The last boss of Trial of the Champions (The 5 man instance).
He consists of three main phases, and will fly down and engage the tank after you speak to the elf npc.
Phase One - In normal form, summons one ghoul that should be killed or snared or shackled. If he is not killed he will explode at the end of the phase. Easy phase, otherwise tank & spank. The ghoul will also "charge" party members, and can be a real pain for casters if not dealt with. Has a few diseases, but nothing too major.
Phase Two - The Black Knight will rise as an undead and will summon an army of the ghouls. There are two strategies to deal with this.
1) Everyone groups on the tank so the ghouls can be tanked. You aoe the ghouls down as quickly as possible before they can explode
2) Kite the ghouls around and focus fire on the boss. The Black Knight will regulary blow ghouls up, but if your kiting is up to par this will not be a problem.
Avoid standing in the AOE he creates.
Phase Three - The Black Knight rises again as a ghost with increased dps and magic damage debuffs. He aoes the group and the fight becomes a dps race to kill the boss before the healer runs out of mana. Healers will need to AOE heal or be skilled to survive this phase. Be aware of people gaining the "Marked for Death" debuff, as they will take some serious damage and be knocked back. It is recommended to save bloodlust or other applicable buffs for this phase.
After this The Black Knight is FINALLY dead and he will be lootable for two epic-quality items and an
Emblem of Triumph
. He will also drop a
Champion's Seal
in Heroic Mode.

For me as Resto Druid this is easy fight. If all party members stands very close to each other, on normal dificulty, only Wild Growth is able to heal everyone during phase 3. On Heroic I place Rejuvenation on each party member and then just cast Wild Growth on CD and its ok.
I think only exploding army of death during phase 2 is dangerous.

as a pally tank using Consecration right before the sencond round begins usually pulls all the undead spawns to you, if that fails use your AoE undead spell and that brings them running to you,
Also is important to draw all the agro from the first four guys, it's easy for a party member who dies to come back before the round is over but it's better if that never has to happen, especially in heroic.
fun little instance though, great way for gearing duelspec and picking up currency pieces

If you want to avoid getting hit by the ghoul explosions just kite the boss around. Because of the cast time on the ghoul explosions you will never be able to be hit by it if you just keep moving.

For the Achievement (I've had worse), we had a pally off-tank and two great burst DPS (Warlock in full T8.5 and Mage in T8) along with a shaman healer. The main tank (DK, well-geared) moved the Black knight around while the pally off-tank AoE taunted the ghouls. The mage and I burned down all of the adds (there were 8 I think) before any could blow up. I've noticed that the one he tries to explode is the lowest health mob, and the explosion cast is about 5 seconds. So, its quite possible to just single-target burn the adds to like 10%, have 1 DPS move on to the next one while the other one kills, rinse and repeat x8.
If you are having issues, stack together during the pull, have the mage use Frost Nova, everyone runs out, warlock AoE stun, the AoE as the tank kites. Either way works. Explosion Radius is about ~15 yards, so no melee.
Also, the ghoul in phase 1 (Risen someone or other) counts towards the achieve, so just burn him too. Im-->CF--->CB--->IN was more than enough to kill him (7k overkill). Also, be mindful of the Black Knight's Desecration (the gray stuff on the ground. It ticks for about 2k on a tank and slows movement speed by 50%+.
I've also done this achievement using a Demo-specced warlock (myself) who poped Meta, charged right as the ghouls were spawning, used IM aura, poped the AoE stun, AoE Taunt, and then demo-circled out while 3 ranged DPS AoE'd like all hell (Ranged were Warlock, Mage, Ele Shaman).

