About the Author
This guide was written by Llarold! I’ve been tanking since Vanilla. During Mists of Pandaria, I saw an opportunity to begin writing guides, and I took it with the hopes of making myself a better tank and making the community into better tanks with me. I hope it’s working!
I am active in all of the tank class Discords but primarily contribute to theorycrafting discussions in
Peak of Serenity
and
Skyhold
(Monk and Warrior). I’m active on
Twitter
, where I mostly talk WoW (and basketball), and I’m half of the team responsible for the YouTube channel
WoW at Night
, which focuses primarily on tank guides and previews.
Rotation Changes for Brewmaster Monk in Patch 9.2
How Do Tier Set Bonuses Affect Brewmaster Monk's Rotation?
They don't (mostly)!
If you have the 4-piece bonus (
天界醉酿
) and are using the Conduit
滚烫烧酒
(you should, it's great!), then you will want to have Breath of Fire active as much as possible before using Keg Smash. Using Keg Smash at least every 10 seconds to maintain uptime on
天界醉酿
is more important than getting the extra damage bonus from
滚烫烧酒
, so be sure to never hold Keg Smash too long!
That's about it!
Brewmaster Monk Tier Set Guide
How Does Double Legendary Affect Brewmaster Monk's Rotation?
For the most part, it doesn't.
As Kyrian using
唤神令
, you won't want to cast
玄牛下凡
at the same time as
精序兵戈
because the two Niuzaos will compete with each other for your Purified Stagger.
Cast
精序兵戈
first, then
玄牛下凡
12 seconds later.
As Necrolord using
万古酒
, hard-casting
骨尘酒
over a proc will reset the duration to 10 seconds. This means you effectively waste any remaining time on the proc. Procs from
万古酒
do not trigger
凯文的小软泥怪
. Basically, this means that sitting on a cast is a DPS loss, but it can potentially be a defensive gain. If you're worried about defense, wait until the
骨尘酒
proc has expired to hard-cast
骨尘酒
. If you're not struggling defensively, just let
骨尘酒
fly the instant it comes off of cooldown.
As Night Fae, nothing really changes.
妖魂踏
will reset way more often, making the rotation feel better, but you still have the same ability priority!
As Venthyr using
罪邪古训
, you will want to maximize the number of hits you land during
陨落僧众
. This mostly just means maintaining
碧玉疾风
, using
神鹤引项踢
in place of
猛虎掌
, and continuing your rotation as usual.

猛虎掌

Never let both charges of
活血酒
sit on cooldown while you are actively tanking. It is one of your core defensive skills, and you should always be maximizing its value. Don't let
轮回之触
and
玄牛下凡
sit on cooldown, either. They are your big offensive cooldowns!
As for timing
天神酒
skillfully, holding it to mitigate a large enemy hit is generally the way to go (e.g., raid bosses, Tyrannical Mythic+ bosses). Sometimes the best move is just to use it as often as you can. If you're taking a beating and there aren't any predictable spikes of damage (e.g., Fortified Mythic+ trash), using
天神酒
on cooldown can be the right call. Use it as the situation dictates.
Try to maintain
碧玉疾风
as much as possible. It's a great filler spell that has no cost (other than a GCD), and adds a constant, steady stream of AoE damage.
If you are using
灼焰炙气
, then you can replace
猛虎掌
with
神鹤引项踢
in the single-target rotation while the
灼焰炙气
buff is active. It is a modest DPS increase, but comes at a modest defensive sacrifice, so be forewarned: This is not the standard playstyle for challenging content.
Cleave/AoE
The only things that change with target count are the priority of
幻灭踢
(which becomes slightly weaker than
火焰之息
), and swapping
猛虎掌
for
神鹤引项踢
.

Keys to Being A High Damage Tank
Keep
醉酿投
and
幻灭踢
on cooldown. This is critical!
活血酒
as much damage as possible while
玄牛下凡
is active. This is entirely dependent on how much damage you are taking, and it is a huge part of maximizing your damage in raids and Mythic+ dungeons.
猛虎掌
is a terrible offensive (and defensive) skill, so using it as little as possible is a good thing.
Maintain
碧玉疾风
! You can still use it while dealing with mechanics that force you away from a boss, so letting it fall off is nearly always a mistake.
移花接木
is a better offensive keybind in single target than
猛虎掌
if you have 5 Healing Spheres and the heal won't just be overhealing.
神鹤引项踢
is better than
猛虎掌
in 3+ target AoE -- for damage only.
轮回之触
and
玄牛下凡
are your offensive cooldowns, so try to make as much use of them as possible.
