In Battle for Azeroth, Monks have received many different class changes, ranging from Talent changes to Gameplay and Rotational changes. These changes affect all specs, affecting Brewmaster Monks, Mistweaver Monks, and Windwalker Monks all alike, so what you knew about healing, DPSing, and tanking in Legion is likely to be changed.
While there are many new abilities and spells, there are also returning ones, previously removed during pruning. On top of those spells, the legacy from Legion lives on with different
legendary effects and artifact traits
returning in BfA as talents, baked into the core spec, or are now
azerite traits
, the BfA version of artifact traits. Gameplay changes are also happening, as some abilities and spells that could be used together with others are now
added to the GCD
.
Some Legion systems got reworked, like Honor talents, now active while questing with
War Mode
turned on, which also grants bonuses, like 15% extra experience while leveling.
In this overview, we'll highlight all class abilities, as well as new, changed, or removed talents. Grey to green text indicate changes between
Legion
and the current version of
Battle for Azeroth
; more information can be found by going to the Changelog within the relevant spell page. Keep in mind that information is largely derived from the tooltips, so typographical errors may be intentional to match.
Some notable overall changes:
Arcane Torrent and Every Man for Himself changed

Two of the strongest racial effects have received changes in BfA, with
奥术洪流
receiving a new effect and added to the GCD and
生存意志
having its cooldown increased.
The majority of class cooldowns have been added to the GCD
.
Abilities that are in the Global Cooldown, or GCD, cannot be used at the same time, meaning you must wait for the default GCD, 1.5s reduced by haste, or 1s for energy users, until you can use your next ability.
Before BfA, many abilities were called "off-GCD" as you could two or more of them at the same time, even in the same button macro. For BfA, Blizzard started to reduce to amount of abilities in this state.
All melee abilities now scale with both Attack Power and Weapon Damage
.
The actual ability damage formula for all non-casters has changed, and now all those abilities use both weapon damage and attack power, even abilities like

This appears to be intended to create a better balance between classes, rather than some favoring weapons heavily (
战士
), while others hardly at all (
武僧
).
Battle for Azeroth has a huge stat and ilvl squish.
Battle for Azeroth implements the second stat squish for World of Warcraft, two expansions after the
Warlords of Draenor Squish
.
Unlike Warlords, Battle for Azeroth will also have an item level squish, changing the item level previously found on classic items as well.

I agree with this - it should be clear what the default

percentage is. This should be added to the Character Pane.
No promises yet, but the character sheet is a possible solution we might try here. Because Stagger now uses a more complex calculation akin to armor, it's difficult to present it in a tooltip. For the moment, the salient points are:
1) You want Agility to drive the value of
醉拳
, similarly to how all tanks now want Strength/Agility to make sure their armor/AM keeps up with content they're tanking.
2) In current alpha, with par gear against the content you're fighting,
醉拳
amounts are similar to what they'd been before the change (40% baseline, 70% when you have
铁骨酒
up, etc.).

Various things to expect next build:
New talent: Guard (replacing Elusive Dance on L100). "Guard against future attacks, causing the next X damage you Stagger to instead be prevented." 30s cooldown.
(The Guard Honor Talent will be renamed).

Part of the value of

is being moved baseline, by lengthening its cooldown to 2 minutes, and speeding up the baseline recharge time of Brews. This should help the row be more competitive, without losing total Brew charges.

's duration will come up to 7, also freeing up more Brew charges.

. This usage wound up mostly being a trap, and 4 modes still a good amount of choice for the talent.

healing increased about 30%. We expect the overall spawn rate to be lower than Legion, and this helps make up for that.
Balancing is still preliminary, but a few tweaks on that front:
HP reduced for Brewmaster by around 10%. Brewmaster's heavy resistance to killing spikes means they're not a tank that needs as high an HP pool. This does have the side effect of making

orbs spawn slightly more often.

's effectiveness against Magic brought back up to 35%.

A little background for interest:
We try to be really careful about adding charges to baseline spells, since it's a higher-complexity mechanic than simply having a cooldown. Essentially every spell is slightly more efficient with charges, since you don't get the little bit of slippage when the cooldown comes up each time, and you can better sync it with other effects. So it's always an attractive ask, because adding charges to anything improves spec performance.
is a better case due to bad feeling of every second lost slightly reducing

efficiency for 20s, and this also helps the weirdness of wanting to start ramping it up 20s before any pull.
was added in Legion to try to give something that enforced a little more spell variance (pushing Vivify to top priority sometimes and not other times). By now, there are so many more spell interactions contributing to the "weaving" part of

A significant amount of change coming to windwalkers and not so much to brewmasters. The cooldown buffs to brews wont completely offset the decrease to magic stagger. The increased threat gain through spinning crane will be good, would be interesting to see it have an interaction with fire breath or keg smash, similar with WW's damage increase and MW's fistweaving.
I want to know why Invoke Niuzao is still a 3min cd as opposed to the Windwalkers Xuen's proposed 2min cd - surely given their relatively equal strength and roles due each specs roles their cooldowns should also be commensurate?
Will there be any steps taken to increase the tracking on the barrels released via Keg Delivery talent?
Cant help but notice a lack of interest in introducing any new mechanics or transferring any artefact traits into the trees similarly with WW/MW? for example the effect of Fundamental Observation legendary (50% cd on Zen Meditate) could replace the relatively defunct Elusive dance - especially given the greater reduction in magic damage staggered, or potentially Stormstouts Last Gasp/Anvil-Hardened wristwraps (if the emphasis is around improving or adding mechanical importance to brew usages alongside blackout combo and high tolerance). Hell, even the Brew-stache artefact trait might be initially more appealing and find stronger usage than Elusive dance does currently (or will, potentially).
All in all though its a good start and good progress, hopefully the spec can be revisited once DH/HNT/LCK are settled.