Use Glyph of Holy Light. Makes life a lot easier. It shouldn't be too bad as long as your DPS doesn't suck. He's got about 250k HP in heroic, and that AoE thing hurts quite a bit at ~8 stacks (takes about 30 seconds to get there), so as long as your DPS can push 3.5k+, you should be alright. If one DPS dies, oh well. Make sure your DPS stacks up on the tank. There is no benefit from their standing 1000000000 yards away (the spell has like a 50k yd range, its a mass-cast, not exponentially-decreasing AoE. If they are stacked and you can spam HL, your life should be golden, especially with beacon on the tank. You'll only have to focus on healing the raid (see below for why).
If you have a DK tank, they can chain pop Unbreakable Armor-->IBF--->AMS and require little-to-no healing for the fight. Unbreakable will absorb 2k damage from all attacks, which is effective for the first ~3 stacks (due to magic resistance, mitigation, etc.). IBF reduces damage by 30% from all sources, which should make stacks ~3-7 manageable (they'll hit for ~4k per, on a 40k tank buffed, which is nothing), and AMS for stacks ~8-9 (this actually reuqires skill on the DK tank's part to time it right, but if done properly will work for both stacks). If executed correctly, will cause those later killer stacks to hit for a meager 2k.
The upshot is that you shouldn't have a problem healing this as a paladin as long as you (1) have GoHL (2) your group knows how to stack up, (3) your tank isn't a moron, and (4) your DPS can break 3.5k (you can do it with 2.8k, but 3.5k helps quite a bit if you don't have a shaman/priest/druid healer).

If you die at any point during this fight, release immediately and fly back, takes about 10-25 seconds to get back in the fight, depending on your rig and number of mods.
Also, don't loot the corpse until you verify everyone is alive and in the instance.

As a priest healer, it helped to use hymn of hope as soon as he despawned at the end of phase 1, then shadowfiend in phase 3.
The AoE damage during phase 3 is a little crazy, so it's a good place to use divine hymn. Shield yourself before starting though, to reduce pushback.

We actually 4-manned this on Heroic today with no major issues.
Group makeup was DK, S. Priest, Druid tank and Paladin healer (myself). It was a nice surprise we could actually do this, seeing as none of the DPS were above 1.9k, and both the DK and Priest were fresh 80s, mostly decked in the ilvl200 gear from regular. Still, it was pretty easy.
As others have said, massive AoE on the adds in P2 helps tremendously. Even if a few do explode, it's nothing unhealable. P3 is basically time for popping cooldowns and burning through your mana if you're a healer. In my particular case, I was sure to melee in P2 with SoW up to top off my mana as much as possible (P2 becomes dull after the adds are all down, since no major damage is being dealt, so it's the perfect time to melee), and even after preemptively spamming HL all through P3 (and without Plea) I still finished with ~30% mana left.

Here's the strategy that often use when tanking the black knight.
Phase 1:
Simple spank and tank with a ghoul add, The ghoul will explode when the black knight either dies or if the ghoul reaches 10% health.
Phase 2:
Burn down the black knight as the tank holds aggro on all of the mobs. When the black knight uses Ghoul explode, move the black knight and ghouls out of range. Keep burning the boss and move between the two points when the ghouls are marked to explode. Once the boss is dead, run away from the remaining ghouls as they all start to explode.
Phase 3:
The boss returns as a ghoul and it's a test of survivability. The black knight will give a 10 second debuff that increases magic damage taken by 200%. This and Death's bite stack together, allowing the group to die if the boss is not burned down fast enough.

For phase 3 (as for any boss that does elemental AoE damage), a
Lesser Flask of Resistance
on each party member helps a lot more against
Death's Bite
than one might think (they're really not expensive these days).
Heck they will even help against the spells cast in the first boss fight (such as
Poison Bottle
).
And if you have two paladins, one of them should already have the
Shadow Resistance Aura
up during phases 1 and 2, and in phase 3 as the black knight starts hitting rather lightly, it's perfectly viable to switch out
Devotion Aura
for
Frost Resistance Aura
to mitigate his
Death's Bite
s. Note that there is also the priest's
Shadow Protection
and the shaman's
Frost Resistance Totem
.
The amount of resists the whole group gets will help the healer tremendously. You might lose 5% or so of your DPS from not using your favorite flask or totem, but overall you will be able to do more damage when your healer can more or less keep you alive for 20% longer.