Brew Management, or Drinking Your Way to Safety
With the removal of
铁骨酒
in Shadowlands, there really isn't that much to manage in the way of Brews anymore.
Try to keep at least one charge of
活血酒
on cooldown at all times, and use
天神酒
liberally to shield yourself during critical moments (when your health drops low, or you're about to be slammed by a big boss hit).
That's it. They really made the class a lot easier for newcomers. No complaints.
Baseline Brewmaster Monk Abilities
Offensive Skills
醉酿投
is the core offensive skill for Brewmaster Monks. It's your main source of damage and generates your defensive resources. It's your one and only.
幻灭踢
is the #2 offensive skill for Brewmaster Monks. It deals decent single-target damage and generates defensive value in the form of Mastery stacks. Simple, but effective.
火焰之息
is the secondary AoE damage skill. It doesn't deal very good damage, and the 5% damage reduction debuff is also pretty small. It isn't great, but it isn't bad. Better than nothing!
猛虎掌
is the basic single-target filler. It's not really a great skill, but it does add a tiny bit of damage and defensive value. Its primary role is to prevent you from capping on Energy.
神鹤引项踢
is the basic AoE filler. It's also not great, but it is a decent little AoE damage skill. It suspends your autoattack while kicking, so it's not generally worth using against fewer than 3 targets.
Defensive Skills
活血酒
is your primary damage reduction skill. It's powered by Keg Smash and Tiger Palm, it's fairly effective at removing damage, and it empowers your next Celestial Brew.
天神酒
is a great big shield on a relatively short cooldown. It's very strong and can be a great counter to many boss mechanics, although you generally do not want to let it sit on cooldown for very long.
醉拳
passively smooths your damage intake. It doesn't actually grant direct damage reduction, although Purifying Brew does to a somewhat-diminished degree, but it does make your health pool much smoother, and easier for healers to keep above 0.
酒醒入定
increases the value of your base Stagger. Despite being applied by rotational skills, it's effectively passive. If you play the spec even half-decently, it will be up 100% of the time.
精通:醉拳大师
is the Brewmaster Mastery. It's another source of consistent, passive damage reduction. There are a fair number of boss mechanics in Mythic+ dungeons that can be dodged, and this can allow you to guarantee dodges on those abilities. Otherwise, it's just a pretty good defensive passive.
Healing Skills
移花接木
is the most reliable self-heal available to Monks. It's not particularly powerful, but it is better than nothing.
玄牛之赐
grants reactive self-healing as a reward for taking damage. Pooling a few orbs can be very helpful as a reactive heal you can quickly walk through when you take burst damage.
活血术
is the cast-time, targetable heal available to Monks. It's not really usable during combat, but it can be useful for topping up between pulls or during intermission phases, or if you have to kite during a particularly tough Mythic+ pull.
天神护佑
is a passive increase to healing intake that scales with your Critical Strike chance. Nothing more to say about it, really! It's good!
Mobility Skills
滚地翻
is the most basic mobility skill in the game, and it's very, very good.
魂体双分
lets you set a spirit, then transfer to it with
魂体双分:转移
. It's a short-range teleport effect with some setup required. It's strong, it just requires some planning and a lot of situational awareness.
对冲
is back from Mists of Pandaria! It's the same buggy, broken skill it always was, so don't expect it to work right most of the time! It is supposed to function like an equal mixture of Charge and Death Grip, but it generally leaves you out of melee range of your target even when it works correctly. Additionally, it has a tendency to not work at all, but still go on cooldown. If your target is immune to grips, it will sometimes only charge you halfway to them, while they remain stationary. Other times, it won't move you or the target, but will still go on cooldown. If your target can be gripped, but you cannot path to your target (such as if you're on a ledge), it will sometimes grip them halfway to you, while you remain stationary. Neat, right? Ultimately, it can still be useful as a grip, but more often, it's useful as an AoE root when you need to kite in Mythic dungeons.
迅如猛虎
is a talent, and a very good one. It grants an extra movement speed keybind on a short cooldown, and it even clears roots and slows. It's terrific.
Offensive Cooldowns
轮回之触
is a simple, hard-hitting offensive cooldown. Use it to deal extra damage to low-health bosses, or to quickly kill off adds.
玄牛下凡
Is another simple offensive cooldown. You summon him, he comes out and deals AoE damage and siphons off part of your Stagger damage. Thanks, buddy.
Defensive Cooldowns
壮胆酒
is the ultimate Brewmaster defensive cooldown. It increases your health, decreases your damage taken, and increases your Stagger conversion rate. It will stop you from dying. It has a long cooldown, but it is reduced by
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
, just like
天神酒
and
活血酒
.
