 2 seconds I turning the quests, people pouring in to the Booty bay like a swarm to turn in their quests as well.
To note, I had a significant disadvantage as I was hostile to all Steamwheedle Cartel factions, I couldn't just simply hearth to Booty bay. Here's what I did.
1. I prepared Oversized Bobber, Draenic Water Walking Elixir and Sharpened Fish Hook for little extra chance.
2. I am paladin so the Crusader Aura must be on. And turned off the WM.
3. Set my hearthstone at Hardwrench Hideaway, Southern Stranglethorn Vale.(Only resort to this if you're hostile to the Booty Bay)
3. I have used my best fishing pole
精致的卡鲁亚克鱼竿
along with the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
饱经风霜的渔帽
for that extra fishing skills.
4. Bound my Fishing to the key which I am comfortable with. Set loot to the auto-loot.
5. Parked my char in Northern Stranglethorn Vale until the fishing contest starts at 2PM realm time(little text box will pop up and let you know there's a catch).
6. Flew in circle as I finish the schools. Don't fly too far off searching another school, as they quite frequently spawn due to the significant traffic in the zone.
7. Hearthestoned to Hardwrench Hideaway and flew directly to Booty Bay to turn in.
You don't have to be highmountain tauren druid and be on low pop realm to win this but these would give you an edge.

Troll monk here. Just did it on my first try (although it was close) needing 17 minutes. The first person needed 12 minutes. It was over after 17 minutes.
I started at 2pm near Grim'gol and gradually went to north facing more and more competition. I was not really quick, even misclicking some casts The most important aspect which might let me get that achievement was that island at 20,40 in Northern Stranglethorn. There was literally nobody fishing and I guess I got there about half of my 40 fish. So check that island out, there are a lot of spots and most people seem not to fly over there.
Apart from that, I had a fishing skill of 1 (just started fishing in Classic) and used nothing except the SL fishing rod.
Good luck, you don't have to be Druid or a Highmountain Tauren to win.

I just won first place on my server! (yay!) Unfortunately, when doing the
STV Fishing Contest
for
Master Angler of Azeroth
I came across some problems and I'm hoping I can prevent others from making similar mistakes. Here's a few little pro-tips to ensure you get your shiny new
Dread Pirate Ring
and that ever so coveted
Salty
title!
First off, make sure you get the
right time
.
I showed up about 2 hours early lol,
but at least I wasn't late!
I saw some mixed answers in other Wowhead comment threads and in Google searches and such. I assumed the contest would start at 2pm
server time
and found out shortly after getting there that I was wrong, it in fact
starts at
2pm PST
.
Secondly, bring some form of
water walking
.
Some of the pools you need to fish from can be difficult to reach, especially if you're a shorter race like gnome, goblin, or vulpera. I personally just bought some
Elixir of Water Walking
and
Draenic Water Walking Elixir
off the AH. There was only a few of each up on my server so I bought a couple of both. You won't need more than 3-4 at the absolute max, but I ended up only using 2.
Third, buff up that
fishing skill
as much as you can.
The chance of catching
Speckled Tastyfish
is increased based on your total fishing skill, including increases from lures and such. I personally have been fishing a lot in my Garrison lately so I went in with my
Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
that I got from there and
"The Broker's Angle'r"
which you can just buy from any
Shadowlands Fishing Trainer
. Those two items add a flat 20 fishing skill on top of whatever you already have, plus the hat has an on use effect that will put a lure on your fishing pole for 10mins which adds another 7 fishing skill (which could be higher, but
higher lures
will cost you more gold.)
Fourth, set your
hearth
to Booty Bay.
This is sincerely the fastest way to get back to the quest giver once you've got your 40 fish. It's not super important on lower pop servers but it does save some precious time. To those on higher pop servers, this may be the one thing that sets you ahead of your competition.
Last but certainly not least,
TURN ON WARMODE
.
I play on a relatively quiet server and even showing up 2hrs early to the contest I ran into about a dozen other people preparing for the event. I was terrified of the competition so before I went back at the right time I turned on WM, thinking that anyone else competitively fishing while being prone to ganking is crazy lol. Thankfully I ended up being perfectly fine, I didn't see a single other player for the entire 14 minutes that I was fishing. There wasn't even anyone around the quest giver when I got there and didn't see anyone before I left.
I hope this is helpful, and if you have any more questions about either the
STV Fishing Contest
or any other achievements related to
Master Angler of Azeroth
just reply to this comment and I'll do my best to answer. If this was helpful to you, I would really appreciate it if you left a like so others can also find this information later.
Thank you so much, and happy fishing!

Did it today as a Tauren shaman with at least 2 mins to spare. I stayed around the area of grom'gol, mostly right south of the town, around the bay where the whirlpool of death is, and slightly around the shore to the north. There are always enough fish schools there, sometimes very close to each other.
水上行走
was useful, especially for the bay area (around 43.0 58.0). After a while there were at least 2 other players in the same area competing with me, but I've seen more people on Lake Nazferiti and other more popular fishing spots. Also forgot to turn WM on
I used this setup: the buffed fishing rod
精致的卡鲁亚克鱼竿
(but there are better available), with
古代鱼线
,
锐利的鱼钩
for the temp buff and finally
拉姆瑟船长的特酿啤酒
, which is cheap. and available on the AH All these can give a you slight edge on these
斑点可口鱼
procs
Don't forget to set your
炉石
at Booty Bay!
the first winner was a highmountain with at least 5-6 mins difference, as
艰苦朴素
is really OP for, but not necessary for a winning place. The is event usually over after 14-17 mins, as each week a different number of people participate, so keep trying if you don't get it from your first or second attempt!

This is basically a waste of time to attempt unless you're playing a highmountain tauren... so incredibly disappointing. With pretty much every fishing buff you can get I still only had 24 by the time the first turn in happened. Event ended right as I hit 40. Making this region wide was a completely asinine decision, good lord.

My first week trying it. About 6 showed up to collect it. First within 12 minutes and game over within 15.
I flew south and was doing fine, then a hunter came and killed me. Then after a long GY run he came back again and used his pet to keep me interrupted. Completely horrid hunter, rest of us were just giving each other a chance. But that's the risk of Warmode I guess :)
The event does spawn at 1400 Server Time. This was true today on a Horde EU server.