Small, but essential thing. You'll really want someone who can cleanse disease in your group, or the tank is gonna take a lot excess damage in phases 1 and 2. As a group with a DK tank, Hunter, Mage, and two Druids, this fight really sucked, and we couldn't finish it. ON the other hand, the hunter was only doing ~1k DPS and we couldn't do it even when BOTH druids healed, so maybe they just sucked.
Still, though. Main point: Diseases hurt, especially when he uses Obliterate. 6k every couple seconds, 10k or so Obliterate.

With the
Death's Respite
knockback in phase 1, I've seen undergeared groups nearly wipe or lose someone early because the healer got knocked away. One important factor with that spell is it's a knockBACK not a knockAWAY so a healer can do phase 1 with their back to the fight and if they get targeted they just get thrown through the tank/boss to land on the other side still in range.
(Same also applies for ranged dps if you wish to get back in range asap, it's a 2 second cast and you can see if you're being targeted for it so you know when to turn your back).

i wouldnt recommend using classes simply for resistance. Although our group wiped many times on the 1st and 2nd bosses, we did this final fight so simply, with an average of 2.5k dps in the group. all dps were casters, (do not know if this will help in the fight) and we had a resto druid spamming me(the tank) as i just stayed in the same place, holding the boss's aggro. something that really helped tho was having the resto druid healer in the second and third phases. In the 2nd phase, i activated army of dead, then simply let the boss's ghouls atack our group after they died (but still avoiding explosions). resto druid can put one HoT on a player then move on to another, making them really good for this encounter.

As a mage, you have time to
Ice Block
before the
Marked For Death
debuff is applied. Pop it as soon as you see the green mark appear over your head, then remove it as soon as the debuff fails. If done correctly, it should only interrupt casting for 3-4 seconds and will make it a lot easier on healers.

The Black Knight has an ability called
Death's Respite
in the Trial of the Champion 5 man dungeon during phase one of his fight.
One nifty trick I've found is if you have quick reactions, you can use an
item
or
ability
that removes all effects that cause you to lose control of your character to remove Death's Respite before it actually does anything to you, thus relieving pressure on your healer and saving you from taking some damage.
This ability only does damage
AFTER
the 2 seconds it is cast, so you have 2 seconds in which to remove the effect.
Also, this ability seems to have the opposite effect of a Death Knight's
Death Grip
throwing you away instead of pulling you towards him.

Just felt I need to add some info if you get in a low dps group. We got 1 dps over 2000 and the other around 1000. We wiped first phase a couple of times. After that our druid/cat dps suggested that he should heal instead and at the same time throw in some dps. After that we used 1 dps just over 2000 and 1 dps around 1200 something and 2 healers. We sailed through the whole instance. This makes me think that the healing is essential here and the dps is not. I´ve played in groups where we had an average dps over 2500 and had to quit because to many wipes. Why? The healer just could not stand it although we killed everything fast. Just an idea that worked for us.

I found that as a paladin tank, dropping a divine protection with divine sacrifice on phase 3 really helps minimize group damage and lets the healer mostly just focus on you. Since doing this I found this phase has become much easier. The damage you take with divine protection up is pretty minimal and really helps the group stay alive to dps him down. This is on regular ToC. Not sure how it would work on heroic.

And I apologize for using the whole "yousuckatpvp" line.
But your argument just doesn't hold ground here. Aside from the fact that any boss will be easy if your party's gear is good enough (the Black Knight is no exception), most of the abilities used by warrior bosses or mage bosses or whatever show something about the class they represent. Just like the Black Knight. But just like them, the Black Knight uses abilities that players don't actually have. And just like them, the Black Knight does NOT use abilities that are nevertheless defining attributes of DKs, namely
Death Grip
and
Anti-Magic Shell
(and those you see in PvP). He doesn't even try to refresh
IT