禅悟冥想
is an extremely situational cooldown. It greatly reduces your damage taken, but is broken immediately upon being auto-attacked and requires you to remain stationary. It is useful for reducing damage from a telegraphed boss ability with a large delay or cast time, but it is otherwise a dangerous DPS and defensive loss, since channeling
禅悟冥想
means you cannot generate Brew charges or deal damage in any way. It was an extremely powerful cooldown against Argus’ scythe attacks, which brings up the hardest component of using
禅悟冥想
: timing it after auto-attacks and before the enemy cast goes off. If the cast timer is relatively long, it’s not too bad, but as was the case on Argus, his scythe cast was very quick.
禅悟冥想
rewards quick reactions with a short, extremely powerful survival cooldown.
躯不坏
is a talented defensive cooldown. It scales up in effectiveness based upon how much damage is dealt by each ability that hits you. It’s a very solid defensive cooldown, and very easy to use, but it does require sacrificing two more readily available talents. If you need a potent defensive cooldown on a moderate cooldown,
躯不坏
’s the go-to.
Utility Skills
玄秘掌
is the most effective piece of Brewmaster utility. All Monk specs have it, but Brewmasters have the easiest time applying it to all enemies within range. It’s a simple but effective 5% damage increase for all physical damage-dealers. It’s awesome!
玄牛雕像
is a niche value talent. It generates significant threat on all enemies within its radius. While it doesn’t generate enough threat to hold mobs off of a tank, it will pick up constantly-spawning adds and keep them off of your DPS and healers, giving you or another tank a few seconds of breathing room to pick them up. It can also be used to AoE taunt by casting
嚎镇八方
onto it.
嚎镇八方
is Brewmaster’s unique tank utility. Targets affected by
嚎镇八方
move 50% faster. This can be tremendous for quickly repositioning bosses, particularly those with important positioning requirements. It’s strong.
切喉手
is the Monk interrupt. There are many like it, but this one is yours.
清创生血
allows Monks to remove Poisons and Diseases from friendly targets. The applications are rare but highly useful on occasion in Mythic dungeons.
轮回转世
is the Monk single-target resurrection spell. It’s not fancy, but Monks are a tank with a rez. Like
清创生血
, that can prove invaluable on occasion in Mythic dungeons.
禅宗朝圣
allows Monks to teleport to the Temple of Five Dawns on The Wandering Isle. It has a minimal combat value (although it can be used during combat), but gives all Monks the ability to return quickly to Legion-era Dalaran on an extremely short cooldown.
碎玉闪电
is a ranged tool that Monks can use to tag targets from long range. It’s virtually never worth using for damage or threat.
Brewmaster Monk Covenant Abilities
精序兵戈
is the Kyrian Monk ability. It's a big offensive/defensive cooldown that provides a lot of all-around value. It's very good, and very versatile.
骨尘酒
is the Necrolord Monk ability. It's a modest offensive/defensive cooldown, that like the Kyrian ability, provides a lot of all-around value. It's also very good and very versatile, but it is a shorter effect on a shorter cooldown. This makes it available much more often, which is good for Mythic+, but its reduced duration makes it weaker as a major burst cooldown in raids.
妖魂踏
is the Night Fae Monk ability. It provides a steady AoE DPS and healing increase, and occasional boosts to effective health. It's an interesting concept, but it's relatively undertuned given the major opportunity cost of having to constantly monitor your position and try to fight on the Faeline to get ability resets.
陨落僧众
is the Venthyr Monk ability. It's the simplest of the four options, a fire-and-forget DPS cooldown. Not much more to it, really. It deals a lot of burst damage.
Mastery
精通:醉拳大师
is the Brewmaster Mastery - the Brewmastery, if you will. When you are hit by a melee attack or deal damage with
幻灭踢
, you gain a stack of
精通:醉拳大师
, which increases your dodge percentage equal to your Mastery percentage. When you dodge an attack, all stacks of
精通:醉拳大师
are consumed.
The design creates soft breakpoints at which you gain a slight theoretical defensive advantage. For example, if you have a base dodge chance of 10% and 29% Mastery, then with 3 stacks of
精通:醉拳大师
, you will have a dodge chance of 97%. This means you still have a 3% chance to be hit. With everything else the same, at 30% Mastery you would have a 100% chance to dodge, meaning you cannot be hit by more than 3 attacks in a row before guaranteeing a dodge. This sounds great on paper!
In practice, breakpoints are not that important.