right away when cleansed.
Ultimately, the best way of seeing that DKs aren't all that overpowered is to roll one yourself. They start out OP because they are decked out in blues (with WotLK itemlevel budgets too). You'll rip most of the other players apart in BGs at lev 59.
But then, in the 60-69 bracket, and even more so in the 70-79, and when you finally hit 80, you'll see that you won't be ruling battlegrounds just by summoning an army of ghouls and spamming desecration-IT-PS-<
your
spec
attack
here>. Until you get high-end Arena gear, that is. And then you can make fights look like a fight against the Black Knight again. But that's only illustrative of a subset of DK PvP. And guess what, by the same process, any other class will be made to look overpowered.
So I get the joke, already. I'm just saying, as a PvPer, that it could use a tad bit of rewording.
Edit: Once DKs can leave their starting area and PvP, the quest rewards will have decked them out in RotLK budget blues, including the weapon.
DKs may have overpowered abilities, but they are not the only class that do, they can't get all of those abilities at the same time, and they are on CDs.
I win 50% of the time in 2v2 against a like-rated team that has a DK in it.
You can argue and downrate me all you want, it won't change the TRUTH.

This fight looks like it would very much favor a lot of the unholy death knight abilities, now if only Anti Magic Zone did not require 3 points in a talent that you only want when you are a tank. The shield would definitely help for ghoul explosions.

every day i run this instance, and i have some hints to give. in general, it is really useful to have some shadow resist (entire party) and frost resist (tank only). an aura or totem is sufficient.
phase 1: if you have a ret paladin or priest (any spec) in the group, have them use
repentance
,
shackle undead
or (in dire need)
turn evil
on the pet. any other CC that also works on undead (but i can't think of any other). also, shamans should forget about
mana spring totem
and drop
cleansing totem
. i have found that this fight does not last long enough for mana spring totem to really be useful, while cleansing is almost trivializing this phase. if you can control the pet and minimize the disease damage (
abolish diseases
from a priest, maybe?), you have won this phase.
if you don't have a ret or priest in your group, your best bet is to let the tank taunt the pet as much as possible.
phase 2: this is where things start to get nasty. let everyone collapse to the center for the first few seconds. apart from that, there are a few things each tank can do to keep aggro on him at the start:
PALADIN: lay a
consecration
right at his feet, then when most of the pets are above, cast a holy wrath. the 2 second stun means your consecration will tick a bit further. also, if you have not done so already, make a macro that casts RD on a friendly mouseover target and HoR for a hostile mouseover target. use this macro EXCLUSIVELY for the healer (sorry, DPS). if you really want to, you can get the holy wrath glyph, but it is not needed.
DEATH KNIGHT: unholy has it a bit easier here due to
wandering plague
. what you want to do is first a
death and decay
right on top of the boss. then
apply
diseases
to the boss. once diseases are applied, you can use
pestilence
to spread around the good word. after that, again only use your taunts for the healer.
WARRIOR: you need to wait a bit for most of the ghouls to appear, use that time to build some threat on the boss (save for thunder clap and shockwave). then
thunder clap
right in the middle. step a bit back, to the side, then
shockwave
. cast
challenging shout
. after that, spam
demoralizing shout
, using thunder clap and shockwave every cooldown. again, keep your taunts for the healer.
DRUID: you have the most problems with this boss. build some threat on the boss like the warrior does while all the ghouls are spawning. then cast
challenging roar
. then spam
swipe
and
demoralizing roar.
again, keep your taunts for the healer, as all the tanks do on this phase.
in any case, you have 2 choices for tanking this boss: you can either ignore all the ghouls and burst down the boss, staying grouped up in the center.. the boss has 250K HP (rounded), which means with 3 DPS at 3K each and a tank at 2K (11K DPS), you need around 23 seconds to burst down the boss. don't use cooldowns, save them all for the last phase. the other way requires you to pull the boss a bit away from the center of the room at the end of phase 1. then you kite him around the room. the advantage to this tactic is that, unlike the other one, you can see when a ghoul is about to explode and can stay clear from it. the disadvantage is that it is harder to do full DPS, and the ghouls will go more across the map. discuss which tactic you are using while waiting for the roleplaying to finish.
phase 3: why won't this a-hole die? anyway, all collapse to the boss. healers should spam their AOE heals. you need to pop all personal and groupwide DPS cooldowns. this includes trinkets, bloodlust (if you have a shaman) and racial/class spells. you should aim to burn down the boss in 10 stacks or less. if you reach 15 stacks, the healer will start to have trouble. if you reach 20 stacks, then you take double damage and people WILL die. use all the shadow resistance you can get. paladin tanks with the
divine sacrifice
talent should pop this at the 5th stack, along with divine protection. other paladins with the talent should pop divine shield along with it.
death knights can pop their army either in this phase or phase 2, but preferably in this phase. the ghouls will lighten the melee damage on the tank, allowing the healer to concentrate on raid healing.
this fight is the second hardest part of the instance, and if paletress is not there the hardest (apart from unlucky champion composition on the first fight.

The minion in the first phase (ghoul) appears to randomly deaggro the tank and go for another party member. In my latest run it just kept bashing on the Warlock. I taunted it off and built some threat on it, but a little bit later it ran for the Warlock again.
It looks to me like a standard Charge-whoever-is-out-of-melee-range attack, which many trash enemies have. The classic solution is to simply stack on the tank, which here also helps with Phase two, too.

Btw, with the Ghoul explosion spell, if u dont think ur gonna kill themm all in time every1 one except tank get away from the Black Knight, most people would think this is Obvious thing to do, u would be suprised how many people dont think it'll be a problem. but trust me it is they will knock ur dps hp's 2 around 30% and the Black knight AoE will kill em in seconds and you'll get a wipe.
Also with the First phase of this guy, best thing 2 do first is to get a dps 2 kill that ghoul he summons from the dead Belf, it really helps the healer.

Druid healers, phase 3 is the perfect time to use your
Tranquility
bomb. I had no issues with pulling aggro even without
Improved Tranquility
(obviously your mileage may vary).
With only ~1700 spell power (iLevel 200 and five pieces of iLevel 219 gear, all purples except for my back and idol) I was having difficulty keep the group alive, and we wiped four or five times before I remembered I had this spell. When I used it, we had 10 seconds of full health on everyone in the group except for the tank (who went down to about 75% health). After I finished channeling I just threw
Rejuvenation
on the tank,
Wild Growth
on every cooldown, and spammed
Nourish
on the tank until The Black Knight died. The fight ended about 15-18 seconds after phase 3 started, with everyone above 90% health.

As a Priest Healer, I would recommend asking the group to move within melee range of the boss, and you should do so too, for the third phase. Then, spam holy nova and if things get hairy, divine hymn/PoH should do the trick.

The Risen Herald is also vulnerable to a Hunters frost trap. Just be aware that if the ghoul is frozen when stage one ends, it will not explode. In order to prevent the ghoul from existing into stage 2, break the trap when The Black Knight is almost dead.

As a Hunter, he's no fun to kite from full to death...I just managed that when our tank got gibbed by a multi-explosion (the Mage had Nova'd the zombies to get away), the secondary tank (DPS Warrior) got mushed shortly thereafter, and the Mage was squashed; this left me and the Resto Druid.
Frantic kiting is better than no kiting, I guess...

Having a Death Knight in your party will make the second phase much easier.
When a Death Knight releases Army of the Dead, the ghouls will taunt and do damage to the ghouls the Black Knight have summoned, so you can focus on the boss.

Not only do priests (especially holy priests) excel at heavy group healing (Prayer of Mending, Prayer of Healing, Divine Hymn, Circle of Healing, plus all associated talents), but they also have Prayer of Shadow Protection, which greatly reduces the damage in phase 3 (damage is shadow + frost).
Throw in a paladin with Frost Aura (or, as a second choice, a shaman using a Frost Totem), and this actually becomes quite easy to heal.
This is not quite right.
Dual damages (frostfire bolt, this frostshadow damage) always use the lowest resistance, so you need both or it will have
no
effect at all.

This guy is pretty hard, me and my guild have been farming ToC ever since i hit 80, our moderately geared paly can tank it on regular but its tough . On heroic its even hard for my uber geared dk friend . Btw Death's bite hurts like a !@#$% for casters.

In WotLK classic (day one of getting to black knight)
It is glitched if you do solo. Easiest is to do the black knight in a group and everyone gets credit for the kill. To not glitch him, have one person dismount and kill him. Have the person that started interraction stay mounted.
Was told you can also dismount after summoning him and just fight him normally and bypass glitch as well.