精通:醉拳大师
stacks being completely consumed upon dodging a single attack undermines the value of breakpoints. Going above the number of stacks you require to guarantee a dodge puts a “hard cap” on
精通:醉拳大师
’s value. If you get unlucky with dodges and cast
幻灭踢
at the “wrong” time, you can easily push yourself over the hard cap. Because dodges are beyond your control, planning your ability usage around
精通:醉拳大师
stacks is a fool’s errand and will result in you taking substantially more damage in the long run.
Because Mastery stacks are consumed when you dodge
and only when you dodge
, you can intentionally turn your back to an enemy to guarantee you are incapable of dodging while continuing to generate Mastery stacks.
Why would anyone ever intentionally increase their damage taken? To guarantee a dodge against a hard-hitting dodgeable boss ability.
This is rarely useful
. Nevertheless, for the handful of hard-hitting boss abilities that can be dodged, this is a useful, weird tool that Brewmasters have in their kit.
Advanced Brewmaster Monk Mechanics
天神护佑
is the glue that ties Brewmasters together, and gives them a special value to Crit other tanks lack. Brewmasters have a chance equal to their Crit chance to be healed for 65% extra whenever they take healing. Whenever. Whether it’s a self-heal, a Druid HoT, or a cast-time Shaman heal, if it heals, it can be affected by
天神护佑
.
天神护佑
is the reason Monks aren’t held back by their lack of self-healing.
Brewmaster’s Brews appear to have fairly long cooldowns. One of the more confusing aspects of picking up the class is how
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
reduce the cooldowns of Brews, turning these ostensibly long-cooldown abilities into short-cooldown abilities. It’s something that becomes comfortable quickly, and when in doubt: Does the ability have “Brew” in its name? If so,
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
will reduce its cooldown.
玄牛之赐
has unclear language about how it spawns orbs. While it says taking damage has “a chance to summon a Healing Sphere,” in fact,
玄牛之赐
orb spawns are not random at all. For every 100% of their health, a Brewmaster takes before
醉拳
is calculated, they spawn a
玄牛之赐
orb. If you were at full health with 75% Stagger and were hit for 200% of your health, you would lose 50% of your health immediately, Stagger the other 150%, and spawn two
玄牛之赐
orbs. This damage is calculated cumulatively, so if 9 straight hits deal 10% of your health (pre-Stagger), a 10th 10% hit is guaranteed to spawn a
玄牛之赐
orb.
Energy, Brews, and Brewmaster Monk Resources
Brewmaster’s Energy is a somewhat-ignorable resource. While you can spam
猛虎掌
and burn it all up, that's generally not a good idea. Your more important skills are governed by cooldowns, and energy isn't a serious factor in the way you play.
Think about Brewmaster like a bowl of cereal: The rotation is the cereal, Brew Charges are the milk, and Energy is the bowl. The bowl’s important, you couldn’t have a bowl of cereal without it, but the stuff most people care about is the cereal. Some people might prefer the milk, but if you find someone whose favorite part of cereal is the bowl, that’s an alien (poorly) impersonating a human. Run. Away.
The only significant rule of Energy management is this: save enough for
醉酿投
. If
醉酿投
is about to come off of cooldown and you’re below 55 Energy, don’t use
猛虎掌
.
Brew Charges are the primary Brewmaster resource, and the ability to manage them skillfully is what differentiates the experts from the novices.
Rule 1: Never let
天神酒
and
活血酒
sit on cooldown for long while tanking.
Rule 2: Use
活血酒
at the right times to throttle damage intake.
Rule 3: Generate as many Brews as you can.
Unlike some other tanks, Brewmaster’s resource management and skill priority are based entirely on how much damage you’re taking and doesn’t change at all with how many enemies you’re facing.
Heavy Stagger can be dangerous regardless of whether you’re facing a single boss or a trash pack of ten mobs. You will want to remove as much Staggered damage as you can with
活血酒
in any circumstance.
The number of enemies you’re facing can increase your damage taken, which would result in higher
活血酒
usage rates when tanking in AoE, but one dangerous enemy can be just as deadly (often moreso!) than a pack of adds.

By far my favourite guide on here for one reason. The strange paragraph that makes me laugh out loud every time.

The bowl’s important, you couldn’t have a bowl of cereal without it, but the stuff most people care about is the cereal. I recently started a monk and plan on tanking in BFA. So I started reading up on it through your guide.
It really is a nice guide you've put together with lots of information and made it quite informal which makes the adoption of information so smooth!
Thanks for this, highly appreciated! /bow
